Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Flats and Sharps.......2007-05-18

I enjoy the Swingle Singers very much but sadly, in this album they are flat on about half of the tracks. When they are on key, they are very, very good. When they are flat they are awful. Recommendation: buy a different Swingle Singers CD.

5 out of 5 stars Still new... and fantastic.......2007-03-25

As time goes by, these recordings seem to become better and better. Fresh, perfect... fantastic CD.

4 out of 5 stars A Swingle Singers Half Treasure -.......2007-03-10

If you love Bach and are a fan of the Swingle Singers, buy this CD. Fans of the Swingle Singers enjoy them for what they do to music - release it with air and bounce - and their style is perfectly suited for Bach. I couldn't enjoy it more. But the second Cd in this set is their treatment of Mozart, and, for me, it's inconsistent. This is due to the different styles of the two composers and I just think they match up better with Bach. But at this price, I shouldn't be complaining. The first CD alone is worth twice as much. Snatch it up!

5 out of 5 stars A capella reigns.......2007-01-12

Another fine offering by this group. Fun for classical music buffs and novices.

5 out of 5 stars Best Swingles Ever.......2006-02-16

If you know the Swingle Singers, you may expect jazzed-up Bach with a rhythm section. Now, don't get me wrong, i like that stuff, too, but that is just clean fun, while this is just Bach. No percussion, no jazzy rythym, just straight unaccompanied Bach. AND IT IS WONDERFUL.
Precise rhythm, clear vocal lines, everything you expect from the Swingles without the jazz. This is a really great album that should be bought by all Swingle lovers and all Bach lovers.
P.S. i bought this cd when it first came out,so I have never even heard the Mozart. With all due deference to fans of the worthy Wolfgang, i have always found the artful Amadeus rather a bore, so I will remain silent about that part of the album. No matter. The Bach alone is worth twice the price, so enjoy. And, hey, the Mozart is a nice bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-07-01

We are using this series of CDs in our homeschool music program - they are fantastic! We especially love this one about Bach - what an awesome man! The story of his life is told in a way that is very interesting and holds the children's attention while also using various pieces of his music in the narration. It is done VERY well! My children are gaining a tremendous amount of knowlege and appreciation for music through this CD and so are my husband and I!

5 out of 5 stars Bach and Handel Treats.......2000-08-04

The unfortunate thingÑif anything can be said to the contrary about this collectionÑis that is an older recording. As far as authenticity, what was available in the days of Bach and Handel to perform their music, and what they may have had in mind as the formidable way of presenting it to the publicÑas well as to the heavensÑmay be quite different things. Viewed in this way, authenticity may be an abstraction we are not here priviledged to comment on.

I have marveled for years, even when these were two separate LP's, of the power and dimensionality conveyed by the way these works are performed. I still switch from one to another piece as which is my favorite. In this respect, the experience is a hermenutic delight. Any lover or respecter of Bach or Handel would not go wrong by including this collection in their musical library.

When I use the word "treats" in the title, I mean just that: it is a collection of works that one would be hard pressed to find performed together on any available recording. And so I use the metaphor "treat," as if I were given a morsel and then devoured it; and another, and devoured that one, each with a fullness of pleasure and delight, and with soul filling satisfaction.

These indivdual recordings are for the most part masterpieces in and of themselves, and to be able to listen to them as they are performed flawlessly, and in a manner that invites the Spirit of GodÑby saying they are a "treat"Ñis to merely to treat them minimally.

3 out of 5 stars Fine recording, but doesn't work for me........1999-05-07

I love several of J.S. Bach's cantatas, and enjoy hearing them in a variety of ways--period performances, orchestral arrangements, etc. Therefore I'm not one to insist on authenticity. Nevertheless, the chorus here sounds too big for the Bach. Also, the program needs more variety for straight through listening. Chorus after (massive) chorus doesn't work for me.

5 out of 5 stars rock on!!!!!.......1999-02-09

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music and Recording.......2005-10-04

It is a better recording than other classical music CD's I've had, and is an impeccable execution of Bach's work. It led me to buy other "Mad About" series CD's of which I'll comment elsewhere. "Mad About Bach" is a fabulous CD of which I never tire. It is motivating. I have been listening to this "Mad About Bach" CD music for 8 years and still love it as one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars This Uncultured Yahoo Loves It.......1999-12-13

I own and enjoy a good number of classical CD's but am far from an expert on what constitutes good and faithful performances. However, I can say that this CD is thoroughly enjoyable to me. My experience has been like lemur@earthling.net's, as many of these songs stay in my head, too, which is a great thing. A good bargain, too.

5 out of 5 stars Nice selection of Bach.......1998-01-13

It's nice to hear a variety of pieces (guitar, harpsichord, etc) on one CD. Some of these tunes I can't get out of my head. :-) END

5 out of 5 stars It delivers!.......2007-01-10

Naturally, one must posess a predisposition for this music appreciation. That said, when played to restore your inner-energy...it works. The specific selection and sequence provide that balance best meant to reenergize. Normally, I'm not 'that' into this music-presentation. For some reason at the time of perusing, it seemed logical to give it a try. Ultimately, I am very glad that I did...powerful stuff, indeed.

3 out of 5 stars this item IS your money's worth of masterworks.......2006-03-17

this recording is worth the money to buy, especially since it has two c.d.s inside. the songs are indeed fine music, many of the masterworks which you "need" to have. but it is neither the finest recording, nor is it a collection of the finest performances. i am in a near-spectacular choral group which performs these works, and i tend to get overly emotionally involved with grand art. so it is especially helpful, that like the other reviewer said, you can consider playing this through an audio player at your workplace.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the office.......2005-09-24

This stays in my stereo at work, and is perfect for "those days."
These CD's are excellent resources for those who don't realize some of the musical heritage has been lost by the Church and needs to be reclaimed.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2005-08-14

This is a very good CD and for those that love the music of the old cathedrals this is the CD you want to have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful variety.......2003-06-10

This has got 2 be 1 of my fav. cd's of all time. The variety & arrangment seems 2 be very well planned. While all of the songs are very beautiful & breathtaking, my 2 favs are the Requiem for My Friend by Preisner & the Dies Irae immediately following it. If you ever run across the Preisner Requiem I would highly recommend that you buy it b/c it is soooo expressive & emotional.

4 out of 5 stars Well done and interesting.......2005-02-22

This recording alternates extended selections of Bach's music (complete pieces or movements) with a narrated and sometimes dramatized biography of Bach. The music selections are excellent and the biography itself is well done and interesting. The lengthy accompanying booklet is also very nice.

My only reservation comes from a feeling that the music and the narration are not as well integrated as they could be. The narrator identifies the musical selections and may give a sentence or two of background for the selection but never really discusses it. Instead, the narration is focused almost entirely on the events of Bach's life. I would have preferred more of a "music appreciation" approach that discussed the music, and had trouble getting used to the bifurcated nature of production. The extended free-standing music selections do mean that the four discs are a sort of "best of Bach" anthology and you can re-listen to just the music by skipping every other track.

Naxos also produces a 2-disc set called An Introduction to Bach: Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 4 & 5 (ASIN: B0000666A9), also by Mr. Seipmann, which closely analyzes the actual music of these two concertos. I found that the two sets are complementary with no overlap, except for part of the booklets, and I would recommend getting both if you have an interest in Bach and are also interested in understanding what to listen for in his music. In addition (or as an alternative), I would also recommend the lectures by Robert Greenberg on "Bach and the High Baroque" produced by the Teaching Company, which are much longer, more detailed, and more focused on the "music appreciation" aspect. They are also much more expensive.

Overall, this item is very worthwhile and a good value, like most of Naxos's products.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful biography, needs more proportion in the music.......2002-08-21

Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.

Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments for the Tchaikovsky on that webpage.)

In direct contrast to the tortured personality of Tchaikovsky, we have the life-loving J.S. Bach, he who lost his temper only when he ran up against ineptitude. Again, the biographical details are fascinating. But also again, the musical examples are far too few--especially for this prolific composer--and some are simply far too long. We do not really need a complete rendition of the famous "Toccata and Fugue" and certainly not of the "Prelude and Fugue in A minor" to which is devoted a 13 minute track.

Here the voice of Bach is supplied by actor John Shrapnel, with Trevor Nichols, Ruth Sillers and David Timson in supporting roles. So 5 stars for the biography, somewhat less for musical examples.

This set has macabre appeal for collectors of worst recorded performances, since this failed Berlioz Requiem is a perfect example of the ghastly breed. Dutoit sleepwalks through one of music's most thrilling scores, leading what sounds like a first rehearsal run-through. Even the Dies irae and Tuba Mirum, which never fail to strike terror, are soporific. Most of the music is, of course, more contemplative, but Dutoit utterly fails to capture its mystery and intensity--it's just slow and choppy. Fine engineering can't save this, nor can the good performances of the choral works that fill out the discs. Get Bernstein on Sony or Munch on RCA to hear what this piece is all about. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Lackluster conducting spoils this one.......2005-09-18

Decca stuck by Dutoit for a decade as their house French onductor, but his recodings, though spectacular in sound, never amounted to the real thing emotionally. He is a cool, detached leader even in Berlioz, where that kind of aloofness makes no musical or dramatic sense. Despite the excellent sonics and the skilled performers, this isn't a memorable version of the Requiem.

4 out of 5 stars A masterpiece still in search of a truly great reading.......2002-12-10

OK, I know you can't say things like this, but I'm going to say it anyway: this is the greatest Requiem ever written. If I could own only one requiem I would gladly chuck out Mozart, Fauré, Britten and Brahms, and Verdi's ridiculously overestimated version on top, and hang on to this one. You may think of Berlioz as the composer of bizarre, unbalanced and bombastic works ("So you are the man who writes music for 500 performers", said Fürst Metternich on meeting the composer; "Oh no, your excellency," replied Berlioz, "sometimes I write for only 450"). This work cannot but change that view. Though very large forces are called for, these are used to diversify rather than amplify sound. The full contingent of brass and percussion is only used twice in the 90 minute span of the piece. This is intensely sombre and serious music. Berlioz had a strange affinity with death, and knows to communicate it (there is a harrowing scene in his memoirs where he describes in detail the exhumation of the body of his dear Harriet many years after her death - that same sense of the futility of life, and the sheer horror and loneliness of death, pervades much of this piece). The music is dictated by psychological insight, not melodic inspiration. The Kyrie for instance is hardly music at all, only a quiet, desperate muttering. Nor does the Dies Irae open with a cheaply effective 'coupe de theatre' à la Verdi, but with a quiet, sad melody on cello's and double basses, and a pianissimo unison line of soprano's and flute wandering forlornly through a vast empty space. From this a march gradually emerges, which then slowly builds up to the tremendous outburst of the Tuba Mirum.
The orchestration is an absolute work of genius and often way ahead of its time. In one place, the orchestral accompaniment is reduced to mere alternating chords of three flutes, high up, and eight trombones in their lowest register, creating a sense of musical vertigo, if such a thing exists; in another, the choir sings the same two notes throughout while a marvellous set of orchestral variations is developed simultaneously. The Lacrymosa is simply mind-boggling, undoubtedly one of the most overwhelming pieces of choral music ever written. The Agnus Dei picks up some threads heard earlier in the work and then ends with a series of serenely comforting 'Amen's', strings playing luminous slow arppeggio's while six timpani emulate something like a tired, irregular heartbeat.

Though some decent recordings of this work are available, it has not been as lucky on disc as it deserves, and none of the existing recordings that I'm familiar with does it full justice. Previn and Davis are serviceable and at times impressive; Ozawa is bland and forgettable, nor did the Levine reading stick in my memory long; I'm still curious about the much lauded Shaw, though my experiences with his Mahler 8 also engender some doubts; this Montréal recording, finally, is easily the most beautiful of those I know. Dutoit takes a relaxed and moderate view of the work, very much concerned with bringing out its many beauties. In doing so he renders it less confronting than it should be, but it remains a very moving experience indeed. The two Big Moments are powerful, though they don't convey the feeling of so many drums rolling at full force as the score shows there are (Previn succeeds best in this passage). The singing and playing are beyond criticism throughout, and the recorded sound, if at times slightly blurry and a bit underpowered, is pleasantly mellow and generally excellent. Still, dear John Eliot Gardiner, could you be persuaded to please, please, round up all period instrument players in Europe and expand your Monteverdi choir a bit for the occasion to give us the definitive account of this sublime work?

5 out of 5 stars Superb!!.......2002-07-26

Before I rave about this well-played and well-recorded Requiem, I can see why many people would not cling to this recording. This is because Charles Dutoit takes an approach to this piece like no conductor before him. Whether you agree with the interpretations or not, new ways of performing a piece should always be applauded. Dutoit lets this piece shine with the highlight not being the actual forces that make up this huge work, but by the quality of the playing. Each meoldic line and harmonic note is brought out to give the listener something new to listen for. When I first heard it, I noticed many colors and effects that I never noticed before, especially in the Sanctus (which is probably the best track in this recording). The Montreal Symphony has excellent intonation in relation to the chorus. The balance between the singers and orchestra is terrific, and probably the best out of any Berlioz Requiem recording. Listen for yourself and enjoy what you hear, because I bet you'll be surprised by what you have never noticed before.

5 out of 5 stars Berlioz Regained.......2000-07-03

Allow me to dissent from Amazon's reviewer. When, many years ago, I was in college, the Requiem was a "high-fidelity" item. That is, the more sound you could produce without actually blowing your speakers, the better recording. Dutoit's performance does not go in for gratuitous noise and reminds me that this is the same Berlioz who wrote L'Enfance du Christ.

The power is still there: the Lacrymosa and the Benedictus still roll to thundrous climaxes. But most of the Requiem is lyrical and, although Berlioz is said not to have been a believer, approaches being liturgical. The work itself has some dull spots (so does Les Troyens) but not many.

Throughout this performance everything is clear--my Latin is not good enough to comment on the diction, but the music is articulated with loving care. Counterpoint, harmony, and inner voicing are all audible and balanced.

The five sacred pieces, rarely heard, are a worthwile bonus. The last, the Resurrexit from an earlier mass, is particularly interesting because Berlioz used part of it in the Requiem, improving it greatly. Some of the rest of it sounds like failed Rossini, and Berlioz was clearly correct in deciding not to go farther in that direction.

Excellent, but different from what you have heard before.

Everything on this CD is beautiful and up to Carwood's usual high standards, but the standout selection is the Passion according to St. John. The combination of dignity and expressiveness in their presentation of this text is riveting. Instead of my usual reaction to a Passion setting, "well, that was very good, but I'm glad it's finally over", I wanted to listen to it again right away. It's just wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Commanding 'Choral Fantasy,' almost great Missa Solemnis.......2005-11-13

As long as there is sunshine in the world, this Choral Fantasy from Bernstein and Serkin will survive. The work was a Serkin specialty; he loved it enough to make any performance a great event, and he never missed a season at the Marlboro Festival without presenting it as the summer's finale. Bernstein condcuts in the same spirit of exuberant joy. Five stars.

If only Bernstein's excellent 1960 Missa Solemnis rose as high. In musical terms it's almost there. Bernstein announces his intentions from the first bar. This is dynamic, thursting Beethoven without cathedral reverence. You are reminded throughout of the Ninth Sym., and as an itnerpretation Bernstein's is faster than either Klemperer or Karajan, his two chief competitors among major condcutors. However, his rivals boast better sound, soloists, and chorus.

Even in this credible remastering, the sonics are mediocre, wihtout presence or depth. Events seem to occur at a remove despite Bernstein's energy. The soloists look excellent on paper: Eileen Farrell, Richard Lewis, and Kim Borg are notable artists, and only the alto, Carol Smith, is an unknown. But they don't come together as an ensemble, and Bernstein, never one to be very interested in vocal soloists, hasn't melded them the way Klemperer and Karajan do. The women also sound too far from the microphone. Finally, the Westminster Choir, which was the best chorus in NY at the time, sounds disciplined and vigorous but no match for the world-class London and Vienna choruses on the rival sets. They tend to sound stiff, and the sopranos shriek through Beethoven's fiendishly high writing.

If you can listen through the flaws, this is an outstanding Missa Solemnis, but one can't pretend the flaws aren't there. Four stars.

Sony has generously thrown in a choral masterpiece by Haydn, the Theresa Mass, which belongs to a series of masses the composer wrote near the end of his career. All of them are great, but the Nelson Mass and the Mass in Time of War are better known than this one. Bernstein made excellent versions of all three. This 1979 recording from London features better sound, chorus, and soloists (including Lucia Popp and Robert Tear) than the Beethoven--it's very fine in every way and elevates the Theresa Mass to the exalted level it deserves. Five stars.

4 out of 5 stars A sterling Missa Solemnis and unmissable Theresienmesse........2002-03-04

I know that Beethoven's mighty "Missa Solemnis" may have drawn you towards this particular volume of the Bernstein "Royal Edition":and quite excellent it is to,despite the unfortunate sonic constraints of a less than ideal recording. However,my chief purpose in reviewing this 2CD set is to draw your attention to a gloriously exultant recording (digital this time, thankfully) of Haydn's tremendous "Theresienmesse".As well as been my favourite of his astonishing canon of "late" Masses,it is perhaps the one that best lends itself to Bernsteins grandiose approach.Truly symphonic in it's structure,we are taken on an exhilarating roller-coaster ride from "Kyrie" to "Dona nobis pacem".I still wouldn't be without the George Guest account on Decca or Trevor Pinnock on Archiv, but for the sheer joie de vivre that Bernstein gets out of that fantastic "Amen" fugue of the Gloria, and the profound pathos he wrings out of the "et sepultus est" in the Credo;this account is hard to beat. So,why not invest in this box-set before the deletion axe falls once more and deprives you of a "right royal treat".

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding performances.......1999-07-12

This is an absolutely wonderful set of recordings. The Missa Solemnis is outstanding, the Choral Fantasy has the crispness of a live recording, and the work by Haydn lacks nothing. This two-CD set is one of my favorites.
