Album Description

Swiss tenor Hugues Cuenod had one of the most extraordinary careers in music, spanning more than 60 years. He made his debut at the Met as the Emperor in 'Turandot' at age 85, and his last public appearance was at a tribute in 2002 to honor his 100th birthday. A student of the legendary Nadia Boulanger in Paris in the 1920s, he participated in the first-ever recordings of the Monteverdi madrigals and later became one of the most esteemed interpreters of the French art song. These classic recordings are truly irreplaceable. Notes are in English and French.

5 out of 5 stars Master of la mélodie.......2006-11-25

This is an outstanding double-CD of some thirty songs from the length of Fauré's life and eight from the Duparc collection. I find Cuénod a perfect interpreter for this repertoire. His sound is so clear and focused and his diction so precise that any listener with some knowledge of French will find it relatively easy to understand the text. He also has a remarkable intensity and a flexibility in his style that give the music freedom and vitality. I've usually preferred this repertoire in Gérard Souzay's or Bernard Kruysen's baritone range, but this set could make me change my mind.

Cuénod recorded these songs in his late sixties, which is just phenomenal. He strains for his highest notes and his sound there is tighter, but his other qualities more than make up for those places. What a long and fruitful career this man has had, and in such a variety of styles and periods! I can also recommend his other recordings on Nimbus, especially his definitive interpretation of Satie's Socrate.

Both Martin Isepp and Geoffrey Parsons are sensitive partners who contribute a great deal to the performance. One of my favorite moments is Isepp's lively and rhythmic solo at the beginning of L'hiver a cessé.

This is a superb collection with a reasonable price tag. Bravo! Bis!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hours and hours of fun!.......2007-01-24

Renard alone makes this set worthwhile. No other recorded performance (including Stravinsky's own) brings out the humor and basic "enjoyability" of this piece.

5 out of 5 stars Prodigious performances!.......2006-10-17

Ernest Ansermet' s refined style was always supported by an admirable incisiveness around all what he conducted. And his Stravinsky still stands as one of the most perfect, idiomatic and extraordinary readings ever made; hovered with that deep vision and knower of the Stravinsky' s aesthetic; Ansermet always to blend power, febrile imagination and musculature, among his best achievements I should remark his Fairy' s kiss, The game of cards, Petrouchka, and the thundering Le Sacre are played with the right balance between abstraction and finesse; expression and sumptuous lyricism.

So you should not hesitate just for a second at the moment to decide to go for this special compilation.

Absolutely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Ansermet & Stravinsky - A Perfect Pair.......2003-05-19

This 8 CD collection of Stravinsky's Ballets, Stage Works and Orchestral Works is nothing short of magical. Conducted in its entirety by Ernest Ansermet leading the orchestra he founded, L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, this box set, while not complete, features all the great Stravinsky compositions -- "Firebird," "Rite of Spring," "Petrouchka," "Pulcinella," and all the Symphonies among others. Unlike most of history's great composers, Stravinsky himself was able to conduct and record his own music in stereo, so why not just get those discs? Well you should, but the Ansermet recordings generally offer superior sound and clarity. In fact, Ansermet was Stravinsky's personal choice to conduct the world premieres of many of his recordings, and Ansermet was selected by the composer to introduce the three famous ballets to U.S. audiences. A mathematician prior to his life as a conductor, Ansermet had his critics as he was virtually self-taught, though he did study music as a youth. But that mathematics background served him well in the studio as his early stereo recordings of everything from Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev to Falla and Chausson are engineered to perfection, and often sound better than the recordings by so-called more famous conductors. But don't take my word for it, buy some Ansermet for yourself and see. If you are not prepared to get this Stravinsky Box right away, then ease in with the new Ernest Ansermet "Great Conductors of the Century" compilation (see my review). You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Recording in Coliln Davis's Berlioz cycle.......2004-10-30

Truly a bravado performance totally underseving of the very negative review the recording has unjustly recieved. French opera is not always accessible on first hearing. French opera is often very subtle and doesn't grab the listener immediately. I think Berlioz and Wagner have one unforutnate characteristic in common, you either get their music or you don't.
This score sparkles from beginning to end especially under the baton of Colin Davis. Nicholai Gedda remains one of the finest interpreters of French music and here, as in the "Damnation of Faust", excels with beautiful tone and delivery. His French is impeccable. Edda-Pierre is not to my personal taste but she is excellent. Bastin, Berbie, Soyer and Massard sing their roles with vocal aplomb and dramatic involvement. A wonderful set! If you like French opera, and Berlioz in particular this belongs in your collection. A valuable addition to the catalogue. Buy if before it disappears.

5 out of 5 stars Colin Davis is masterly in mercurial Berlioz opera........2004-01-30

During his studies in Italy Berlioz became aquinted with the biography of the famous Florentine sculptor, goldsmith and rogue, Benvenuto Cellini, in whose life he found parallels with his own. He was one of the first of the Renaissance `hero artists' ,where great talent seemed to justify everything, including breaking the law. Berlioz was also a very reckless character, one of many, in fact, in the Romantic era, he was followed by Lord Byron,Wagner (Die Meistersinger) and much later Richard Strauss (Ein Heldenleben). In fact, Die Meistersinger bears some resemblance to the Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini: being a grand scale comic work, the hero artist's struggle against his dectractors, his fight against mediocrity in winning his beloved. Unfortunately Berlioz's opera never gained the popularity Die Meistersinger did, due to perhaps its virtuoso score, high demands on singers, double and triple choruses of extreme difficulty and extravagant stage settings plus requiring a master conductor who can hold all this together.
We are fortunate however of having found the right man for this job: Sir Colin Davis, who devoted a large portion of his career to studying and rediscovering Berlioz, that marvel and "enfant terrible" of Romanticism. This is definitely the best of the two available recordings of this tremendous work. It comes from 1958, but digitally remastered and is as fresh as new. Sir Colin Davis is the most attractive drawing card here, he conducts with masterful control and concentration, whipping the orchestra thru the long and virtouso score with never a dull moment. One must listen to the finale of the first act, the incredibly complex Roman Carnival with all soloists, several choruses and orchestra going in all directions, cross rhythms and the like -an extremely difficult conducting achievement. Also, the last scene, when the statue is cast, the excitement mounts and mounts to such degree that one is glued to the edge of his seat.
The singers are also very good: Nicolai Gedda (whom you might have guessed is one of my favorite singers) has a strong and also sensitive voice and excellent French pronounciation in the title role. In the soprano role Christiane Edda-Pierre stands up well against Gedda, her voice is somewhat light and lyrical.
(It should be mentioned that this being a dramatic opera, like Wagner, there are no coloraturas and other unnecessary vocal fireworks.)
I like the mezzo soprano Jane Barbie in the role of Ascanio whose aria is probably the loveliest piece in the score and she does it very well. In the remainder roles, Roger Soyer as Pope Clement is impressive and the two comic characters (Balducci and Fieramosca- the detractors- a la Beckmesser/Hanslick in Die Meistersinger)-are also very creditable.
To sum up: If you haven't heard this opera before, you are in for a delightful surprise. It is full of melody, excitement and fun throughout. Just now, the Met revived it for this season under Levine very successfully. I just wish it would be turned into a DVD, as there is a lot to see and hear.
    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Opera.......2003-12-17

I was very happy to see that the Benvenuto Cellini recording by Colin Davis was available at Amazon. It has not been a readily available recording and I bought mine (I had the LPs first) from a dealer in England. This is my favorite opera. It is always a joy to listen to and is a work that is difficult to categorize. At times, Cellini is an opera buffa with some very funny scenes, such as the balcony scene where Teresa is showered by flowers and her father, barging out to confront the serenading mob, is struck with flour. Then, the opera moves to more serious moments. The duel between Cellini and Pompeo is one of these. At first, there is the amusement of Cellini's plan to abduct Teresa being foiled by the bumbling Fieramosca but the duel and killing of Pompeo turns humor to a serious consequence. The music in this part of the opera gives voice to Cellini's regret at having let his temper take control, resulting in an unfortunate incident. In the end, Cellini is vindicated; gets Teresa and his enemies come over to his side. It is a joyous ended that always makes me smile.

This recording conducted by Colin Davis was a break through recording and revealed a work that was incomparable for its lyric beauty, wit and charm. It also restored the opera to its original form. Berlioz had allowed cuts to be made when his friend Liszt staged the opera in Weimar. The cast is a marvel. Christiane Eda-Pierre is superb as Teresa beautifully singing her coloratura arias with wonderful poise. Nicolai Gedda is in a beautiful, full voice as Cellini as he serenades Teresa and bold as he does battle with Pompeo; Jules Bastin makes a comic Balducci; Robert Massard makes a wonderfully incompetent villain in Fieramosca, who tries but can never thwart Cellini. Jane Berbie makes a great Ascanio and sings Mais qu'ai-je donc? In the minor role of the cabaretier, Hugues Cuenod creates a wonderful comic character. The supporting cast does a wonderful job and the chorus of the Royal Opera is first rate. The recording includes dialogue and where there may be a drawback in some operas the dialogue is necessary to the opera and often amusing.

This is an opera worth discovering at any price. Some of the music will be familiar from the Roman Carnival overture that occurs in the first act. This is a work that has unjustly been neglected and is being performed at the Met this season but was cancelled at Lyric Opera. Here's hoping Lyric will stage it soon.

5 out of 5 stars Truly bravado performance by all involved, especially Gedda.......2003-11-01

I have little to add to the very excellent and educated review of wierdears. This is an outstanding performance of a, regretfully, overlooked masterpiece. Davis' conducting is masterful and Gedda's singing of this torturous Tenor role is absolutely exquisite. The one correction I have to wierdears' astute review is that the recording was made in the early 70's (at least that's when it was originally released), not the 60's (close to the time Davis made his wonderful recording of Le Troyens). The reason, I feel, you don't see this opera performed often is because you need a Nicolai Gedda to perform the title role. Cellini's aria "Sur Les Monts Les Plus Sauvages" is very demanding, requiring the Tenor to effortlessly soar up to a full throated high D flat, which Gedda does as no other Tenor before or after him could accomplish with such ease. I wholeheartedly agree with the learned reviewers assessment of Eda-Pierre, Bastin, and Massard. This is a must have recording. Get this recording for the music, get this recording for the masterful conducting, but above all purchase this recording to witness the artistry of a Tenor who is unsurpassed and whose presence is sorely missed today.

    5 out of 5 stars A RARE PERFORMANCE EXHUMED!.......2007-05-14

This extraordinary performance of Alban Berg's masterpiece "Wozzeck"
belongs on everyone's wish list. Nothing prepared me for the power of
Tito Gobbi's performance in the title role - and Suzanne Danco brings
her usual intelligence and musicianship (qualities that are practically
non-existent among singers in the 21st century) to the role of Marie.
Having loved the music of Alban Berg for 35 years now, I can truly say
this live performance is to be treasured!

5 out of 5 stars A warm, humorous Figaro--one of the very best.......2006-03-11

This is an early stereo (1955) recording from the Glyndebourne Festival, justly famous for being warm and effervescent, with a Figaro who is laughing and toelrant rather than the current mode of making him combative and resentful. Gui's pacing is fairly leissurely by period-style standards, and the voices often sound too mature for their roles, but it would be hard to name another performance that shows so many sides of Mozart's style, its elegance and wit, pathos and human understanding. Since every cast member is outstanding, it's worthwhile to give the whole list:

Graziella Sciutti sop Susanna ; Sena Jurinac sop Countess Almaviva ; Monica Sinclair sop Marcellina ; Jeannette Sinclair sop Barbarina ; Risë Stevens mez Cherubino ; Hugues Cuénod ten Don Basilio ; Daniel McCoshan ten Don Curzio ; Franco Calabrese bar Count Almaviva ; Sesto Bruscantini bass Figaro ; Ian Wallace bass Bartolo ; Gwyn Griffiths bass Antonio.

EMI has given us an incredible bargain by fitting 158 min. of music on to a budget two-fer, eliminating only two superfluous arias for Basilio and Marcellina in the last act. A small price to pay for a wonderful hisotrical document that should never go out of the catalog. No libretto, by the way.

1 out of 5 stars Off Key and Off Tune.......2005-08-03

I'm not certain just what some reviewers are listening to. As I listen to this CD, I found myself gritting my teeth and wishing that someone would tune the orchestra, and I've heard cat fights that sounded better than the soloists. The fact that this was a 1950's recording is irrelevant. This is simply an amateurish attempt at a very serious project.

I would suggest the Rilling recordings instead. These are still somewhat flawed, but quite excellent none the less.

5 out of 5 stars Bach performed with feeling........2004-10-05

This is an excellent recording of 2 famous Back cantatas and 3 lesser known ones. I would recommend it, especially to those who normally balk at the idea of listening to an old recording (this being recorded in 1950).

The Vienna State Choir under Jonathan Sternberg give especially moving performances; something lacking in this day in age. The chorus sound is not as clean as you might find today, but the skill and interpretation is better than you will ever find.

Special praise, in the solo department, goes to the exceptionally expressive Hughes Cuenod (check out his lung capacity in cantata 104 and his unparalleled expressive abilities in the famous "tossing ship" aria in cantata 21). As an additional note, no tenor has ever made recitatives come alive more than Cuenod (imho).

Soprano Rossl Schwaiger (I'm sorry if I didn't spell that right) also gives a sterling and youthful sound to her movements in cantata 21; and the bass Alois Pernerstorfer produces some very good interpretation as well as a great bass-baritone voice in all of his performances throughout.

Pick this 2-cd set up as fast as you can. You will not regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Performed Bach.......2004-01-08

What a pleasure to hear Bach Cantatas performed with such simplicity and beauty and no-nonsense authenticity. The chorus sings with much love and as if they really understood the text. Rare !
The orchestra plays with a pure sound and sensitive regard for dynamics and the vocal soloists are quite exceptional. Of particular note is the tenor Hugues Cuenod whose rendition of the various arias is without doubt unique in it's sense of Baroque style.
And finally the conducting of Jonathan Sternberg whose conception of Bach and organization of the whole into beautiful interpretations is worthy of great praise. A must for Bach lovers.
