Editorial Reviews
August 2000
"Russell Peterson's radiant lyricism shines throughout this performance of "Mahler in Blue Light." -Larry Thomas Bell
David Maslanka; September 2000
"Russ, I think that you are an amazing player, and the performance of my 'Sonata for Alto Saxophone' is wonderful."
Album Description
Russell Peterson, an internationally recognized saxophonist who won the top award at the (1995) International Saxophone Concours in Geneva, Switzerland, has made a bold recording of American music featuring the alto saxophone. He notes, "The music on this album represents a distinctively American aesthetic in contemporary music--at once sophisticated and bold, drawing on classical tradition yet embracing modern mainstream culture. It is my pleasure and my passion to give this singularly vital music voice and breath." From Maslanka's sonata, masterpiece of saxophone repertoire, to the dazzling interplay of saxophone, cello and piano in Bell's "Mahler in Blue Light" to Peterson's own spectacular Concerto for Saxophone and Percussion Orchestra (featuring more than twenty percussionists), this album is an exciting breath of fresh air in the world of classical saxophone recordings. Russell Peterson also has quartet recordings released on Albany Classical (with the Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet) and Sea-Breeze Jazz Records (Hard-Bop Saxophone Quartet).

Album Description
Lawrence Santiago's Axl Rose (Guns `n' Roses) meets Peter Garrett (Midnight Oil) vocals is a match made in heaven for the hard driving rockin' sound of the band he fronts, American Popular. "Sold Out (The American Way") is a knock-yer-socks off kick ass album with no bullshit allowed. Besides, who has the time for that when you can play as good as these guys do? Nothing new going on here, it is just straight ahead hard rock music minus all the extra polish and glitter that often is added to some records to enhance their sound and cover up what a group really sounds like. Their approach is obviously to get in the studio, play their asses off, record the tracks, then let people listen. It works very well for them. The are like the spontaneous combustion that happens inside an engine, the only difference is there is not a muffler to silence the noise nor anything to keep the flames from coming out.
Santiago's voice is very flexible for a hard rock singer, he can scream, set a softer pace, or maintain an immense energy level with seemingly no effort. The music must carry him to that lofty level of vocal prowess. The variety of metal played is exciting
rock, hard rock, metal, and all of the above come into the equation offering a variety of listener's different decibel levels. For those that like their music hard, fast and loud or a mish mash of all levels of intensity, it is here on this CD. They never loose their hard-core edge and their sound is comparable to what a live in the studio recording would be.
"My Therapy" was my favorite, no surprise there, because I need therapy on a regular basis, musical that is. In truth, all the songs were great! If you need to blow the roof off your house or your noggin, this will do the trick. In a world full of sell outs that give up their beliefs and original sound just to make it in the music biz, American Popular do it their own way, the American independent music way." musicdish.com

Jerome Kitzke's works go wildly beyond definition, partaking of rhythmic tumult and pouncing reeds, not to mention the vocalists who shout jubilantly and chant darkly. Part musical theater, Kitzke's oeuvre is full of theatricality, as on Keening Wish, the Allen Ginsberg-scripted text of which is recited, morphed, and ricocheted through percussion and bass clarinet, building toward Lisa Karrer's floating vocalizations and the full ensemble's mirroring of the voice. Then The Animist Child jumps into a virtuosic mix of foot-stomping and toy piano that sound like a rootsy take on John Cage's chance composition. It's on The Big Gesture that Kitzke's full breadth of know-how comes to light. Tumbling drummed percussion gets twill-like weave treatment with Michael Lowenstern's bass clarinet and Jacqueline Leclair's oboe. Kitzke has several political commentaries wrapped in these pieces, but all are served well by spotless execution on works that could easily hide even intentional spots in their ecumenical embrace of so many genres. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:
Can't miss this recording!.......2005-09-23
When one thinks of the saxophone in a classical sense, there are many assumptions that people may make about the genre. One, the saxophone is incapable of playing anything to the level of the established "classical instruments" i.e. violin, cello, flute, etc, and also that classical playing in general means that the music is being performed for the sheer technical aspects of the music. Russ Peterson disproves both of these ideas with this amazing and enlightening recording.
The first piece, Sonata by David Maslanka, is an amazing piece any way that it is viewed. From a technical aspect, it is one the hardest pieces in the saxophone repertoire. Listening to Mr. Peterson play it though, the entire piece seems effortless. The most intriguing aspect to the Maslanka sonata, however, is the emotional impact that Peterson seems to channel from it. His interpetation of the second movement is extremely powerful in an emotional as well as in a musical sense. Mr. Peterson seems to personally identify with the music, and that comes through in his interpetation. I have listened to countless other saxophonists such as Mule, Londiex, Delangle, Sugawa, etc, and while all brilliant in their own respects none have come close to the emotional impact that Mr. Petersons playing transmits.
The other pieces, the Bell and the concerto that Peterson himself composed, are great pieces of music in themselves. However, the Maslanka is the real treasure in this recording. Do yourself a favor and find any recordings you can of Russell Peterson. Start with this CD, you will not be dissapointed. Highly recommended!
