This TWENTY-FIVE-TRACK CD-Compilation presents the marches, anthems and "Vaterlandslieder" that animated the German Empire of the Hohenzollern Emperors from 1871 to 1918, with PERIOD performances by the bands of the élite guard regiments of the Prussian Army, German soldiers' choruses and leading classical artists of the Wilhelmian era. The ancient recordings assembled in this compilation date from 1903 to 1915 and have been painstakingly restored and reengineered to maximize the surprising degree of fidelity already inherent to them WITHOUT altering their "imperial" ambience in ANY way whatsoever. This album presents the sounds of the ACTUAL military bandsmen and vocalists of Kaiser Wilhelm IIs Germany and also features many long-forgotten treasures of German military music, all presented EXACTLY as recorded in the German Empire of NINETY- TO ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO. As an added bonus the CD is accompanied by a lavish, twenty-page illustrated booklet that features a detailed discussion of German military bands, German martial music and the development of the German Empire after 1871.

This fascinating CD makes available the sounds of German military music from a century ago. Its indeed refreshing to have historical German martial music that is not Nazi era for a change! These recordings pre-date that period signifiantly, and thanks to the superb enhancement process involved they sound almost as good if not better. There is a lot of fascinating material here, all well researched and documented. The extensive booklet provides one of the most thorough backgrounds of German military music available in English. The selection of music provide a nice balance between well known and less well known material. We have a classic "Prussia's Glory" played by one of the Guards bands, as well as some lesser known compositions by famous composers like Blackenburg and Tieke. While "Alte Kameraden" would have been a stnadard to include here, I am just as glad the temptation was resisted. My only quibble is that the hymn "Heil Dir Im Siegerkranz" is presented in different versions three times! I think twice would have been enough. Missing is a good version of the official "Presentier Marsch" AM1 which was a standard at most reviews of the period. Perhaps there was not a version available for this collection. This is hardly a compliant for what is a fascinating collection. At last we can hear the German military band in its heyday. The folks at Brandenberg Historica are romantics at heart, and one can't help thinking they miss the old days of the Kaiser! Lets hope they can put together a volume two someday.

Modern reissues of vintage 78 rpm military band recordings have been around a quite while. Some are good and many not. With Gott, Kaiser, Vaterland, the folks at Brandenburg Historica have definitely raised the bar on this genre. It's an A+ product in all respects, technically & creative. The menu of the 25 recordings offered is a thoughtful & balanced mix of many well known marches of the era and other not so well known, all superbly produced. The pages of accompanying photographs commentary and notes on Imperial Germany, its martial music and the chosen recordings add much more to what is already an outstanding CD. Any discerning listener is ready to play this one again and again and await a volume 2.

I have been collecting German Military Music since I was stationed there,Nierstein Oppenheim, 1962.The new CDs of Pre WWI broaden my collection and this is a terrific selection of the early bands. The 78rpms could have been lost to us,but now we can retrieve the sounds of history. Thanks to Brandenburg Historica..I hope this is Vol 1.

Collectors of historical recordings of military music should rejoice at this release. I completely agree with the comments made on the previous review. There is simply nothing like this available for us collectors excepts perhaps for the cd they Brandenburg Historica sell of marches from Saxony. The marches are taken from recordings from the early part of the 19th century so make allowance for the sound, though some of the recordings have almost modern sound. I look forward to future releases. Thank you, BH!

Jean Guillou could be compared with the pianist Glenn Gould in some respects. He is an artist with his own unique ideas about performance practice: his registrations are unconventional, he pulls tempi about often to extreme degrees, he highlights (by means of solo stops) material that makes one pause and think - "Why have I never heard that in there before?" He plays entirely from memory (except his own compositions, and even with those he barely glances at the score whilst playing), and if memory lapses occur, he improvises in such a way that casual listeners never suspect that anything has gone wrong or that what they are hearing is not part of the piece they think they are hearing. His finger action is lightning-fast, and he dances on the pedals as if they were red-hot coals. Essentially, he re-interprets music in his own way, treating musical scores as little more than blueprints to vary and improvise upon as he sees fit. (It is worth noting that no-one - even one from among his pupils - has yet been able to imitate his playing convincingly.) And no matter where he performs (his recital career has taken him around the world and back again) he somehow manages to make the listener imagine that they are at home with him in Ste Eustache, by re-creating as nearly as possible the sound of that organ using the resources of the instrument set before him. Above all else, he is a deeply original musical thinker and an outstanding, living example of the French tradition of composer-organists, having studied with Dupré, Duruflé and Messiaen - two of the finest players and one of the most remarkable composers of the last century.

This disc is probably the best with which to sample Guillou's work both as performer and as composer. It reproduces the programme of the concert he gave in Ste Eustache (where he has been titulaire for nearly four decades) in 1989 to mark the rebuilding of the organ by J. van den Heuvel - a rebuild, interestingly enough, that Guillou oversaw and into which he had considerable input.

The programme reflects Guillou's enthusiasm for the music of J. S. Bach by including his best-known organ work (setting aside issues of true authorship that have recently arisen) - the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565. Right from the start, there is evidence of Guillou's quirky mind at work: the famous opening flourishes and spread diminished seventh chords are dispensed with very rapidly; the florid runs are taken more slowly and with a lot of detached playing (as opposed to the smoothness adopted by most organists for such passages). In the fugue, taken at a considerably fast tempo, there are numerous manual changes and surprising registrations; most notably, in the echo passages he plays about with delicate high flute sounds. Nicholas de Grigny's "Récit de Tierce en taille" is a typical representative of the French Baroque, and is played discreetly here, but still with much manipulation of tempo and momentum. Mozart's Fantasia in F minor bristles with energy and is subjected to similar 'creative' registrations as the Bach; the first movement of Widor's celebrated Fifth Symphony appears to rise and fall like waves ebbing as Guillou explores previously unseen nuances in the music, the result being that the work sounds more athletic than Romantic! To those who already know this music, these performances are guaranteed to be something of a surprise, or even a shock. However, on listening Guillou's own symphonic work "Hyperion," the listener can appreciate most of the unusual treatments given to the other music. "Hyperion" is a prime example of the extraordinary creative energy of this artist, as it is themed around the subject of "Fire" - defined by Guillou in his liner notes in metaphysical and philosophical terms, as well as depicting fire in the literal sense. The first and last movements ("Hermes" and "Agni-Ignis") are bold toccatas: the one being playful and full of contrast, the other being fierce and aurally shattering. The second movement is a melody that echoes the sort of thing one hears in the de Grigny work, flanked by austere motifs and a profound sense of mystery. The third movement is even more mysterious, taking a journey into the "Inflamed Soul" and exploring the full range of colours available on the magnificent Ste Eustache organ. This is by no means easy listening, but it is a sound world that etches itself into the mind and proves irresistable to all who like it to any degree.

The programme ends with a display of organ virtuosity that puts even Guillou's composition to shame. There are many recordings of Liszt's "Fantasia and Fugue on BACH," but none like this. The work exists in three versions: a first version for organ that is full of dazzling displays, a second version for organ in which Liszt purged some of those fireworks, and a third version re-composed with new fireworks and adapted for piano. Most organists play the second version as the "standard" one; some brave ones take on the challenge of the first version; a few pianists have tackled the piano version in like manner. On this disc, Guillou transcends them all by performing his own "syncretic" version, in which he skilfully transfers the pianistic effects of the third version to the original medium of organ. The result is horrifically difficult to play as a result of the transfer, but Guillou demonstrates the height of his virtuosity by making it sound effortless - and needless to say, his own quirks continue to emerge through the music so that the overall impression is that he is partly remembering and partly improvising the work. It is stunning beyond question.

Purists may have a hard time with Guillou; organists will be enthralled and dumbfounded by his sheer brilliance - all the more remarkable since he is in his seventies! At the core, however, whilst this is one of the oddest organ recitals available on CD, it is also one of the most unique and recommendable.

In this recording, the great Jean Guillou inaugurates the brand new Van den Heuvel organ in the Church of Saint Eustache, Paris. The recording is excellent! Guillou gives a highly diverse program: from Bach to Guillou himself, and he gives equal treatment to all of the composers. I have never heard any of these pieces played better. The first movement of Widor's fifth symphony has never been played better than on this recording. Guillou shows of the magnificent organ wonderfully!

This TWENTY-FIVE-TRACK CD presents the marches and songs of the golden age of German sea power, with PERIOD performances by illustrious units of the Imperial German Navy and leading military- and civilian ensembles of the German Empire. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" features not only the most famous parade- and presentation marches from the core repertoire of the Kaiser s "High Seas Fleet", but also many forgotten treasures of nautically flavored German martial- and patriotic music. Included here are period pieces celebrating the First World War-era exploits of the SMS Emden, Otto Weddigen s U-9 and the raider SMS Moewe; a 1907 recording of the "Flag Parade" of the Imperial German Navy (complete with drill commands and including the "Hollaendischer Ehrenmarsch", which was designated as the presentation march for all naval units by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1901); and a super-rare 1915 version of Hermann Loens battle song, "Wir fahren gegen Engelland", set to a score that has been completely overshadowed by Herms Niel's famous setting of that song from 1940. In addition to these rarities, the album features numerous German naval marches and concert band pieces of the Imperial era that are endowed with a distinctive maritime ambience, but are virtually unknown to today's listeners The performances assembled in this compilation were originally recorded between 1907 and 1917, and though the extremely rare early discs from which they have been transcribed date from the acoustic age of recording (that is, before the invention of electric microphones and pick-ups), they have been laboriously restored and reengineered to maximize the considerable fidelity already inherent to them without altering their historical authenticity in any way whatsoever. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" is accompanied by a TWENTY-FOUR PAGE BOOKLET (lavishly illustrated with many rare, never-before published photographs) which features detailed historical notes on the development of the Imperial German Navy during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II, its musical traditions and the background of the featured musical selections.

Brandenburg Historica deserves much credit for releasing this and other historical CDs. The music sounds great and the booklet is very well-done and informative. Anyone with an interest in military music should certainly get this. Bravo!

This is a very creditable work that preserves music of a bygone era. Original recordings are used to give an exact reproduction of the sounds of military music of the Kaiser's navy. Particularly interesting was the track where the U-9 march went off into a verbal reenactment of the U-boat attack.

The folks at Brandenburg Historica have done it again with Hoch Deutschlands Flotte. Twenty five (25) exceptionally re-mastered original 78 rmp recordings of navy marches, songs and other music, many by naval and seebattalion(marines)bands of the Kaiser's Navy. As with Brandenburg Historica's prior albums,the 19 pages of album notes and photographs are outstanding and second to none I have seen. It's a class act and does not get any better than this.

I just finished listening to this CD and it is a real gem. A rare look back at what the German navy was like in the Glory days of Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany. Any one that is a Military Music enthustiast and/or interested in the history of this time period should not pass up this treasure. All the selections on this CD are first rate.

Before the trial, before the accusations of molestation, there was a quaint little group east of Chicago called The Jackson Five. And before The Ed Sullivan Show, Goin' Back To Indiana, and before Motown, there were Five Brothers, driven by their stage parent from H-e-double hockey sticks, Joe Jackson. They were known as Ripples and Waves + Michael, and they made a record in Indiana in late 1966. This is the result, a piece of fluff that was supposed to sell the group to club and theatre owners on the Chitlin' Circuit. They may be buying, but we're not. It's over Joe. Just pray your boy doesn't get convicted, and savour your millions.

The Meadows, comprised of Todd Herfindal and Kevin Houlihan, along with some first rate musicians, have layed down some really fine tracks on this cd. Some truly infectious melodies with simply astounding vocal harmonies can be found here. The first three tracks are especially strong, most noteable of which is "Dreamer". This tune , which is reminiscent of THE BYRDS, has radio hit all over it. What a pleasant surprise this cd was, and a smart purchase for any lover of great rock music!!

      A variety of musical styles and a wide assortment of artists are brought together on this recording celebrating the first decade of my favorite record label-Dorian. It is all here: early music to twentieth century Latin American orchestral pieces. A lot of my favorite artists (Custer LaRue, The Baltimore Consort, Carol Thompson, Chatham Baroque, and Julianne Baird to name a few) are represented here. This disc is interesting and entertaining listening on its own merits. It is an indispensable introduction to the label. Either way, I recommend it.
