Another example of a hiccup by my computer or mouse - not sure which one - and multiple reviews were submitted. Sorry about that.

This is the third volume of Rheinberger Sonatas by Wolfgang Rubsam and again I am pleased at the quality and technique as well as structural craftsmanship, especially as the later sonatas are approaching the half hour mark. Just learning the hundreds of thousands of notes is an accomplishment in itself but sculpturing the long pieces into a single unit is perhaps an even greater effort.

In a sense, the composer assists in this effort by introducing and reintroducing themes. The writing is now becoming dense in parts - like Vierne's sober, thick First Organ Symphony. But Rheinberger is too much a melodist to become infatuated with so-called "walls of sound". Despite the intensity, he repeatedly emerges with absolutely beautiful melodies that literally sing to the listener.

The Eighth is another somber work and the technical demands of the final movement (Passacaglia) is especially noteworthy. The Ninth (in B flat Minor) alludes to an almost Classical tone in parts yet explores various Romantic realms at ease. This is the longest and most mature of the first nine. It is extremely original without departing from the strict confines of a strucure the composer apparently relishes.

The Trios are miniature tone poems with a German, Romantic appeal. Some are gems, others are simply melodic

This recording is a good addition to any collection of organ recordings. Rubsam is certainly a well-respected performer, and this recording is no exception. Rheinberger is a composer well-known to organists, and while there are certainly many other higher profile recordings of his works to be had, this is a good recording for half the price of others.

5 out of 5 stars All Good Things..........2003-08-19

OK OK - I admit it in this edited version. My computer went belly up and submitted multiple reviews. But in this case I think the subject is worthy of all the praise.

Yes, this is currently the last recording of the Rheinberger Sonatas by Wolfgang Rubsam. It is pitiful that there is not a single collection of the Sonatas in their entirety (No 15 seems to be the hardest to locate). Again, I praise these recordings for their affordable price, the detailed liner notes, the sequential order of presentation and last (but certainly not least) the grand interpretation of a great German Romantic.

The Tenth in B Minor opens broadly and again, quintessentially organist (if there is such a word - and if not there should be). It proceeds almost majestically, a mighty, solemn prelude with brief pauses. The Andante is followed by a Fantasie, this Sonata having only three movements. The opening bars set the stage for a concluding Allegro non troppo that is again punctuated with several pauses in which the composer seems to gather his forces for a final charge.

The Eleventh in D Minor has long been a favorite due to its dark, infectious overflowing nature. The Agitato is another of those pieces for virtuosos only. It relaxes rarely and the massive sound recalls Widor, the gorgeous melodies, Bruckner, the conclusion, Reger. The beautiful Adagio precedes the famous Intermezzo whose ABA structure alternates between beautiful melodies and sharp chords. The final fugue begins without pause and the haunting melody intertwines with an early melody as they grow and evolve into something majestic and awe-inspiring.

Needless to say, I await the next batch.

5 out of 5 stars Rich, Romantic Sound.......2003-08-20

I have returned to edit a duplicate review (one is not allowed to delete a review after it has been submitted) explaining that yes, the CD was great and no, I did not mean to submit the same review twice.

What is so outstanding about these 20 sonatas is the consumate artistry of the set. Along with their meticulous craftmanship they are also peculiarly "organistic" in a way that other organ works are not. Rheinberger was a musical genius encased in a rather parochial veneer. One cannot imagine this happily married devout Catholic engaging in shenanigans like Lizst, Beethoven or Wagner. The composer did not set out to cause waves but to make music. It is unfortunate that only his organ works are heard today, but at least we have that much. Many composers have now faded into oblivion, only to be remembered as footnotes.

These twenty Sonatas, along with the two Organ Concertos, define the German Romantic Movement. His Peace Concerto, composed prior to WWI, evidenced a naive but noble belief that the nations of Europe could live in peace. Little did he realize that his own adopted land would be the instigator of two conflicts over the next four decades.

Although the Sonatas evolve in complexity and style, their basic structure and style are set from the first - a strict sonata framerwork, a fast slow fast, and a concluding fugue. This does not imply a lack of originality since it is more difficult to demonstrate variety within a set form that establish new forms. The first Sonata in C Minor is majestic and again, utterly organistic. For example, Lizst's organ music always sounds like a piano, Saint-Saens a symphony and Handel's a harpsichord. The punctuated sounds of the bass, the virtuosity of writing for both hands and feet, the flowing harmonies with their semi-quaver rhythm (a Rheinberger hallmark) - all of these are present in the first Sonata.

The only complaint concerns the Third Sonata. This work is magisterial and should be taken at a more stately pace than Rubsam allows. In parts, it sounds hurried. But this is a minor quibble with what is surely a definitive recording
