4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Schuetz.......2004-06-03

This recording is a good introduction to the work of Heinrich Schuetz. The excerpts from Psalmen Davids are well-chosen examples of his work. Summerly and his group perform the works gracefully and intimately. The inclusion of Schein's organ pieces is a plus since it cuts the monotony of motet after motet. If you have never heard Schuetz's lovely music, this is a good place to start. My favorite piece on the disc is "Erhoere mich", a duet for two sopranos and continuo. The sopranos, Carys Anne Lane and Rebecca Outram have remarkably clear and vibratoless voices. They blend very well together and with the organ continuo. I also enjoy listening to "Singet dem Herr ein neues Lied." This recording made me want to listen to more Schuetz. At this price, you don't want to pass up this recording.

3 out of 5 stars why?.......2003-04-07

Why didn't Summerly record all 26 psalms? the work is far from being satisfied!!!

2 out of 5 stars Schutz as He Never Intended.......2000-03-18

From a strictly vocal perspective, this recording is perfectly fine. I bought it with the sumptuous sonorities of Venice in mind, however, which is what Schutz had in mind when he wrote the Psalmen Davids. What Summerly delivers is a minimalist version where the instrumental accompaniment is limited to a continuo organ which cannot possibly supply the added dimensions Schutz intended to incorporate through the use of instrumental parts. For those who want to hear the legacy of Schutz' experience in Venice with Gabrieli in these wonderful works, they would do well to look to another recording, perhaps the version done by Musica Fiata.

3 out of 5 stars One of the best Schutz anthologies on disc........1998-09-16

Apart from being well performed this is also a well thought out selection. Half the tracks on this CD, 6 out of 12, are taken from Schutz' 1619 Opus "Psalms of David", large-scale polychoral settings following his teacher Gabrieli's model. They are performed sensitively here and counterposed with lighter works (such as the soprano duet "Erhore mich wenn ich rufe" and the bass solo "Ich liege und schlafe", both taken from the Kleine Geistliche Konzerte II of 1639). The program concludes with Schutz' graveside memorial motet to his friend Schein framed with a couple of Schein's pavans on either side, and then the final Magnificat from his own swansong opus. 64'08" playing time, full texts and translations. And all this at a sub-budget price.

it's just that the vibrato of the counter tenor drives me nuts but if you don't mind vibrato you will like it. Nothing terribly interesting in terms of performance but there is no Schwanengesang CDs available as long as I know, you have no choice.

4 out of 5 stars Mauersberger good as always.......1999-06-28

Rudolf Mauersberger always does well with Heinrich Schütz, at least if you listen to it from a perspective of Lutheran worship. Those who call for more "Weihnachtsmusic" would do well to research the seasons of the liturgical church more closely. A substantial part of the CD is devoted to Advent music (the 4 weeks before Christmas emphasizing the preparation of our hearts for the Savior). The Advent section also has 2 settings of the Magnificat (often associated with Christmas), one in Latin and one in German. The two things I would want Berlin Classics to do is less duplication as well as having the English translation (which would enable me to recommend it to my friends who do not understand German).

2 out of 5 stars Better modern recordings available.......1998-10-02

Mauersberger (d. 1971) was a great advocate of Schutz' music and it is interesting to listen to this pre-authentic performance style to compare with the more recent Cordes (CPO) and Hennig (EMI) versions of Schutz Opus 11 - both of which have the advantage of digital sound, as well as completeness (2CD). The title "weihnachtliche" on the CD is a bit of a marketing ploy, although at least "Ein Kind ist uns geboren" has a Christmas theme. If you want Christmas music pick up the Parrott, Bernius or Summerly versions of Schutz' Christmas Story.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent expression of faith.......1999-04-10

A fan in London rates this recording as "long in the tooth", which I consider unfortunate. This highlights the differences between those on one side who emphasize the style period versus those of us who emphasize other elements and view the style period as a lesser element. Mauersberger imparts to this recording a sense of strength essential to good German music sometimes lacking in "authentic" performances, and also captures the beauty and expressiveness that are part of the Lutheran worship. As always, Mauersberger makes the biblical texts come alive, which is consistent with the Lutheran emphasis on hearing the word ("ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben" "Strafe mich nicht"). Mauersberger also gives an element to Schütz that most others would be hard-pressed to match of having a solid faith to carry on through major upheavals (Schütz the 30 Years War; Mauersberger the Nazis, WW2 and then the Communists). I usually do not care for boy choirs since they cannot do many things adult voices can, but the fact that I can listen to and enjoy the Dresden Kreuzchor all day says something quite important. If you want a performance that emphasizes period practices, you might want to consider another recording, but if you want an expression of worship in the Lutheran church, you would be hard-pressed to beat Mauersberger and the Dresden Kreuzchor. I hope Berlin Classics keeps releasing more of these. My only regret on this recording (as well as others of Schütz by Mauersberger) is that Berlin Classics does offer an English translation, which makes it harder for me to recommend it for my friends who don't know German

1 out of 5 stars Getting a bit long in the tooth.......1998-09-16

I hate to give only one star to a recording that in its day was something special, and Berlin Classics are doing us all a favour in digitally remastering Mauersberger's Schutz. For example the only readily available version of the St. Luke Passion is Mauersberger's 1968 recording with Peter Schreier as the Evangelist and Theo Adam as Jesus (BC 0092072). But even at mid-price there is little reason to get excited about another reissued selection from Psalms of David. Summerly's excellent 1995 super-budget recording on Naxos (8.553044), or Bernius' complete set on DHM, and no doubt the forthcoming Junghanel set as well, are all a better way to get to know Schutz' most famous opus.
