Variations in the grand style.......2005-08-21

Isolfsson's Piano Variations are a wonderful set of 20th century piano variations, thoroughly diatonic and consonant but not at all conventional or cliched, in the grand style of Beethoven's Eroica and Diabelli Variations. There is something fresh, captivating, forceful, imaginative, and tender about them. They are a bit like a mixture of Beethoven and Gottschalk with a 20th-century Nordic spin on them. If you like the theme and variations form and some of the great classics in this tradition, e.g. the abovementioned Beethoven works, Brahms's Haydn Variations, etc., you will probably enjoy this piece.
