Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Prodigious performances!.......2005-07-08

Mark Ermler made a fascinating account of this set of symphonies. By reasons of musical architecture, the Second Symphony is the best known of his works. It keeps the captivating Caucasian spirit, the obvious Russian reminiscences built with a portentous musicality that has allowed it to be used as musical ballet frame and incidental music.
There are two previous famous versions: Silvio Varviso and Ernest Ansermet, but this one in particular has such force and conviction power that it makes a wonderful contribution for all those who appreciate these minor works if you want, but nice to listen them from time to time to rejoin with the Group of the Five.(Cesar Cui, Mussorgsky, Balakirev, Rimsky).
Specially recommended the Second and the Third.

5 out of 5 stars A Surprise From Moscow.......2002-02-27

This set was made on the heels of the intervention from Vladimir Putin. The Bolshoi had until this point been poorly managed and this talant had not been worked or exposed until recently. This set is really astonishing, the quality of playing and interpretation is incredible. Similar to Jarvi and Gergiev, this Mark Ermler set has its own sound and feel. Truly great performances to introduce you to these works or to add to other versions. The only complaint that can be made is the small use of space on the second CD. This contains only the 3rd Symphony and could have held similar orchestral music found on Jarvi's DG Recordings. That being said you are only paying for 1 CD. Now we only need to wait for New Russian opera recordings with TODAY'S Bolshoi Theatre.
