Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Poor Sound, Incandescent Performances.......2003-08-27

Adolf Busch was one of the very greatest chamber musicians of the 20th century, known for his intelligent and deeply felt interpretations of the classic German repertoire, particularly Brahms and Beethoven.

The sound is what you might expect from a live 1949 recording: murky and compressed, with a lot of surface noise. But the playing is incandescent. I have never heard a more beautiful and compelling performance of the Brahms sextet. If you are some kind of audiophile maniac, then you will want a more modern recording; but if you are a real music lover, this is the sextet recording to listen to and treasure.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding performances.......2003-08-09

the sound of this cd is poor (but not unbearable), the quality of playing is outstanding. These are interpretations of unsurpassed beauty, unmatched by any modern ( and old) recording. It is sufficient to listen to the forward momentum mantained by the players in the 2nd movement (andante, ma moderato) of the difficult Brahms sextet to be aware of listening to something magical, an unique musical experience.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful.......2001-09-24

Be careful in purchasing this CD. The recording quality reflects the fact that these performances were recorded in 1949. We have become spoiled by modern technology, and we do not expect to hear static and other sound blemishes that were unavoidable then. Evidently the producers of this CD were unable, or chose not to, eliminate these technical faults. If you want to hear these particular artists in their original performances, this CD will seem very authentic, but if you want to hear recording quality that meets today's standards, this CD is not for you.
