The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars Summer music is here --- again!.......2007-06-14

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-13

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

5 out of 5 stars Great Seller.......2007-06-12

Service was excellent and product in excellent condition. Would love to do business with seller again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sounds!.......2007-06-09

For those of us who remember crusing down the highway with the radio blasting, you can't beat this CD. You just have to sing along. It's a reminder of the times when music was exciting and fun. It's simply great music.

Amazon.com essential recording

If you need some pointy-headed pundit to sell you on the merits of Pet Sounds, your money might be better spent on an ear specialist. Brian Wilson's gift to 20th-century music elevated this pop album into a beguiling musical and emotional cogency that still operates outside pop culture's fickle space-time continuum--and limited critical lexicon. There's never been another record to compare (Rubber Soul, its inspiration, is close; Sgt. Pepper's, its response, misses the point), and certainly no album has been as dissected, overanalyzed, and predigested for public consumption. In 1997 Capitol Records devoted an entire four-disc box set, The Pet Sounds Sessions, to its thorough deconstruction. The techno-marvel centerpiece of that project--the album's first true stereo mix, painstakingly conjured out of multitape session sources by producer-engineer Mark Linett (under Wilson's supervision)--was at once heresy and revelation. Now the label has gratifyingly seen fit to offer both mixes on a single disc (along with alternate versions of "Hang On to Your Ego," the original title of "I Know There's An Answer"), an idea that should please the orthodox and heretics alike. And while the album has always clearly been The Brian Wilson Show featuring the Beach Boys, David Leaf's concise new notes attempt to be more inclusive of a wider band perspective. The result (three of the five band members claim credit for the album title) sometimes resembles Rashomon. If Pet Sounds forever crystallized the band's various creative (in)differences, it also became Wilson's grand karmic joke on his band mates; its burgeoning reputation (Mojo magazine's panel of pop experts once elected it greatest album of all time) guaranteed they would sing its songs--and praises--until the end. And if putting two different versions of the same album on one disc seems like overkill, look at the bright side: it's a perfect excuse to listen to the glorious Pet Sounds twice. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-07-12

This is a good album. Thus said, I don't see it deserving being on any top 10 or even top 50 list of greatest albums ever.

3 out of 5 stars Food For Thought.......2007-06-16

First of all, I understand that I am suppose to like this album.

I keep trying . . . and I get nowhere.

Well, okay, not nowhere . . . but certainly not where everyone else says I should be.

This is not a rock album.

This is overkill.

This is a bunch of studio musicians (maybe the finest in the land) doing layer after layer of unique and different sounds.

You can pet them if you like.

Not me.

The problem is, there are so many layers of fat that the genius of Brian Wilson is lost somewhere in the digestive "track".

This album does not satisfy my hunger . . . but it undoubtedly satisfied the overweight ego of a true musical genius.

This album has more to do with Phil Spector and his "wall of sound" than anything else.

Whenever I listen to this "mound of flesh", I always long for the leaner-meaner sounds of rock n' roll.

I can think of at least forty albums from the late-sixties that I prefer over this one.

Ones that I think have more merit.

In any case, this album is an acquired taste.

It is not required eating.

I, for one, would rather be sitting at a "Beggars Banquet" and listening to something with a few less calories.

Before, during and after meals, The Beach Boys were never considered all that hip to begin with.

They certainly NEVER represented "My Generation".

5 out of 5 stars The Best album ever.......2007-05-31

Simply the best album of the XX century, it was recorded in 1966 but we can hear it today and sounds very recent, just as if it was recorded last week, an album that can sound that good is really good.

There is no doubt on Brian Wilson's genius, this albums proves it.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Treat! Especially the DVD!.......2007-06-27

This version of "Pet Sounds" is a real treat for fans; the fuzzy green packaging is very sturdily built and is nice to the touch although it remains to be seen how well it will stand the elements over time. As to the discs themselves if you already have a mono and a stereo version of the album then the cd will be nothing new for you. I have never been a fan of duplicating albums with both mono and stereo versions on one disc but for me as I only had a mono version prior to this version, I didn't mind getting this for the stereo version and especially for the DVD 5.1 surround version. What I didn't like was that "Trombone Dixie" is missing and it was on the Dutch version of the stereo version that I used to have years ago.

The dvd has some promo videos and candid interviews with members of the band and especially of Brian Wilson but the sound quality of the DVD Dolby Surround is truly fantastic. You just end up hearing sounds that you didn't know were there when you were just listening to the cd. It's made me decide to forego the cds and to go straight for the DVD whenever I want to listen to the album. For this reason alone I'd say go get this version unless they end up just releasing the DVD in an mlps format the way they have just done with U2's "Rattle and Hum". If they do that in the future, I'd say go and get that if you already have the cd. Oh yeah, and they really should include "Trombone Dixie" in addition the "Hang On to Your Ego" that they included with the cd but not with the dvd as well as the other outtake sounds that were part of the bonus tracks that were released in the 1991 stereo version.

5 out of 5 stars Confessions from a curious listener.......2007-01-20

I must confess, I bought Pet Sounds out of curiosity, since it has been ranked as one of the best albums in history, behind the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. In addition, I also confess that before Pet Sounds I had very limited knowledge of the Beach Boys and/or Brian Wilson's music and after playing it once I sincerely say: PET SOUNDS IS INDEED A MASTERPIECE CRAFTED BY A GIFTED ARTIST !!!.

The 40th Anniversary edition comes with a wonderful DVD that documents the making of this album through interviews and original footage, plus a video showing a visit Sir George Martin made to Brian Wilson's home.

This album is a MUST-HAVE for music fans, and I totally agree with Sir Paul McCartney's views on this album (printed on the CD's booklet), expressing that "NOBODY IS TRULY MUSICALLY EDUCATED WITHOUT LISTENING TO PET SOUNDS"

5 out of 5 stars You can never have too much Pet Sounds.......2007-01-04

Pet Sounds is the ultimate aural experience. I enjoyed the 5.1 Surround mix. I sat in a chair, closed my eyes and drifted into a soundscape of textured notes and voices.

I already own the box set, the 1st CD edition and even an original vinyl copy. It seems that every time I upgrade I am never disappointed.

Purist seem to like the Mono version of the album. I love the all the sounds that scream out of the stereo version.

If you do not have the box set or the other stereo Cd, I would highly recommend this set. It covers everything Pet Sounds that you will want. If you do not care for the interviews and film, you will appreciate the surround mix on the DVD. The box set is more for Brian wilson Fanatics(Myself included) and collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a HIGH CLASS package for a high class album.......2006-11-11

Brian Wilson made a generation of kids look at love lost/love gained/love period, the way they never had before. It really wasn't an "age of innocence" back in 1966, but it was less complicated than what it would be like in the following decades, having to reconcile issues like E.R.A. amendments, growing tolerance/promotion of homosexuality, H.I.V./AIDS, and, ahem, the preponderance of man-made global warming. SHEESH! Back then we (I was a teenager in 1966) only had love and a war to deal with, beyond getting our school grades up for mom and dad (most of us had both, in the same house back then).

So, this work of art was literally outstanding in its field, and those of us who actually listened to it were challenged with our feelings, thoughts, and actions toward this thing that we called LOVE. It was an absolute shame that Capitol Records was spoiled by their cash cow producers (The Beatles and The Beach Boys) and only wanted more of the same stuff that paid their salaries, and yet couldn't see the "art" part even as it was smacking them in their corporate faces! This album, Pet Sounds, spawned a deeper penetration into mainstream pop music of artistically developed poetry and music. Now we were getting exposed to productions that challenged our senses: abstract forms like "MacArthur's Park", self-divulgences like "17" by Laura Nyro, and of course John Lennon's 2 great anthems "All You Need Is Love" & "Give Peace A Chance".

....all thanks to this work of angst...I mean, ART, by Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys - "Pet Sounds". And this package is a fine tribute to its existence...with a Bonus DVD too!

5 out of 5 stars What's better than Pet Sounds?.......2006-11-10

The essence of Brian Wilson. The full bodied sound to the ear not unlike fine wine is to the pallet. This great package gives you your choice of production, both mono and stereo and caters to all the diehard Beach Boys fans with a variety of things, including a DVD to enjoy. A must have for those who never experienced Pet Sounds at its fullest. After all, this is one of the most important albums of all time!

Released in 1966 to tepid sales (and hence causing no small amount of grumbling among the notoriously fractious band members), Brian Wilson's Rubber Soul-inspired album of "spiritual love" eventually became one of pop music's most celebrated artistic accomplishments. Paul McCartney would later claim that Pet Sounds in turn inspired the Beatles' magnum opus, Sgt. Pepper. This four-disc box set offers an unprecedented deconstruction of Wilson's masterpiece, taking fans, armchair scholars, and musicians on a compelling creative journey. Leading off with what once was heresy--a complete true-stereo mix of the album cleverly conjured from the existing session tapes by engineer and project coproducer Mark Linett--the set proceeds through edited audio collages that document the evolution of each song's backing track. Along the way, listeners are treated to a playful, unreleased gem ("Trombone Dixie") and the very genesis of Wilson's other great period masterpiece, "Good Vibrations." Conversely, disc 2 presents all the songs' glorious harmonies, sans instrumental backing tracks, then 19 more tracks that highlight alternate working versions (including the original take on "I Know There's an Answer," the pointedly titled "Hang On to Your Ego"), session snippets, and radio promotional spots. Disc 3 contains a newly remastered version of the album's original mono mix. The album's two comprehensive booklets were written and edited by coproducer and veteran Beach Boy biographer David Leaf and include commentary by Wilson and quotes from McCartney and producer George Martin. The 126-page "Making of Pet Sounds" pieces together the recollections of the band, session men, and engineers behind the epochal album into a warm, human-scaled history. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars GOD WAS SMILING ON BRIAN WILSON DURING THE PET SOUNDS SESSIONS....PET SOUNDS IS THE TCHIAKOVSKY OF ROCK MUSIC........... .......2007-01-21

An amazing journey into the creation of a musical masterpiece. Pet Sounds Sessions might be overkill to the casual Beach Boys or rock fan but it should be listened to by all music lovers. Pet Sounds Sessions lets you hear the construction of each of the Pet Sounds songs. All thirteen Pet Sounds songs are extensively examined and disected. The Beach Boys talk during the recording demos is a fantastic trip into the construction and start of the psychedelic 1960s. You hear the genius of Brian Wilson verbally and the harmonies of his fellow Beach Boys as well as the professionalism of record producer and writer Phil Spectors wrecking crew. Brian needed this wrecking crew (musicians) to make his vision and sound come out properly on Pet Sounds. I dont believe Brian really knew what the finished result of Pet Sounds would be during these recording sessions. That is how far ahead Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys were vocally and musically with Pet Sounds over any rock band of the time, yes including The Beatles. There are two booklets with this Sessions box set discussing in depth the Pet Sounds recording sessions. Disc one tracks 1-13 are the stereo mix of the complete Pet Sounds. The vocal sessions on disc three are an incredible listen and sound like a chorus of heavenly angels and will have you singing along with the included song lyrics. On the fourth cd you get to hear Pet Sounds as it was originally presented in 1966 with a new remastered 1996 mono mix). Here is how to listen to Pet Sounds Sessions: Start on cd-1 with track 14 (SLOOP JOHN B highlights) and listen all the way through to disc four to the Pet Sounds Mono Mix. After you listen to the this new mono mix you realize the greatness of Pet Sounds and how far ahead of its time it was and still is. The Beatles were so amazed and blown away with Pet Sounds and "Good Vibrations" that they tried to emulate the Pet Sounds sound in their 1966-1969 recordings. The Beatles 1966 Revolver' through their final recording 1969s "Abbey Road" were rock masterpieces but could never match the sound and creativity of "Pet Sounds" or Good Vibrations". "Pet Sounds" and "Good Vibrations" served as a blueprint for all Beatle recordings through 1966-1969. Beatles producer Sir George Martin has stated "if I had to pick one living musical genius it would be Brian Wilson". Sir George Martin has also stated that Sgt. Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds. Attempt??????? this came from Sir George Martin the producer of the worlds greatest musical band. Pet Sounds is definitly the Tchiakovsky of rock music...........

5 out of 5 stars Pet Sounds Is A Masterpiece, Brian Wilson Is A Genius.......2007-01-19

In 1965-66, I sang in my high school's "Select Choir." I've also sung in various quartets and played lead, rhythm, and bass guitar, and harmonica. So I know about music and harmony.

I always knew The Beach Boys were top notch vocalists. But when I listened to them on just the VOCAL tracks of this Pet Sounds box set, even I wasn't prepared for it...it blew me away! The instrumental tracks are also very beautiful and inspiring. If you get this box set, you should listen to the vocal and instrumental tracks SEPARATELY in a quiet place with no distractions or interruptions. And, of course, listen to the vocal & instrumental tracts TOGETHER (as the released version). You need to listen to them in the setting described above to be able to really (and fully) appreciate this musical masterpiece.

The only thing that could top this Pet Sounds box set is... if VIDEO had been taken of the guys singing their vocal parts along with the sound being recorded, too. To have such a video/audio DVD made available to the public would be absolutely AWESOME!

Paul McCartney was once asked by a Japanese radio station what his ten favorite songs were. At the top of his list was "God Only Knows." But I believe the words of George Martin, the PRODUCER of The Beatles, carry even greater weight. He said: "If there is one person that I have to select as a living genius of pop music, I would choose Brian Wilson...[Sargent] Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds." Notice that Martin used the word, "attempt." Think about it: this man was the producer of the records of the group that many still believe is "the world's greatest group"... yet, he says he would choose BRIAN WILSON if he had to name just "one" person as a "living genius of pop music."

Pet Sounds is a masterpiece, Brian Wilson is a genius...period.

4 out of 5 stars Inside Brian Wilson's Head circa '65-'66.......2007-01-10

I thought 4 CDs of Pet Sounds and its outtakes would be too much. I mean, I agree that Pet Sounds is a colossal album, a triumph of all times, but 4 CDs? Yes. It is worth it. If you're a big fan of the album itself, you'll enjoy hearing it dissected, hearing all the different parts and how they were put together. Then... You listen to the stereo mix of the final album (not released at the time) and you realize that the hype is warranted. Pet Sounds is THAT good.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven might sound like this............2005-09-24

Whether you are a die-hard Beach Boys fan, or just a fan of good music, this box-set belongs in your collection. The impact, although delayed somewhat in 1966, of "Pet Sounds" has been well documented over the years. And the recent reissue of the album makes clear that this music is coming from a special place. What the box-set does, is allows you to hear the process of the album's creation. Through alternate takes, and the "pieces" that Brian Wilson assembled into complete songs, you can hear how songs that are now classics were born. The box contains four discs...the first being a Brian Wilson supervised and approved stereo mix...the first ever, and "Sessions Part I. Disc two contains the pieces, backing tracks, Brian's instructions to the studio musician's (who are some of the best players on the planet..then and now) titled "Sessions Part 2. Disc three is perhaps the most moving for it contains just the vocal tracks of the album's songs, along with alternate versions of songs like "God Only Knows", and "Wouldn't It Be Nice". The box set also contains, in a separate slip cover replicating the original album sleeve, the original album...in mono of course.

Yes, it does help to have a strong curiosity about music and how songs are developed to get the most from this set...(disc two), but from the stereo mix, to the vocal tracks, to the alt. versions..this must be what Heaven might sound like.

5 out of 5 stars Hear the Beach Boys in action recording Pet Sounds!.......2005-07-28

To date, since the release of the album in 1966,The Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS is their biggest-selling non-compilation(BEST OF THE BEACH BOYS is the group's biggest-selling compilation). In this lavishly packaged box set, their fans will hear the group in action recording PS. You'll hear a dog barking next to other animal noises. Even Mike Love and the late Carl Wilson present broadcasts on various radio stations in America. You'll hear engineers manning the control panels and soundboards and speaking. You'll hear some broken takes,a cappella(voices only) versions of the songs and music alone. And finally, the master versions(those on the original album). CAROLINE NO was raised one key in the master version. The other versions sound like the live recording from THE BEACH BOYS IN CONCERT,released in 1973. PS hits include WOULDN'T IT BE NICE,GOD ONLY KNOWS and SLOOP JOHN B. I also like YOU STILL BELIEVE IN ME. In 2002,Brian Wilson did a series of concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall, performing all the PS songs by himself with a back-up band,of course(none of which were the surviving Beach Boys). Brian put out an album of those concerts. I dedicate this item to the memories of Carl and his' and Brian's brother Dennis.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT NEW MASTERING and new version of EGO.......2007-05-13

Please see producer Mark Linett's review under the deluxe "fuzzy" version of this new CD/DVD. The mono version of the album has been remastered from a superior source to that used in 2000, and a more complete version of "Hang On To Your Ego" has been used.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best.......2007-04-10

I collect Beach Boys & this is just another example of the best album The Beach Boys ever put to wax. After they released the CD the first time it contained the mono/stereo versions (which I prefer the mono) with a bonus track. Then a box set devoted to the album. Now they release it like the single CD but, with a DVD to further cement this album as one of the best ever released. I highly recommend this one if your looking to check out what the fuss is all about. Search "Judemac Forever" on msn.

5 out of 5 stars ON 5/16/66 PET SOUNDS STARTED THE PSYCHEDELIC 1960S....THE BEACH BOYS MASTERPIECE, GOD ONLY KNOWS........................2007-01-06

The Beach Boys experimented with this new form of Psychcedelic sound on thier two 1965 lps (The Beach Boys "Today" and "Summer Days and Summer Nights". With these two 1965 lps Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys were trying to create a new sound that at the time no other rock group had ever created. In December 1965 after Brian Wilson had just heard the Beatles "Rubbersoul", a statement album from the fab four, implying that the whole album should be counted as the hit, not just a single or two off the album and the rest just filler. Brian would say "I want to make a record just like that, but I want to make it better!" Brians competitive fires were stoked to compete with the Beatles. And what Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys created blew the Beatles right out of the water and rest was history. In fact the Beach Boys were so worried about Pet Sounds being accepted by Capital records they were prepared to be told to "go back to the studio and make a friendly top forty record but defenintly please nothing like Pet Sounds". Capital Records were not so sure how the public would accept this new sound. An incredible early psychedelic recording released May 16,1966 which influenced the Beatles 1967 Sgt.Pepper so much that George Martin has stated "if it were'nt for Pet Sounds Sgt. Pepper would not have been created". Pretty strong words from Sir George who helped produce the worlds greatest rock bands music. Believe me when the Beatles heard Pet Sounds their jaws dropped with envy and anger. 1966 was a very musically transitional year for both the Beatles and the Beach Boys. At this time on Aug.5th 1966 the Beatles released their counter shot to Pet Sounds with their masterpiece "Revolver". Many rockologists and Beatle fans alike consider Revolver to be a better recording than Sgt.Pepper, of course it will always be debatable and an ongoing endless conversation. The Beach Boys were to add an exclamation point to Pet Sounds in october 1966 as the Beach Boys unleashed their pschyedelic masterpiece "Good Vibrations" just a few months before the Beatles started their Sgt. Pepper recording sessions. The Beatles were enjoying success with Revolver and captured some of the new pschyedelic sound with Revolvers release. Even with the success of Revolver, the release of Good Vibrations defined more of the psychedelic sound in rock music in the fall of 1966 than Revolver did and really got the Beatles crazy with envy, and created a real urgency for the Beatles to get back to Abbey Road studios to outdue their well armed rivals. The Beach Boys never approached the success of the Beatles due partly if not all to Brian Wilsons bad habits of over indulgance, but Pet Sounds really made the psychedelic era sound and influenced the Beatles Sgt Pepper. As the song says God only knows what the Beach boys could have done post Pet Sounds, if it were'nt for Brians over indulgance in bad habits, will never know. Pet sounds was recorded while Brian had these bad habits but that is what helped Pet Sounds sound unique, Brian let these bad habits get the better of him post Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds was not a commercial success when released, but clearly got the attention of many music artist including classical composer Leonard Bernstien, as their minds were just blown away by it. I listen to both Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds and there is some really eerie simularities, besides the instrumentation between the two, on Pet Sounds after "Caroline No" the last song on the recording you hear a trolly and a dog barking and than a train with its horn going off and a dog barking while and after the train passes. On Sgt. Pepper you hear barn animals, possibly Pet Sounds influenced and on Magical Mystery Tour you hear a train with its horn just before going into Pennylane. Pink Floyd would use animals sounds in their 1970s work, 1970 "Atom Heart Mother" including a cow on the cover of the lp. Pink Floyd in 1976 released an album called Animals and even used giant inflatable pigs on their Animals tour stage show, I wonder if Pet Sounds had anything to due with that? Pet sounds caused the Beatles to disappear into Abbey Road for 6-8 months to make Sgt. Pepper. To make Sgt. Pepper better than Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations. Because of this Sgt. Pepper is the yardstick to measure every rock recording from past, present and future. The Beatles also had the greatest record producer of all time on their side Sir George Martin. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Sir George Martin vs. Brian Wilson. Brian Wilson was on his own and had no real help, even though the remaining Beach Boys had some creative, musical skills. The one thing I will give the Beach Boys over the Beatles is that they had better technology in the recording studio than the Beatles at Abbey Road. I respect the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson (Tony Asher) as a song writer and music creator. In my opinion the Beach Boys Pet Sounds set up the pschycodelic era, a really important era in rock history that even the Beatles and most every other rock band during the psychedelic era copied Pet Sounds in some form. I like having both versions of Pet Sounds, Mono so you could hear how it sounded in 1966 and stereo because you could hear different instruments that you cant hear in mono. I like the stereo version better because I am just used to stereo recordings, but I still like to listen to the mono version and go back to 1966. The 5.1 stereo sound is mind boggeling and must be heard on your theatre system, you will not beleive Pet Sounds could sound this incredible. Every song on Pet Sounds is a an early psychedelic journey into the start of the most important era in rock history. Pet Sounds started the most Important era in rock history the Psychedelic Era. I recommend Pet Sounds to any music lover this recording truly set the standard as definetly one of the greatest most influential rock recordings ever created. This cd mono and stereo sounds pristine and brilliantly remastered. The miniature booklet supplied with this 40th anniversary edition cd is extremely informative and the dvd is an incredible look into this historical facinating recording. Pet Sounds is a very influential and timeless recording. Pet Sounds is the blueprint for the entire psychodelic 1960s, early 1970s, which the Beatles and many rock groups of the time used the Pet Sounds blueprint to mold and create their own music during this time. If you the reader wish to get more into Pet Sounds you should look into purchasing The Pet Sounds Sessions. You will with this four cd box set see how genius Brian Wilson constructs his 1966 masterpiece. If Pet sounds Sessions is to overkill you will be making the right choice just sticking to this fortieth anniversary edition release.............................

5 out of 5 stars It is so true, Pet Sounds IS one of the BEST albums of all time..........2006-09-27

I have never heard this whole album before, just various songs from it on different compilation CD's and what not. I picked up this new 40th Anniversary edition tonight. I just now finished listening to it, and words cannot describe the beauty of this album. The harmony's and instrumentals are simply off the charts and out of this world. Not just one song or several songs, but this whole album; it is simply a masterpiece. And the stereo versions of the tracks are simply mind blowing. Mr. Paul McCartney of the Beatles was right on the money, God Only Knows was the best song ever written and that Pet Sounds IS the album of all time. Go pick up this copy if you have not already.

5 out of 5 stars I'm really not into greatest hits albums, but this is a good deal!.......2006-07-10

I own all the Beach Boys CD's prior to Pet Sounds plus Pet Sounds. I've listened to most of the "Brother Years" CDs, and I can say that sometimes I still like to crank up nothing but the big hits. This is an excellent "greatest hits" CD because with the exception of Sail On Sailer, which it amazingly does not include, it has all the "Brother Years" hits on it, including my favorite of that era "I Can Hear Music".

And, the DVD is a huge bonus. What a piece of history.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it for the DVD alone! ALL 4 SONGS FROM THE TAMI SHOW!.......2004-08-24

The CD is another rehashed collection of Beach Boys hits, with a few uncommon tracks. If they had dumped Come Go With Me and Rock & roll music and added Sail On Sailor and Surf's Up, this would have been a near perfect collection. The DVD (only 10 tracks, not 20 as listed above) has ALL 4 SONGS FROM THE 1964 TAMI SHOW! It also has songs from the "Lost Concert" some Pet sounds promos, Ed Sullivan songs and a couple more. If they had added a few more promo videos, like the early tv appearances singing "Surfin" and "Surfin' Safari" with David Marks (pre Al Jardine) this would have been a 5 star set!

5 out of 5 stars Even with its flaws, a classic..........2004-06-30

First the bonuses... it's a decent overview that you not only get to hear but see the band as well. Considering how many repackages that have been done, I'd recommend this one out of them all. It's a great intro for a new generation to listen to, the ones that bought the Beatles and Elvis 1's. I like it better than both of the documentaries, and wish they would put out a full-length DVD of all their great songs and some of the promo videos they did in the 80s. Even the one they did with the Fat Boys. But I do feel that you get your money's worth with this collection.

The drawbacks are the songs that are missing, which would amount to a whole other CD. Maybe a "rock" CD and a "roll" CD... As a companion (even though there are songs on both) I'd recommend "Beach Boys Classics", a set handpicked by Brian that serves as a great companion to this one, or just get the "Good Vibrations" box set which covers a lot of territory. And "Pet Sounds" should have been in your collection anyway.

4 out of 5 stars This collection is "Fun, Fun, Fun"........2004-06-22

Well if "Elvis" and "The Beatles" can do it, "The Beach Boys" deserve a 30 track hits disc too. Even with this many songs, it still misses a few favorites, but it's hard to complain when you get "California Girls", "Surfin' U.S.A.", "God Only Knows" and "Kokomo" on the same disc, plus 26 others. It's amazing how many great songs they had, especially considering that half of them aren't on here. But to make up for the missing, this includes a DVD of numerous TV show appearances and film clips, hence the title "Sights AND Sounds Of Summer". Overall I'd say this will please any level of fan, and should give you "Good Vibrations".

Amazon.com essential recording

Only a small commercial success upon its original release in 1966, Brian Wilson's "teenage symphony to God" has grown in stature over the years, even spawning an exhaustive box set chronicling the sessions. To hear it is to understand why; Wilson and his contingent of fellow Beach Boys, guest lyricists, and session musicians expanded upon the lushness of LPs like The Beach Boys Today and Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) to create a song cycle celebrating--and tracking the downhill course of--a young man's romance. There are few lonelier sounds in pop than the last notes of the final song, "Caroline, No," fading into the sound of a distant train, Wilson's dog barking as it passes. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Steve Hoffman Mastering.......2007-06-23

One of the key selling points of this edition is the fact that it was mastered by audiophile Steve Hoffman. And it's not mentioned anywhere. If you want to know just how good a 60's recording can sound, get this. There is no compression or clipping from the loudness race here. In fact, Hoffman said that the final dump for cd was virtually identical to what was on the Master tapes. Truly an outstanding job by an outstanding masterer.

2 out of 5 stars Poot Sounds.......2007-02-23

One of THE most overrated albums of all times.

Brian Wilson's whining and complaining about his teenaged angst (while he was in his 20's) has always been annoying. The orchestrations are repetitively lugubrious, and songs like "Sloop John B" are so out of place on this exercise in depressive rock.

If REVOLVER was really a response to PET SOUNDS, well, at least some good came of it.

5 out of 5 stars Pet Sounds.......2003-01-27

Paul McCartney said that The Beach Boys album, Pet Sounds, is the greatest pop album ever written. It was his inspiration for Sgt. Pepper. Enough said......

5 out of 5 stars The Magnum Opus of Beach Boy material.......2002-04-15

Any serious music lover realizes this is a crucial collection of material to have. Wilson is at his creative best in this album. Just as we can say Sgt Pepper is a creative watershed for the Beattles, this is true for the Beach Boys.. The harmonies are equisite. The music without the lyrics have patterns reminnisent of clssical composers.

5 out of 5 stars Words cannot express how good this album is.......2001-10-17

This album is phenomenal. This is the Beach Boys' best album. I like everything the Beach Boys have done, and this is the best. I must say that I am much more into the Beach Boys than the Beatles. Some of my favorite tracks are "I Know There's An Answer," "Here Today," and "God Only Knows." I also love "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "You Still Believe In Me," "Pet Sounds," "That's Not Me," "Don't Talk," "I'm Waiting for the Day," "Caroline, No," "Sloop John B," "Let's Go Away for a While," and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times." Wait, that's every track on the album. Paul McCartney said, "It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water. I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life ..." Elton John called it a landmark album. If you don't get this album, you're insane! It's not the surfin' tunes that you think the Beach Boys produce. Check it out. Actually, I think this album is UNDER-hyped. It wasn't appreciated at its release, and most people still think that the Beach Boys only write surfing music and that all of their songs are the same. The fact is, the beach boys only wrote surfing songs for about 5 years out of the 30 years that they released records. And for those who don't like the cover, I think it's pretty darn funny to see these guys at a petting zoo. I think it's one of the best covers I've ever seen.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Season.......2005-11-19

I purchased this years ago and the enjoyment has grown every Christmas. Handel's Messiah is beautiful, The Nutcracker is a classic and the arrangement of hymns conveys the true wonders of the season. While there is a place for pop carols, these classics should be in every Christian's music library. I loved this so much, I actually purchased a complete replacement set when I lost one of the discs. Certainly an excellent value that any music lover would treasure.

4 out of 5 stars FOR WHISTLING OR SINGING ALONG.......2003-12-28

The gifted Richard Hayman (Boston Pops arranger for more than 30 years) offers an interesting collection of holiday favourites. The back cover says "Orchestra and Chorus" - beware, there is no chorus. The sub-title "Philharmomic Symphony Orchestra" is rather pedantic. Why not simply "Richard Hayman and His Orchestra"? The opening and closing numbers are sing-along medleys... the liner notes offer the words. Two Leroy Anderson numbers receive a fair treatment: SLEIGH RIDE and SONG OF THE BELLS, the latter being played rrather slowly. There is a beautiful rendition of MUSIC BOX DANCER, the only version I know that uses the music box. The counter-melody is too loud and takes away the charm of the main theme. A few compositions by the conductor himself. A great collection for tree-trimming, whistling or singing along.
