Sung in French, Wagner's long melodic lines become less declamatory and more lyrical, with softer consonants and odd stresses. Stand-outs among these vintage recordings from the twenties include Marcel Journet's masterful "Wotan's Farewell" and Germaine Lubin's defiantly sexy "Immolation Scene." Tenors Franz, Rousselière, and Vezzani, by contrast, are heard at less than their best. Excellent Ward Marston transfers, but why wasn't the greatest Wagnerian tenor of all, Georges Thill, left out? --Jed Distler
