5 out of 5 stars A great voice from the past silenced too soon.......2006-05-24

Here is a selection of popular lieder by Fritz Wunderlich, who died tragically at age 36, silencing one of the century's great voices. Surely no accounting of great artists who died before their maturity could be complete without Wunderlich's name.

Here he displays the wonderful timbre, range and sensitivity in his voice, which was conspicuously consistent across the range, regardless of the music he was interpreting or the venue in which he performed. The character of his voicing, enunciation and the structure of his tone and vibrato are virtually without fault throughout this recording, made in the studio with both accompanist and orchestra in 1963, three years before his untimely death.

I bought this to hear his interpretation of Beethoven's only song cycle, "To the Distant Beloved." The notes to this issue concentrate on the music-drama inherent in the songs. I wouldn't call this accounting of the Beethoven as dramatic as singers perform today. It is miles ahead of the inadequate concert performance recorded a year or two back by Goerne and Brendel but, in terms of drama, Wunderlich's work is neither as dramatic or episodic as recordings by Stephen Genz and Thomas Allen.

However, no singer quite has Wunderlich's instrument, a firm, supple and sensitive voice that adjusts to any music and any situation. It is also a bit unfair to compare the baritones above to Wunderlich's tenor.

I found equal pleasure in his renditions of Haydn's lesser known and lesser quality songs and the group of orchestral Strauss lied performed on this disk. Wunderlich performs the Strauss with far more drama and flair than the Beethoven, where he seems almost an introverted lost sould seeking lost love.

All told, this is a treasurable tome from one of the great singers in history in good mid-1960s sound that has dimension, quality and depth. The soloist may be a bit more forward than we epxect in the period-influenced new century but this is no matter. Here is an exhibition of singing that is above criticism and beyond approach. Even the greatest singers in history would weep gladly upon hearing this CD. So will you.

Fischer-Dieskau was one of the great lieder singers of all time. His singing Beethoven songs in good sound is a musical experience which a far greater writer than I would be needed to describe, perhaps Shakespeare himself.

This is a wonderful disc, featuring 16 songs by Beethoven, interspersed with solo piano works. The hour and 19 minutes would make a great evening in the theater; it's equally good at home. The songs range from the very familiar "Adelaide" (here played and sung quickly but elegantly, without sentimentality) and the very dramatic "An die Hoffnung" (practically a grand operatic scene) to the welcomely unfamiliar, "Selbstgespräch," composed when Beethoven was about 15 years old. Henschel's voice is a warm, dark baritone, capable of whispering intimately as well as booming forth; his diction and involvement are impressive. The three piano pieces, as handsomely played by Michael Schäfer as his accompaniments are for Henschel, are the strange, fascinating Fantasia, the more-familiar Andante favori, and a lovely Polonaise. They show up every so often, as little intermissions from the songs. Highly recommended. --Robert Levine

      5 out of 5 stars A Rare Beethoven Musicale.......2003-09-09

Beethoven (1770-1827) is revered for his large-scale works, such as his symphonies, string quartets and piano sonatas. His songs remain little-known. Yet Beethoven composed songs throughout his life. He turned to song at critical moments, with the best of his songs having an intimate, self-revealing character.

This album by baritone Dietrich Henschel and pianist Michael Shaeffer is beautiful music-making on little explored Beethoven songs and short piano works. The album consists of 16 songs including much of Beethoven's best work in this form. The album includes excellent program notes and backround on Beethoven as a composer of lieder together with text and translations of the songs. The album runs over 78 minutes, making for a joyous evening of listening.

Beethoven's great song cycle "An die ferne Geliebte" (to the distant beloved), op 98 is featured on this disc. This short cycle consists of six interconncected songs with the theme of the first song coming back in the final moments of the last. This is intimate, romantic music full of longing, sung to a beloved who is irretreviably far away. Beethoven wrote this music at the time of his "Immortal Beloved letter". It is difficult to hear this music as anything other than highly personal. The poet was an individual named Alois Jeteles, who may have written these lyrics at Beethoven's request.

The other major song collection on this album is Beethoven's opus 48, six songs set to poems by Christian Geller (1715-1769). These songs were written at the time of Beethoven's "Heligenstadt Testament," in which Beethoven writes of his impending deafness, his loneliness, and his determination to carry on. Geller's poetry is on religious themes, and Beethoven's music for most of these songs is highly reflective and intimate. (Beethoven's song "The Heavens Resound" is part of this set. I remember singing an arrangement of this music in a high school choir many years ago.)

There are many other beautiful songs on this album, including the almost operatic "An die Hofnung" (to hope), op. 94, Beethoven's early song "Adelaide", opus 46, and a sentimental early song, sometimes titled "I love you",WoO 123.

The album also features three of Beethoven's rarely heard short solo piano pieces. The selections include the Polonaise op. 89 and the improvisatory Fantasie, op. 77. These works date from a time in Beethoven's life that was rather fallow. But the are elegant, formalized pieces beautifully performed. In addition, the album includes Beethovens "Andante favori" WoO57. Bethoven planned this work as the slow movement of the Waldstein sonata. When friends advised him it was too long, he wisely removed it and wrote the meditative, highly unusual "Introductione" as the slow movement of that great work. Beethoven published the original slow movement separately. It is a long, florid piece and more than worth hearing in its own right.

On this album, the piano solos punctuate the lieder recital at just the right moments to compliment and set off the songs. This is a glorious CD. Its effect is that of being present at an evening musicale, with the listener participating in the performance of Beethoven in an intimate and rare way.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful!.......2002-01-28

Our family subscribed to the Beethoven complete collection when it was first published on LP's decades ago. The Lieder volume (still in my possession) was one of my favorites. I have been hoping for a CD version of this collection and am so glad to see it! As the downloadable excerpts demonstrate, these songs provide a simple presentation, but with depth of beauty and accomplishment that are a delight. Sometimes majestic, often playful, each song is a gem and many are sure to become your favourite themes in the world of music. We especially love Fischer-Diescau's performances; what a voice! The quartet arrangements bring out the pathos or frivolity of the genres in which they are used most excellently. If you like Beethoven's piano music, get the Lieder CD; the piano is lovely and the singing along with it add a dimension you are sure to love.

      5 out of 5 stars The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

Dieskau and Moore make Beethoven's music more beautiful than ever before. With the voices of angels, Moore and Dieskau sing exquisitely. Their work is exceptional on this cd. A must have for any fan of Beethovan.

I very much enjoy Wolfgang Holzmair and enjoyed his Beethoven and Haydn songs. They are not the last word in this music, however. Recordings of Beethoven's "An die Ferne Geliebte" by Thomas Allen and, especially, Stephen Genz, sweep away the Holzmnair version.

Both the Englishman Allen and the German Genz have bigger voices they use to greater advantage than Holzmair in the raw emotional sections of Beethoven's only song cycle. In addition, the Genz CD contains 18 of Beethoven's German songs and Allen's contains a wonderful concert recorded by British radio that includes songs by Haydn, Beethoven and Wolf.

Allen does not have Holzmair's sensitivity but he more than makes up for it by blowing the top of the building he sings in. His immense vocals are overpowering but still no match for Genz, one of the most brilliant young singers to come around in many years. He matches Allen's vocal power and exceeds Holzmair's sensitivity to the text.

Fans of Holzmair can hear him at his very best in the Schubert song cycle "Schwanengesang" on Philips, if it is still in print. This is a venue that is most well suited to Holzmair's voice, style and delivery and is a cycle where he can excel against all comers. In Beethoven, I'm afraid he is of the second rank.

4 out of 5 stars German lieder not by Schubert.......2001-06-05

Franz Schubert so dominates the world of German art song, both in quality and quantity, that it's easy to forget that other composers have contributed beautiful examples. Holzmair's current CD attempts to redress the balance by offering works by the great Viennese Classicists: Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, some familiar, others less so. Certainly Beethoven's _An die ferne Geliebte_ and Mozart's setting of Goethe's _Das Veilchen_ match anything by Schubert in emotional profundity and matching of music and text. The late Masonic "Cantata," K. 619, by Mozart is also a real find. Haydn's songs, while pleasant, occupy on the whole a somewhat lower musical plane.

Holzmair and his pianist Imogen Cooper offer elegant, highly polished performances. The baritone has a light, smooth voice, almost tenor-like in timbre (he soars to easy high Gs and A-flats), and though he is never less than fully committed emotionally, at times one misses a weightier tone quality, especially in the Beethoven cycle. His diction in the Haydn English songs is not always easily understandable (admittedly the poetry is florid and old-fashioned). Still, this CD makes for much enjoyable listening of frequently unfamiliar repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars What a sweet voice, fresh and earnest performance........2000-08-12

Holzmair gives us a very sweet and fresh performance here. His interpretation of some famous lieder( for example, Beethovan's An die ferne Geliebte ) gives new insight, and always in a delicate mood .In fact this is the best An die ferne Geliebte I've listened to. While with great Beethovan and fair Mozart, In my opinion the most outstanding part in this cd is Haydn's lieder. These sweet songs are almost forgotten by singers, and very few listeners know THERE WERE Haydn's lieder. Holzmair sings these songs with earnest and true understanding. And I think, If Holzmair could focus on words more, brings out the deep insight and power of every word in lieder, he will and must be a shining star in the lieder-singer world .Cooper's piano is excellent, the acostics balanced as well .

5 out of 5 stars what a beatiful cd by holzmair.......2000-06-14

holzmair with his new cd's make me love him more. his voice are very beatiful. Holzmair's plangent, tenorish, gently vibrating voice just the right combination to all of this songs. The interpretations themselves abound in verbal and musical perceptions yet nothing is ever in the least exaggerated. this will be certainly one of my favorite cd's of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Warm, engaging, colorful and satisfying performances!.......2005-12-06

Most recordings nowadays, even ones that are very good, seem like, well, recordings. There is an antiseptic perfection about them. The recording studio only seems to serve as a kind of veil between the music-making and the listener. With Timothy Ehlen's recording, one has the feeling that he is in one's living room making music for good friends. There is an immediacy , warmth and a constant search for colors that gives the effect of direct communication.

The three works on the CD all require a great deal of these qualities. Ehlen meets the challenges of all three, and lets us have fun listening. The Romantic poetry and ardor of the Schumann is amply exressed, especially in the last movement, which is really ravishing. Beethoven's Op. 101 is one of the composer's most personal statements, and that personal quality is abundant in Ehlen's performance. When recording a Beethoven sonata, it is easy to fall into the trap of perfecting, refining and reducing all the life out of it in an effort to be properly reverential. Ehlen's performance, especially of the first movement, is both fresh and refreshing.

Yet my favorite part of the CD is the Beethoven-Liszt "An die ferne Geliebte." The heartfelt "Romantic" qualities (and it is one of the first truly "Romantic" pieces) are given full reign in Ehlen's performance. It is absolutely irresistable. One hears the expressivity and direct communication of the emotion of the text that a great Lieder singer would bring.

This is my new favorite recording of Schumann's Fantasie. The Sonata in A Major is also exceptional. I'd highly recommend this CD.
