This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Stokowski in Phase 4 land, Vol. 1.......2006-09-22

Decca has pulled a lot of Stokowski's gaudy Phase 4 recordings off the market so that they can reappear in this box set, but the company had already licensed many out to another label, Cala, that specializes in all things Stokowski. So if you pick and choose, you can buy your favorites recordings individually with a little effort. Of the two volumes in the Original Masters series, this one is the more interesting musically.

For one thing, it features two of the conductor's great strengths: his incomparable Bach transcriptions (no one else performs them with the same total commitment) and his Debussy and Ravel. Admittedly, this La Mer and Daphnis and Chloes have been multi-miked within an inch of their lives, and neither represents Stokowski as wonderuflly as his EMI Debussy collection, but if you love the old magician, you'll love these readings.

Aslo very appealing are the Enigma Variations, which Stokowski recorded only once, and the Franck D minor Sym., though don't expect world-class execution in either case. Stokowski championed early Messiaen in l'Ascension, and here is his last version, along with a swooning and seductive Scriabin Poeme d'Extase.

You have to adore recorded excess to swallow this Symphonie fantastique and Firebird, both gorgeous in a kind of Las Vegas neon billboard sort of way. But for geneations of listeners, that's what Stokowski is all about. What he's not about, sadly, is the wretchedly eccentric and nearly unlistenable Tchaikovsky Fifth Sym., the only performance in this whole set that made me hold my nose.

In all, thee are enough goodie here to justify buying the whole box, unless you want to pick and choose, in which case turn to Cala's excellent reissues.

Stupendous Stokowski.......2004-03-30

This five disc box set featuring the Decca Recordings (1965-72) of conductor Leopold Stokowski is among the latest batch of releases in the limited edition "Original Masters" series. While parts of this particular collection have been available on CD in the past (in the old "Phase 4" and "Weekend Classics" series), some of this material is being made available for the first time internationally. Those performances include Franck's Symphony (Hilversium RPO, 1970), Elgar's Enigma Variations (Czech PO, 1972), Ravel's "Fanfare" (Hilversium, 1970) and Messiaen's "L'Ascension" (London SO, 1970). Other highlights include an entire disc (CD1) of Stokowski's Transcriptions, and a delightful reading of Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" with the New Philharmonia Orchestra from 1968. In all, another great set in the "Original Masters" series.

Mera-by-numbers.......2006-04-20

Whilst it can be safely said that Mera has never put out a bad disc, he has however put out a number which verge on blandness. This, sadly is one of those discs. Whilst the production is excellent (as always) and Mera is once more captured at a level of mastery few singers could ever hope to attain; the disc is rather forulaic and a shade uninspiring. It should be understod that this does not infer any fault on the part of the artist, rather on the part of his mentor or manager. Mera does Bach, Baroque, Classical, Motzart... homogenous 'classic-by-numbers' is no way to spread the net wide and catch a wider audience. By simply repeating the same staid songs the artist loses some of his edge and begins to fade into the wallpaper.
On the plus side, this CD is GREAT relaxing music, music to work to or wash the dishes to. Why? well because the tracks are all but the same and so it plays seamlessly - then so does elevator music...
Of course it's a Mera CD, so the serious fan HAS to own it, but for the newcomer? I'd recomend you dig a little harder and seek out his better - more varied works

He has the voice of an angel........2005-04-23

This is one of the few cd:s that I can listen without skipping a track. All the songs that Yoshikazu sings are so beautiful! I also like the arrangements, especially the violin solos. "Auf Flugeln des Gesanges" is sung by hundreds of singers and I have never before liked this song but after hearing Yoshikazu's version, it became one of my favourite songs. "Lascia ch'io pianga" is usually sung by a woman but Yoshikazu sings better than any man or woman. His coloraturas are crystal clear but yet his voice doesn't shake at all. "Ombra mai fu" almost makes me cry. It's fantastic! No one else could sing it better. I love Masayuki Kino's violin solo in "Morgen". Though the song is very slow, it isn't boring. I usually skip the song if it is sung by any other singer but this version is absolutely worth listening. Yoshikazu's "Allerseelen" is also listenable though it is not very good. "Romance" from Faust is so pure! Again, the violin solo in makes the song even more beautiful. "La dans des Troyennes virginales" was well played by the orchestra, especially the harpist. Bach-Gounod's "Ave Maria" is sung by every singer but somehow, Yoshikazu's version is totally different. The range is good; not too high. The backing by harp is also beautiful as it doesn't cover Yoshikazu's voice at all. "Je te veux" is my favourite song on this cd. I listen to it again and again; it makes me happy! "Kdyz mne stará matka zpívat" is, like all the other songs, sung in the right language. Nobody else can make so beautiful coloraturas. Yoshikazu has also good dynamics. His version of "Solveigs sang" beats even Karita Mattila's version. He has no trouble with pronouncing Norwegian language. I enjoy to listen the high coloratura parts. It is also nice to hear Rachmaninoff's vocalise sung by a singer with low voice; this song is, like "Ave Maria" usually too high. It fits well for the countertenor voice. "Greensleeves" shows that Yoshikazu can sing traditional music too. The arrangement in the first verse was a little bit boring but listenable. The other verses are fantastic, especially the "God I pray..." part.

Wow! What a voice! And how many languages! German, Italian, Latin, Czech, Norwegian, French, English. I have played this cd to many of my friends and Yoshikazu Mera got a lot of new fans. I have never liked tenors but now I absolutely love countertenors and especially Yoshikazu Mera.

Spellbound!.......2004-04-19

I divide my music listening experience now in ¨before Mera¨and
¨After Mera¨: Being a fan of barock vocal music I've being listening to some of the best countertenors for quite a while,
their voices being specially suited for many Handelian arias
that were originally written for famous ¨castrati¨ as Senesino
or Nicolini. And then I happened to listen ¨Laschia chío pianga¨
sang by Yoshikazu Mera, I was in awe! I run out of my house to
get whatever CD I could get right away from this otherwordly,
perfect Voice and got ¨Romance¨.Every single piece of this CD is
transcendentally beautiful! The Voice of Mera will leave you
spellbound! I have no words to describe it, you listen and you
soar to a world of Bliss and Beauty!. Today I took it with me to
the birthday party of a friend...before the second aria had finished totally, I was surrounded by an eager group of people
asking me: Who on earth was that?! where can I get it?! all with
pen and papers to write the names of album and singer. It is amazing to observe the expressions of my friends when they

to hear his own _Ombra mai fu_ and _Lascia ch'io piangia_ rendered the way Mr. Mera has done here.

I single these two songs out since they are so well known and loved -- and lord knows, I do too, but never have I heard them sound this beautiful. Go ahead, compare these with other renditions yourself.

Paradoxically, here you hear the songs, not the singer. In other words, you don't get distracted listening to the brilliant technical prowess of the singer: Mr. Mera's singing fills the universe between your ears with grace and leaves you no room for you to pedantically admire his mastery while you are listening -- not any more than you can see light as it lights up the face of your beloved.

Angelic, ethereal, haunting...these adjectives are trite but what other words do we have?

I can only think of Andreas Scholl for a fair comparison. And as much as I love Gerard Lesne's voice also, Mera's is of another order: he casts sorcery over Handel's pieces and lets you hear and become aware of the thalassic mystery of sadness inherent in the ephemerality of all manner of beauty......destined to fade away into the silent void of space.

Every track mesmerizes. (I never knew so many famous composers were actually so...good!)

Here is music -- minus the physiology of singing. Thus you end up listening with your soul. Listen to this presentation of music, and let it touch you: you will rediscover and be humbled by your own humanity.

A Stunning Countertenor.......2002-09-10

I bought this CD to hear Yoshikazu Mera's version of Rachmininov's "Vocalise" (I also recommend Natalie Dassay's version of this piece). I was far from disappointed. Mera's voice is lush, pure, and haunting. His voice is hard-wired to the soul and to the heart. This CD will soothe you, calm you, uplift your spirit, and inspire you. I realize that may sound like heavy hyperbole, but I assure you, you will be stunned and amazed.

We remember Rachmaninov today mostly for the music he wrote. But as this set quickly reveals, he was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, able to play his own music and a great variety of others with tremendous personality and a technique that is still astonishing. There's no point picking highlights from this set, since they are everywhere. But if you've never heard Rachmaninov play Schumann's Carnaval, try starting there for one of the most imaginative recreations of a piece of music ever recorded. The set also includes Rachmaninov's only recordings as a conductor in two of his own major works. --Leslie Gerber

At the time of this review, whenever you search for a phrase such as "Rachmaninoff Complete", amazon's search engine always lands on this out-of-print recording (ASIN: B000003FB7) . It's also no fun to see that it costs more than a hundred bucks! But if you type "B000A2AD2S" in the search box, you'll see the new reissued set for half the price. It's the exact same 10 CDs. Just the cover art is different.

Unfortunately, this situation is a common pattern with amazon's listing of classical music: when you use your intuition and type in common-sense search phrases for Bach, Mozart, etc, you often get the ultra-expensive out-of-print ships-in-4-weeks items as the default item. It takes a lot of detective work to find the newer reissue recordings. For example, to find the new reissue without knowing the ASIN, I had to enter just "Rachmaninoff" in the search text (deliberately left the word "Complete" out of the search) so it would no longer lock me into this item page that you're looking at and give me a full listing instead. I then sorted the listing by "Original Release Date" and found it on the 2nd page. There's no picture on the new item which doesn't give you any confidence that you found the right one. Don't worry, B000A2AD2S is what you want.

For product research, it's good to have both ASIN product listings because the older out-of-print B000003FB7 has the sound samples (and also all the helpful customer reviews) while the new B000A2AD2S has the better price and availability.

To make things even more confusing, the amazon staff sometimes copies entire customer reviews to the new item which would then make THIS review seem strangely out of place. If that happens and I notice it, I will delete this review for B000003FB7.

(In another strange twist, amazon searches in rock/pop usually points you to the newer cheaper remastered/repackaged/reissued/whatever of a particular recording. I don't know why it works the opposite way in classical music?!?!)

6, or Even 7 Stars!.......2005-06-04

Hofmann hit the nail on the head when he said Rachmaninov had "arms of steel and heart of gold". From this album, we can have a clear picture of Rachmaninov's vison of music, of his musical mind and thoughts and moreover his own playing.

While Kempff's playing would often remind of the protestant church music, Rachmaninov bring to our mind the chanting of the Orthodox church, which is much thicker and darker. On top of that, his playing is orchestral which is so powerful and full colours. Yet, it is nothing like Richter, where often the whole piece is just one phrase.

Here each piece has it's own life and identity each with a focal point. It is water tight compact and yet very much natural and alive, never as hair-raising as Horowitz. But, it is not natural in Arrau's way. It is somewhere in between, closer to Argerich but with more consistency and depth. And like Casals' playing, it keeps our attention from the first note up to its focal point until its very end. But unlike Casals, he touches our hearts. It is very emotional but never to the point of being sentimental-- the performance of his own concertos, for example, can tell you that.

Sure, he did have fingers of steel that helped him to bring out whatever colour or atmostphere as appropriate. And despite that fact that there are some minor alterations on the scores like his Chopin, he is one of the few pianists who could really show you every note on the score counts and, above all, how it counts...

His Chopin may not be as neurotic as Cortot. Nonetheless, he sheds light on the dark and nervous side of Chopin so well: a very throbbing interpretation that is so unique. We also have him accompanying Kreisler on some violin sonatas, something that one could turn to time and again, year after year. What a great chamber musician and accompanist he was...!

The recorded sound of the CDs do vary, and some are more acceptable than the others. But for genuine music lovers, they should be able to get over this very soon: how else would they benefit from one of the greatest legacies of a genuinely great musician!

A must have for Piano and classical music lovers.......2005-04-04

To respond to a review about the sound quality-for those people who have no experience with historical performances i.e cortot-hofmann-etc these discs are for the most part much better recorded. There are the inevitable pops and hisses but if these things disturb you, or you cant get past them, then you shouldnt be listening to this kind of thing anyway. the importance here is in the playing, and the playing is extra ordinary. I you want to buy a disc for the reperatoire then i can think of hundreds of performances that will satisfy, but only people with a true interest to hear and study these pieces will be beyond satisfied. I know that may not sound like a lot of fun, but these discs are fun, great, and for me, almost too good to be true. Again, if sound disturbs you, then you may be listening to the music for the wrong reasons. Take from it the playing, the revelations that Rach provides to his pieces, and how fortunate we are that it sounds as good as it does.

Ah, Rachmaninoff, brilliant star of music, how we adore you.......2003-09-14

The music of Rachmaninoff is beyond words, furthermore, beyond imagination. He was a genius, no doubt, and nobody will ever understand how incredibly lucky we are to be blessed with his compositions. Furthermore, it is truly astonishing to hear Rachmaninoff play his own work. There is nothing so beautiful on this earth and there never will be.

Review from a spoiled modern listener.......2003-07-13

I'll admit that I'm a spoiled modern listener, accustomed to having the bang and hiss edited out of a recording, and it took me a while to warm to these. Rachmaninoff's performances are splendid, but if you can hardly hear them over the cacophony of background noise, what's the use? His performance of his own, often overlooked Concerto No. 4 finally made me sit up and listen, even though I've owned two versions of this piece for a number of years (Ashkenazy & Wild).

Classical Jukebox Vol I - A Vintage Oldie!.......2000-12-13

Many of the same pieces on this CD were recorded on a vintage LP vinyl album of the late 1960s, entitled "More Greatest Hits" by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. But the CD is even better; the recordings originally may have been analog, but there are more of them. The choice of music and quality is typically Ormandy -- outstanding. Young music lovers just beginning to explore the classical repertoire will especially appreciate this CD. I highly recommend it.

J'AI UN FAIBLE POUR ORMANDY.......2000-02-13

I confess to having a soft spot for Eugene Ormandy. The programme on this compilation CD is most varied, it goes all the way from HUNGARIAN DANCE NO. 5 by Brahms to the SUNRISE THEME by R. Strauss. The sound is pure Ormandy, crisp and clean, the tempos are always measured and well executed. The recorded sound is beautiful. Only one reservation - the short pieces leave one wishing for more of the same. Someone please inform me when the Sony people put Ormandy's rendition of MOTU PERPETUO by Paganini on CD...

This four-CD set presents a selection of performances by a young lion of the keyboard: Vladimir Horowitz. Dating from 1928 to 1947, these classic recordings document the piano virtuoso at his most fiery and fearless. The repertoire ranges from Baroque and Classical scores (Scarlatti, Haydn, Beethoven, Mendelssohn) to the great Romantics (Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Rachmaninoff), 20th-century pieces (Debussy, Poulenc, Prokofiev) and transcriptions by Horowitz himself. Pristine copies of the original HMV/Victor 78s were transferred and digitally remastered using the state-of-the-art CAP 440 technique. The handsomely illustrated 84-page booklet features an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winner Tim Page and a perceptive essay by New York Times critic Paul Griffiths ("Vladimir Horowitz: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Lion"), as well as detailed artist biographies from The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
