About the Artist
Emanuel Olivieri is principal violist of the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, and professor of viola and theory at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. He has performed extensively as solo and chamber musician in such venues as the Casals Festival, the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, the Museo de Arte de Ponce, and the Carmel Bach Festival in California, where he served as co-principal viola. Album Description
This recording includes the most important pieces composed for viola by puertorrican composers. Jack Delano's Sonata from 1953 is the first work to incorporate puertorrican folk music into a sonata-form genre. Roberto Milano's Duo (1992) is written in a hindemithean neoclassical style. The Meditation (1973) by Ramirez makes use of the viola introspective tone. Quinton's Romanza (1920) is a melancolic piece rooted in the romantic showpiece tradition. Pedreira's Lullaby (1954) has a poignant moorish tune set against an impressionistic harmonic background.
