A great CD.......2006-02-02

This collection of Paganini's music has it all. Great playing from both soloists, full of passion and presence, great recording, well balanced - a must for this kind of music and great pieces, all coming to life by Gil Shaham.

Epochal Paganini.......2005-08-09

This disc is a landmark in the history of Paganini performing.Gil Shaham's flawless technique simply makes the music shine in all its virtuosistic brilliance.Shaham's light-hearted approach to the music gives the pieces on this CD a level of warmth and intimacy that is hard to find in any other recording of Paganini works.The only draw-back to this recording is the fragmentary performance of the Grand Sonata.The CD is only barely over 60 minutes long and there is still plenty of place for the 2 remaining movements to fill in.But most of all,it is the marvellous playing from both Shaham and Gollscher that stuns any listener and make them hunger for more.

Aristocratic Playing.......2002-03-04

This is a delightful cd that still sets the standard for these varied violin/guitar pieces even though they were recorded in November '92. Gil Shaham plays with an aristocratic charm that makes every piece sound so refreshing and witty; he has imbued into these Paganini works the purest violin tones and cleanest approach of everyone who has tackled the same works including Monica Huggett's recordings on Harmonia Mundi and the inexpensive Naxos recordings. Indeed while listening to both Huggett's and Shaham's interpretations of the "Sonata Concertata", I prefer the latter simply because it is so much more refined; Huggett's playing seems more raw and less polished even though there may appear to be more energy. Huggett plays the piece as if it was a Baroque Miniature Masterpiece; Shaham plays it in the Classical Mold full of romance and feeling- imparting a greater degree of mystery and spirituality. Shaham makes every note sound just right and no quips with the interpretation; his refinement of technique reminds me of a young Arthur Grumiaux but with a even greater sense of mastery and control.

It is an interesting fact that Paganini wrote over 100 solo pieces for the guitar even though he is now known primarily for his violin works. Paganini is believed to have used the guitar as the instrument of choice during composition. Although his guitar pieces do not approach the virtuosic exuberance of the more famous violin counterparts such as the "24 Caprices", they define an intimate and private Paganini; one who indulges in a more relaxed and quiet setting- away from the fireworks of the stage performances. However make no mistake- many of these pieces from this recording are meant to be played with a lot of fire and splendid bowtapping such as the "Moto Perpetuo" (the last selection) and Shaham's rhythmic attack never slackens even in the most demanding passages.

"Paganini for Two" on first glance sounds like any other recording made especially for background dinner music (even the tiny sticker on the packaging highlights this point!)but there is a lot of lyrical refinement for even the serious Paganini collector and classical music lover. A number of Sonatas are included although at times the guitar plays a lesser role. I would have preferred to see the entire "Grand Sonata" appear in this recording but only the "Romance" from it- a very short four and a half minute piece is included. The rest of the programme if not generous is still varied and interesting- stretching slightly over 60 minutes.

All this talk of Shaham certainly does not detract from the wonderful accompaniment provided by veteran guitarist Goran Sollscher who was known previously for his luminous recordings of the Bach Lute suites (also on DG)and refreshing interpretations of even the music of the Beatles! You can hear every one of Sollscher's notes and this partnership is certainly a very successful one. To cap it all off, the sound is crystal clear with a lot of depth and proper soundstaging. The violin and guitar sound very holographic and on a good hi-fi equipment, this disc can be worthy of demonstration material.

A Solid 5 Star Recommendation? You bet!

I wonder what the musicians on this record could do, if they really let themselves go! Here we have so much brilliant skill, and Shaham & Söllcher could easily exchange a bit of it for some rage and tears. Then it should have been a six star rating on this record!

Glad to see Paganini's guitar music isn't being neglected........1999-07-09

Among the "big three" of classical writers for guitar (Sor, Giuliani, Paganini), Paganini seems to me best at integrating the guitar in chamber ensembles. Not that his guitar-violin relationship is static in these duets. In the Sonata Concertante, for example, the instruments are almost equal partners, with the guitar slightly upstage. In the six sonatas, the guitar merely provides accompaniment.

The common denominator is the likeability of this music, with little or none of the bravura writing for which Paganini is best known. In fact, among the three composers for the guitar above-mentioned, Paganini seems to me the most straight-ahead and guitaristic.

It's interesting to see Sollscher tackle this material, since he's best-known for his solo Bach transcriptions on his custom 11-string. Totally different -- and totally entrancing.

A good collection for someone fairly new to classical guitar. I have over 300 guitar recordings, but I still enjoyed this CD - a good one on the road, for example. Nice pieces and performances.

Great music CD collection for guitar music listeners.......2002-03-15

I really understand that there's no music CD could fulfill our satisfaction of music. But it does. I can find most of my favorite guitar classical songs here, and it's very nice listening them: Cavatina (from the Deer Hunter), Romance D'Amour, Recuerdos de la Alhambra, etc. I have several favorites not included in this album: Capricho Arabe-Lagrima-Adelita, and lucky me I have them on my other CDs. Go get this CD!! By buying this 1 CD, you'll have more than half of classical guitars you've ever wanted!

This is a really good choice for your morning music CD.......2001-11-08

There is something about classical guitar that is just so appropriate to background morning music as "Mad About Guitars" will quickly prove to you. Like most people, I am not overly familiar with classical guitar pieces; once you get past "Granada" I certainly could not name another work that I would expect to hear on such an album. The only other familiar pieces are "Greensleeves" and "Georgia on My Mind," and, yes, now that I think of it "Greensleeves" is a guitar piece, but then this album concludes with Bach's Fugue in G. So this collection is certainly going to broaden your horizons in terms of classical guitar. You will also come away with a great appreciation for Giran Sillscher, who plays the guitar on two-thirds of the selections. In fact, "Portrait," was written for Sillscher by Stanley Myers, which is certainly a nice testimonial to his skill. If you have a CD player in your alarm clock, this is an excellent choice for finding a happy home therein.

I think this CD is the best compilation of classical guitar music that's out there. Deutsche Grammophon has done a great job of picking the best pieces and the best players. Buy this CD!

This is a musical gem. Not showy or loud, this is not just another Beatle cover album! I unwind to this CD almost daily.

Possibly the best-ever arrangements of Beatles' songs.......2001-10-05

This may be the best-ever recording of arrangements of Beatles' songs. As previous reviewers have noted, other performers attempts at Beatles' songs are so often disasters.

[I don't include George Martin's In My Life with these, though.]

What makes this CD so successful is Sollscher's classical guitar expertise and the quality of the people writing the arrangements, which includes Toru Takemitsu, noted Japanese classical composer.

Five of the arrangements are by Sollscher himself.

Takemitsu's arrangement of the title track shows familiarity with the classical guitar medium, though it also features some exotic jazz chords. His other arrangements on the disk are Hey Jude, Michelle and Yesterday.

Without a doubt, the most interesting arrangements on the disk are the six by Borje Sandquist. His stray furthest from the original tunes, but do this in a musically satisfying way.

More Great Music from Goran Sollscher..........2001-08-16

This is Sollscher's first Beatles album, and DG released another last October. From Yesterday to Penny Lane has several new Beatles solos as well as the title suite by Brouwer. There are a few with Per Arne Glorvigen on Bandoneon. I love this version of I Want to Hold Your Hand. I hadn't realized that the original was in a minor key (it really is) and this rendition is fantastic.

The CD I have played most in the last four years.......1999-09-30

Brilliant classical playing, clear production and the variety of fresh arrangements are almost 'new' Beatles tunes. Jump at the start of 'Bathroom...' Listen for the 'first' time to 'I Me Mine' I hope you get the chance to enjoy it. Sadly, Gollscher did not lodge the arrangements at the DGG session, and I have only been able to track one published score -'And I love Her' - so simple, beautiful - yet playable! (Anyone who knows of other scores from this CD, please email !) His other CDs - more classical -are worth a listen, particularly if Brits wish a change from Williams and Bream, oops. Did I mention 'Georgia on My Mind' on 'Cavatina'CD ?

Sollscher arrangements & artistry compliment Beatles scores.......1999-04-25

So many musicians have tried their hand at the Beatles' music over the years. It has seemed to me that all of them have either created elevator music or awkwardly pretentious, pseudo-symphonic disasters. Enter Goran Sollscher who uses his impressive skills on the classical guitar to create a recording accessible to all tastes. Sollscher brings out a beauty in Lennon's and McCartney's scores that we haven't heard before. In more than a few of the tracks, Sollscher's arrangements are better than the originals. His style is smooth and melodious, very upbeat. His ability on the guitar is quite extraordinary. Sollscher's CD gives us the Beatles all over again.

Excellent Music and Recording.......2005-10-04

It is a better recording than other classical music CD's I've had, and is an impeccable execution of Bach's work. It led me to buy other "Mad About" series CD's of which I'll comment elsewhere. "Mad About Bach" is a fabulous CD of which I never tire. It is motivating. I have been listening to this "Mad About Bach" CD music for 8 years and still love it as one of my favorites.

I own and enjoy a good number of classical CD's but am far from an expert on what constitutes good and faithful performances. However, I can say that this CD is thoroughly enjoyable to me. My experience has been like lemur@earthling.net's, as many of these songs stay in my head, too, which is a great thing. A good bargain, too.

I thouroughly enjoy this CD! The music is beautiful enough to listen to all by itself, but also quiet and peaceful enough to listen to while studying for exams or doing homework. Mad about Baroque has been in my discman for many weeks and accompanied to the library many times. This is a great CD!

Beautiful!.......2005-10-20

Flawless, beautiful, relaxful performances. The 10-string is the only way to play Bach on the guitar. The range is much larger than a 6-string and it resembles an organ or lute at times. Goran is a master and he doesn't struggle with these compositions or his guitar which is absolutely unbelievable being that this is some of the most difficult music to play on the guitar.

This playing is stunning, as is the instrument, as is the
recording. His touch is unspeakably deft and fine. His
recording of the Bach lute suites is also available, but
you have to import it from Germany (amazon.de). For heaven's
sakes, do so!

Great performances of sublime music.......2001-11-27

This has to be one of the best albums of recent years.This disc contains perhaps the definitive versions of Barber's Adagio for Strings(L.A.Philharmonic under Bernstein)and Mahler's Adagietto from the 5th Symphony.Goren Sollscher does a great version of Rodrigo's Aranjuez Concerto(2nd movement).The Albinoni Adagio is also perfectly played.The Thomas Tallis Fantasia of Vaughan Williams is a remarkable work.The Elgar Elegy,Tchaikovsky's Serenade,and the orchestrated version of a Beethoven quartet are also great recordings.Duetsche Grammophone pulled out all the best from their catalogue to make this tremendous compilation.I'm surprised this disc hasn't received more attention.Oh well,a loss for those don't have it.I'm on my second copy.

This is a wonderful CD that moves the heart and soul. It can be used for deep healing and/or moving through painful emotional time in your life. Most of the selections are very up lifting to the heart and soul. The music selections are simple wonderful and speak to what is right and good about people. It is a great CD for Music Therapist or traditonal Counselors. I give it as a gift to friends and family members that I care about.
