More than the sum of the parts........2001-02-04

I bought this as wallpaper music - and got a very pleasant surprise!

Several of the pieces stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and forced me to listen.

Michala Petri demonstrates a masterly control of her instrument and a high level of musicianship in a wide ranging selection of material - from reconstituted Bach to specially composed 20th Century pieces.

Outstanding for me was the Sammartini Concerto: Ms Petri shows a lightness of touch combined with serious enthusiasm and an obvious delight that literally stopped me from working and made me listen. The support given by the Moscow Virtuosi also deserves mention.

Koppel's pieces are fun, as are the arrangements from Grieg and Satie.

Overall, although this could be taken as a glorified sampler... it is much more - there are complete works played intelligently and lighter, throw away pieces you'll want to chase after and listen to again.

A Great First CD.......2000-06-22

After falling in love with the recorder, I started searching for CDs and this was the first I bought. It quickly became a favorite CD. I like the fact that it ranges over a wide period--Baroque to Modern, and showcases the instrument in different settings. The liner notes are quite comprehensive as well. In a word--enchanting.

The sublime collection.......2000-06-18

I must confess up front to being a Michala Petri fanatic. I also play the recorder, although after listening to this album, I feel like throwing my instruments into the nearest dumpster.

Michala Petri is a national hero in Denmark, and a recognized name among classical music fans in Europe, Asia, and Canada. If you listen to this album, you will ask yourself how the music business in the USA can frantically promote "The Three Tenors" while mostly ignoring the genius of this amazing young woman.

This is not your kid's recorder. Ms Petri's complete technical and musical mastery of her instrument transforms the recorder into the equal of other familiar solo instruments, but with its own peculiar sound, penetrating but sweet, that sets it apart.

This album is made up mostly of tracks from her many earlier recordings. Some are transcriptions of well-loved piano miniatures (the Grieg numbers are perhaps more charming here than on the piano, if that is possible); of baroque works for flute, recorder, or strings; of modern recorder music written for Ms Petri by contemporary masters. Some are accompanied by small orchestra and others by Ms Petri's husband, the excellent guitarist and lutist Lars Hannibal. The combination of recorder and guitar is an intimate match made in heaven, and I recommend also this duo's complete album, 'Air'.

Ultimate Collection is Gross Understatement.......2000-03-28

This is by far the best "sampler" I have ever heard. The playing is so superb and the recorder so perfect a vehicle that I found myself listing to too often played pieces like Satie's Gymopedie No.1 as if for the first time. Same for the Grieg. It is very hard to believe these renderings aren't the original intention of the composers. This is a guaranteed winner.

Although most of this set is devoted to major cello concertos (Elgar, Saint-Saëns, Dvorák, Schumann, Haydn) that Du Pré played so well, perhaps the most treasurable recording is one of two Beethoven cello sonatas with the pianist Stephen Bishop (Kovacevich). Recorded very early in her career, these show Du Pré at her most eloquent, the early promise of a great career so cruelly interrupted. This set includes most of the cellist's best recordings. Too bad it's not 10 times the size. If the cellist's passion occasionally seems excessive, at least it's the right kind of flaw to have. --Leslie Gerber

Mostly valuable for the sonatas & suites.......2002-07-02

Although Jackie du Pre's playing in the Elgar, Delius and Schoenberg concerti was superb, I for one simply find nothing to admire in that music. Perhaps this is my fault, perhaps not, but in general there are so many superb recordings of the Haydn and Dvorak concerti that only the sentiments surrounding her decline into MS and early death recommend them.

On the other hand, the recordings of the Chopin, Beethoven and other sonatas in the second 3 discs of this set are among the most moving recordings ever made. Jackie never had quite the golden tone or perfect technique of Feuermann or Yo-Yo Ma, and this shows itself more in the Bach unaccompanied cello suites where she plays a few scratchy-sounding turns, but the deep-down love and emotional commitment of her playing always communicated itself effectively. In short, then, I recommend this set for the sonatas & suites, but if you also enjoy these concerto recordings, you will love it all.

this is a wonderful recording of some of the best cello music played by one of the worlds best cello players, the late jacqueline du pre. jackie had magic in her fingertips and listening to these recordings is pure joy, one of the best set I had the chance to hear.

Great record of Great cellist at Great budget price.......2000-11-04

The collection dosen't have Brahms's Cello Sonatas. But you picture her portrait by these 6 CDs( The cost is 7 dollars or less per one CD ). If you don't know what kind of cellist she was--yet, I want you to get it.

You would meet extraordinary emitted passion by Du Pre in Elgar( needlees to say, it is one of her most famous performance), Saint-Saens, Dovrak( in spite of unskillful conducting of Barenboim), Schumann. The set has not only her famous performance of the Concertos in disk 1-3, but also various Sonatas( Barenboim makes excellent piano playing in good harmony with his wife more than support) in disk 4-6.

Furthermore, the Bach's Cello Suite No.1 and No.2, as her only solo performance in this collection, are very interesting. Its passionate Bach(!!) is certainly like Du Pre.

A Great Compilation of Great Cello Music.......2000-07-26

This collection, composed of the great works for the cello, is a must have in any serious classical music fan's library. It is an even better collection for the "newbie" to the genre. Jacqueline du Pre was undoubtedly one of the greatest artist of the century and her passion is well documented in this collection. Just get it...if you like classical music...you'll like this collection and the price is great too. What's to lose?

Wonderful! Indispensable! So why only four stars..?.......2000-03-19

This is definitely worth getting, and Amazon's price is right. Du Pre was one of the greatest ever (Yo-Yo Ma now owns her cello, in case any of you play Classical Music Trivial Pursuit), and I cry inwardly when I think of her early death. The Elgar Concerto alone on this set is enough to justify the purchase price. After she died, several "name" conductors vowed they would never perform or record it again with anybody, so strong was their memory of her. So why only four stars here? Two reasons: some of these performances are with hubby Daniel Barenboim conducting, and they just aren't quite in the same league as the other efforts. Just compare the Barbirolli Haydn and the Barenboim Haydn to see what I mean: both are slow-tempoed, and neither would be my top-drawer choice. But Barbirolli *almost* makes it work, and has a certain perverse logic, whereas DB is just dull and colorless and square. The second defect is the remastered sound, which oftentimes is not very good. Sure these are "historic" recordings, but they're not that old, most are stereo. Still, the sound is flat and clipped at the high end. This should not dissade anyone from getting this set, however. Just don't expect a sonic demo disc. You will get thrilling cello playing across a broad selection of repertoire.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Lawrence's great strength as a trombonist is the simple loveliness of his sound, which comes through beautifully on some of the older, simpler melodies.

Mark Lawrence really has something special here. His interpretations are supremely rewarding, yet beautifully restrained. The Albinoni and Mediatation on the alto trombone are just gorgeous - in my mind well ahead of Alessi recordings of classic string pieces like The Swan. And the Marcello is a formidable interpretation, up there with the best string players, although he doesn't really get the baroque sound sometimes. In general the tone isn't quite as wide and gorgeous as Alessi, but he's picked the repertoire well so this isn't a problem. All in all, an awesome disc, up there with my top three best and complementary recordings out there for trombone (Joe Alessi's NY Legends and Lindberg's Virtuoso Trombone are the others).

Great Stuff.......2001-09-09

This is a terrific CD. Mark Lawrence demstrates complete mastery of the trombone. This CD covers just about every type of music for the trombone, from very melodic, to 20th Century, to Jazz. Buy this CD. You'll be glad you did.

Brilliant.......2000-06-19

This CD shows the capability of Mark Lawrence as compared to other popular trombonists, like Christian Lindberg and Joseph Alessi. Lawrence has the soloistic feel of Lindberg (which is my only complaint against Alessi), and can play convincingly in all the styles exhibited on this disc (which is one of Lindberg's problems). This is a must buy for all trombone enthusiasts!

Typical excellence.......2006-03-22

If you are looking for a disc with first-rate interpretations of some of the standards in brass band literature, this recording (and its somewhat more refined Volume 1) begs your attention. All of the performances are extremely clean and precise, and the technical requirements of these works are often extensive. There are the moments of overly sentimental playing and wobbly vibrato that was so off-putting to Vaughan Williams in his Henry V, but nothing outside of the standard practice in most British Brass Bands.

Mining may be tough on the lungs, but it does wonders for the embouchure. Wonderful sound, musicianship and conducting. The only flaw, and it is present in their soundtrack recording of "Brassed Off" as well, is the engineer's stubborn refusal to crank up the volume on the gorgeous fleugel solos --when accompanied by the entire band, these lovely riffs (In "Brassed Off, "En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor" is a classic musical paradox-- at once stunning in both it's economy and lavishness) struggle to be heard and sound like they were phoned in from a pub across the street. Still, the band plays on, flawlessly.

CLassical Clarinet Lovers Look Here!.......2000-06-13

This is a very good CD that covers a broad range of music. The Mozart Concerto for clarinet is especially good, as Emma is able to really make it sing. Other highlights on this disc are the Finzi Bagatelles and the "Victorian Country Gardens". Both are exceptional pieces of music. I had never heard Emma play before, but now I am hooked, and I can't wait to get another recording. I definetly reccomend this for the classical Clarinet lover.

Excellent Malcolm Arnold Clarinet Music.......2004-09-06

Malcolm Arnold's clarinet music is really a treat to listen to, and Emma Johnson plays it very well. I find that Arnold (along with a few other composers such as Jean Francaix) has an uncanny skill for creating music that is fun an lighthearted without sacrificing musical integrity, and these pieces are just that. They are simultaneously fun, light, and almost cheesy at times, but also are well-crafted pieces that offer much deeper musical satisfaction.

The First Concerto, scored for clarinet and strings, is fun and charming. The Second Concerto seems much darker than the first, though the last movement is a fun, rag (as the piece was written for Benny Goodman). Emma Johnson plays the concertos well, though if you want to hear a truly impressive cadenza (the cadenza in the 2nd concerto is nto written and must by written by the performer), check out Martin Frost's version on BIS records.

The Fantasy for solo clarinet is a nice unaccompanied piece, more lyrical and pleasing than many modern unaccompanied pieces. While the piece isn't particularly difficult, it does showcase the lyrical aspects of the clarinet, as well as it's ability to create extremes in dynamics.

The Sonatina is a wonderfully fun, rhythmically-driving show piece. Emma Johnson plays this pieces really well, with the right combination of drive and lightness (neither of the other versions I've heard, Paul Meyer and Victoria Soames, achieve this delicate balance as well as Johnson does).

The other two pieces, the wind trio and quintet, are both fun and typically Arnold. The quintet is particular is very popular, and it is clearly a crowd pleaser.

Emma Johnson's playing here is great and very appropriate. With the exception of the Second Concerto (written for Goodman), the other pieces were inspired by British clarinetists, and it's refreshing to hear a British clarinetist perform these pieces in all their glory and know that there is no basis to criticize their sound as "too-British". This is a truly great CD for any music fan/clarinetist.

Perfect

I found this CD in chicago, where this brit now lives, and the tunes and themes are such a retrieval cue for sunday afternoons watching these old stiff upper lip black and white movies on tv. Just what I needed, although the addition of 4 weddings is slightly odd. Good quality recordings...:-)
