Ogdon was a tremendously gifted pianist whose tragic death in 1989 at the age of 52 was a great loss for the world of music. Just listen to these recordings for instance, as they show Ogdon a complete master of these two concertos. These particular recordings are actually from the EMI vaults (the Unesco label shown here is misleading), and are actually excellent performances captured in very good sound. Ogdon's feeling for lyricism combined with power is evident in the Grieg and in the Schumann Ogdon shows off his poetic skills to great effect. Berglund's conducting of the New Philharmonia is more than adequate. In sum, while it may not match the best recordings of these two concertos (I love the Kovacevich/Colin Davis versions on the Philips label), it is a real bargain.
