Not the best Charpentier Te Deum, but good value for price.......2007-04-09

This CD is shorter than the Te Deum CD released by harmonia mundi France, performed under the direction of William Christie, but its contents, aside from the headlining 'Te Deum' are different, and the performance quality and recording quality is comparable, and the price is far more attractive. Since Naxos has done an entire series on Charpentier's sacred works, this CD, as part of that economy set, is well worth the investment.

This isn't the famous -Te Deum- setting.......2001-04-08

The casual browser will want to take note that the -Te Deum- that appears on this record is not the fully orchestrated one one with the well-known Prelude. All the works on this recording are for choir, soloists, and continuo alone.

The most interesting piece on this recording is in fact the Mass, which is an unusual setting in that few French composers of the high baroque wrote concerted Masses with soloist as well as choral passages. The Mass is probably the most interesting piece here.

Also worthy of note is the Canticle of Zachariah, -Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel-, which is given a deep contrapuntal treatment.

This is not Charpentier's showiest sacred music, but this is a good performance of these journeymanlike works.

Brilliant, outclasses Herreweghe's 1982 recording.......2005-01-27

Jean-Philippe Rameau is remembered today mainly for his stage works ("Hippolyte et Aricie", "Platée", "Les Indes Galantes"), all written after he had spent many years working as an organist and keyboard player in relative obscurity. During this time he was employed by the Church, and the motets gathered on this recording bear testimony to his earlier work, being the three motets that have survived. (There is a fourth work, "Laboravi", which consists of only one verse and needs less than three minutes to perform; Niquet has chosen to leave it out of this performance.) They are wonderfully varied and make it very evident that lovers of baroque music ignore France and Rameau in particular at their peril. Here there is some delightful choral singing and absolutely heavenly instrumental parts, capped by some of the most attractive solo singing I have heard recently: I don't want to pick out any one of the soloists because they all deserve unmitigating praise. The 1993 Radio France recording is brilliant, capturing all the nuances of this complex music in a broad, transparent panorama that makes for exquisite listening pleasure.

I was able to compare Niquet's disc with the Harmonia Mundi recording of "In convertendo" and "Quam dilecta" made by Philippe Herreweghe and his Chapelle Royale in 1982 in a church in Ghent in Belgium. Herreweghe, too, had some wonderful soloists, but the recording is to my mind inferior to the Niquet because of the sound quality: the singers are much more distant and much less brilliantly captured on disc, also I felt that the English singer Stephen Varcoe (baritone) was not quite up to the standard on the Concert Spirituel recording. Herreweghe only recorded two of Rameau's "grand motets", but he added "Laboravi", so if you need to hear that you will have to buy both discs.

A French Baroque gem.......2000-02-08

Herve Niquet's conscientious conducting and a cast that's a veritable who's who of French baroque vocal work make this rerelease of a 1993 French recording well worth a listen. Rameau was unquestionably a musical genius, and so it's a bit upsetting that only four of the many sacred works he must have written during his life have survived to this day; three of them are on this recording. Because of the chronological organization of the three motets, one can truly hear the development of Rameau's artistry, technical sophistication and mastery of form. The last motet, In Convertendo, should convince anyone that the underappreciated Rameau deserves a place in the high throne of baroque music. Certainly the French believe so; his somewhat hunched marble form graces the entrance of the Paris Garnier.

High praises must go to the crystalline playing of Le Concert Spirituel, whose sense of balance, baroque musical practice, and spiritual ardor are essentially perfect. The emsemble singing is splendid, tight and unified without being overly blended. And I can't help but be completely entralled by the ringing, angelic timbre of haute-contre Jean-Paul Fouchecourt, who gives the "aria" in "In Convertendo" the sort of incredibly passionate attack that makes one listen to every note as if it were a vindication of the power, and struggle, of the human spirit. A similar sense of struggle and pleading comes across in "Converte," in the same motet, in which a pensive bass solo is interrupted several bars later by an utterly cheerful Rameauian violin riff that musically paints the next line of the text from psalm 125: "We sigh after thee as the lands of the south sigh after the overflowing waters that feed them." In what you could call musical transubstantiation, we actually hear the waters. Rameau had the enviable talent for combining his musical dexterity with a vivid, if somewhat literal, imagination, and so he brings a glowing, vibrant color to his sacred writing; fortunately for us, Niquet and his devoted cast of singers and instrumentalists have the same talent.

Another winner from Herve Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel.......2000-06-29

I love this CD. Herve Niquet, conductor of Le Concert Spirituel, is a champion of the music of J. B. de Boismortier, and when you hear this disc you'll understand why. Boismortier was a skillful but unpretentious composer, and very popular in his day--when his critics accused him of writing music that was too simple and easy, he would shrug and reply, "I make money." "Ballets de Village" is French Baroque music at its best--not very deep or demanding, but pleasant, graceful, and charming from beginning to end. There is nothing profound or tragic here, just pure enjoyment, and at the low Naxos price this disc is an incredible bargain. Each movement is played with great enthusiasm by the Concert: they sound like they're having a great time. This CD is also an interesting novelty: Boismortier's compositions make extensive use of the musette (a type of bagpipe) and the vielle (a type of hurdy-gurdy), which gives this music a rustic, pastoral sound that reminds me of contemporary Celtic music.

Sterling example of excellence.......2006-10-19

In a successful follow-up to Vol.1, Naxos outdone all yet again with this stunning compilation, part of the Grand Motets series. A bold and grand interpretation, this recording is the undoubted first choice for anyone who wants the best of the best.

Lully was a master of colour, and to this day still finds in the modern listener, an understanding and connectedness that can be said of few other composers of his day. I warmly applaud all of the performers on this album for the sterling example of excellence, and whole-heartedly recommend it to everyone. A solid 5 out of 5.

Deeply felt music.......2005-07-10

Of the three volumes of Lully that Herve Niquet has recorded (with thanks to Naxos for re-releasing them) this second installment is my favorite, although I recommend the others as well.

There are four substantial "grands motets" included here, which require a baroque orchestra, chorus and a quintet of soloists. The first, Quare fremuerunt, is a jovial piece with energy to spare. The other three, O Lachrymae, Dies irae, and De profundis are all much more subdued and sombre (which I happen to like very much).

For all of his bluster and ruthless domination over the musical scene in Paris, Lully was undoubtedly a very good composer. There are many sublime turns of phrase to be found in these motets, and the energy he is able to generate can be truly exciting.

Part of the reason these works come across so well is the superb performance given here by Le Concert Spirituel. This group has a very good grasp on how to execute the French style, and the playing and singing is nearly flawless. With a group of soloist including Veronique Gens, John-Paul Fouchecourt and Peter Harvey, there is no lack of great singing.

If you like French baroque vocal music, this recording should fit very nicely into your collection, and provide much pleasure. Buy it if you can.

This recording is one of the best I ever heard on Lully.

It is full of sentiment and the recording, and performances are first rate.

Lully rises to the top and it is a pity that is not performed very often.

Make it your manifest destiny to own this compilation of music. These scores are given to us by the world's most gifted composers. Performing are "heavenly" choirs and instrumentalists demonstrating true virtuosity. Large choirs perform with such intonation qualities! There appears to be just one voice in each section. Your heart will pound when you are lifted so high you realize that you have stopped breathing; likewise, with the sudden timbre of the minor you allow yourself to remember tears. The emotional roller-coaster ride will affect your inner being. It is appropriately subtitled: Classical Music for Reflection and Meditation. It is a true gift to hear the genius of Byrd, Bach, Mozart, Faure, and others, performed so well.

An explosive welcome to 'Le Chapelle Royal'.......2001-03-01

In contradiction to what the title of this CD indicates, not only Grands Motets but also two Petits Motets are recorded. They form a moment of rest between the three festive large-scale 'coronation' Motets written for the Chapelle Royal. While the Petits Motets confirm the reputation of French baroque music being tender and sweet, the Grands Motets demonstrate that French baroque is baroque in any sense: full of contrast, brilliance, colour, drama and complexity. The motets recorded here date from the 1680's, showing Lully's talent at the peak of his creativity. Le Concert Spirituel's performance of this music is in my opinion a reference, which allows to forget any other performance: the warm and full sound of the continuo, the extreme precision in orchestra and chorus allowing to hear the polyphonic aspects of the works, the dancing and elegance make this recording incomparable. In combination with an excellent set of singers (including the remarkable J.P. Fouchécourt!), Niquet transforms each motet into a unique whole, demonstrating that the 'Gesammtkunstwerk' aspect of Lully's operas is also valid for his religious music.

Without wishing to doubt the integrity of my fellow-reviewers, I really do wonder where some of them have their ears: This award winning CD (Editor's Choice in both Gramophone and BBC Music magazines) is one of the best recordings of French baroque cantatas that I have ever heard, its qualities belying its unbelievably small price and dwarfing the competition from Danièle Forget and L'Ensemble Arion on Analekta (only the cantatas). That the music itself is "typically French" is a comment that will help nobody: The whole point of this disk is to establish what French baroque music was like, namely a mixture of more traditional French styles with "modern" Italianate influences. The pieces recorded here are chamber music and should in no wise be expected to rival orchestral or operatic repertoire as we know it today. The two cantatas (totalling 34 minutes) are excellently sung by brilliant French soprano Sandrine Piau, who manages to capture much of the wistfully archaic atmosphere as well as the intense dramatic moments to be found in such "mini-operas"; to call her voice "brittle" is to be more than unkind, and personally I found listening to her to be an exquisite experience to be treasured, her training enabling her to lead the listener through all the nuances and pitfalls of Clérambault's style. And thanks to Naxos for giving us some excellent engineering with perfect balance and a booklet containing introductions and translations of the text, making for an hour of baroque bliss!

The instrumentalists of Concert Spirituel are well-known soloists in their own right, and the Simphonie and the Sonata prima meet all the demands of stylish, idiosyncratic performance of this exclusive music. A special treat is in store when one arrives at the Suite for Harpsichord, which is played delightfully by Blandine Rannou, who has since made a number of prize-winning baroque harpsichord recordings for the French label ZigZag Territoires. This is simply amazing value for money, and the CD should be heard on high-class equipment to be appreciated fully.

Clerambault is best known for his cantatas, and here we have a disc that features two of the best ones. Orphee in particular has been recorded often, but for good reason. It is one of the best French cantatas, and shows Clerambault to be a gifted composer. Sandrine Piau has never been my favorite singer, as she can occasionally sound a bit brittle, but these are none the less quite enjoyable performances. The instrumental works are also very good, and are played with sensitivity and style.

This CD contains an instrumental sonata and two `cantata', typically French, featuring a `high' soprano. Although I have ripped all to the hard drive of my Mac and use the best speakers one can buy through Apple these sound `thin'. Not bad but nothing to get `Wowed' over.

You will play this CD no less than 10,000,000 times. It is that good.
Sandrine piau's voice is the strongest, most articulate, and lovliest I have ever heard. The compositions on this CD are full of light, hope, spring, and reflection.
I love when beautiful music tells a story, both spoken and unspoken. These selections certainly tell some wondrous tales. The musical passages, the violins and harpsichord speak, swoon and sway like butterflies and dragonflies dancing a ballet.
I simply have worn out the "Orphee" track.
Sandrine Piau's voice soars and trills with such clarity and beautiful control; yet sounds free and effortless.
This is the CD that convinced me to seek out all of her works that I could get my eager hands on.
Trust me, it IS this good. you will not be disappointed.
"Allez, Orphee Allez!"

Very nice (and inexpensive) 17th century Liturgical music.......2007-03-18

For the longest time, I tended to look down my nose at Naxos releases for no good reason whatsoever, except for the very mistaken belief that if I get the same work for three times the price from Hyperion, it will be three times better. Then, I started discovering that Naxos had some works which were simply not available on Hyperion or one of those other high falutin labels. Naxos probably doesn't do large ensemble works as well as the big guys, but for simple works like these, they do just fine thank you. I especially like the liturgical music from this period, as I think the secular sound all sounds overly brassy, like the Purcell piece used to theme 'Masterpiece Theatre'. For a very good price, we get a complete requiem mass and 'Litanies a la Vierge' coming in at about 61 minutes. Notes are a bit thinner than what you get from Hyperion and the Latin is not translated, but the Latin text is there.
