Still, since it's on Ground Fault, I picked up Sporadic Spectra. Erik's unbridled recommendation ("Series III? It's almost Series IV!") helped somewhat with this decision, as did the staggeringly cheap cost of Ground Fault material. And more fool me, because Sporadic Spectra is the loudest, harshest, and most interesting disc to hit my player since Merzbow's much-vaunted Venereology CD came out almost six years ago.

Using things that sound like everything from a car alarm to a Heathkit 200-in-1 machine to create the chaotic mass of rhythmic noise in the background (and a loud one it is), Yasutoshi Yoshida then overlays it with his trademark hair-metal guitar solos. However, on this release he's a lot tighter and more minimal than usual, working more with controlled feedback and single-bent-note constructions than the finger-flying Ediie-Van-Halenesque stuff that (dis)graced his live performance. And it just keeps coming at you for a solid hour, with one three-second exception between "Scintillant Tender Green" and "Cryptic Cave" where he must have stopped to get a second wind after jumping off every possible ledge he could find in the studio. (Seriously, this guy's in the air almost as much as M.A.S.O.N.N.A. was.)

This is a fine, fine release. Add yet another to the stable of Ground Fault releases that made 1999 one of the strongest years to date in noise.
