It's hardly a stretch to say that Antonio Carlos Jobim--the wonderful Brazilian composer almost single-handedly responsible for all things bossa nova--influenced some of past half century's best and most insipid musics, from bossa nova jazz to elevator Muzak. Wave, a collection of 1967 dates featuring keyboardist Jobim backed by an extensive orchestra, straddles that line: it's full of amazing original compositions, but the arrangements have a certain faux suave, late-'60s lounge feel that reeks of stale cheese. The result is actually great, the veneer of kitsch insidiously masking Jobim's trademark immeasurable sadness, which creeps up on you and leaves you unexpectedly affected. --Keven McAlester
Customer Reviews:
Bossa Nova.......2007-03-29
I like Bossa Nova, beautiful music, and I like all the cd's I have purchased
Timeless.......2007-02-11
As for the Amazon editor reviewer, I cannot imagine what kind of dead soul would say that these arrangements approach stale cheese. I pity people who cannot find their feelings under the weight of their infotainmentized pseudo-intellect. It's a gorgous piece of work, Ogerman's orchestrations and all, and if it approaches kitsch, well, that would only be true for minds who grew up having second-hand lives and experiences from growing up on TV and 'simulated living' - that pitiful Tarantino crowd of arrmchair weasel critics. It's true that Jobim had some less than stellar albums, but this was not one of them. Stick that up your Sunporch Cha-Cha-Cha.
Not what I was after.......2007-01-15
Was looking for that warm samba/bahia/bossa sound and what I got here was dangerously close to elevator music. Maybe really high quality elevator music, but nevertheless. This guy is acknowledged as a master, and I have no doubt he is, but this flavor is sooooo smooth that it feels more like lawrence welk.
Eternal.......2007-01-11
Eternal in beauty, in refined arrangements, in smoothness, perfect for a erotico- romantic night.
perfection.......2006-09-03
This is Jobim's finest album, although Stone Flower and Tide are certainly worth checking out. The songwriting on this album is sublime, the arrangements are brilliant and the execution is flawless. The melodies are minimal, yet strikingly elegant: they are small but very effective, impressionistic tone poems, each exquisite in its own right.
There doesn't seem to be a single misplaced or extraneous note on this entire album--it is as close to perfection as anything I've heard. Wave is really a beautifully crafted album in every detail. I can't praise this album enough. Listen to this.

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
pure genius.......2007-05-21
No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection
Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15
The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.
first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12
the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.
Encore.......2007-03-31
Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.
The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29
I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

Amazon.com essential recording
Multitalented Brazilian musician Jobim's talent was revealed to a larger world in 1959 by his and Luis Bonfa's score for the film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) in 1959. Songs such as "A Felicidade" and "Desafinado" generated the bossa nova movement of the early '60s that inspired the likes of Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, and Miles Davis. This 1967 album features Jobim sharing vocals with Sinatra on "The Girl from Ipanema" and "How Insensitive." Three standards--"Change Partners" by Irving Berlin; "I Concentrate on You" by Cole Porter; and Robert Wright, George Forrest, and Alexander Borodin's "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads"--round out the program of seven Jobim tunes. This is a lovely taste of Latin melody and rhythm from two masters of relaxed swing. --Stanley Booth
Customer Reviews:
A perfect album for late night listening.......2007-01-02
I love to put this album on late at night when all the world is asleep and I am up alone. The impeccable artistry of this record was made possible by a magnificent collaboration. Sinatra and Jobim came together for this 1967 record and produced a uniquely peaceful and even philosophical release. The peaceful quality in in the compositions, the relaxed orchestration, and, of course, Frank's assured vocals. This might be his greatest vocal performance: I know that is making quite a claim, but listen to this music. Frank's voice is soft, but still strong. He sings the songs quietly, but he imbues the songs with real feeling: his vocals on this release sound wise to me. Sinatra's performance touches on issues of love, romance, all the typical topics, but his performance is just so deep that I can only describe it as being philosophical. Frank is feeling, and thinking, and mediating in these perfect little songs and he communicates this depth to the listener. He is right there with you as you give this music the attention it deserves. I can think of no better musical companion deep in the solitary night.
Sit back and enjoy a softer side of Sinatra.......2006-11-15
One of the quietest and romantic Sinatra albums. Sinatra sings softly here, softer than he had ever sung before. The softness in his voice on the album also hides some of the wear his voice has endured. Sinatra once said that if he sang any softer on this album, he'd have to be laying flat on his back. I don't think anyone could sing any softer than he has on these recordings.
Listen to this album when you want to relax, and have a change of pace from the typical swingin' Sinatra. There are many sides of Sinatra, and this is another. Sit back and enjoy.
Subtle but swinging.......2006-10-23
Amazing music; never have I heard Sinatra singing with such subtlety, never have I sensed so much swing in his singing, and yet this is far les "swing"-oriented album than many others from this era.
Collaboration with A. C. Jobim is not something I would expect to work so well since it was recorded in the era when Sinatra was mostly about more extrovert, self-confidently "macho" renditions of often cynical songs. The magic that is Jobim somehow managed to inspire this intriguing merging of worlds and styles and it is quite difficult for me to pick a favorite tune from this brilliant album.
A remarkable collaboration.......2006-10-19
Ten songs, ten perfect reasons to love this work. Each gentleman obviously had a fecund career of his own; yet, this effort represents a singular achievement in its own right. Too often when two legends come together they remain too much within their own realms of comfort (or ego) to make the effort genuinely worthwhile. Not so here. Both were willing to make concessions, forfeit a little of his own persona and adopt some of the other's in order to create a unique and extraordinary album. In fact, there are a couple instances it is difficult which one is singing, so seamless is their melding. Sinatra is at his sweetest and most plaintive. Jobim eases into American popular music effortlessly. The gorgeous orchestration by Claus Olgerman pulls together the production superbly. The result is a masterwork that sounds like neither a typical Sinatra album nor a typical Jobim album. The fifth track, "Meditation," summarizes these songs rather well: put on the CD, relax and lose yourself in this one.
Sinatra at his best.......2006-08-07
This is great music sung by a great voice in his prime. It is soft, yet very sensual music. Sinatra and Jobim are quite a pairing!

A Classic, But..........2007-05-16
At the risk of being accused of massive heresy, I'd like to point out a few things that the potential buyer should be aware of: 1) if you're of a certain generation(younger than say, 40)and aren't accustomed to hearing sacharrine-like string arrangements then there will be about 4 or 5 slow orchestra + singer tracks(non-bossa) on this album that will drive you nuts and distract from Elis's amazing voice. For example, if you get the chance, listen to the version of "Modinha" on this CD vs. the version with just Elis and Cesar on piano in the Elis DVD. I always skipped this song on the CD and now I'm realizing how sad it is that it was orchestrated...Good heavens just get out of the lady's way and let her sing. This song sounds so much better 'unplugged'! I bet the same would happen with the other tracks. It sounds a bit pretentious since the strings are not needed to make Elis 'better', due to the inherent greatness of the songs...thus, sublime songwriting by Jobim...but he should've nixed the 'ambitious' arrangements! Btw, I also dislike the version of Corcovado here...and I'm not so sure it's the definitive vocal version...I think that honor should go to Joao Gilberto...and once again, I bet if Elis has/had an unplugged version, it probably would be the among the best. Anyhow, just a controversial opinion of mine. I'm sure many disagree!
2)Many are calling this a quintessential bossa album...but nearly half the tracks are not bossa nova but modinhas...slow-tempo dramatic songs that may sound a bit 'over-the-top' to modern ears.
3)This is not my favorite singing by Elis...for my taste she is too polished and restrained on a few of the songs here(with some very notable exceptions such as Aguas de Marco)...although her singing is indeed flawless and unmatched. Call me crazy, I'd much rather hear the relaxed, soulful, or fun Elis in "Como Os Nossos Pais", "Upa Neguinho", or "Sou Caipira Pira Pora Nossa"(not sure about the title), or "Alo, Alo Marciano". At any rate, Elis was soooo much more than a bossa nova or jazz singer. She was and could be anything!
Now, as for the priceless songs...these are the ones that I pick as my faves on this CD:
1) Aguas de Marco (btw, the end part, in which Elis starts laughing is I think due to the fact that, based on my limited understanding of Portuguese, Elis and Tom start chopping off the first letter of each word starting the refrain phrases...it's onderful!)
2) Triste: So sexy...tua beleza e' um aviao, Elis!
3) Retrato em Branco e Preto- Just amazing! The strings aren't as obnoxious here, either.
4) Fotografia: brilliant!
5) Chovendo na Roseira: One of my favorite songs ever!
6) Inutil Paisagem: Great song for when you're feeling depressed...very cathartic!
Magnificient.......2007-01-10
Wonderful stuff....both of these folks were masters.
I am so glad that I have discovered Elis, and feel
sorry that I was not familiar with her long ago.
She passed away at age 36 in 1982, and brought
enlightening moments to so many.
Their collaboration gave birth to a rich and magical thing!
Genius!.......2006-11-22
This record is a true jewel, a century-recording. It's like you enter a place with stagnant energy in which, suddenly, a beautiful woman who dropped from nowhere lights a cigarette, and not voluntarily, but because you let yourself go, you inhale the smoke, and thereby inhale the woman's perfume and all her being ...
It has the incredible presence of touch, of life, of emotions that only analog recordings have and the digital era has buried in 'clean' sound anaestetics. The talent of the musicians is nothing less than genius, not to talk about Jobim's music which is not of century, but of millennary genius. The inner harmony and synergy between Jobim and Regina is not to put in words. It's one of those rare encounters between artists that are truly blessed by heaven.
This unique music has transformed me an evening of utter depression into one of wonder and inner peace. This music is truly religious, in a non-religious sense.
What Brazilians teach us is that musical genius, when you encounter it incarnated in a human being seems to be simplicity. This simplicity is the outer shell of high inner complexity. Brazilians are all gifted for music, as they have it in their blood. This is because they are one of the most emotionally intelligent cultures on earth, together with Cubans and Italians.
One last word: there is today lots of Samba and Bossa Nova around. Don't let yourself fool by all these copy productions. This CD has the originals!! And you may be surprised at the romantic slowness of some of the pieces that you heard played like clockworks and with digital robotic perfection. And also you may be surprised about the natural pathos of the Brazilian soul. What most people confuse with 'bar music' truly is a religious expression. It's people presenting themselves without a shell, without an emotional armor, and with a totally open heart. And the Brazilian language, that has almost totally transcendented Portuguese is next to Indonesian and Italian one of the most beautiful languages for chant.
To play this music like nightclub candies, which is (unfortunately) the understanding most Westerners have of Brazilian music, is based on a cultural misunderstanding. For Brazilians their music is sacred, no less than that. And perhaps, this CD will convince you of this truth!
This CD merits 50 stars, not just 5.
Elis & Tom. They live!.......2006-11-10
This the epitome of awesome music! Two giants of Brazilian and international music paired in one of the best ever Bossa Nova records. The music they make together has an inherent energy and romanticism that feels utterly free and endless.
Still Fabulous!.......2006-09-10
A treasured classic!
After the justly famous Getz/Gilberto album, this is the most essential Jobim session. Recorded at MGM Studios, Los Angeles, California between February 22 and March 9, 1974 this recording pairs the brilliant Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina and the father of bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim. This album is magic!
Regina, who many feel was the finest female Brazilian jazz singer ever, adroitly taps into the melancholy, existential sadness at the heart of so many Jobim recordings. ELIS AND TOM features a full orchestra. Moreover, Jobim wisely tailors his arrangements to suit the strengths of Elis who works best in a sparse environment.
Portuguese lyrics enrapture me. The sublime song cycle of material, reminiscent to my ear of Lani Hall, Herb Alpert's wife (lead Brazil '66) solo material, creates an emotionally complex mood of melancholy that suddenly bursts free with the exhilarating, wondrous Aguas De Marco (Waters Of March). The lyrics sung in Portuguese add a fresh dimension of mystery and tension to the recording.

Customer Reviews:
The music of Jobim forever supplies us with the soundtrack to our passions..........2007-06-09
Antonio Carlos Jobim weaved a magic spell with his music the way few songwriters ever can; and he sang wonderfully as well. He truly invented Bossa Nova music in the late 1950s with João Gilberto; and for this he deserves to be in the history books forever for his fine contributions to the world of music.
The CD starts off with the smash hit "The Girl From Ipanema." Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto's wife, sings the part of the vocals that are English. Although some may say that Astrud "sang flat;" her voice imparted a sense of natural sensuality and honesty that few professional singers ever achieve. The Portuguese lyrics are also beautiful even if you don't understand precisely what they mean--this song is THAT good.
Another major early hit for Jobim follows; the song entitled "Desafinado (Off Key)" shines like gold. Jobim plays piano on "Desafinado (Off Key)" while both Astrud and João Gilberto sing to perfection. Stan Getz does a great saxophone solo on this classic track, too. In addition, "Só Danço Samba" continues the romantic, enchanting early '60s Bossa Nova flavor; Jobim is on guitar and again Stan Getz accompanies the rest of the crew with a flawless saxophone performance.
"Insensatez (How Insensitive)" features Astrud Gilberto once more as she sings the lyrics to this melancholy ballad. The Marty Paich Orchestra performs a very well done musical arrangement; and Jobim also plays guitar for this number.
"Amor Em Paz (Once I Loved);" Água De Beber" and "Samba De Uma Nota Só (One Note Samba)" provide us with three magical instrumental numbers. The sophistication of the musical arrangements showcase the genius of Jobim's music and artistry; and the Brazilian beat enchants you with its captivating beauty. I love those strings and the piano on "Samba De Uma Nota Só (One Note Samba)!" SMILE
"Wave" and "Tide" boast smooth as silk arrangements by Claus Ogerman and Eumir Deodato, respectively.
The CD track set ends fittingly with Jobim's "Passarim," a number from the late 1980s. The vocals on "Passarim" reflect great forethought and good judgment. In addition, the track set proceeds in chronological order; this illustrates the development of Jobim's artistry very well.
The liner notes include an essay about Jobim and his career by Steven Ivory; and you get the song credits and the years in which they were recorded. The artwork exceeds my expectations with good use of color and a great black and white picture of Jobim on the front cover.
I highly recommend this CD for Jobim fans and fans of Bossa Nova music everywhere. If you want to get acquainted with Jobim's work but you can only choose a single CD to buy you can't go wrong with this one.
Enjoy!!!
Excellent!.......2007-05-12
This CD took me right back to my days in the early 60s of babysitting for young couples and listening to all of their albums. If you like bossa nova, you couldn't ask for more than this CD. Jobim is the master.

Amazon.com essential recording
While Antonio Carlos Jobim is an essential figure in the music of Brazil, he also created a significant place for himself in American music as a great songwriter and a key figure in the tremendous popularity of bossa nova. Apart from his unique melodic gift, what makes Jobim's work memorable is the complexity of mood he could evoke--the touch of sadness that colors the brightest bossa nova, the irony in the midst of joy, and the mixture of delicacy and resilience in his voice and piano. He was an artist who worked primarily in pastels, but it was his sense of shadows that gave his work its most enduring qualities. Including his most famous tunes and collaborators--like "The Girl from Ipanema" with Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto--Jobim's Finest Hour catches it all, from the standard-bearers to such gems as the playful "Aguas de Marco." --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Bossa Nova.......2007-03-29
I love Bossa Nova music. Playful, fun, peaceful. It took a flower sellers insight to tell Antonio Carlos Jobim that he was destined for greater things. It took a flower seller to see the genius of the man and the music. We have loved it ever since.
A Good Primer For Beginners ; One Mislabeled Track.......2007-01-26
For those beginning to explore the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bossa Nova in general, 'Antonio Carlos Jobim's Finest Hour' is a nice first album. The classic versions of "Girl From Ipanema", "Corcovado" and "Desafinado" with Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto are included with this compilation, but the best material on this CD are the tracks from Jobim's 1963 'The Composer of Desafinado, Plays' album, which are beautiful instrumental versions of his best-known compositions, complete with Claus Ogerman's lush orchestra. Some might think that these particular tracks sound like "Elevator Music", but listen carefully and you'll find a depth of emotion and beauty in Jobim's spare, haunting piano playing and sideman Jimmy Cleveland's trombone solos that will change your preconceptions about lush orchestral music.
One Warning: 'Antonio Carlos Jobim's Finest Hour' has a mislabeled track, "O Morro Nao Tem Vez (AKA Favela)" is actually "Amor Em Paz ("Once I Loved"). Both tracks are from the "The Composer of Desafinado, Plays" album. The latter is the more popular song, but "O Morro Nao Tem Vez" is one of the most underrated songs Jobim ever wrote and a masterpiece in its own right. The remainder of the songs on 'Finest Hour' come from Jobim's other albums dating from the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. These tracks do not have the same wondrous beauty as those earlier, 1960s-era cuts, (hence the four star rating) but are still worth your undidvided attention.
My third time buying it.......2006-07-28
I first heard this CD at a friend's house about eight years ago, then heard it again about a year or two after that and absolutely fell in love. Since then, I've moved and re-moved, lost/broke this CD few times, bought new ones, and now it's in my ipod as a favorite! The music is relaxing, uplifting, and Jobim's voice is truly soothing: a true soundtrack for a warm and misty evening stroll through the streets of downtown NYC.
Push Time Back II.......2006-03-20
I completely concur with Miguel Hernandez!
This music reminds me of my childhood times when my father played the Beautiful Music station FM 100 in Chicago - especially "Wave."
Jobim is a master of melody and rhythm.
Highly recommended for your collection.
Music to shag Austin Powers to.......2005-10-07
Just the thing to put on if you're having Jill St. John (or Robert Morse, ladies) over for cocktails.
Listen to the above samples for the feel, but the CD's stereo mix and lush sound far exceed the streaming quality heard here.
Wonderful period stuff.

Bossa Nova.......2007-03-29
I enjoy Bossa Nova, beautiful music I have enjoyed all the cd's, I have purchased.
The Tide has come in!.......2006-11-03
Even though the music on this CD was recorded in 1967, it still "works" in this present time. Jobim was truly ahead of his time - he was a genius, like Mozart. The music on this CD ranges from the most beautiful and lyrical song you can hear ("Sue Ann")to a totally groovin' and movin" song ("Remember"- totally addicting- you will play it over and over)to the most rocking and rolling cuts (4 versions, 4 cuts,of "Tema Jazz")you can imagine Jobim could compose! What a variety! You can play this as background music to any activity you are engaged in ( I play it while I work - it is very energizing!)and also play it in your computer - great music to keyboard by! Definitely worth buying - I got two - one for my husband, who is working away from home, and one for myself. You will not regret this purchase.
Everlasting .......2006-02-10
Jobim's music is very elegant and classy. It can be also a background on any activities - you will feel comfortable and relaxed. "Tide" is my favourite instrumental album.
One of the best and it will be one of your favorites, too........2006-02-02
I first bought TIDE on vinyl, shortly after it was released, already being a fan of Jobim. I played the grooves off of it. Now, I have it in CD. It's doubtful anyone in the world has played and listened to this album more than I have over the years. The appeal is threefold: First, Jobim's music is relentlessly upbeat and mood elevating. There is a happiness and joy which never fails to make your outlook on life better. Second, the music is relaxing. It cuts through tension and removes the stress and aggravation of everyday living. Third, it's rhythmic. Brazilian beats are recognized as the most expressive and soul-moving in the world. If these rhythms don't get your body subtly moving, you'll need life supports! If you don't know Jobim or haven't listened to Brazilian Bossa Nova, start here! Jobim is the undisputed, heavyweight champion of the genre and THIS album is at the absolute top of his work. Do NOT miss it!
Boy From Ipanema Strikes Again.......2005-10-02
Although the "Wave" album may be a tad superior to this effort, this is extremely enjoyable nonetheless. The variations of "Girl From Ipanema" are very unusual. The beginning and ending piano chord progressions herald that this is not the dreamy version of old but a new exciting journey to that famed beach. The other tracks, especially the different versions of "Tema Jazz", are the icing on the cake.
Those who may dismiss this as a tepid effort (even I have to admit that "Tide" is just a variation of "Wave"; it's just too obvious.) should just listen rather than judge. No matter what, this is still a gorgeous album with beautiful music and worth listening to over and over again.

This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. --Rick Mitchell

Love it!.......2007-01-09
Love this! It's part bossa nova, kind of jazzy. Takes me to a beach with white sands and clear blue water, exactly where I want to be at this time of the year.
Absolutely amazing.......2006-09-06
I've had this cd for about 10 years now, and I've loved every minute of it again and again. Every song has its own beauty, in a very diverse way. The performance in "Chega de Saudade" is particularly riveting, each instrument delivering an absolutely perfect solo.
Also, not to be vulgar, but having sex to this album? A+++ would do again.

"Casa" is the Portuguese word for "house." It's also the title of this melodic and moving tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim by the Oscar® and Grammy award-winning pianist-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and his vocalist wife, Paula. The Morelenbaums, who cofounded Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, both worked with the maestro, and almost all of the tracks here were recorded in Jobim's Rio home. The CD contains fluid and florid renditions of bossa nova-era classics from the Jobim canon, from "Amor em Paz"--with Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--and "Bonita" to "Vivo Sonhando." It also unveils rare songs like "Chanson pour Michelle," a short and sweet composition written for a soap opera, and a never-before-heard work, "Tema para Ana," an intimate piano/cello duet. Sakamoto's spare and splendid pianisms ring from Jobim's piano. Morelenbaum's singing cello tones complement his wife's angelic Portuguese and English vocals. Together this talented trio--with occasional accompaniment by percussionist Marcos Suzano, guitarist Luiz Brasil, vocalist Ed Motta, and bassist Zeca Assumpçao--beautifully exposes the French influences of Satie, Ravel, and Chopin in Jobim's music. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Celestial music - .......2007-05-07
My Profile: 43 yo - no music qualifications whatsoever-
I got this fine cd last year in my first time in Buenos Aires.. though my trip was for widenning my musical horizons.. what can I said that has not been adequately commented by more knowledable reviewers than I?.. the music is serene, celestial, non-strident...he piano, the cello and that voice!! you know you are prividledged in life to have a chance to comtemplate on this type of beauty... whatever scars we have in the soul and body, take a moment to soothe yourself..
Gentle Magic to Free Your Soul.......2007-03-28
I just love love love this CD. Everything about it is so artfully rendered, it takes my soul away to gently float free in a most beautiful place. Ms. Morelenbaun has a voice that, of all female vocals in the world, is often my most favorite to hear. Virtually no vibrato, just clean and clear exquisite and delicate classic femininity. Mr. Morelenbaum, Mr. Sakamoto and all supporting musicians provide the most sensitively interwoven instrumental skills that there could ever be; they perfectly ride, complement and contribute to the magical musical moment that is always now, in flowing pieces such as these. Of course, the ineffably beautiful heart and soul of the basic songs to start with are indispensible (thank you now and forever, o-most revered JC Jobim!). Honestly, this CD places in my top 10 of all time, especially now, in my more relaxed and gentle mature years... ;)
Some of the Best Music ever!.......2007-02-03
I came by the Morelenbaums by 'A Day in New york'. It was love at first
sound. I checked out to see if anything else was available. I found 'Casa'
and immediately ordered it. It has been in my CD player since I got it.
This from a Classical music buff and a college music degree. This music
defies description (I do like bossa nova and Jobim especially). This group is so together, it sounds like the members know exactly what each
other is thinking. It is all so right that it appears precision and class
like this is not possible. Paula's voice has a simple (without vibrato) beauty that is mesmerizing. The arrangements are exquisite. The Cello and piano never over-do and the whole is something you must hear to believe. I can only add to this - GET IT!!
jazzman.......2007-01-17
Absolutely fabulous renditions of Jobim. Paula's voice is so pure and
gentle, along with Jacques' cello gliding through the sketches. And the
pianist Sakamoto is perfect as well. I just love this cd. I quickly
obtained their other Jobim tribute cd "A Day in New York" (the Japanese
enhanced version with 5 bonus tracks), which is even further proof that
there is a musical heaven on earth. So sophistocated, cool, and gentle.
I eagerly await their next release. 5 million stars.
absolutely amazing...........2006-01-16
So much to say about this wonderful recording. As I write this, there are 27 reviews posted for Casa and not one of them is less than 4 stars, with the vast majority as 5 stars. That speaks volumes in itself. But the quality of the words and the thought behind them is truly a tribute to Jobim. If we were all lucky enough to have him with us now, the words of these reviews would surely either make him smile or bring tears of joy to his eyes. This truly is music that soothes...reflects...and makes us all appreciate either finding it or being introduced to it by someone. Introduce only your best friends to this, those that would appreciate it as much as you and I do.

The American producer Creed Taylor produced some of the best recordings Antonio Carlos Jobim ever made. Taylor's lush strings, evocative woodwinds, and selection of top-notch jazz musicians were a perfect match for Jobim's spare, bossa nova-flavored compositions. This 1970 recording features Jobim backed by bassist Ron Carter, trombonist Urbie Green, flutist Hubert Law, and soprano saxophonist Joe Farrell. Several classics, such as "Children's Games," the lilting "Tereza My Love," and the two soft samba/swing renditions of Ary Barroso's "Brazil," are lovingly draped in the velvet arrangements of the then-young Brazilian sensation Eumir Deodato. Jobim's dry and achy vocals, along with his acoustic and rarely heard electric-piano playing, add the right sonic seasoning to this delightful disk. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Sublime.......2006-06-12
I'll add my praises of this disc to all the others. I fell totally in LOVE with Bossa Nova back in high school. I collected everything I could, from Best of Sergio Mendes - which is also very highly recommended to those who love this genre- to Joao Gilberto. In fact I made a trip to Brazil back in 1975 because I had to see this land where this sublime music came from. Anyway back to the disc. I had everything Jobim had recorded but this one intrigued me the most. It was his darkest and most complex. Worth adding to any collection of jazz, bossa, latin or anything else.
Jobim.......2006-03-07
Listen to the samples and you will not need anyone's comments. "Wave", "Tide", "Stone flower" and the rest of the albums with Jobim's music will live for ever. Smooth, relaxing, stylish.
Maybe the most precious Jobim treasure.......2006-02-24
Another 5-star Jobim collaboration with producer Creed Taylor for his CTi label with arrangements by Deodato and a team of Jazz master musicians featuring Urbie Green and Hubert Laws.
Repertoire consists of Jobim material except for traditional Brazilian composer Ary Barroso's 'Brazil'.
Part of Jobim's compositions is music he composed for the film 'The Adventurers' also with arrangements by Deodato, issued in a very rare soundtrack album by Paramount label. Unfortunately, out of print.
Refer to the beautiful waltz 'Children's Games' which was also recorded by Elis Regina in her 'Elis & Tom' under the Portuguese title 'Chovendo na Roseira'.
A fundamental Jobim and Bossa Nova and Great Music album!
Mere words just aren't enough..........2006-02-09
This is the greatest in bossa nova bar none and would be my pick of what music straight from Heaven sounds like. Antonio Carlos Jobim is the underrated genius of the genre and his recordings are beyond words for description. Both cuts of "Brazil" are priceless and the song "Sabia" is worth the price of this album alone. The new 2002 reissue has new liner nothes and a crystal-clear sound, giving them the greatest of sound quality for the full effect. Do yourself a favor and get this, it will send you to places you never thought possible.
Stone Flower-Also Ran.......2006-02-01
While this is a very fine album, the tracks are not Jobim's best. These are prime examples of a great composer's lesser works, that produced by anyone else would be considered gems. The musicians on the album are all well known in their own right and the recording quality is excellent. A good album but not a great album
