A brilliant album, especially track number 1,6,7. I gave it it 4 stars because of the last two tracks of Schoenberg which I did not like. They were to "abstract", not melodious at all. I realize this is subjective, maybe you will love it!

Yehudi Menuhin and Glenn Gould made an efective team, in spite of their well differenced approach respect many musical considerations.

Menuhin was the romantic spirit, Gould the iconoclast msucian; but something magic happened when both of them shook hands and exchanged ideas and opinions. It was a secret but visible reciprocal admiration that allowed them to work out to perfection levels.

Menuhin 's gentle warmth was an overwhelming player and Gould gave us the best of his talent in an historiacl album that deserves to be part of your privileged collection.

Gould and Menuhin really do play well together: the Bach and the Beethoven are great; the Schoenberg fanstastic! Gould literally taught Menuhin during a day's rehearsal how to play the Schoenberg--into whose works he [Gould] had a special insight. After a night of "sleeping on it," the following day Menuhin really played the piece with love and understanding.

Gould and Menuhin are a great combination! I especially like the Bach Sonata. I love how Menuhin does a trill on the violin. Glenn Gould does very well being in a duet. This is my first Glenn Gould CD which is not for solo piano. The Schoenberg Phantasy on this CD is an exceptional work of genius. Do not be afraid of the Schoenberg composition. The cheerful Beethoven violin sonata is played very elegantly when it needs to be and heavy and strong at the right time. The sound on this is great! (The recording does not have any added noises) A wonderful CD for anyone!

It would be hard to believe that there is music out there that is capable of containing the enormous artistic gifts of Gould and Menuhin. The Bach and the Schoenberg (which Menuhin only agreed to play because of his reverence for Gould) are examples of such music. The recording of these two works is spellbinding, particularly the Bach which is very forward and driven. The Beethoven is by comparison a bit of a let-down though it certainly remains worth hearing. It is a pity that these two great figures were not more frequent collaborators.

Although most of this set is devoted to major cello concertos (Elgar, Saint-Saëns, Dvorák, Schumann, Haydn) that Du Pré played so well, perhaps the most treasurable recording is one of two Beethoven cello sonatas with the pianist Stephen Bishop (Kovacevich). Recorded very early in her career, these show Du Pré at her most eloquent, the early promise of a great career so cruelly interrupted. This set includes most of the cellist's best recordings. Too bad it's not 10 times the size. If the cellist's passion occasionally seems excessive, at least it's the right kind of flaw to have. --Leslie Gerber

Although Jackie du Pre's playing in the Elgar, Delius and Schoenberg concerti was superb, I for one simply find nothing to admire in that music. Perhaps this is my fault, perhaps not, but in general there are so many superb recordings of the Haydn and Dvorak concerti that only the sentiments surrounding her decline into MS and early death recommend them.

On the other hand, the recordings of the Chopin, Beethoven and other sonatas in the second 3 discs of this set are among the most moving recordings ever made. Jackie never had quite the golden tone or perfect technique of Feuermann or Yo-Yo Ma, and this shows itself more in the Bach unaccompanied cello suites where she plays a few scratchy-sounding turns, but the deep-down love and emotional commitment of her playing always communicated itself effectively. In short, then, I recommend this set for the sonatas & suites, but if you also enjoy these concerto recordings, you will love it all.

this is a wonderful recording of some of the best cello music played by one of the worlds best cello players, the late jacqueline du pre. jackie had magic in her fingertips and listening to these recordings is pure joy, one of the best set I had the chance to hear.

The collection dosen't have Brahms's Cello Sonatas. But you picture her portrait by these 6 CDs( The cost is 7 dollars or less per one CD ). If you don't know what kind of cellist she was--yet, I want you to get it.

You would meet extraordinary emitted passion by Du Pre in Elgar( needlees to say, it is one of her most famous performance), Saint-Saens, Dovrak( in spite of unskillful conducting of Barenboim), Schumann. The set has not only her famous performance of the Concertos in disk 1-3, but also various Sonatas( Barenboim makes excellent piano playing in good harmony with his wife more than support) in disk 4-6.

Furthermore, the Bach's Cello Suite No.1 and No.2, as her only solo performance in this collection, are very interesting. Its passionate Bach(!!) is certainly like Du Pre.

This collection, composed of the great works for the cello, is a must have in any serious classical music fan's library. It is an even better collection for the "newbie" to the genre. Jacqueline du Pre was undoubtedly one of the greatest artist of the century and her passion is well documented in this collection. Just get it...if you like classical music...you'll like this collection and the price is great too. What's to lose?

This is definitely worth getting, and Amazon's price is right. Du Pre was one of the greatest ever (Yo-Yo Ma now owns her cello, in case any of you play Classical Music Trivial Pursuit), and I cry inwardly when I think of her early death. The Elgar Concerto alone on this set is enough to justify the purchase price. After she died, several "name" conductors vowed they would never perform or record it again with anybody, so strong was their memory of her. So why only four stars here? Two reasons: some of these performances are with hubby Daniel Barenboim conducting, and they just aren't quite in the same league as the other efforts. Just compare the Barbirolli Haydn and the Barenboim Haydn to see what I mean: both are slow-tempoed, and neither would be my top-drawer choice. But Barbirolli *almost* makes it work, and has a certain perverse logic, whereas DB is just dull and colorless and square. The second defect is the remastered sound, which oftentimes is not very good. Sure these are "historic" recordings, but they're not that old, most are stereo. Still, the sound is flat and clipped at the high end. This should not dissade anyone from getting this set, however. Just don't expect a sonic demo disc. You will get thrilling cello playing across a broad selection of repertoire.

This 2 cd set consists of, as the title indicates, various 20c pieces or movements from the Naxos catalog. Sound quality is uniformly high, although for some such as Stockhausen's it's not clear if that's good or bad. What is excellent is the variety of the collection--some familiar (Debussy), others not, some pretty, others intentionally weird. Few will find every piece to his or her taste, but many listeners who do not spend much time on 20c music will find something to like. Overall, a great introduction to a period of much off-putting, yes, but also much compelling music.

      I wanted to like this, I really did. But I find these interpretations good overall but never relevatory, and the sound is rather bad, even for someone like me who is very tolerant of inferior sonics in historical recordings. The product description may speak of the "Concertgebouw's fabled warmth and richness," but I don't hear it come through here. There are better ways to hear van Beinum and this great orchestra, which believe me from personal experience, is truly one of the world's very best.

      The Debussy is good (it's hard to go wrong with La Mer), but there are better interpretations in far better sound--Boulez, Bernstein, Karajan, Haitink (with the same orchestra). Francescatti does adequately in the Beethoven concerto, but it's far from a masterpiece interpretation. (If I'm going to put up with one recording's inferior sound in the Beethoven concerto it's going to be Menuhin/Furtwangler live 1948 on Music & Arts.) Menuhin is fine in Mozart's 4th concerto and Lupatti is perhaps the best soloist in the bunch in the Bach, and these are the two performances that bring me closest to recommending this set. But you can get both in better-sounding studio recordings--without van Beinnum it's true, but here you can barely hear the subtle finesses he imparts on his orchestra.

      And subtle finesses is what he is all about. He's a conductor I greatly respect and feel hasn't gotten his due in much of the world, and that's why I ordered this set. But these recordings are generally in such bad shape that it's better to seek out van B's studio work--you'll be able to *hear* what he's doing better, instead of just being told here you're hearing it. The accompanying booklet and notes are excellent, and the packaging, as usual for Andante, is first-rate. Too bad the rest of the set isn't up to those high standards. It pains me not to be able recommend a commendable set of rare material from an underrated conductor on an indy label trying so hard to do an outstanding job, but I can't.

        I remember the 1960's when I was trying so hard to get hold of any vinyl with Bax's name on it. From the late Henry Stave record shop in Great Marlborough Street near Oxford Circus, I would rush home clutching my precious new purchase that might contain only 10 minutes of pure Bax on some compliation record with other English composers! Those days are happily long behind us and we can now even get a little blase with such a rich selection available and this CD is testimony to the fact that the Baxian 'biggies' are all done and the recording companies are now moving down the list to some of his lesser works. Bax turned to the more formal concerto form after his initial creative flame had burnt itself out during the 1930's. It is obvious to the true Baxophile that this inspirational spring had dried up when you compare two works like Tintagel and the Golden Eagle, the latter work being on this CD. The melodic line and orchestration are still there but the THRILL, the pure magic just seems to have totally evaporated from his work. Bax sounds superficially the same as before, the fingerprints are all there, but that edge, that Bax mystery 'Macguffin' which varied from work to work is now gone. Think of the opening violin sheen and the ostinato rhythmical sea of the opening of 'Tintagel' or the fairy celesta runs casting little spells in 'the 'Garden of Fand'. These were little touches that reveal an inspiration so powerful that its composer appeared to others as 'other-worldly'. The Bax of this CD has passed all this by now and the Violin Concerto, although rich in melody and romanticism, seems to lack those deft touches that Bax was aware had slipped away. He bemoans this fact in his autobiography written at about this time, 'Farewell, My Youth'. Bax attempted to salvage something from his diminishing powers by looking to the music of Sibelius and the bleak north for a fresh source of inspiration. Therefore during this time Bax produced a genre of 'Sturm und Drang' works which can be exemplified by much of his 6th Symphony, the piano and orchestra work, 'Winter Legends', 'The Tale the Pine Trees Knew' and represented as a genre by 'A Legend' on this CD. This terse music was successful in the sense that Bax was able to recapture some sense of drama which had gone out of his work lately and therefore was able to make something that sounded compelling. Bax had ventured into this territory years before in his tone poem 'November Woods' but in this earlier work he kept some warmth and lyricism in the middle section. However, in his later 'Nordic' works it is now all dark skies and searing tension, like giant winged things in the gray skies tearing one another apart. Whilst this is impressive it does not invoke love or rapture in me like his earlier music always does. Those slow interludes when Bax spun a beautiful tune are still there like the two early aforementioned tone poems but are now lacking the conviction they once had. 'The Golden Eagle', incidental music to a stage work written by his brother Clifford, is a collection of small Preludes that are typical late Bax, well crafted but lacking his youthful greatness. The Romantic Overture is a 1926 work for piano and orchestra dedicated to Delius written at the request of Phillip Heseltine (Peter Warlock). For me this is the best work on the CD with a lovely catchy tune at the very end. Bax stated that he had retired 'like a grocer'. I believe he had worked out that he had said everything he had wanted to say a long time before but was now caught up with his reactive official status as 'Master of the King's Musick' and of other demands which he felt obliged to look after. I am still happy to have these works but to my mind they are not worth anyone other than a true Baxian investing in. Therefore they lose a star to differentiate them from the great Bax. Beautifully played and well recorded, though and over 75 minutes of music.
