If you play classical guitar buy the Jeffery's complete works of Sor. And then buy all of the naxos Sor titles you can. You will not want for Good listening and challenging music.

Already in the knowledge that I have so much music on disc or on grammophone, I was surprised by this collection of Sors etudes and Aguado. It is wonder full performed by Kraft and it stimulates looking in my own collection and playing Sors work. A big trouvaille!

In his own words, he wanted to contribute "toward a Latin symphonism and to react against the predominant tendency of the generation that preceded me to reject monumentalism in music". One of Braga Santos' last works, the Cello Concerto is more of a symphonic poem, in which the cellist appears as soloist from time to time, than a traditional concerto. The luminous, extrovert Divertimento No. 1 is one of the composer's few works based on Portuguese musical folklore while, by way of sharp contrast, the Divertimento No. 2 is a haunting, often dissonant work which utterly belies its title.

Joly Braga Santos (1924-1988) is clearly the most important Portuguese composer of the past century, perhaps of any century, and music lovers the world over have been discovering him apace since Marco Polo began this series of recordings of his orchestral music several years ago, all under the direction of Portuguese conductor (and Braga Santos acolyte) Álvaro Cossuto. This disc features Cossuto's fine orchestra, the Algarve Orchestra from the Portuguese region of that name.

Braga Santos had two very distinct styles. Up until Symphony No. 4 (roughly up to 1960) he composed music that was lushly romantic, with some elements of central European post-Romanticism thrown in. After that his style changed radically to a dissonant and at times atonal one. This CD contains works from both periods. I openly identify myself with the admirers of the earlier style and have written an earlier laudatory review of the recording of his Second Symphony. I had not, till now, heard any of his later music. I must admit that now that I have, I have little desire to hear any of it again. On this CD the breakdown is this:

Early romantic style:
Nocturno for strings (1944)
Divertimento No. 1 (1959-1961)
Staccato Brilhante (1988, but similar to the earlier style)

Later dissonant style:
Divertimento No. 2 for strings (1978)
Concerto for Cello and Orchestra (1987)

I quickly fell in love with the first three pieces mentioned. It must be pointed out that the Staccato Brilhante, although written in 1988, was written on commission from the present conductor, Álvaro Cossuto, who had asked for a short piece that could be used as an overture or encore. Cossuto clearly loves Braga Santos's earlier style and has indeed written about the toughness of the later style, almost as if to warn people about it. I suspect he asked the composer for something a little less fearsome. It is a moto perpetuo in one movement and is an exciting, energetic, brilliantly orchestrated gem. Nocturno, seven minutes long, was written when Braga Santos was only twenty and begins with divisi low strings supporting a viola solo of ethereal beauty. The piece develops but maintains a somber long melodic arc introduced in the opening measures. A haunting and memorable piece. The 20-minute-long Divertimento No. 1 is in three movements. It was written for Braga Santos's composition teacher, Virgilio Mortari, and is based on some Portuguese folk materials. The orchestration is expert, particularly in the second movement, Intermezzo, which functions as the scherzo of the piece. The Finale features a catchy 5/8 melody that is followed by a development section that eventually leads to a recapitulation that recalls the opening of the first movement.

The 13-minute-long two-movement Divertimento No. 2 is for strings and although it has some striking ideas and is nicely crafted, it is far too dissonant and vaguely rhapsodic for my taste. So, although I can admire the craft, I cannot, after much listening, bring myself to care much about it. As for the Cello Concerto, written not long before Braga Santos's death, the less said the better. It strikes me as a bitter and disillusioned piece, probably appropriate considering Braga Santos's lack of recognition in his lifetime. But it is also not attractive in any significant way. It is vague, unfocused, meandering, and ultimately boring. That said, one can admire the conviction of the soloist, cellist Jan Bastiaan Neven, who was the principal cellist of the Algarve Orchestra at the time of this recording.

The bottom-line: It is a tossup as to whether one would want to buy this CD. I do indeed like the three earlier pieces, and they constitute roughly half the playing time here. There will be some of you who will not react as I did to the later pieces; they may be more your meat.

    - especially the Walzt-Gavottte is playfull and summes of live and fun - a bit Childrens Corner here. But some of the pieces are very etniclike and can be foreign to listen to. Though - it sounds interesting.

      Album Description

      The idea of amassing a large collection of occasional music by Mozart would appear at first to be a luxury to any but the most fanatic of record collectors. But for those who know it well, this music is full of profound poetry. Its beauty emerges more and more with repeated listening and shows that the genius that created the symphonies, concerti, and operas could produce masterpieces for informal settings as well. The first series of concerts by the New York Philomusica Chamber Ensemble was held in New York City's Town Hall in September, 1971. On the second program of the series, the great Divertimento No. 17 in D and its companion March were heard, soon thereafter recorded. Thus began a 3-year project to record all of the Breitkopf & Härtel edition of the "Complete Divertimentos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart." No organization had sought to mount such an ambitious effort previously, nor has any since. The first completed recordings were issued in 1975 as "Vox Boxes," in LP format. In 1991 they were issued again, on CD. This edition is 2002. In each edition, the liner notes by Robert Levin have been updated to the latest standards of scholarship.

      The great string divertimentos in this survey call forth from the violinists the most demanding range of musicality and instrumental skill. Peter Davis, reviewing the 1975 LPs for The New York Times noted "...a special pleasure in hearing the poised, lark-like flights of the two principal violinists, Isidore Cohen and Felix Galimir." That independent view is an apt expression of the gift so crucial to these performances' musical success.

      I am a bassoonist. I was always hoping to either have or record
      all of the best of my hero's classic works. Especially his divertimentos, which are rare and difficult to find. An now
      celebrating Wolfgang's 250th, I was so astonished that I rushed
      to find an American Express card to own my very own complete collection; to hear over and over and enjoy. I even might just pull out the old Fox bassoon and try to play along with some of them.

      It is amazing how keenly Mozart intuited what we would need at those times when the world is a bit too much with us. And here we have six discs of his unique balm, the perfect companion piece for Dover's print edition of the Divertimenti. The performances offer an unlikely combination of American accuracy and efficiency with a distinctly Viennese relaxation and lilt. It's the best of both continents. Philomusica's sonics and budget price can't be beat, and the performances cannot be matched. See also two other Mozartean gems from Philomusica: the three great Wind Serenades and a Mozart memorial that includes the 17th Piano Concerto and the G Minor String Quintet.

        I bought the Haydn CD for my daughter's birthday. Needless to say it was the right choice. Apparently her whole family has taken to listening to this CD during the dinner hour and apparently dinner is relaxing.
