For all his flamboyance and showmanship, Leopold Stokowski was a serious visionary in many respects, not least for his advocacy of new music and new recording technologies. This disc is a case in point. Stokowski's 1967 performance of Stravinsky's evergreen ballet/fable was the first American recording made with the Dolby noise reduction system. It was issued on two LPs: one with English narration, the other in French. Vanguard's remastering of the English version sounds crisper than ever. The 85-year-old conductor's crackerjack ensemble (all premiere New York freelancers) navigates Stravinsky's tart, pared-down textures with vibrancy and panache. Madeline Milhaud makes a saucy narrator, ably partnered by Jean Pierre Aumont's Soldier and Met veteran Martial Singher's insidious Devil. --Dan Davis

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

I think this CD may be a bit choppy to "easy" listeners, but for anyone who has a sincere interest in delving into the musical senses of earlier generations it's VERY good! I recommend the entire NPR Milestones of the Millennium series to such aficionados.

Naxos is a wonderful label because it provides me with good music at a low price. Thus, I can buy approximately three thousand forty-two and three quarters Naxos CD's for the price of a single recording on the Deutsche Grammophone label. The problem with Naxos, however, is the inconsistency in performance quality.

Take for instance, this CD. On it we have L'histoire du Soldat and the Dumbarton Oaks concerto. I was not extremely impressed with the performance of L'histoire, but the Dumbarton Oaks rocked me all night long, in a sense. Therefore I recommend this disc. Worth every penny (and there aren't really many of them)!

The other amusing thing on this disc is how the music and speech are separated by track in L'histoire. This way, one can theoretically program his or her CD player to tell the story backwards. However, spending so much time doing such a fruitless activity is not recommended for those of you who are college students who should be doing much more productive things like studying or going to class (in other words, people like me).

Pierre Boulez is not only among the most important composers of the last 50+ years, but has also acquired a body of work as a conductor, that has resulted in an equal level of veneration.

Boulez' vision as a director seems to be the embodiment of Strawinsky's dogma. His striving for precision and balance and shunning of any gesture that is not indicated in the score has resulted in the epitaph "the iceman". I think this name calling is completely ridiculous. On the one hand people like Boulez continue to prove Oscar Wilde's lemma: tradition is nothing but a collection of bad habits. On the other, Boulez' approach is individual enough that it is always easy to guess it's him when listening "blindly" to a performance on the radio.

This cd contains some works that are lesser known- I disagree with the previous' reviewer distinction "lesser"- than le Sacre, L'oiseau de Feu, or Petrouchka. Yet to me they're not that unfamiliar. By the way Igor's IMHO best work, Apollon Musagète, isn't that familiar either to the audience at large.

This cd contains works from different phases of Strawinsky's career.

First the Scherzo fantastique opus 3 from 1907. This work is a true delight. It could be described as "hip Rimsky-Korsakov" (Igor's main teacher). Yet, so many of the elements that Strawinsky would explore so successfully later on are already here.

Next comes le Roi des etoiles from 1911. The work for male choir and orchestra centers on the risen Christ. It's a great blend between the old and new andsets the stage for Messiaen et al.

Due to financial problems Igor decided "to take his show on the road for a while" with concise versions of and orchestral compilations from some of his operas. The third work on the cd is orchestral digest of "the Nightingale" opera from 1918. One of this cd's many virtues is how well Boulez' approach allows the listener to follow the evolution of Strawinsky's style in just a decade. Both the works structure and orchestration are a long way from Rimsky.

The concert suite from L' Histoire du Soldat, also from 1918, conclude this disc. Another delight.

I am a great fan of Boulez and see this cd as another proof of him being the most prominent conductor of these and similarly "modern" works. His approach leads to color and clarity, perfect proportion, and precision in rhythm without any inkling of the mechanical. The Cleveland Orchestra joins him in performances that are simply perfect.

Finally, something about the recording. I know the level of the equipment that I'm fortunate enough to be able to use for playback. Remarks, like the ones by the previous reviewer, make me wonder what is failing him; his equipment, his ears or both. This recording is a marvel of timbral accuracy, clarity, deep and wide soundstage and sense of dynamics. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate it at the 9 level.
