Editorial Reviews
OPERA NEWS, August 2001
...these Latin American songs are absolute charmers and Hanchard's performances are exquisite...an unusually beautiful and touching album.

THE NEW YORKER, September 3, 2001
[these affecting songs]...will be as attractive to Jobim fans as they will to lovers of classical art song.

Album Description
Fertile Ground Music (FGM-NYC) releases its debut recording, Once Canciones (Eleven Songs), featuring soprano Dana Hanchard and guitarist Bill Girolamo. Inspired as much by the traditional classical genre as by the rich tradition of his native Ecuador, Diego Luzuriaga's intimate song settings for voice and acoustic guitar create an important and innovative new recording.

The CD is accompanied by a full-color, 28-page booklet that includes notes by the composer, remarks by Dana and Diego, and full translations. Captured digitally to 24-bit, Once Canciones was recorded by George Wellington at the Recital Hall at SUNY, Purchase, New York. The disc was co-produced by Mr.Wellington and Ms. Hanchard.

FGM-NYC is a label dedicated to supporting and showcasing musicians and composers whose artistry defies the constraints imposed by current marketing categorization and genres.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A gem of a recording.......2002-07-30

I bought this CD based on a glowing review in Opera News (as did another reviewer), and I am so glad I took a chance on it -- I fell in love with it immediately. The songs are by turns charming, poignant, tender, and haunting. They manage to be simple without being simplistic; tuneful without being trite.

I wasn't familiar with Dana Hanchard until I got this CD. Frankly, her voice isn't one I'd be fond of ordinarily -- the vibrato, especially in the passagio, is a little tight and fast, and her tone is a little duskier than I usually care for -- but it works beautifully on these songs. She expresses herself easily and naturally, and it's clear this project was dear to her heart.

I definitely recommend this one. It's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2001-09-08

The words in all eleven songs really touch me, they talk about friends, family and situations that everybody can relates to. And its even better if you add to these words the voice of Dana Hanchard.

5 out of 5 stars a revelation..........2001-07-31

The review in _Opera News_ is absolutely right. The composer, Luzuriaga, was unfamiliar to me, but these songs are indeed delicious, and repay careful listening. Most astonishing of all is the performance of Dana Hanchard. Already a respected performer of Baroque music, she's a revelation here: both voice and performances are enthralling. You'd have to go back to Nan Merriman's exquisite (and "breakthrough") performances (on the Testament label) of songs by Mompou, Montsalvatge, and Turina to find anything in similar repertoire approaching the intensity and unusual vocal allure exhibited on this album.

Heard a cut from Once Canciones on WNYC as well and loved it. Thankfully, Amazon had it available. This music is absolutely enchanting!
