5 out of 5 stars A Vucchella is the best.......2003-09-07

The rendition of "A Vucchella" (trach 2) on this CD is as good as it gets. Yes, every aria on this CD will blow you away, but track 2 will melt your heart.

5 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Enjoyable, Tastefully Produced Delight.......2001-03-16

Even people who care nothing for opera will be won over by the graceful performances of popular Neapolitan songs on this disk. Many of the tunes, from the title O Sole Mio to Funiculi Funicula, are part of even non-Italian-descent American culture, and they are all sung with an easy grace and charm and gusto. It is easy to forget (!!) that Pavarotti is an international opera star when listening to this disk; he sounds so natural it's almost as if a good friend (who happens to have a magnificent voice) were entertaining you after a few glasses of chianti. By comparison, Mario Lanza's renditions of these songs sound artificial and mannered. The orchestrations are excellent, too. Pointed, lively, and well balanced with the soloist. This is an album recorded in Pavarotti's prime, in the 1970's, before he became one of "The Three Tenors."

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2001-01-09

Absolutely incredible. Pavarotti is breathtaking!! As he performs these Italian classic favorites he draws the listener in.. allowing them to feel the emotion that he feels with each note.

5 out of 5 stars Another dazzled listener.......2006-12-12

All the other reviewers love this disc because it is, quite simply, dazzling. Twenty five years ago the voice of Carlo Bergonzi on a record borrowed from the library (along with those of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) made me realize that opera was something worth listening to.... Things haven't changed. Bergonzi was among the handful of true greats and this recording does justice to his intelligent and passionate voice.

    5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Music.......2005-11-15

This CD is a favorite of mine for two reasons, Bergonzi is magnificent and the Italian songs are gorgeous. Moreover, these wonderfully crafted Italian songs are arranged in a straightforward manner--the tenor sings with a piano accompaniment--which allows the listener to focus directly on the beauty of the music. Bergonzi is simply extraordinary, he has such subtle vocal control combined with real warmth. The result is refined, but lush music.

    5 out of 5 stars Carlo Bergonzi - the tenor's tenor.......2005-07-28

This CD is for lovers of Italian "classical" Ballads, and is highly recommended. Most of the songs are sung by Carlo with a piano accompaniment, so don't expect to hear grand opera.

    A very lovely CD

    5 out of 5 stars Sheer Perfection!.......2002-09-25

This album is quite simply put, exquisite! Bergonzi shows in this collection that even late in his career he could still produce that wonderful lyric beauty he was so famous for. My favorite song on this abum Donaudy's "Vaghissima sembianza" is so perfect, so shimmering, just so very beautiful. This song is worth the price of the album itself. Bergonzi's stylings on de Curtis' "Non ti scordar di me" will send one back to the recording of Beniamino Gigli, and favorably so. Begonzi also demonstrates a musicianship on this album that is second to none. Bergonzi was truly a "class act". This is one of the most beautiful, most perfect Neapolitan collections ever. This CD is a must have for lovers of Bergonzi, for lovers of Neapolitan songs, or just lovers of perfect singing!!

5 out of 5 stars glad i came across this one!.......2002-01-18

I love this CD and recommend it to anyone who loves opera and clear, beautiful singing. The variety of songs ranges from meltingly romantic to playful and flippant. My Italian is not very good but his diction is so perfect I feel like I understand every word. Bergonzi's big, athletic voice gives the illusion of being barely under control. But of course it is under complete contol, never bellowing. John Wustman's supple, slender accompaniment is perfect, each introduction whets the listener's appetite for the song, which he then gently frames and supports. He does get to shine on "La Daza". This would be a great CD for those new to opera and is worth it for "Vaga luna" alone!

Here's a yummy CD platter, filled to the brim with prime examples of the irrepressible Giuseppe Di Stefano, singing what he was born to sing. The tenor is in close to pristine voice throughout these 1953-7 sessions, with none of the frayed edges and crooning that seeped into his work in the 1960s. More to the point, Di Stefano approaches familiar favorites like "O Solo Mio" and "Santa Lucia" with a kind of seriousness of purpose and elegant restraint that will be revelations to listeners weaned on showboating by the Three Tenors. You may, however, wish to investigate Testament's companion stereo volume, which has better sound and a wider variety of material. But Di Stefano fans will gladly dig in. --Jed Distler

4 out of 5 stars Guiseppe di Strfano sings Neapolitan Songs.......2007-01-09

Neapolitan songs sung by Guiseppe Di Stefano was one of my favourite vynil long play records. I no longer have the facility to play vynil records so I was delighted to be able to acquire this CD version from Amazon. I believe that the original recordings were made in 1953 - certainly my vynil was from that era. The digital remastering is very successful and we aficionados have cause to be grateful. A huge part of the enjoyment is the characteristic Italian accompaniment, flowing, soaring, romantic and full bodied, but never over-intrusive, by the orchestra conducted by Dino Olivieri. I mark the CD 4 and not 5 purely because of the advances, since 1953, in recording techniques.

    5 out of 5 stars Di Stefano e magnifico!.......2006-12-25

Giuseppe Di Stefano's magnificent tenor voice was never put to better use than singing these Neapolitan songs. They were written for his type of voice and he was born to sing them. His voice is liquid gold; it combines sustained lyricism with tremendous emotional urgency and power. Sweetness and plaitiveness are all there when they are needed to express the text. Diction is perfect. The orchestral arrangements recorded here are very operatic and Di Stefano's voice fills every corner of them. These songs are treasures and through Di Stefano they are brought to the the heights of musical expression.

5 out of 5 stars Distefano has spoken!.......2006-11-28

I get furious when people like the gentleman from Australia waste their alloted space delving in minutiae when it comes to reviewing this album of Neapolitan Songs sung by the greatest exponent of this genre (according to people like Pavarotti, Delmonaco and Corelli). No doubt these gems call for a beautiful - yes, beautiful - voice that can also sustain diminuendo, stress - where needed, passion, pathos, etc. it's no secret that every singer since Caruso - tenor, baritone or classification-less has attempted this repertoire; but none has ALL these qualities..this is Pippo's domain and he has spoken! Buy this and thank the Lord it's available now!

4 out of 5 stars Come back to Sorrento with Giuseppe Di Stefano........2003-07-07

These little Neapolitan songs, many dating from the C19th, travel well across international boundaries, language barriers, and time divisions. Giuseppe di Stefano recorded dozens of them during his prime, and Testament has gathered together 21 of them, recorded in the 1950s, on this CD. The producer and conductor was Dino Olivieri who, twenty years earlier, had added to the repertoire himself and conducted countless records of Neapolitan songs sung by Tito Schipa and Beniamino Gigli.

Di Stefano sings here with more musicianship than the latter and a more robust voice than the former. Dino Olivieri, who likes swirling strings and problematic counterpoints, contrives occasionally with Di Stefano to enact musically something in total contradiction to the words. My favorite songs here - I' tu vurria vasà - depicts the singer lying beside his beloved at dawn and hesitating even to kiss her lest it wake her. What we hear is a performance that is so loud as to suggest something that might lift the roof off the Festspielhaus at Bayreuth. Perhaps the blame lies with the balance engineers. The sound engineering is of the "zoom lens" type, evening out all the dynamic changes in Di Stefano's singing so that everything is heard at a steady forte volume throughout.

If this is one of your favorite singers, you'll want to have this CD, but if you love listening to these perennial favorite songs, which always start in a minor key and then switch to the tonic major key half way through each verse, then try versions by other singers.

    5 out of 5 stars Without peer.......2003-03-26

di Stefano is the standard for singing Neapolitan Songs. There is exuberance, warmth, pathos - everything. He puts it all into these gems. I am extremely glad Testament made these discs available. You can't go wrong with these, they are utterly fabulous!!

5 out of 5 stars First and His Best.......2004-08-16

Sergio Franchi's much too short career started with a bang with this album. I have quite a few of his albums on vinyl, but didn't have this one. What I was missing, but now enjoy is Sergio singing beautiful Italian songs with fabulous phrasing, power and passion. Like most singers in his era, he was forced in later years to sing material that wasn't up to his level of talent. Not on this one, and aren't we glad it's on cd. Bravo Sergio!

5 out of 5 stars A must have vocal CD.......2003-08-05

This is a must have CD for all lovers of the vocal art. For those who have only recently come to vocal music by way of Bocelli, Amante or Watson listen to this man and be amazed. Franchi sings circles around these contemporary wannabies. His vocal color, phrasing, legato and above all attention to the lyrics put him in a class by himself. This was his recorded intoduction to America, I bought it as an LP when it first came out. It was and is a vocal find. The sound is still first rate and the performance is wonderful. Now all BMG has to do is release his Broadway I Love You album LSC 2674 and we'll have the best of Sergio on CD.

5 out of 5 stars great voice, beautiful singing.......1999-07-29

I grew up listening to this record and I am delighted to find it on CD. For a classical musician, Franchi's voice is a treat, as he has had classical music training, he sings in tune and with the the skill one expects from a great singer, yet he can sing pop music with the ease that it needs. He is a far better singer than Lanza and I would recommend any of his recordings that you can find.

    5 out of 5 stars "A Must Have".......1999-03-15

I cannot say enough about Franchi voice. I usually do not like opera, but I believe it is just because I had not heard a voice like this. There are two fast songs (2 and 6), which are most powerful. The slower songs have a depth that I have not witnessed before. Everyone must have this CD in their collection.

    5 out of 5 stars wonderful recital.......2005-08-24

As with Vargas recording of 16 Italian songs on his "In My Heart" CD, the selections performed here are sung with great emotion and good technique. Vargas voice is clear, and his pianisimos are well done. His voice stays clear and tention free throughout the recital. I find it disappointing that this recording seems to be unavailable for now. Vargas is singing songs that are not often performed today. One must seek out the works of Careras and possibly Domingo to find some of the neopoliton pieces. I feel fortunate enough to have purchased Canzoni.

This is a cheap recording.YES a great bargin.I liked this cd but found ramon vargas's singing a little boring at times. He does have a beautiful voice, but on this cd not as much passion as these singers had in the same repitore:montserrat caballe, pavarotti, cecilia bartoli, and andrea bocelli. This cd is still not to bad to listen to.Listen with open hearts and full bellies. May the eternal father bless those who listen to such classical music, and may his wife the goddess lull you to sleep at night with her operatic voice.THE GODDESS told me that ramon vargos the mexican tenor is so blessed with a voice, and that he is half iguana.I recommend you buy all his many cds from amazon is voice will have you.anon.

Cd's nowadays are kind of expensive. Especially if you think about the artist's quality. However, this cd is worth every penny. The best part though is that it is cheap. It is a live performance in Guanajuato Mexico. It is just Vargas singing arias with Negri on piano backing him. Even if you don't like opera you'll enjoy classic latin songs like boleros; Vargas sings Grever's Te quiero Dijiste and two other dulcet songs. Ramon Vargas is the singer to listen nowadays where there is a lack of talent and more image.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful recital by a great modern artist.......2002-07-13

Ramon Vargas sometimes pushes his small but lovely tenor voice beyond its means in live performance--witness his "Boheme" at the Metropolitan in the 2002 broadcast season--but this recital of songs, given before a native Mexican audience with whom he verhy obviously establishes a rapport, goes a long way towards explaining why Vargas is so highly prized. Not everything here is totally idiomatic (his "Feneste che lucive" and "'A vucchella" lack the sensuousness of earlier tenors like de Lucia and Caruso), but he definitely knows what he's doing and is obviously having a great time. Highly recommended, especially for the bargain price!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2001-07-23

Many Tenors in the past have recorded Neopolitan songs, though none of them compare to the new young tenor on the scene Ramon Vargas. This recording, taped live in 1995, shows Vargas at his best. He has a powerful voice, and it is even from bottom to top. He has a legato line that reminds me of the great Placido Domingo. In ideale, Vargas hits the final note in a full tone piano that is simply wonderful. This cd is outstanding, and Vargas is the tenor of the future. Snyonr who loves good singing should get this cd.

For connoisseurs of Neapolian songs, these discs from Testament are golden, and no one sings these songs better than di Stefano. He has the charm and style in his delivery as few others have.
After hearing him in these songs, others may sound like mere pretenders. I can't recommend this disc highly enough if you like great singing and canzoni Napoli.

Now this is what I would call one beautiful CD.It shows that Pippo was the greatest tenor in the world during his reign. His voice is extremely beautiful and the warmth and emotionalism are incredible.I listen to his " Non T'amo Piu " endlessly. You just can't find singing like Pippo at his best even going back to Gigli. This CD is a must have for anyone even remotely interested in classical tenor voices. They don't meke them like Pippo anymore and fortunately his voice and style of singing will live forever with his many recordings.Do yourselves a big favor and buy this one.

      4 out of 5 stars A smooth voice in a smooth repertoire........2004-04-04

Cesare Siepi's bass voice is greatly underrepresented in the CD catalogue. This album lets us know what an artist he was. His interpretations are always just right, and never over the top. Only an occasional accent slips in. His English diction should be a model for all singers. I lost no more than 5% of the words. The wonderful way he caresses his way into "Night and Day" or sails through "Begin the Beguine" are wonderful examples of his artistry. Siepi includes the often omitted verses to each song, and that is a plus.

The sound quality is more than acceptable. It isn't digital, but here the fidelity comes from the artistry and not the sound itself. In fact the sound quality is a lot better than the 1955 recording date might indicate. I was not bothered in the least ... in fact I was pleasantly surprised.

There are unfortunately lots of typos in the notes that should have been corrected. Myto should review such things before putting them out on the market.

Siepi's way with the Italian songs is equally enjoyable. How nice to have someone sing them instead of bawling them to the rafters. This is a winner album, and it would be 5 stars if the sound were a little more modern.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful collection of songs performed by great artist.......1999-05-24

Despite the inferior sound quality of this CD, it is pleasing to have this unusual collection available. Cesare Siepi is a great artist, with the best English diction of any classical Italian singer within memory. Although I remember him best as the most dashing and truly seductive Don Giovanni at the Met, he is equally convincing with a popular song. A rare achievement! Siepi, I love you as much today as I did when I was an infatuated teenager.

5 out of 5 stars This is perhaps the greatest undiscovered tenor voice........1999-06-18

A beautiful commanding voice. Franco Bonisolli has elements of Franco Corelli, Mario Del Monaco, and Mario Lanza rolled into one. He sounds like how you might expect Pavarotti to sound (incredibly rich, deep and powerful, based on his formidable presence, rather than eloquent and quite comfortable on the high notes). Nonetheless, Bonisolli is at his best when he meets and exceeds the composers' expectations of climactic high notes.

Highly recommended for all fans of tenors and Neapolitan Songs.
