4 out of 5 stars Vibrant sound and Performance, some questionable interpretetations.......2006-05-29

This particular michael murray recording makes up for the lack of recordings of the magnificent organ in St. John Divine. It is perhaps one of the greatest and largest American organs, notably the very powerful state trumpet stop located underneath one of the rose windows (This is one of the few stops of its kind in existence). The Agincourt Hynm really shows off what this stop is capable of. There is some good variety in this recording, although sometimes I felt that the State Trumpet was used in excess (it became annoying at points, simply because it was so powerful and overused). The biggest downfall of this recording is the interpretation of the Widor Symphony VI Finale. I felt the tempo was extremely too slow, and due to this, was lacking the excitment of this wonderful piece (For a more exciting, no holds-barred recording of the Widor 6th, check out David M. Patrick's recording). Overall, this recording is very powerful and really shows off what this famous, yet, not so very often recorded organ can do.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best ever.......1999-11-08

This disc has on it one of America's foremost organists playing one of the largest organs ever constructed. The result is a mix of good music well played with some rather irritating bits. Firstly, the Dunstable and the Purcell (actually by Jeremiah Clarke) make use of the incredible State Trumpet stop; whilst this makes for an excellent first track, in which it appears briefly at the start and end in a sort of fanfare motif, the use of this stop in the Trumpet Tune becomes ear-splitting and tiresome. Murray also has an apparent predilection for slower speeds (though in the main there is nothing wrong with that). Perhaps the most annoying thing is the second Vierne track (the Prelude in D major)- the sleeve notes make a clear point that "any music can be played on this organ", but whether as a result of the recording equipment or the gigantic acoustic or the instrument, it is as if this track was recorded through thick cotton wool from a distant room in the Cathedral. However, even with all these points, this is an interesting programme rendered with genuine sensitivity on a challenging instrument. Worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......1999-06-27

I bought this CD several years ago, and I never get tired of listening to it. Michael Murray gives his usual brilliant rendition of some of the world's greatest organ music in a setting with vibrant accoustics as St. John the Divine is one of the largest churches in the US. This should be required listening for any organ enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Audiophile delight.......2005-02-27

This is a CD that will tell you the truth about your sound system. Track 11, Widor's Adagio, Symphony No. 6. is a truly difficult piece to reproduce even for a top notch system. Abysmal, melodious bass well isolated against crystal clear highs. It will tell you every resonance in your listening room. Don't have an equalizer? You may want one after listening to this.

5 out of 5 stars A True Speaker Blower.......2003-07-28

This CD is perhaps the most listened to in my whole organ collection. From the most quiet and serene pieces to the abrasive, this CD has it all and Michael Murray masterfully knows how to exploit every little nuance. The shining jewel on this CD would have to be Dupre's Op. 7, No. 3. I don't know how one person can play this piece, but Murray manages in a way only a master organist can. His stop usage on the Ruffatti brings out the amazing range of this instrument as well as its tonal characteristics that make it one of the great organs of the western U.S.

5 out of 5 stars The Music is Served.......2003-05-24

I grew up in the 70's listening to Virgil Fox and thinking he was the "most". In the 80's it was Carlo Curly. As my music tastes changed and refined, I realized that they were the "Liberace's" of the organ: style over substance. Now I truly appreciate the playing of Michael Murray, and I feel that this CD truly showcases his gift. It is a wonderful eclectic mix of Bach and some of the 20th Century organ masters. What is so wonderful about this CD is that in spite of a large instrument at his disposal (which Fox or Curley would utilize to it's fullest) Murray selects registration for the Bach that allows the music to shine through, yet allows the contemporary Ruffatti voicing to enhance the Bach vision of God. It is the perfect balance between the garishnous of Fox and the conservative playing of E. Power Biggs. The Bach is played with great articulation and expressiveness, serving the music well. Then the fire starts with Messian's "Du Parmi Nou". It continues with Dupre (Murray's teacher), some gentle Widor, and finishes with a brilliant interpretation Cesar Frank's "Final in Bb". The Telarc engineers truly picked up the dynamics of the Davies Symphony Hall installation (this recording was made before the wonderful acoustical renovation in the early '90's). This is an excellent CD to own for the instrument, the music and the performance.

3 out of 5 stars Masterly Dupre and Widor - mannered Franck.......2004-05-07

I recommend this recording very highly. The sound of the organ and playing is magnificent especially in the Dupre and Widor selections. The Franck "Grand Piece Symphonique" however, is another story. After all the scholarship and attention to original playing editions in the past 30+ years, it amazes me that Murray still hangs on to the mannered, in my opinion, highly unmusical, Lemmens' 'legato' style in his interpretation of the Franck work. Buy this for the Dupre and Widor selections, they are amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Best ever recording of the St. Sulpice organ.......2002-12-13

American organist Michael Murray (Marcel Dupré's last American pupil and Dupré's biographer) together with the recording engineers at Telarc have scored a winning combination with this new recording of Cavaille-Coll's *opus magnum* instrument. The three composers represented all have a link to the organ of St. Sulpice. The Dupre works are engaging, with a tight sense of construction and a dash of post-romantic harmonies, quintessentially French. My first impression of the Widor Finale from Sym. No. 6 was that Murray plays it too slow; however upon repeated listenings I find his tempo just right; the piece unfolds at the proper pace, and no details are lost (this was after all Widor's own organ). As it is, truly majestic and truly exciting. The varied sections of the Franck show a great mastery of form and emotional intensity that Murray carries off with aplomb. The recorded sound is AWESOME, from the singing foundation stops, powerful ensembles, lovely solo registers, to shimmering celestes, brilliant reeds and mixtures, and the teeth-rattling intensity of the pedal Contre-bombarde. The recording captures the ideal balance of instrument and acoustics. An absolute "must have" for organ enthusiasts!

1 out of 5 stars Technique does not a musician make.......2005-06-22

Virgil Fox was without question one of the greatest technical players of the century. Unfortunately, while demonstrating incredible ability, this recording - and Fox's myriad others - also demonstrate conclusively that he was a performer completely without taste or finesse. While I, as a musician, am admittedly awed by the tempo at which he is able to take the Widor, I am also, frankly, annoyed at the sounds he wrestles from the instrument - the organ seems to 'bark' at the listener, owing to the harshness of his attack and articulation. And the tempo even takes its toll on him in the final bars, as his playing takes on a definite "hang on for dear life" edge.
The Dm Toccata and Fugue (BWV 565)sounds like a monstrous creation in the hands of a man who unashamedly classified J.S. Bach as a Romantic composer. Played by Fox, the contrapuntal majesty of the Fugue is transformed into nothing more than a technical etude for the organist, who seems bent on showing the world that he can play more notes than anyone else, and misses the point of the music completely in the process.
The Franck "Piece Heroique" is poorly concieved, badly registered and unmusically played. Fox, once again, shows that he has no concept of phrasing and line, and seems to think it necessary to beat the music out of the instrument. The same goes for the Alain piece; in addition, Fox's generous liberties in tempo not only defy the composer's instruction of unbroken motion, but make the piece so tedious that it is nearly unlistenable.

For good Bach interpretations, I recommend the recordings of E. Power Biggs, Helmut Walcha, Ton Koopman, and Marie-Claire Alain. Michael Murray's Bach is also good, if a bit heavy-handed and ponderous. If you can find Anton Heiller's recordings of Bach, they are absolutely definitive.
For recordings of the French repertoire, Marie-Claire Alain is at the very top of the list. The old recordings of Marie-Madeline Durufle-Chevalier (widow of Maurice Durufle) are excellent, and Michael Murray, a student of the late Marcel Dupre, are also worth a listen. Dupre himself made a few recordings which are difficult to find but well worth the effort, as he was probably the greatest organist of the 20th century.

Virgil Fox's recordings are worthwhile perhaps if one is a student of the instrument. Otherwise, look elsewhere for recordings that exhibit true musicianship. Fox proved again and again throughout his career that he was more interested in how fast his fingers and feet could move, than in what they had the potential to communicate.

1 out of 5 stars world's most famous notes missing.......2005-03-17

will someone PLEASE explain to me how it is possible to make a recording of the Bach toccata and fugue in d minor and have the first two notes of one of the most famous openings of all time MISSING!!!!!!!!!!??????????

THANK GOD THIS CD IS ONLY SIX BUCKS ON AMAZON.

shame on whoever is responsible. they should have a disclaimer on the jacket.

ps to all organ fans. beware of the latest scandel: a dvd supposedly of fox playing, which shows nothing but an inane kaleidoscope circle accompanied by photos of kids on rollercoasters and sheep safely grazing for the entire duration with fox nowhere to be found. there are two of these discs by a company called seemusicdvd. and you will have to fight with the record store owner of course when trying to return the open dvd. fortunately tower in nyc took mine back for credit. one thinks they're getting the light show PLUS fox as he had in some of his concerts, but there is no fox! and the one entitled Bach Gamut doesn't even attempt to give the slightest warning on the front of the box and only a vague bit of info on the back.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not Great Work by Fox.......2004-08-21

I'll be honest--I bought this disc to get a good recording of the Widor Toccata, and though it is better than the first recording I've heard, it does suffer a bit. The tempo is amazingly quick, and even though I've listened intently, I haven't heard many mistakes (like other reviewers have said--it goes by almost too quickly.) The recording as a whole comes off somewhat dry--the building an organ is in is a big part of how the instrument sounds. Still, other recordings have far too much echo to get a clear picture of what is heard--this may go too far in the other direction though--losing some of the resonance that a huge cathedral can give to the king of instruments. If this work is subpar for Fox, then I am eager to find a great recording from his prime years--unfortunately, much may be lost in the transfer of media given that many believe he was not in prime form when digital recording came to be.
Those who are looking to hear technical brilliance, and who aren't steeped in the history of organ recordings will find this CD very enjoyable for the work and career it represents.

I still have the LP's, in mint condition, since I recorded them on metal tape and never played the vinyl since, but, I retired my cassette deck several years ago. The CD is well balanced from bottom to top and the only flaw is the first two notes (A,G) are missing from track one. This combination of a very large five division organ and the genious of Virgil Fox and a fine master recording is difficult to beat. A definite lease breaker!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Organ CDs.......2004-05-24

I respectfully disagree with Mr. Hall's review and comments that Mr. Fox was past his prime. The Bach pieces sustain your interest and Fox was the master of the French masterworks. The Jongen is great but so are the Vierne and the Dupre renderings.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-19

This instrument is known as one of the most perfect pipe organs in existance. Perfect because it is housed in an acoustic environment designed to project sound (literally hear a pin drop from one side of the tabernacle to the other). The instrument alone is 11,623 pipes with 5 manuals and sounds like the ideal description for the title "King Of Instruments", especially in this recording of some of the greatest French Romantic pieces. They are majestic.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Poulenc, good solo works.......2004-03-28

This CD has actually become one of my favorites. In fact, I often bring this out when demonstrating my stereo to guests.

The solo works on the Boston Symphony Hall organ are cleanly played and effectively show the colors of this instrument while also taking advantage of the room's amazing acoustic. Mr. Murray's playing is accurate with much attention to phrasing, however, I personally could stand for more rhythmic flexibility. At times, it seems that he's playing along with a metronome. Still, the first 9 selections give a good sampling of this historic Aeolian-Skinner organ.

However, it is the Poulenc Concerto for Organ and Strings which makes this recording invaluable. Recorded on another large Aeolian-Skinner organ at St. Phillip's in Atlanta, this track features a near-perfect balance between the strings and timpani of the Atlanta Philharmonic, under the direction of Robert Shaw, and the large organ.

The sound-stage in this particular recording is immense and those of you who have invested in high-end audio will be richly repaid when listening to this particular piece at home. The organ has tremendous clarity and dynamic range, the strings are so well-captured that you would swear the players are right in the room with and the timpani strikes have perfect percussiveness, and balance.

In this particular piece, Mr. Murray's playing is anything but metronomic. In fact, he seems to hook into the wonderful lyric qualities of the string parts and presents a very flexible, musical and insightful performance. To me, this is one of the great pieces for organ and strings and he pulls off the challenging organ part with confidence and style.

For those of you who like Poulenc and are looking for a beautiful performance which is well recorded, you can't do much better.

5 out of 5 stars Great performance, great instrument, great music!.......1999-05-08

Albert Schweitzer, writing in 1906, describes the French organ-playing tradition thus: The modern French school is the result of this perfected organ construction....The French organist seeks a quiet plasticity that brings the tone pattern to the listener in all its greatness. It seems to me that the French organist even sits more quietly at his console. With all of them one finds an absolute precision in pressing and releasing the keys, which results in blending and clear, natural phrasing. "Organ playing," Widor once said to me on the organ bench at Notre Dame as the rays of the setting sun streamed through the dusk of the nave in transfigured peace,"is the manifestation of a will filled with a vision of eternity. All organ instruction, both technical and artistic, has as its aim only to educate a man to the pure manifestation of the higher will. This will, expressed by the organist in the objectivity of this instrument, should overwhelm the hearer, so that even the thoughtless hearer cannot escape from it, but even after the second measure grasps and comprehends it whether he will or not..." Michael Murray follows the French organ school teaching to a "T" at the great Aeolian-Skinner organ at Boston's Symphony Hall. The first nine selections were recorded there. The last selection, Poulenc's Concerto for Organ,Strings and Timpani was recorded at the Cathedral of Saint Philip in Atlanta and uses sound itself as an expressive device, offering abundant contrasts, particularly of tone color, as the solo instrument's palette of diapasons, flutes, strings and reeds intermix with each other and with the timbres of the orchestra.

      Album Description

"One of the world's great instruments played by an exceptional musician!" -- The Organ Magazine

The late Jean Langlais composed the Trumpet Tune expressly for Jonathan Dimmock, and this is his first recording of the piece. The Trumpet Tune was also written especially for the organ used on this recording. This re-issue (formerly on Arkay) is the definitive recording of the magnificent Aeolian-Skinner organ at the cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. Recorded in the world's largest Gothic cathedral!

5 out of 5 stars Marcel Dupré Recital.......2007-03-21

This is a remake from an old 33 rpm recorded in 1957 and it's sure worth the price! Marcel Dupré, French organist of the beginning of the 20th century was well known in United States because of its frequent trips in America.

Recorded at Saint-Thomas Church in New-York, the repertoire is far from an eclectic one : only classics from Franck's three Chorals and C.M.Widor, Allegro. The highlight of this Cd is certainly the Salve Regima, from Widor. Bright and meditative at the same time, this piece is to my point, the climax of the Cd, after the Chorals from Franck.

      Recording is great.

Few little mistakes of and on, but who will complaint? After all, Dupré is at the tribune!

In short, a masterpiece for those who like prestigious organ player and the talent of a great composer at the tribune of Saint-Thomas' organ, playing the most beautiful repertoire of French composers.

I wouldn't get rid of this Cd for lot of money.

      A must!

5 out of 5 stars Music for organ lovers.......2003-02-21

As a lay person who is just beginning to learn about organ music, my opinion is uneducated at best. This is the CD that has hooked me. It has opened my ears to the subtle and not-so-subtle differences between various performers, instruments, and how music of a composer sounds on different instruments. I love to listen to this CD and compare it to Ben van Oosten's recording on a Cavaille-Coll by MDG (another one of my favorites). The ADD recording gives this disc a warmth of tone that a DDD recording simply cannot reproduce. The Allegro of the 6th symphony is frequently recorded and is on many "organ favorites" discs. I can't imagine how, but, you might even be sick of it. When the power and style of this performance blow your mind and make you realize you are listening to a true virtuoso, it will become your favorite recording of this piece. The Salve Regina is incredible as well. I cannot comment on technique or the other minutia that organists or students of music may be able to discuss, but I can speak to the rare ability of Marcel Dupre to use the power of this instrument to make a recording that is awesome in its beauty, thunderous might, and sheer volume of sound. I wish Gerry Hancock would open up the organ like this more often when I visit for Sunday service.

      5 out of 5 stars REAL SOUND=A TRUE DIAMOND.......2001-09-27

This is indeed a true GEM. I have the original recording,Mercury did a first rate transfer. The recording was made 10/1957 CD transfer 1992. The sound is crisp clean and clear. Shut your eyes YOU ARE THERE,a must for organ lovers. This is only one of the many recordings Marcel Dupre' made in his 85 years. The organ was built by Ernest M. Skinner Organ Co. In 1913 at the St. Thomas Church,New York City. Mercury has four or more masters with M. Dupre' at Sainte-Suplice in Paris,France everyone, that means you. Let Mercury know you would like these to. Thanks ever so much.
