People will argue that Le Sacre du Printemps is Stravinsky's greatest ballet, but Firebird (1910) is just about everybody's favorite. Three concert versions exist of this delightful ballet. This is the 1945 version that uses 10 scenes and comes in at 30 minutes. The Firebird has everything Stravinsky learned from Rimsky-Korsakov about Russian Orientalism, but it sounds nothing like what anybody in Europe had heard at the time. Neeme Järvi coaxes just the right nuances from the London Symphony Orchestra, and they manage to do justice to the Lyadov works and the brief Rimsky-Korsakov piece. This is an all-around excellent disc. --Paul Cook
