Even better in Italian!.......2005-11-23

Set Svanholm is a wonderful surprise on this disc, which captures him "live" in the Italian repertoire at the MET along with a beautifully extended Siegfried Brunnhilde scene with Eileen Farrell, who is in big, beautiful, but rather unsubtle voice. Svanholm shows himself to be a superior Verdian with wonderfully precise accents and moving phrasing. His voice is quite unlike many of the Wagnerian tenors; while it does become a little wooden at times, it never loses that Italianate placement, which tenors such as Suthaus have none to speak of. Yet, it is not a squeezed sound like the wonderful James King. Svanholm does not have the glorious ringing tones of a Treptow, but can Treptow match the range of Svanholm? No! And that he has neither the imposing tonal color nor heft of Melchior, his voice is defintely more beautiful. And, was there ever a more delicate and waiflike man, who must have made a marvelous Siegfried. How could a rich baritonal and chesty voice come from such a body?

Actually, you will find Svanholm to be quite unmatached. His voice is every bit as thrilling as Franco Corelli, who after the 1960's sounds very similar to Svanholm (...just listen to his first line of Amneris/Radames duet with Thebom, it would be easy to mistake him for Corelli).

Finally, his breath support is astounding, a column of air supporting a huge sound, yet Svanholm does not have a real piano technique, but a kind of supported falsetto.

This is a wonderful document of tenor, who had he been more vain, could have ruled the world of opera. (But we all know that Virgos are too modest to take full control)....
