Great for the road.......2007-05-11
I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!
Beethoven 25 Favorites.......2006-11-21
Very good! I ordered it especially for Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathetique
25 Beethoven Favorites.......2006-11-05
Good overview of his works----an introduction into his depth as a composer

[...] Honestly, it isn't THAT THAT great, but its good enough for its price. I'd say that your $ pays off, for a while. I've noticed how after a long time, it gets aggrivating at times. No harm meant, "Beethoven lover". I just mean don't plunge into this cd with all the hopes in the world. Besides, it's just my opinion, so you may like it more than me. All i can say is; a) listen to some samples before you buy, b)know this is not REALLY the great Beethoven himself, and c) enjoy YOUR music, whatever it may be.
Great Price...Not so good itself.......2005-05-19
This a great priced cd, but the content is why it is so cheap. It's a true-amateur album. Beethoven Lover is over her/his head. This is the real world, not a fantasy-everyone-likes-every-type-of-music world. Deal with it and agree with me. It isn't so great.

Customer Reviews:
Singing with presence.......2007-06-18
The piano part is not without bad moments, the recording is quite bright, but yet there is not a unpleasant hard edge in singers voice one might imagine. Instead there is a lot of presence and maturity of great artist that made me stop and listen wonderful interpretation of familiar songs. If artists like Seefried and Jurinac are your favorites, I bet you'll appreciate Grümmer as well - try Abendempfindung to start. Quality/price ratio is exceptional.
Disappointed by first listening.......2003-08-04
After reading the rapturous reviews of this 2 CD album, I purchased it last week. There is a lot of music for the price, and the recording quality it good considering the age of the recordings. But I found myself less than enthusiastic about Elisabeth Grümmer's singing. I was particularly interested in the Schubert lieder. What I value most in lieder singing is naturalness and a certain pleasingness to the ear - lieder is after all song, not opera. Grümmer's voice seems to me more suited to the latter. I can think of a dozen or two contemporary lieder singers who I would much prefer over Grummer. Of the rest of the music on the album, I can't venture to say anything as I have only begun to explore this CD. But for Schubert lieder, stick with Fischer-Dieskau, Brigitte Fassbaender, Ian Bostridge, Sarah Walker,Richard Jackson, Janet Baker, Felicity Lott, Barbara Bonney,Elly Ameling, Stephen Varcoe (a remarkable voice - his version of Am Bach im Fruhling and Auf der Donau, cannot be beaten), Matthias Gorne, Cheryl Studer (her versions of I'm Fruhling, Der FluB, and Am See are wonderful) and innumerable others - in no particular order. While I'm at it, I have also listened to Bryn Turfel's recent recording of Schubert lieder. It has been highly reviewed in many quarters, but none of his performances would be my first choice.
An Answer To a Prayer........2001-01-05
It's amazing what treasures one can discover when browsing around Amazon.com! Discovering this 2 CD set, and quickly receiving it in the post soon after seemed like the answer to a prayer.
Here's more than two hours of lieder recital items compiled from broadcasts dating from 1948 to 1970. No allowances need be made for changes of acoustic or recording quality. One can listen entranced and undisturbed until, after the last track, applause breaks out after the last of Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs".
If there is a welcome disturbance, it is the appearance of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and a chorus, joining the singer in a Schubert setting of a song from Goethe's "Faust". In his autobiography, Fischer-Dieskau provides a wondrous appreciation of Elisabeth Grümmer, allocating more space to it than to comments about all his other colleagues put together.
I shall not attempt anything similar, adding only that a reminder of the extremely low price should be enough to urge all lovers of German lieder to add this to the trolley.
Beauty Pure!.......1999-09-04
Grümmer's voice was probably the sweetest voice ever recorded.
She bares her soul in each and every recording and makes you gasp at the sheer beauty and urgency of what she sings; She simply bares her soul. This 2-CD together with her recording of Humperdinck's "Hänsel & Gretel" recently re-issued under EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century" MUST move you to tears!
I am really at a loss for words here - just get it, sit back and listen to the greatest voice of the century!!!!
One of the great singers of the 20th century.......1999-04-20
This is a fantastic recording at an unbelieveable price. Two live recordings of concerts given by this great spinto soprano who was never truly appreciated by the music-buying public. The voice retained its freshness until she retired, and this collection of lieder makes one weep at the sheer beauty of her voice. A great bargain!!!

Great performances at a budget price.......2003-08-12
For less than the price of full-priced 1 CD, you get 2 full CDs with fabulous performances by Leonie Rysanek, one of the greatest sopranos of the 2nd half of the 20th century. Leonie Rysanek's shimmering 'floating' soprano voice has no rivals. Birgit Nilsson's top notes were powerful but of another timbre. Birgit Nilsson's top notes are hard - like metal, like a laser beam. Leonie Rysanek has a 'soft' upper register. But soft does not equal no power. If you hear Birgit and Leonie together in Elektra, you will realize that Leonie can match Birgit in terms of vocal volume, note for note. The only difference is that Leonie has a flexible voice, the sound is different. So we have on record here one of the greatest voice this century - no less legendary than Birgit Nilsson, Joan Sutherland, Leontyne Price or Renee Fleming. But admittedly Leonie was more low-profile because she didn't do many commerial recordings so a lot of people who are not opera lovers are not aware of her.
So enjoy this wonderful CD!!

Rysanek Reigns.......2000-12-30
Leonie Rysanek was a singer of great gifts and literally of many parts. Her career extended over 46 years and took her into almost every corner of the repertoire. This Gala recording samples 28 of the 46 years and includes selections from eleven different operas, and everything she does seems to work for her. The gleaming top of her voice made her a natural for Puccini's Turandot, but she was equally at home in the garb of Strauss's Marschallin. The three selections from Verdi's Macbeth are, to my ear, more exciting than her excellent studio recording in spite of the German translation, and the first act Otello duet has about it a gentleness often absent in performances of this music. I heard her twice in person and can vouch from experience that these live-performance recordings capture quite well the glow of her voice and the drama of her performances. She shares repertoire here with Callas and she is as deep into the understanding of these roles as was "La Divina." The difference is that Rysanek managed it all with wonderfully secure high notes. Her duet partners are not always up to her high standard, but George London in the Aida duet makes a brave sound, and I was impressed with Bernd Aldenhoff as Otello. It's Rysanek, however, who is the star attraction, a true queen of the operatic stage. The quality of the recordings is surprisingly good for live sources from up to fifty years ago. I highly recommend this issue.

A Premiere Wagnerian Voice .......2006-06-28
Astrid Varnay was the equal of Nilssen and Moedl... and in this record it is clear why Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner kept inviting her back to star at Bayreuth Festival for 17 consecutive years! Not only did she have glorious voice (big, full bodied with clear top and colorful bottom), she was a consumate actress, too. Her reading of the roles are always multi-layered and utterly convincing. A dramatic soprano version of what Vesselina Kasarova is today. If you combine Nilsson and Modl and divide in two you'd probably get something close to a Varnay.
For the record, Varnay and Nilssen were practically the same age (unlike what the other reviewer said). They were born not far from each other in Sweden and just a few weeks apart (Varnay was older)... and the two were great friends. The rather popular misperception that Varnay was much older than Nilsson is because Varnay started starring in the lead hochdramatisch roles like Brunnhilde, Isolde, and Elektra in her early 20's while her contemporaries were still doing understudy and supporting works. As a matter of fact, this extraordinary singer had her Met debut the day before Pearl Harbour bombing substituting for Lotte Lehmann as Sieglinde opposite The Lauritz Melchior in the broadcast Die Walkure without having ever sung on stage before and made a grand success of it and never looked back.
Theirs were the Golden Age of Wagnerian hochdramatiche. The likes of Traubel, Nilsson, Varnay, Modl, Borg, Rysanek... all greats in their own unique ways. I wouldn't say one is better than the other or any is 'unfulfilled' just because I prefer another. They were all special and individualistic.
Varnay was The Wulkure Brunhilde after Flagstad's reign, but her voice changed (some call it 'uglified'... it got edgy and wobbly on top) and in later years she took on Wagner/Strauss mezzo roles and then the character roles like Beckbig in 'Mahoggony' instead while Nilssen continued on as the premium dramatic soprano. I don't think anyone has bettered Varnay's portrayal of Ortrud or Klytamnestra (and Elektra... if you've heard the 1953 recording with Klaus) yet.
This box set is a good highlights of Varnay's many Wagnerian roles in her good soprano voice years and beautifully conducted by her husband Herr Hermann Weigert (including arias from La Forza del Destino, Un Ballo in Maschera (in Italian and German versions), an aria by Beethoven, and Wagner's songs and opera scenes from The Ring (no Hojotoho), Tristan und Isolde (with a searing 'Narrative and Curse' and 2 versions of Liebestod).
There are 3 CDs in tight fitting paper envelopes (no case). A neat little booklet with a note of her career (and photos with Windgassen) comes with it ... no libretto given.
PS: if you haven't read it yet, her autobiography (55 years in 5 acts) is a must read.
The voice is great, the interpretations a bit uninspired.......2005-10-08
All the other reviewers here seem to agree that Astrid Varnay was the equal of Birgit Nilsson. That may have been true for a period when she was in her prime--as on these excellent CDs from 1954 and 1955, in amazingly good early stereo--but I found her interpretations somewhat disappointing. Varnay's singing isn't all that characterful; she concentrates on producing a steady stream of sound. One doesn't hear many colorings, emotional or vocal, and she tends to adopt a steady volume as well.
The result, particularly in the Ring excrepts, is too uniform. One doesn't hear Burnnhilde's grief, confusion, or vulnerability, being aware at all moments of an excellent dramatic soprano producing notes. In the Tristan disc, which has better conducting, I sitll can't tell the difference between the bitter Isolde of Act I and the rapturous one in Act II.
The same holds true for Windgassen, who is fairly wooden in his characterization, both in the Ring and Tristan excerpts. The reviewer who points out that he gained in dramatic ability in later years, even as his voice became older and frayed, is right. One is aware here that Windgassen is mostly tyring to inflate his voice to heldentenor status, which he does convincingly, but when a voice is being pushed, there isn't much room for light and shade.
Superb Quality!.......2005-09-04
First of all, it must be recognized the absoultely stunning technology of Deutsche Grammophone. The recordings from 1954 sound thirty years ahead of its time. If you don't believe me, compare this to some RCA recordings from the early 1980's. Only Decca comes close with their recordings of Aida, Otello, and Trovatore around the same period. An ever so slight static evades the loudest moments, but nothing like the Mehta Trovatore from 1970 on, you guessed it, RCA.
On to Varnay, the truly divine quality of her voice is unmatched by Nilsson, Braun, Grob-Prandl, or Modl, yet surpassed by Flagstad. However, is it not this deluxe voice and attention to drama that make us forget how tightly strained her notes are in the passagio and higher. The vowels are closed and she squeezes into the notes by opening them via the consonants. This can be very annoying. One wishes she would "just sing the note" a la Crespin, who made an art out her sublime attack.
As the premier Brunnhilde between Flagstad and Nilsson, she should be more famous, but closed and/or thin voices almost never break into the recording industry since open sounds are favored timelessly by microphones and technology especially in the acuti. I find Varnay's style of Italian singing perfectly enjoyable to someone else. In German, she at home. Varnay could and should have surpassed Nilsson as THE remembered Wagnerian, but she did not. She was younger than Nilsson, yet she started much faster. When Varnay "arrived" on the scene, she was preferred for the Hochdramtisch roles over Nilsson many times. She had EVERY opportunity and recommendation. But by 1959, the tables turned in big way. Brava Nilsson!
Windgassen sounds very fresh, if not as dramatically astute as he would become in the 1960's.
These are great performances and no criticism will ever have to power to take that away. Varnay was a star, period!
Birgit Nilsson's equal.......2003-11-29
Astrid Varnay was Birgit Nilsson's equal. She didn't have Nilsson's phenomenal top notes but she had Nilsson's huge voice and she had greater warmth than Nilsson. Bravo DG for this reissue!!
One of the greatest treasures of the classical catalogue.......2003-11-05
The hugely underrated and hugely underrecorded great dramatic soprano Astrid Varnay in one of her very few commercial recordings. Here we hear Varnay at her peak as Brunnhilde and Isolde in superb recorded sound. It's so sad that her full Isolde, Brunnhilde, Elektra and Salome were not recorded commercially. Thankfully, we have radio recordings of her full Isolde, Brunnhilde, Salome and Elektra. In the excerpts on these recordings, she is better recorded than in all her other recordings. If you love opera and Birgit Nilsson, you must have this set.

5 star performances, 3 star sound.......2007-07-03
I recently bought Jochum's classic Bruckner Cycle (DG) with the same two orchestras (late 50s to late 60s, stereo) and I am pleased with the sound and the performances.
With all the great stereo Beethoven cycles in both analog and DDD available, I am very reluctant to invest my time and coin in recordings from the 1950s that are just a notch above historical recordings sound wise. Rhapsody has this Jochum Beethoven Cycle and the Jochum Concertgebouw Orchestra Beethoven Cycle posted. The Concertgebouw has much better sound. The mono recordings do sound better than another noted cycle, Karajan's early to mid 50s cycle that is a 5 star performance and only a 1 or 2 star sound.
The younger Jochum displays more energy and vibrancy than the older one. The classic example of this is Bruckner's 4th symphony. The earlier performance is a knock em dead lively recording and the other is just your average, run of the mill Bruckner 4th. That being said, I like the better sounding Concertgebouw over this cycle. The performances are pretty good overall and, IT SOUNDS BETTER. I wish this cycle was all in stereo! The 2nd is a very lively performance and sounds great. The 9th is also very lively, but it is in mono. It is like going swimming in the ocean and the temperature is colder than one would like. Eventually, we get used to the cold water, but we never stop thinking, "I wish the water was a little warmer." The 9th performance for me is not compelling enough to make me forget the coldness of the water. When I listen to the Concertgebouw cycle I never have these thoughts. I just enjoy some pretty good performances that sound great.
A Top Choice--thanks for releasing.......2005-12-22
There's only one drawback I can find here and it's that the set is a mix of stereo and mono recordings. Otherwise you've got a set of nine that on first listening strikes me as one of the most, if not the most, consistently pleasing that I've ever heard. Jochum's approach is not heaven-storming; it reflects more the side of Beethoven that seemed to revel in his ability to simply make amazing music. I've been more bowled over by certain performances of certain works but I don't recall being so totally enthralled with Beethoven the composer. By not pushing things too hard, Jochum avoids the inconsistency problem most conductors--even the best--have with Beethoven's symphonies. This set gets directly to the joy of music-making, the playing of the orchestras is miraculous and totally unselfconscious. I find myself drawn more and more to Jochum's interpretations, he makes almost anything sound life-affirming. Highly recommended and will, for a while at least, be my set of choice.
A great set.......2005-02-04
Jochum was a reliable, truly great conductor of the old school. This set is one of his finest achievements, together with his famous Bruckner cycle for DG. Same orchestras are used here: Berliner Philharmoniker and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (not Berlin RSO, as the review below says).
Most recordings of this set are in mono, but sound quality is very fine nonetheless.
Brilliant Beethoven Cycle Rescued From The Vaults.......2003-05-30
Now that Decca and Deutsche Grammophon, among others, are all part of Universal, we have seen some interesting things happen, and not all of them bad. What I'm referring to in this case is the new "Original Masters" Limited Edition Box Set series. Finally, the classical music world has taken a page out of the jazz reissue handbook -- put out a quality product featuring rare recordings but make its availability limited, and people will snatch it up. In the "Original Masters" series, first DG and now Decca have each reissued five box sets, of 4 to 7 CDs each, in distinguished, space-saving slim paper boxes, though the style of packaging is different. The DG sets feature 50s style graphics design on their covers, while the Decca ones have a distinctive rainbow/spectrum pattern on the spines and banners, and a black-and-white photo of the artist in question on the face of the box.
This particular set brings back Eugen Jochum's classic Beethoven Symphony Cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic and Berlin RSO from the 1950s and early 60s. (For your information, Symphonies 1, 5 & 9 are with the RSO, and 3, 6, 7 & 9 are in mono -- you do the math on the others.) In terms of content, I personally found all of these performances mesmerizing, and if anything only the 5th and 9th were not on par with other celebrated recordings. Well, I guess the consolidation of the music industry isn't so bad after all, as long as I can look forward to more reissues like this.

Ten CDs of Magical "Musik".......2005-12-23
This ten CD boxed set contains the first batch of releases in DG's "Musik...Sprache der Welt" series. Aside from a flimsy paperboard box/container and a booklet featuring an essay on DG's post-WWII recording activities, the packaging is identical to the single disc releases. I have reviewed eight of the ten individual titles included in this collection:
Bohm - Beethoven Syms 5 & 7
Bohm - Brahms Sym 2 / Reger
Furtwangler - Schumann / Haydn
Jochum - Bruckner Sym 9
Jochum - Mozart Syms 33, 36 & 39
Markevitch - Berlioz / Bizet
Markevitch - Schubert Syms 3 & 4
Sanderling - Beethoven Sym 2, Piano Cto 3
Instead of repeating those reviews, please consult the individual Amazon listings. No matter which way you purchase these value-priced classic mono and stereo performances, this is great music not to be missed.
