The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good.......2007-07-04

This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.

2 out of 5 stars The Opera #1 Opera Album.......2007-06-07

The music is wonderful. The production is terrible!! The sound fades in and out and is very scratchy in some places.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent assortment.......2007-05-12

I'm not a big opera fan but I wanted to expose an assorted selection for my kids. This was perfect since it included several recognizable selections.

5 out of 5 stars Great Selections.......2007-03-31

This Cd, has the very best of Opera
covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

5 out of 5 stars Terrific !.......2007-01-10

A diverse album to give you a sprinkle of the various types of 'opera'. Every note is pure and lovely, I listen to it all the time ! Highly recommended for anyone just getting into opera. :}

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Gorgeous music, bad quality cd........2007-04-13

The music is Mozart's and is fantastic. The last piece on the first disc
stutters halfway through, and seizes up my system. I don't have time to return items to Amazon. On the positive side, most of the time Amazon provides quality products and service. I gave 3 stars because I love the music.

3 out of 5 stars Great music, low quality reproduction.......2007-01-30

this is a great collection of his work... the only problem i have found so far is that my copy has irritating "clicks" over the recording.

5 out of 5 stars A nice introduction.......2006-02-22

This is a good well rounded collection to dip you into the classical world of Mozart.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart is the reference point for good classical music........2005-10-20

A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.

"We exposed these animals [rats] in utero and then sixty days after birth to different types of auditory stimulation and then we ran them in a spatial maze. And sure enough, the animals that were exposed to the Mozart completed the maze faster and with fewer errors. And now what we're doing is we're removing their brains so we can slice them and see neuro-anatomically precisely what has changed as a function of this exposure. So it may be that this intense exposure to the music is a type of enrichment that has similar effects on the spatial areas of the hippocampus of the brain." --Dr. Frances Rauscher

Dr. Frances Rausher sums up what I feel happening when I expose myself to this incredible composer (Mozart).

I have yet to grow tired of any of the tracks yet, but I will invest in more of his work soon.

4 out of 5 stars Mozart's music.......2005-10-17

This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd. Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven. Mozart is just music. Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application. I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

4 out of 5 stars Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars like sparkling mineral water.......2006-12-22

It is something near to a cleansing experience to listen through the Mozart piano repertoire as performed by Daniel Barenboim.

For starters, Mozart achieves his sparest, cleanest, most limpid lines when writing for solo piano. Then comes Daniel Barenboim, whose reading of Mozart is crisply and unemotionally classical. Not for him the drawn-out keyboard soliloquy. On the contrary, Barenboim gives us Mozart, only Mozart, and nothing but Mozart, clean and shimmering as sparkling mineral water.

This is not to say that Barenboim as pianist is unfeeling. On the contrary, the Fantasia in C Minor - to choose just one example with almost random lack of care - is quite moving. But not with a flourish. Rather, with almost sinewy restraint. The presentation represents a fine grasp of the master composer, nurtured with discipline across the length and breadth of the voluminous sonatas.

Indeed, the sheer volume of the Mozart piano sonatas is intimidating. It is astonishing to imagine one man having mastered it as Barenboim has. EMI Classics has done us the favor of collecting these two gentlemen's asynchronic collaboration in one set, affordable at that.

If Mozart is a musician for the ages and Barenboim a performer who left a formidable imprint on the twentieth century, their collaboration as represented in these recordings is a watershed that will need to be referenced by students of classical piano for at least another hundred years, or until people can only remember as far back as the Dixie Chicks.

Buy Barenboim on Mozart before that happens, and so stick your thumb in the dike against the evil day.

1 out of 5 stars Soulless Rendition.......2005-10-16

I have several artists' renditions of Mozart's piano sonatas in my library. Daniel Barenboim's is the worst. His technique is timid. His rendition is soulless and perfunctory. I regret purchasing this collection. The best rendition I have is the collection of Glenn Gould. If you like Mozart's piano sonatas played the way Mozart intended, give Barenboim a pass and listen to Gould.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2005-03-17

As a pianist myself, I love Barenboim's playing. He does not play Mozart too Beethoven like. His performances are usually VERY good, and this is one example. Also includes the complete variations, which are very nice. The sound quality is excellent. Very highly recommended.

"The sonatas of Mozart are unique: too easy for children, too difficult for adults. Children are given Mozart to play because of the quantity of notes; grown ups avoid him because of the quality of notes." - Artur Schnabel

5 out of 5 stars Top notch performances.......2004-06-17

Daniel Barenboim played this whole set with an interesting approach to WAM . The notations about classical , beethovenian style are always hazardous.
When you are a musician you must avoid in the cliche , and you should feel the music as a whole and the playing must be the consequence of a overlong process that begins in your soul , then your inner mood , your intellect and finally your fingers. I remark the aspect when you are in front of Mozart, Beethoven Wagner, Bruckner, Bach , Schubert and Bartok , because these composers are in a highest level than the others and the music itself is merely a device for expressing deeper issues.
That's why this set is superb. Barenboim plays a Mozart rich in expresiveness , he gives to Mozart presence .
Barenboim plays music as Vegh or Furtwangler did it , always seeking the landscape far beyond the score . That's why they are so original in their performances . The rapture is not a device for exhibite his skills , it''s the final product of a long process.
Acquire this set. It's an unvaluable treasure.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but a bit misleading?.......2004-05-15

Barenboim playing Mozart has his critics, who say he's "too Beethovian" when performing Mozart's piano sonatas and piano concertos. I disagree; I love his style. Others might not.

My only complaint with this 8 CD set is that the advertised piano sonatas occupy the first 5 CDs; the last three are piano variations -- interesting, but not of the quality of the sonatas themselves. Surely a less-expensive 5-CD set, providing just the sonatas advertised in the title, would offer better value for money. On the other hand, 5 great CDs for $48 isn't a bad deal.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully sung, but undramatic.......2006-02-04

This version is extremely accurate in terms of singing and Edith Mathis' voice is one of the best I heard in my life, in fact, her singing is perfect in terms of accuracy.
Dietrich Fisher Dieskau's voice is characteristic of the well-trained german: powerful, vivid, dramatic.
Gundula Janowitz's voiceis also quite good, but not at the same level of the other singers.
In terms of beauty and melody, these singers have reached the top, however they aren't very dramatic, and they could improve quite a bit in that aspect.
On the whole, I'd say this is a very good interpretation, but not the best in the world, in fact I'd say that there isn't any, for every interpretation has one or two flaws. For those who like gorgeously melodious voices this is a must, but for those who tend to go for the dramatic side this is a maybe not, thus I 'm witholding my five and giving four stras to this recording.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Gorgeously Sung Figaro Of Them All.......2005-12-25

This recording is the recording used in the film Shashawnk Redemption (which has drawn tons of people to opera just upon hearing the "Letter" duet "Sull'aria" in one scene in the film). The recording used in the film is credited as the 1968 Karl Bohm edition starring Gundula Janowitz, Hermann Prey, Edith Mathis, Tatiana Troyanos and Dietrich Fischer Dieskau. The soprano voices of Gundula Janowitz and Edith Mathis is what we hear in the film. Many purists argue that the Bohm version is flawed and moreover un-Mozartian simply because the principal singers are German and have no command for the Italian diction so vital in an Italiante comedy like Figaro. But I much prefer the Karl Bohm version though this one is also quite beautiful. Edith Mathis has a lush, radiant soprano voice, with technically no flaw from a vocal point of view. Her particular Germanic school of opera was very handy in singing youthfully and beautifully, even if at the expense of dramatic development of character. As if she's the only one. Today's "gorgeous but un-dramatic" singers include Renee Fleming and even mezzo Denyce Graves. Soprano Gundula Janowitz sings with beautiful tone, but often with very little characterization. Her Countess is lovely but we rarely feel sympathetic for her role as the betrayed wife. She sings so beautifully we are certain the Count will return his former love for her. None of the singers are doing much of a dramatic job. Dieskau as the Count is a roaring lion of pride and masculine vanity and he is perhaps the only singer that is doing a great job here, despite detractors' comments. Herman Prey also does a superior job as Figaro, making him convincingly funny and witty and breathing a dimension of reality to his role.

THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY SUNG version but not the most dramatically satisfying. So it boils down to what your own tastes for opera are. Do you want to hear a gorgeously sung Figaro or a more lively, comedic, "acted-out" Figaro ? If it's the latter, then this recording is not for you. This is sheer beauty and Mozartian grace, worthy of being sung in the most Rococco of opera houses. I would have payed good money to hear these singers back in the late 60's, however I'm too young and never had the opportunity to hear them sing. The only old singer I've heard is Kiri Te Kenawa (and to some this singer is not that old). Te Kenawa is considered one of the great Countesses of this opera, as is Schwartzkopff in the Giulini recording and of course today's own Renee Fleming.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Figaro.......2005-12-22

Like the other reviewer mentions, this is the Le Nozze Di Figaro recording that is used in the movie "Shashawnk Redemption". I had a hard time figuring it out. I have always watched the film late at night and always miss the closing credits which credit the source for the "Letter Aria" or "Sul Soave Zefferito" sung by two sopranos the Countess and Susannah her maid. In Redemption, our innocent hero Mr. Dufresne puts on this recording which has been digitally remastered and stars Gundula Janowitz as the Countess, Edith Mathis as Susannah, Herman Prey as Figaro, Dietrich Fischer Dieskau as the Count and Tatiano Troyanos as Cherubino. True, this recording has been highly criticized as faulty by many blase critics. In opera, one discovers very picky people. But to my knowledge, no opera has ever been perfect. This recording is absolutely beautiful. Karl Bohm, a popular Bayreuth conductor, uncovers the lush musical beauty of the score. All the singers live their roles and sing with both beauty and dramatic integrity.

The soprano voices of Edith Mathis and Gundula Janowitz is what we hear in Shashawnk. They are not "Italian ladies" like Dufresne says. They are both German sopranos. Edith Mathis as Susannah is radiant, perky, pretty. Her voice is crystalline and angelic. Gundula Janowitz makes a very elegant and feminine Countess, with none of the maturity and age that Schwartzkopff gave to her. Janowitz always sounded "young". Dietrich Discher Fieskau as the Count is terrific. He sang a lot of Italian roles for baritone/bass, though he was primarily a German Lieder and opera specialist. However, his Italian is excellent. His command of the role is superb. He makes him an overblown egoist and it works. Hermann Prey as Figaro is perfect. He sings with intelligence, charisma and Mozartian talent. Karl Bohm conducts the Berlin State Opera with virtuosity. I have nothing more to say. This is the one and only Figaro. Of course, if you are not satisfied, oh blase ones, try other alternatives to this one such as the Giuseppe Taddei, Elisabeth Schwartzkopf and Anna Moffo recording or the one with Sena Jurinac.

2 out of 5 stars Too slow!.......2005-11-03

I suggest that anyone looking for an ideal first recording to have read my review, because I've put a lot of research into the various Figaro recordings. And I was once in that exact same spot: which recording is best? I didn't want to buy every single one! I'm reviewing, in fact, to impart what I've learned from this unto someone else, so that they won't have to spend so much money searching for that perfect recording.

Anyway, my friend and I had fallen in love with this opera not too long ago. Back then, I was under the impression that, like most things, there would be an ideal standard. Well, it wasn't that easy. We discovered that looking for the best Figaro recording is very, very, difficult. Every good review is countered by a bad one. We read all reader reviews, professional reviews, and listened to previews. Eventually, between the two of us, we got: this one (Bohm,) Giulini, and Jacobs (I also intend on buying Kleiber sometime in the future, but the Figaro is much too dark for my liking.)

I don't quite know how to say this nicely... I do NOT like Bohm's. Why? Because it's so darn slow! Listening to it, you just think "This is an Italian comic opera, not a requiem mass!" It's honestly plodding. Pieces that are supposed to be almost thrillingly fast, like "Tutto e disposto," and "Aprite, presto, aprite" are sung fast, but the orchestration does not seem to keep up. In fact, in the former it sounded like poor Hermann Prey was struggling with trying to keep so slow. Slower, prettier pieces like "Sull'aria" and "Giunse alfin il momento... Deh vieni, non tardar" are downright plodding.

Now, it's certainly pretty. I'd bet that's why "Shawshank Redemption" used the Bohm version of "Sull'aria"--it's very, very pretty. But IMO it does not keep with the spirit of the opera. It's light. It's happy. It's not Puccini or Verdi or something.

The singing is, of course, fantastic. I wish that I could hear Hermann Prey on another recording which has a faster tempo, because I bet that he would wow me and could possibly even become one of my favorite Figaros. He shows a great amount of character, which I love--to me, Figaro is all about the personality coming through. Too bad, like I said, that he is featured on a recording which has conducting that does not allow him to truly shine.

I would not recommend this for a first recording. It is not something that someone unfamiliar with the opera should get. I would wait until one has a good primary recording and/or is familiar with the opera. The entire thing is worth listening to, I just wouldn't recommend owning it for that CD you pop in when you want to listen to the opera. But, there are certain parts that are great. It's good ear-candy, and I'm sure that one would find it the most amazing thing ever if not familiar with the opera... but those who are probably will find the conducting incredibly unfitting. It just doesn't match the opera. Even the unhappy moments should have energy. If "Porgi, amor" is too slow, for example, it will just drag on and on forever.

Also, the recits before arias are split into different tracks, which can get really annoying.

Anyway, what recording would I recommend for a first copy? Rene Jacobs, definitely. If one finds the conducting on that one too fast, then Giulini. Giulini is a happy medium between the two conducting, even though I found the recits ridiculously fast and hard to understand. But, hey, this isn't a review of Giulini's. So, yes, I suggest Jacobs for people who just want one good, solid recording to appease those Figaro cravings. Or a first recording for Figaro nerds like myself. Bohm should be something that is second or third.

So, yes. I don't recommend this for a primary album, because I just cannot stand the conducting. Obviously, there are people who disagree (this recording is pretty legendary.) But, this is what I've found, myself.

5 out of 5 stars (~~)==++ JULIA FISCHER: simply TREMENDOUS - a very RFRESHING new RECORDING by this very young Violinist!.......2007-02-15

SEVEN STARS******* for the woman who releases a new CD almost every two months!

Right during "Mozart Year" 2006 a recording of Mozart works for violin - of all of his violin concertos on two CDs - was released by this very young and already fully established 1. Class Violinist. The release of these concertos of this tremendous quality shows or reveals JULIA FISCHER completely naturally and self-confident, and she proves to be a virtuoso, whose place is in the "thin air" of the violinistical "first league", who stands not only right by the side of but ahead of other well-established and outstanding violinists, and beyond that she belongs to the BEST OF THE VERY BEST VIOLINISTS THROUGHOUT THE WOLRD!

Julia Fischer plays her violin highly accurately and her intonation is completely clean (just as we have become accustomed to!) and she always produces a rather slightly and elegantly formed vibrato than to make it to pulsate extremely excessively; she is so certain about what she does when she is playing her violin and, to our great delight, she avoides "colouring" each note excessively and to form them in an overemphasised expressiveness and intensity, and this way she avoids unnecessary vibrato in general. HER ACOUSTIC "COLOURS" are discreet and VERY SPLENDID and of MUCH BRIGHTNESS as well as EXPRESSIVNESS, and they are much right to the point in each phrasing; JULIA FISCHER's TECHNICAL CONTROL and INTERPRETATION of THESE PIECES, as well as of PIECES BY OTHER COMPOSERS, are so PURE and HIGHLY PERFECT! This makes JULIA a TRUE and VERY FINE YOUNG MASTRESS OF the VIOLIN! This is a GRAND PLUS FOR HER, and her TECHNICAL CONTROL and INTERPRETATION of pieces for violin is GENERALLY TRUE FOR this WONDERFUL YOUNG VIOLINIST JULIA FISCHER. This is one more reason to ADMIRE HER SO MUCH!

There is one more ability, which makes me appreciate her and which makes JULIA even more admirable for me, that is the fact that SHE w r o t e / c o m p o s e d HER O W N and very beautifully created cadenzas for the five of Mozart's violin concertos - even at this very young age SHE "CADENCES" HERSELF! JULIA, I BOW FOR YOU for this! This way you I N S P I R E N E W L I F E INTO MOZART's violin works - and in particular into those "antiquated" (fusty!) old cadenzas which can be heard thousands of times from numerous other recordings of the same pieces... and which, therefore, have become known to everyone well enough and which we have so by now become a bit "tired" of (bored with!)..... (I do not mind those "old" cadenzas when they are performed/played by other virtuosos with much heart and soul as well as with much technical competence - but a few NEW, "REFRESHING" CADENZAS every now and then would be VERY WELL INTRODUCED into VIOLIN LITERATURE and SERVE us with a FRESH BREEZE of NEW MUSICALITY! THIS BREEZE now brings us to our great delight --- thanks to her musical capability and skills as well as thanks to her CLEAR and WELL-DEFINED UNDERSTANDING of MUSICAL CONTEXTS and thanks to the extraordinary and superior control of her instrument --- JULIA FISCHER!). Julia shows us that CLASSICAL MUSIC NOT ONLY lives from NEW INTERPRETATIONS or ideas, which refer to these, made by virtuosos, BUT can be VITALISED also BY INTRODUCING IDEAS OF COMPOSITION which are MADE BY CADENZAS CREATED BY VIRTUOSOS THEMSELVES!

Another, a third reason to name these recordings by Julia Fischer (one of) my absolutely favourite recordings is that somebody had the courage - much in Bach and Vivaldi style! - to use a HARPSICHORD AS ACCOMPANIMENT for the orchestral background. MOZART would be MUCH CHARMED and DELIGHTED about this really great accompaniment of his first two violin concertos, both of which were recorded with harpsichord accompaniment, through which these get a FRESH BREEZE of NEW MUSICALITY. This NEW FRESH BREEZE, in some passages, reminds me of Bach's and Vivaldi's violin concertos (maybe it reminds me a bit of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons"); the harpsichord in the orchestral background kind of slightly and discreetly eases the musical structure of these pieces. And Julia Fischer does not "seize" these concertos but plays as a perfectly matched partner of the orchestra and the conductor Yakov Kreizberg (who seems to be her preferred conductor)! JULIA, that's BEAUTIFUL! ASTONISHING!!!

So, the FRESHNESS and LIVELINESS OF THESE NEW RECORDINGS of the MOZART VIOLIN CONCERTOS REMIND me very strongly of JULIA FISCHER's SUPERB RECORDING of "THE FOUR SEASONS" which she made a view years ago and which was released on DVD; both her recordings of Vivaldi as well as of Mozart are for the same reasons HIGHLY REMARKABLE as well as RECOMMENDABLE, in particular, since there are also thousands of recordings of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" whose interpretations are, as I see it, "antiquated" (fusty!) and by which one gets bored or feels tired from. So, some years ago, JULIA FISCHER succeeded also in BREEZING NEW and FRESH MUSICALITY into ANTONIO VIVALDI's "THE FOUR SEASONS"! Among many other recordings by Julia Fischer, there is one particular recording by her which I would like to mention on this occasion and which can be heard in the same high quality only rarely from other violin virtuosos in a comparable quality. It is the recording of the RUSSIAN VIOLIN CONCERTO by ARAM KHACHATURIAN which belongs to my personal favourites made by Julia (and certainly it belongs to Julia's favourite concertos), because it brings so much warmth and musical depth into with the beautifulness of her violin play. And also some years ago, again really early in her career, she recorded the BACH SOLO SONATAS and PARTITAS as TERRIFICALLY as BRILLIANTLY - I BOW TO YOU AGAIN!! So much bowing...

Not only because of JULIA FISCHER's OUTSTANDING VIOLIN PLAY but also because of the use of the HARPSICHORD AS ACCOMPANIMENT of the FIRST TWO of MOZART's VIOLIN CONCERTOS --- and F I R S T O F A L L because of the CADENZAS W R I T T E N AND C R E A T E D BY JULIA FISCHER H E R S E L F ! --- I would (if possible!) give AT LEAST SEVEN or MORE STARS for these REFERENCIAL RECORDINGS! ALWAYS KEEP GOING JULIA!! And PLEASE ALSO KEEP COMPOSING FURTHER CADENZAS, please also for those concertos by other composers!

5 out of 5 stars CD: Julia Fischer: Mozart Violin Concertos.......2007-05-07

In March I heard Julia Fischer playing Khachaturian's violin concerto at a concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. She is such a wonderful violinist that soon after I got home I checked what other performance of hers would be available from Amazon. When I saw this CD I promptly ordered it. I was not disappointed: She plays these concertos better than anyone I ever heard. She combines deep feeling with perfect virtuosity in this performance. I recommend this CD to everybody who likes Mozart or violin!

5 out of 5 stars big and luminous........2006-06-11

What makes SACD with music is to 1.improve great details or 2. Make mistakes sound even worse. In this ocation the first exception makes the rule. Later cadenzas give something different and at the same time, peerless jewels to enjoy in this immortal pieces.

5 out of 5 stars More Quality Classical Music Listening.......2006-04-08

I do not claim to be an expert in classical music but I do enjoy listening to good classical music often. This recording of Mozart Violin Concertos is one that I have enjoyed listening too over and over. I would not hesitate recommending it to anyone who enjoys classical music that highlights the romantic violin.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding and moving performance.......2005-12-08

Julia Fischer doesn't just turn in an easy-listening Mozart; she gives us a rare and moving performance. The cadenzas will melt your soul as will the Adagio movement of Concerto #3 in G. The fact that she wrote 5 of the candenzas and augmented the 6th shows that she has stunning self confidence and poise. The same could be said for someone who records Bach's Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin at her young age. But I say if you've got the talent, flaunt it. And she has it in spades. If you take a listen to the three recordings she has out on Pentatone at the moment, (The present work, Bach's Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin, and Russian violin concertos by Aram Khachaturian, Serge Prokofiev and Alexander Glazunov) you will immediately perceive her extraordinary versitility in these widely different idioms, and the commitment and talent she brings to each of these (normally) duanting undertakings.

You will not regret this purchase. I certainly plan to buy anything with her name on it for some time to come.

5 out of 5 stars I got it for the same reason...........2006-03-07

as many of the others...because that one song that echoed over the courtyard of Shawshank Prison grabbed me. So, I looked in the credits and discovered this. OK, so it's just the highlights, but it's an AMAZING album from start to finish. Presented with passion, humanity, and sometimes even humor. Sometimes opera will drive me up the wall when I don't like one of the singer's voices, but this one has a wonderful collection of talent, and is very easy to listen to.

    4 out of 5 stars Where's the full-length version?.......2003-05-03

I have both the highlights and the full recording of this version of Figaro. For some reason, though, Amazon doesn't seem to carry the full version, which is too bad. This is one of the few operas I actually think needs the recitiatives.
Anyway, so since the acting doesn't matter too much on a highlights version I won't get into that. The singing is very good, in fact I think it's probably the best version of Figaro out there. The only exception is in regards to Gundula Janowitz's performance of Dove Sono, which seems to be very ill-suited to her voice. The rest of her part is done beautifully. I also think it's sad that Marcellina's aria was left off, since that is always one of my favorite songs and I will never intentionally buy a recording where it has not been included, but due to how frequently it gets cut, I am not surprised.
Anyway, I recommend the highlights version if you are after something you can listen to in the car and don't want to bother with a full three disc set. For all other purposes I would advise you to track down the full-length recording, which is definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars "Che belle voci!".......2002-06-26

This recording is fantastic. Bohm is a lively, exciting conductor who can also make one wet-eyed in the final scene. Prey has the perfect blend of mischievousness and richness of sound for Figaro's character, and he is well-matched by Edith Mathis as Susanna who is delightful and full-voiced. Gundola Janowitz as the Countess is also amazing, and her "Dove sono" is really moving. Fischer-Dieskau is a powerful Count, too. Troyanos (Cherubino) is beyond praise and her "Voi che sapete" ranks with Frederica von Stade. The sound quality is crisp and clear, and the selections are good, though I wish the sextet "Riconosci in questo amplesso" was included. In all, great!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Great opera.......2001-08-18

The Marriage of Figaro is arguably one of the best operas ever developed, and it's great to know that this cd contains the best songs from the fabulous opera. The orchestra, along with the singers, give a grand performance of high caliber. If you enjoy classical music, then this will make a magnificent addition to your musical collection.

    5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2000-12-30

After watching Shawshank Redemption I looked everwhere for this recording. This is some of the most emotionaly moving pieces of music I have ever heard. Im a 17 year old guy in a punk rock band, and I cried probably the hardest Ive ever cried in my life when listening to the duettino sull aria. Its one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my entire life. I cant imagine not having it.

Piano playing of extraordinary romantic depth and breadth. Bolet is inside Liszt's mind, as Liszt's romantic self unfolds on the keyboard. It is as if Bolet is the master himself. Superlative recordings to boot!

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of Liszt treasures.......2004-01-12

The booklet of this set has an interesting explanation of why Jorge Bolet stayed out of the spotlights for so long before taking up his -glorious- career. It was his devotion to Liszt. By then, in the 1950s, Liszt was still regarded as a B-composer (There are still people who tend to think so: I read someone who called Liszt `the father of all bar pianists'. Now, if you know a worse offence...). Only after Liszt's reputation had increased, Bolet could enter his `Indian summer', which lasted from about 1975 until his passing away in 1990. During this period, he was finally able to perform his favourite music as much as possible. This fine 9-disc set may indeed be Bolet's most important testament. Additionally, it's one of the most important Liszt collections on the market. But beware: there's much more than just Bolet, considering Liszt's piano works. I can't say this is the perfect set or near it. Still five stars, for some astonishing piano playing that we don't come across very often nowadays.

Bolet won a Gramophone Award for his 1st book of Années de Pelerinage, which is not strange when listening to the recordings. This is a portrait of a man who's entirely on his own, looking for his soul while wandering trough the beautiful Switzerland - I can't say it better than B. Johnson already did. It's Romantic nonsense, of course, but in Liszt's days it was a common idea, and it can still sweep me away. Bolet's superior tonal colouring - beautiful, but not too far-driven, for the risk it would almost be too intimidating - and his peaceful nature lift this music to the greatest heights. My only complaint would be the `Orage' piece: Bolet's technique can't quite handle it, and its aggressive nature is much less overwhelming as a result. Nevertheless, the rest of the pieces show him at his very best. So does the second year of the Années (that is oddly placed in the set before the first year by Decca). The Dante Sonata, one of Liszt's greatest pieces, fares very well under Bolet's hands.

Equally excellent were the Schubert Song Transcriptions. The transcriptions aren't very different from the original songs, but they are definitely interesting. Especially when someone like Bolet takes them under his hands! All songs are terrifically played, with real standouts like `Auf dem Wasser zu singen', `Der Mueller und der Bach' and `Erlkoenig'. Bolet's romantic touch (he may have been the last of his kind) lets the music unendingly flow. Brilliant!

These comments also apply to Liszt's Consolations, which are placed on another disc. Liszt shows here how much he's in debt to Schubert, and wrote music of a disarmingly lyrical nature. Bolet gives almost naively innocent readings of these pieces. Talking about singing music, why not include the Liebesträume, `Venezia e Napoli' and many, many other pieces as well. Although some people still regard Liszt as a bombastic composer, he was in fact much more active on the spiritual and lyrical area. It is largely this nature of Liszt that is put into the spotlights by Bolet. He is really terrific whenever music ought to sound peaceful and meditative.

But Liszt was also a stunning virtuoso. People may eschew him for that, but that's often without any good ground. The B minor Sonata and the Transcendental Etudes, to give some names, are not only pianistically but also musically amazing works. It takes to be both a good technician and a musician to play them well, and this is where Bolet occasionally fails. He was over 65 when he made these recordings, and I can't help but say that his technique was not anymore what it used to be. In many pieces you can hear him struggle.

In what may be the most difficult music Liszt wrote, the Transcendental Etudes, Bolet takes tempi that are almost too easy (e.g. no.10 should be `Allegro molto agitato' but Bolet plays it very moderately), perhaps because his technique was by then too limited to give the pieces a really impressive treatment. Even then, I do feel a ertain nobility in Bolet's slow approach that gives every study a dignified stature (and that's something you won't find with Kissin or Cziffra!). The sonata is similarly noble and yet tremendously powerful in its scope, even though Bolet may lack some technial control at isolated spots.

Anoter treacherous piece is the `Reminiscences de Don Juan', which is a transcription of no less an opera than -of course- Don Giovanni! Bolet plays this 20-minute piece with a lot of humour and swing: it's a great way to clean up your mind! Also recommendable are the Etudes de Concert (e.g. Waldesrauschen), whose light spirit is very well captured.

A treasure trove set overall, I can recommend it without any limitations. There's no other composer that suited Bolet as well as Liszt, and the vice versa may be true as well. But the pianist also has his weaker points, particularly regarding his technique, that wasn't what it used to be. Oh, and the piano sound is not always equally convincing: the instrument sounds a little shrill at times. But there's an amazing amount of colour in the instrument, and it allows Bolet to reachfor the deepest, darkest sonorities you've heard. This collection is therefore not just THE best Liszt: there are many more pianists who made supreme recordings of him (e.g. Arrau, Brendel, Richter) and I definitely recommend searching them out as well. After you've heard this!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of Liszt interpretations........2003-12-03

I was very impressed with Bolet's playing. His rendition of La Campanella is the best I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Liszt for the ages........2001-12-05

Both for those that would like to find out for the first time what Liszt is all about, and for those few that are very familiar with the Paganini of the 88: LOOK NO FURTHER!

It doesn't get any better than this.

After I heard throughout the seventies about this "unknown" great of the romantic repertoire, I was fortunate enough to see him for the first time about a month after he recorded the first issue of this now legendary Liszt series. While his technique may not have exactly been what it used to be before (e.g. Orage in Suisse of Les Annees), all the performances benefit from the wisdom of many, many years. While all the performances are of a uniform Olympic level, two issue stand out in my mind.

First, there is the cd of Schubert Liszt transcriptions. Bolet really sets the standards for "singing" on the piano. His version of "Der Muller und der Bach" has to be believed to be heard.

Most importantly though, there is "Suisse" the first year of Liszt's years of pilgrimage. I own this disc from the day it appeared on the shelves and still listen to it every month. Surely, there are more technically brilliant versions. For the true "Liszt Nuts", I would certainly advise Leslie Howard's version of "L'Album d'un voyageur", that contains the first version of many of the "Suisse" pieces, and some additional pieces that Frenz (for reasons that escape me completely) excluded from the later Suisse. Yet, nobody, not even Brendel or Berman, have come close to Bolet on delivering on the central theme of Suisse, man finding himself back in an exploration of nature.

While they stem from the earlier days of digital recording the recordings are still more than respectable and benefit greatly from Bolet's attention for color, aided by his favorite Bechstein.

Many of these recordings have not been available for a while. Get them before they're history!
