more wonderous with each passing year.......2006-11-13

Most of the reviewers have said (and better than I can) what makes this album so special. I remember having this on cassette and wearing it out. People who have no interest (and sometimes I can't blame them...) in classical music might grow fond of this if they give it a try. You don't need any kind of background or knowledge, just a willingness to open your heart and ears to something so sublime it is beyond words. Bach is our true musical spiritual leader!

I can't over-exaggerate the impact this album had on me when my Dad played it for me when I was about 6. It encouraged me to become a guitarist, and hearing it was my first truly profound musical experience that I can remember.

I love all kinds of music, but nothing has touched me like this album in the 19 years since then. Parkening's reading of Bach arranged for the classical guitar is flawless on this recording; no one, not even his mentor has matched it.

"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring", "Sheep May Safely Graze" and especially "Sleepers Awake" are the best renditions of these songs that I've heard, regardless of the arrangement. His control and dynamics are just staggering.

I can't explain where this album or music came from. It's my absolute favourite album. It's part of human evolution and the continually unfolding Great Work.

The Perfect Storm.......2005-04-07

The are times when the musician, the composer, and the instrument just match perfectly; this disc is an example of that.

Nevermind that Bach never wrote a single note for the guitar, many of his pieces actually work better on the guitar than they would the clavier. The guitar provides much more opportunity for the musician to impart emotion by varying volume and tone. And Parkening capitalizes on that opportunity beautifully.

His playing is clean, thoughtful, and competent. This is, in my opinion, clearly Parkening's best recording. I highly recommend it. (I also recommend his In the Spanish Style, another of my favorites).

Parkening Play Bach and Plays Him Stunningly!.......2005-02-18

I have loved this recording for over 20 years. I had it on vinyl and was thrilled when it was released in 1985 onto CD along with 6 extra cuts. Originally a Bach interpretive LP of 10 tracks, the CD release added 6 compositions from Couperin, Handel, Weiss, Scarlatti and Visee.

This is now a rare recording, so get it while you can. It's peaceful, highly skilled and simply Christopher Parkening, playing bare and alone, and shining like the sterling musician he is!

Masterpiece.......2003-09-24

The music of J. S. Bach seems to bring out the best in Christopher Parkening. Mr. Parkening understands Bach, and plays his music with grace, intelligence and sensitivity. He displays those qualities magnificently on this collection.

The selections here represent a wide variety of Bach pieces: portions of cantatas, solo cello works, and pieces from the Well-Tempered Clavier. All of the pieces are transcribed skillfully for solo guitar, and every track flows naturally into the next. Standouts among the Bach pieces include "Sheep May Safely Graze" and "Sleepers Awake"--two meditative cantata selections which were so brilliantly arranged and performed that you'd almost think they were originally written for guitar.

And the additional baroque works presented here are not just "filler." Mr. Parkening gives stunning performances of great pieces composed by baroque giants like Handel, and he closes the recording in great style, with a passionate performance of Scarlatti.

Great CD to explore Cello Music.......2001-04-12

The Elgar was performed so beautifully and so was the Bloch. The huge pieces were carried with viruosity. Iserliss is a great player and this is largely apparent in the shorter Tchaikovsky pieces (Andante Cantabile, Nocturne, Pezzo Cappriccioso) because the phrases were so charming and you just let the sound of the cello melt in your ear. This is an awesome deal so buy it and be careful where you leave your CD because a minor scratch keeps me from listening to the Kabalevsky Concerto.

It's the 2nd CD itself that's mislabeled, NOT the CD case.......2001-03-14

Like the first reviewer, I, too, was disappointed when I first opened this 2-CD set. Among the listings on the back of the CD case are the tracks for Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rocco Theme for Cello and Orchestra" and Strauss' "Don Quixote", which are supposed to be on the 2nd CD. However, on the CD, itself, is printed the label, "RAVEL: Chamber Music (The Nash Ensemble).

Well, turns out, it's the CD itself that's mislabeled, not the CD case; for upon playing it your realize that the CD contains the tracks exactly as listed on the back of the CD case (with Steven Isserlis on the cello, I presume).

Anyway, this is a fine 2-CD set, passionately played, with well-recorded sound. And for the price, it's an exceptional deal!

You can't go wrong!.......1999-12-29

If the 2nd CD in the package was misplaced it was probably a packaging error - I doubt Virgin would intentionally distribute a recording labelled as something else. For either cello connoisseurs who aren't familiar with many of Steven Isserlis' recordings or a novice who wants a sampling of some of the great cello concerto masterpieces played REALLY well, you can't go wrong with this bargain reissue. The sound is gorgeous, intense, and there aren't many other places you'll find any interpretations of the original version of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations of Kabalevsky's powerful unjustly neglected 2nd concerto.

sharing lunch with my mother, the CD is playing three rooms away on my computer.
her commentaires lays on "how precise is the sound from that CD" side of things... i smile and i explain her that actually the CD is a remastering of an old analogic recording, so the sound quality has no reason to be brilliant (though excellent considering when it has been recorded).... moreover, my computer loudpseakers are really bad quality, so that adds up... she looks a bit embarassed and i try to find a way out for her and for me too, because actually what i'm listening is really something great.
so that's it... it's Rachmaninoff himself playing... if you know what you're doing and meaning, it will go through no matter what.

always ask for people who know what they're doing deep inside themselves... colors are different, and things just flow.
i recall reading Physics books from Landau, Von Neumann, Heisenberg.... compared to the mushy physics explained on most reference textbooks, "their" Physics is really tackling things on the core side.

Pablo Casals's Dvořák hasn't been out of the catalogues since it was made in 1936. A generation of music-lovers was imprinted with Casals's vision of the work, and it's still, to these ears, the best version of the greatest cello concerto ever written. Casals brings to it a big, bold tone, an almost vocal singing of the rich melodies without oversentimentalizing, and an unerring choice of tempos. He's aided by George Szell and the Czech orchestra; this music was in their blood and it shows. The Boccherini, in the corrupt Grutzmacher edition, may be a stylistic anachronism, but with such gorgeous playing, who cares? The Bruch gets a flowing, warm-hearted performance. Mark Obert-Thorn's transfers make these ancient classics sound fresh. --Dan Davis

Karl Muck was said to have been quite a sweetheart--cold, bitter, and nasty. You'd never know it from the warmth of these 1927-1929 recordings. The disc has its share of warhorses--the Flying Dutchman Overture, Meistersinger's Act One Prelude, etc.--but Muck invests them with a compelling freshness. The Dutchman, for example, has an impactful thrust and excitement, with the sonic equivalent of splashing waves. The highlight, though, is the Parsifal Act One Prelude, an incredibly involving, slow but rapt, concentrated performance. Muck owned that opera, conducting it for the better part of thirty years at the Bayreuth Wagner Festival, where he was a mainstay. Bryan Crimp's transfers are remarkably fine.
