There are many recordings whose theme is music for, about, or in praise of the Virgin Mary. This one does a far better job than most--from the outstanding musical selections to the excellent performances to the superb instrumental and vocal arrangements. The choice of tempos and the overall pacing are absolutely right, and the individual voices work well either solo or in ensemble. There's a huge variety of musical selections, from 10th-century Spain to 16th-century England--many are by anonymous composers, but Praetorius, Nanino, and Morales also are represented. These five performers manage to create an atmosphere that captures the energy and spontaneity of a concert. The only unfortunate thing about a recording such as this is that it may not get the wide attention and distribution that it deserves. --David Vernier

The more you listen to it, the more you hear in it. The small size of the consort give it an intimacy that coupled with the quality of the recording, and
the power of the arrangements and performance, really grabs you. "Heu, Teneri Partus" absolutely takes me away.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Treatment of 'Transitional' Music.......2005-12-28

'Grand Tour' performed by His Majesty's Sagbutts and Coronets is a collection of sixteenth and seventeenth centuryh Italian, Spanish, and German brass choir music; however, the instrumentation is not limited to brass, as a harpsicord or chamber organ appear in eighteen out of twenty-two of the pieces.

What interests me most about these performnances is how they are representatives of music which bridged the period between more highly stylized and 'tinny' old music and the Baroque and Classical periods of Bach, Hayden, and Mozart.

I also find it interesting that to my ear, there is very little difference in sound from the pieces done in the three different countries. This suggests to me a far greater amount of cross-pollination of musical style and doctrine than you may think for the sixteenth century.

Another very interesting discovery is that the term 'coronet' referred to some instruments which are a whole lot different from those reaching the lips of Louie Armstrong or Bix Beiderbeck.

Of all the recordings done by this group, this may be the most enjoyable introduction to their 'terroir'.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to a fabulous ensemble.......2003-10-23

This is a wonderful recording of some very entertaining and enjoyable music. Composers like Scheidt, Marini and Buonamente are represented here.
If you haven't heard a cornett and sackbut (the early trombone) ensemble before, this CD would be a good place to start. I warn you, you'll get addicted!

I am very fond of this recording because I heard some of these pieces played live by this group in Melbourne in 1993. What a wonderful night that was!

5 out of 5 stars Raw, rowdy and great, good fun!.......2002-11-29

Like street buskers of old, these two groups--Ensemble Anonymus (sic) and Strada--breath vitality and glee into ancient "good-time music" that deserves to be partied to again. "...There's plenty of dance music here for your next joust or pig roast," the packaging suggests. Indeed, the hooting, hollering, foot stomping, drum beating, pipe trilling, string strumming and bagpipe droning of these French Canadian artists enliven dances that are old favorites at Renaissance Faires and S.C.A. feasts, and others that should be. Appropriately (or inappropriately!) enough, I discovered this CD at the tranquil Cloisters museum in New York City, along with two discs of slightly less boisterous (but equally fun) music, "Istanpitta!: A Medieval Dance Band" and "Istanpitta II: Medieval Dances", by New York's Ensemble for Early Music Ensemble. The three together made for an excellent purchase, very complimentary and well worth the cost of the trip! Other good, rousing collections of medieval and Renaissance revel music include: "The Little Barley-Corne: Winter Revels from the Renaissance" by the Toronto Consort and the New London Consort's compilation album called "Sinners and Saints: The Ultimate Medieval and Renaissance Music Collection".
