Album Description

Perspective plays a key role in Silverstein's new album, "Discovering The Waterfront." It is a central theme in songs that explore self-determination and coping with change. Addiction to negative relationships is another recurrent theme, from the opening track; "Your Sword Versus My Dagger" to "My Heroine," lyricist/vocalist Shane Told is beyond candid as he tells stories of obsession, hopelessness and ultimately redemption. The music is flawlessly executed, with powerful instrumentation and the melodic/raw vocal juxtaposition that Told delivers seamlessly.

Silverstein formed in Burlington, Ontario, on the outskirts of Toronto in 2000. Emerging from the thriving hardcore scene in their hometown, the band began honing their sound, and recording whenever possible. Two EPs followed and a former member of Grade began talking the band up to his friends at Victory Records. The band signed with Victory shortly afterward. They released "When Broken Is Easily Fixed" which went on to sell over 200,000 copies worldwide, earning the band a spot in Alternative Press' 100 Bands You Need To Know in the spring of 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Helped Me Through Some Hard Times.......2007-06-05

Silverstein's one of a kind album, Discovering The Waterfront, has so many tracks that are so doggone good that it's just simply chilling. Very few albums touch me that way this one has. Everyone goes through the kind of things like these songs deal with. This album can be as relevant to your life just as it was mine. It helped me through some tough times and surprised me on how much I had in common with some of these songs. The famous tracks "Your Sword vs. My Dagger", "Fist Wrapped in Blood", and "Discovering the Waterfront" are all great songs full of meaningful lyrics. I can't praise this record enough.

5 out of 5 stars best.......2007-02-28

This is one of my faviorite albums! It's a little on the sadder side of things but it's really great music.

5 out of 5 stars Silverstein "Amazing".......2006-12-15

I Have listened to both Discovering the Water Front and When Broken is Easily Fixed but i have to say DTWF is much much better. Unlike many modern bands who enhance their voices to make them sound better SIlverstein dosent do it and they sound great. I saw them live in pittsburgh in october and it was amazing. All of their songs are good to listen to unlike some bands who have boring terrible songs just to fill space on the album. Currently my favorite song on the album is Call it Karma but i still think all the other songs are great too. Overall if you like emo/scremo music buy it see how you like it u might be supprised.

5 out of 5 stars Discovering a better sound.......2006-08-03

I have to admit I never really liked Silverstein's first album "When Broken Is Easily Fixed", I found the music to be just like every other band except worst, and his voice sounded terrible, now I am quite lucky that there was nothing better in the shop for me to spend my money on, because this album is way way above the level of their old album, the first thing we notice is the lead singer's voice, it has definitely improved and I could honestly say I like it now, also there si much less screaming which helps their music sound better, the second thing you notice is the definite improvement in guitar works, there is not a single part of a song that just relies on chords, melody is omnipresent. The drumwork is also much better and the overall effect of these mark a definite improvement and help create a much more polished album than their last release. Silverstein composed a lot of different styles of songs, as much as the hardcore emo "my sword versus you dagger" or emo ballads like "Discovering the waterfront" and of course their hit "Smile In Your Sleep" which is a truly beautiful song, so if you didn't like the old Silverstein too much, I still advise you to give this one a try, and if you liked the old one, this one could become your album of the year. A must-have for anyone who wants a complete collection of emo, well done Silverstein, you have made me fall in love again.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-07-06

Silverstein is the very essence of emo. They have some EXTREMELY talented guitar players. wow. The lead singer's voice is Amazing, and the lyrics are wonderful. By far one of the most professional bands in the industry. This record doesn't sound like some kid recording from his garage. I definitely recommend it, but only if you're not looking to be cheered up.

This powerhouse set of live recordings from early in Robben Ford's distinguished career boasts solo-laden 10-minute-plus versions of B.B. King's "Sweet Sixteen" and John Lee Hooker's "It's My Own Fault." Ford, who has worked with Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, and George Harrison, plays surprisingly sweet, agile saxophone on Don Raye's jazz ballad "You Don't Know What Love Is." His voice--if still that of a very young man--is throaty and melodic on the King and Hooker cuts. But it's his guitar that takes centerstage. Owing heaps to electric bluesmen B.B., Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Mike Bloomfield, Ford's rich tone, deliberate lines, and tuneful bends were world-class even in 1972. --James Rotondi

3 out of 5 stars A Young Robben Plays It Slow And Simmering.......2003-01-30

This collection of old live cuts by Robben Ford is the first of two releases on Avenue Jazz's new Vault Classics label (the second is 1999's Sunrise). Recordings were culled from performances at the Ash Grove in Hollywood, and the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach (both in California) back in 1972. At the very green age of 20 or 21, Robben displays unbelievable ability on both guitar and sax. Though he would certainly improve over the years, his mastery of the guitar in particular should be painfully evident to even the most jaded listener. Tone; control; phrasing; technique; it's all there, albeit in its embryonic form.

Though there is one cut that sheds light on Robben's jazz side (You Don't Know What Love Is), the selections on this release focus almost exclusively on Robben playing the blues (thus the title!). Curiously most of the tracks chosen are slow blues. This is certainly not a horrible thing, but it does in my opinion make the pacing lag quite a bit (this is a 60 minute CD and 42 minutes are devoted to slow blues). Also, because this isn't a one off performance, but rather pieces of several performances, Robben starts two of these off with the very same lick (hey, the guy IS human)! All that aside, this is a great opportunity to hear vintage Ford playing live. I absolutely applaud Avenue Jazz for unearthing these gems and hope there're many more to come.

For those of you looking for details, the lineup Robben used was: Paul Nagle on keyboards, Stan Poplin on bass, and Jim Baum on drums. Times on the tracks are: Sweet Sixteen (12:33); You Drive A Hard Bargain (5:42); It's My Own Fault (10:28); You Don't Know What Love Is (8:49); My Time After Awhile (3:34); Raining In My Heart (10:33); and Blue & Lonesome (8:25). For some inexplicable reason, they included this last track on Sunrise as well.

Although the track selection can make this album seem slightly one dimensional at times, it is a great opportunity to hear the raw sounds of a blossoming guitar giant in his formative years. I'd say if you're largely a fan of Robben's blues style, then you'll enjoy this. If you lean more towards his jazz side, then Sunrise will sound more adventurous and varied to you due to a stronger blend of Ford's jazzy/blues mix. Of course if you're REAL smart you'll just buy both. Believe me, you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars A Quintessential Blues Album.......2003-01-29

First of all, disregard pfinegan's review. If you like tasteful blues, this is your ticket as a listener and player. I'm a huge Eric Clapton fan, and right about the time I felt I was good enough on the guitar to start tackling some of E.C.s blues tunes, my teacher told me about Robben Ford. I picked up this album and immediately shoved Clapton aside and began learning these tunes. I will admit, some of the songs get a little redundant; they're very long, he uses a lot of the same licks and changes, and just about every song is in the key of C. But these songs are perfect templates for learning the blues. He uses a lot of licks that can be somewhat easily figured out and incorporated into anyone's playing. His playing is just so smooth and tasteful and passionate, some of the songs almost bring me to tears, especially It's My Own Fault. Whether you're a player or just love to listen to the blues, a blues enthusiasts' collection surely wouldn't be complete without this album. This is definitly one of my desert island CDs.

5 out of 5 stars If you had heard it back then.......2002-09-27

You would have seen it coming. This guy is the most tasteful and enjoyable guitarist to listen to today. This is basic stuff compared to his current work. However, it is still a blast to listen to. I am buying everything by Ford.

5 out of 5 stars A blue guitar lecture.......2001-11-14

First of all I have to admit that I've always been a Robben Ford fan. Having said that, in my opinion, it is indisputable that this is a fantastic CD.
If you are a blues fan and you like "blue guitar" played the way it should be: intense, passionate and with great feeling; if you think that slow blues are the real deal, do not hesitate and buy this CD! It is going to be your bliss for the foreseeable future.

        5 out of 5 stars A Long-kept Secret.......2005-05-22

One always wondered if the Hungarian Quartet's studio work actually represented their true artistry. Now with this unexpected set from Music & Arts, one hears a different group, expanding any previous boundaries. Their unity and freedom, lack of inhibition paired with a structural wisdom make for wonders. I find their depth and immediacy surpassing the Budapest, Busch, Vegh, and many others. The sound is so excellent on these concert performances. A real treasure for the music and performance. May one hope for more?

3 out of 5 stars for dedicated Graham Parker fans.......2000-11-19

Graham Parker live solo acoustic a a small club in Tokyo. Obvious highlight: "Discovering Japan." Hard to understand the cover choices. Unlikely to win any new converts with this one.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, not essential.......2000-04-23

It's certainly worth owning this disc, and fascinating to see how Graham Parker simplifies his songs in a solo setting, but giving this five stars is absurd. Parker is good, but not at his best solo. That said, there are many fine things about this project. A couple songs from slick studio albums might actually have benefited from the solo format. Parker's cover of Billy Idol's "Sweet 16" is a stroke of genius and the best thing on the album. But don't look for revelations and don't believe all those five-star reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Just like being there.......2000-01-31

A great live album in that you have a gifted performer, singing tremendous songs, in a setting that makes feel like you are there. Perfect companion to Live! Alone In America.

        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection.......1999-12-18

Ignore the aptly titled "dirty linen" review above. This cd is stripped down and raw in the best sense. Graham has the voice, the songs and the intensity to pull this off and that's exactly what he does. This cd and Acid Bubblegum are essential for all Graham Parker fans.

        5 out of 5 stars 5 stars.......1999-11-03

some great solo acoustic versions of songs from "Burning Questions" are here...

But then again, I prefer the solo versions of most of Graham's songs.

"Struck by Lightning" and "12 Haunted Episodes" are also super...
