Editorial Reviews
Album Description
CRI presents a new disc of the artistry of saxophonist, Dan Goble. The five works on the disc span the wildly divergent modern performing styles created for the instrument. Included are works by two Pulitzer-Prize winners, Charles Wuorinen and John Harbison, as well as the jazz legend, Miles Davis. This disc walks the line that divides new music and jazz techniques. The newest talents, represented on the disc by composers Charles Ruggiero and Kevin Jay Issacs, demonstrate the growing interest in jazz instrumentation in the works of new composers. All works are accompanied by Jeff Hellmer on piano. Both performers have played and studied extensively in the jazz world. Goble has won numerous awards and is currently on the jazz faculty at Western Connecticut State University. Hellmer has previously been a featured performer on jazz discs and is presently the director of the jazz studies program at the University of Texas at Austin. Of the five works on the disc, 4 Wheel Drive is a debut recording and written especially for Goble and Hellmer. This disc represents a bold and exciting departure for both musicians from their earlier work exclusively in the jazz idiom.

A singing duo of Amanda Barrett on mandolin and dulcimer, and Abby DeWald on guitar, this is the second release by The Ditty Bops. They draw liberally on genres of yore, hopping from western swing to vaudevillian theatrics, jazz, and folk music. They mine a vein similar to what Dan Hicks was doing with his Hot Licks in the early seventies, though their compositional sensibilities embrace a wider realm. Sympathetically produced by Mitchell Froom (who also plays keyboards, though the dazzling turn at the piano on "Aluminum Can" is by Greg Rutledge), they're joined by some of the finest players to be found in Los Angeles, including the ever-apt percussion of Elvis Costello's longtime drummer, Pete Thomas. While the title song opens the set on a quaint note, by the third number, "Fall Awake," it becomes clear that The Ditty Bops are not to be pigeonholed. The set's one cover, Boudleaux and Felice Bryant's "Bye Bye Love," is sweet but breaks the parade of their own resonant and mysterious songs. --David Greenberger

Album Description

"Combining a magical attic's worth of dusty musical idioms, iridescent golden harmonies and a quirky lyrical worldview, The Ditty Bops provide a refreshing antidote to the misbegotten, soul-grinding notion of thinking you know what happens next.... Abby DeWald (guitar) and Amanda Barrett (mandolin/dulcimer) embody the simple Saturday afternoon pleasures—of thrift store finds and getting lost in the library—with their amalgam of ragtime, jazz, vaudeville, Western swing and folk, but it would sell the Bops short to lump them in with nostalgia-driven absolutists." (Austin Chronicle) The Ditty Bops are different, way different, and that makes the singing-songwriting-playing duo of Amanda Barrett and Abby DeWald special. On their second album, Moon Over The Freeway, co-produced by Mitchell Froom (Suzanne Vega, Crowded House, Elvis Costello) as was their 2004 self-titled debut, The Ditty Bops are strangely, wonderfully captivating.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have!.......2007-05-23

I first saw the Ditty Bops on LOGO and fell in love with them. Even after listening to my favorite song of theirs I still don't think my head's too big. I love their humor but most of all their music. Check them out. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars over the moon..........2007-04-22

i can't believe i never got around to reviewing this album a year ago when it first came out. i saw the ditty bops open for nickel creek at the johnny mercer theatre in savannah, georgia and i bought their debut cd right on the spot. on the way home, i was utterly flabbergasted at how gorgeous their voices sounded coming through my car speakers. words fail me, but suffice to say that i was thrilled to realize that their second cd would be out within the month. i was also a little worried that maybe the dreaded sophomore slump would rear its ugly head...but the ditty bops more than beat that particular curse.

MOON OVER THE FREEWAY is every bit as amazing as the first cd and over the last year i have purchased and given away over a dozen copies of each to various friends (i did the same thing with BRIAN WILSON PRESENTS "SMILE" awhile back). listening to their wonderfully inventive harmonies and instrumentation is a cure for ANY case of the blues (or the blahs). anyone who thinks this album is lacking in comparison to the first is just deluded. i guess it's like people who claim that RUBBER SOUL was vastly superior to REVOLVER (they are both amazing albums, sillies).

do yourself a favor and buy two copies of the Ditty Bops cds. keep a set for yourself and give a set to someone you truly love.

5 out of 5 stars These chicks are hot!.......2007-03-30

Great CD! Just as good as their first one! Hot chicks with talent are great!

3 out of 5 stars A mix of gems and rocks.......2007-01-18

After a very impressive debut 2 years ago, I was thinking the Bops would come out with an even stronger release. On this CD, Abby and Amanda still have the charm that got me hooked on their style and innovative lyrics, but some of their songs just don't seem to get anywhere musically. Still, "Bye Bye Love" is so catchy that it stays with you all day. "Waking up in the City" is very clever too and so is "Your Head's Too Big." For a fan, this one culd have been better but is still worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Every song on this album is GREAT.......2006-11-22

I heard the Ditty Bops' song "Waking Up in the City" on the radio and decided to purchase the entire album. I listen to it over and over ... such a charming album with beautiful melodies and harmonies. Some of the lyrics are hilarious as well. If you like to tap your fingers and bounce your knee to songs, this is the album for you.

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-04-18

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Based on Freeway's introduction to the rap world (a verse on "1-900-Hustler" from Jay-Z's The Dynasty, where he provides a tutorial on how to deal drugs effectively), it's a challenge not to think that he's just another in a long line of "devout" MCs who debauch with the best of them. But few of the others rap with the same sense of urgency or have such a distinctively mesmerizing yet whiny vocal drone. On "Free," Freeway reminds us why we endured a full year of delays before this debut hit the streets, flipping schizophrenic flows over a pounding Just Blaze beat and an even catchier female vocal sample. You may love his off-kilter flow or you may hate it (think Ol' Dirty Bastard), but you can't deny that Freeway has rhyme skills, especially on burners like "What We Do," his shady street-life redemption opus featuring thug adviser Beanie Sigel. His storytelling capabilities arguably rival that of his mentor Jay-Z on "Life," an open letter to a neighborhood homey who's doing a lifetime bid. However, this Philly MC's fixation on tales of dope peddling, prison, or street life may make it a bit too hustle-centric for some. --Dalton Higgins

this is a str8 classic, all the tracks can bump none to be skipped. the songs i feel are 10/10 are free, what we do, you dont know, victim of the ghetto, life, line em up, hear this song, full effect, all my life. that leaves not many left. so classic!

I can't stand this whinin a** n****. This dude has the most annoyin voice I could think of right now in hip hop. The features is what keeps this album from bein a total dud. I don't recommend this to anyone. I say just download what we do.

4 out of 5 stars Freeway has his own unique style.......2006-04-29

Freeway are a typical MC for the streets. He has credibility in order, and has managed to found his own, unique style. His energetic and unorthodox flow might act overwhelming, but when you get used to it, it's straight fire. Freeway doesn't give a d**m about structure, and everything doesn't even rhyme, but still is sounds amazingly tight. Free only need the right beat, and for that, Roca-A-Fella is ideally a great starting point. Just Blaze' production fits him perfect, and Blaze did 10 joints on Philadelphia Freeway. Besides that Kanye West and Bink did two beats each, while Black Key and Ruggedness contributed with one beat each. There's nothing to complain about the production. Just Blaze both impresses and disappoints. "On My Own", which features Nelly, might be the most boring Blaze beat ever. Luckily his other contributions stands in another league. Songs like "What We Do" and "We Get Around" gets stuck in your head, and "Flipside" featuring Peedi Crakk, is just plain crazy. I've heard the song again and again and still wont get sick of it.

There's too many good songs here, to mention each and every. There's also too many guests to name them all. Of course Jay-Z and State Property are featured, but Freeway stands on his own. Philadelphia Freeway was a very mature debut. It's a lot a sad ghettostories here, but also a club banger here and there. What fits Free best, I really don't know. Maybe next time he should exert his energetic flow even more and gamble more to get his own identity. Buy it if you slept on it.

4 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Debut.......2006-02-25

This cd is not all that bad but it is also not that good. Freeway is kinda hard to listen to because he is not that great. He has a decent sound to him and he spits nice lyrics but his style is not very unique and it gets boring. Thank God this album has great featured artists like Nate Dogg & Snoop Dogg. The truth is this album is only good for the first 6 songs and the track Full Effect. After "We Get Around"... id reccommend turning it off because this where his style gets old. It is decent and if you find it used... pick it up, otherwise focus on better albums before investing in this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Bliss.......2007-01-14

In the span of just a couple weeks, I've gone from complete ignorance of this band to checking out every one of their records from my local library and listening compulsively. And that's saying something because if you know anything about Grandaddy, you're probably aware that it takes patience and repeated listening to acquire a taste for this band. I've listened to all except `Sumday', but I'm assured that it's just as awesome as the rest of their other albums. Every record of Grandaddy has several infectious tunes, but this album in particular is one that I keep coming back to. It may not be as cohesive or thematic as `The Sophtware Slump' but the blips and bleeps in combination with relentless drums and overwhelming guitar work have really hit home with me. It's strange that although this is their first release, there is ominous feeling of nostalgia, despair, and resignation that runs throughout the recording, as is evident in the song `Everything Beautiful is Far Away'. But there is balance as well, after listening to the hypnotizing `Collective Dreamwish...' which contrasts this feeling with defiance. This song conveys an exhausted feeling of contentment singer Jason Lytle feels while just playing his guitar, drinking beer and counting stars all alone out in the countryside. I agree with another reviewer in that this record really does near perfection. As long as one can get used to the myriad of electronic effects the band so subtly and craftily uses, this album won't grow old. Grandaddy has not made a recording that isn't lacking; all are extremely solid. Pure bliss, this one.

5 out of 5 stars Sci Fi country lullabies.......2006-01-13

Picked up the mantle that Pavement dropped circa Wowee Zowee without sounding too much like Pavement... Grandaddy really had something good with this album and Sophtware Slump. The songs are simple but not boring. Their lo-fi sound and Jason Lytle's fragile voice makes for a perfect combination and the resulting tracks sound very sad and distant while still rocking along in most cases. This album feels very much about place and it's an enjoyable experience to step into Grandaddy's world for a little while.

5 out of 5 stars Is there more perfect music out there?.......2005-12-26

Honestly, tell me cause I love this stuff. These guys managed to dodge so much crap in the music industry and stay on top of their game from album to album. But this. Truly their finest work. It's absolutely remarkable. "Summer Here Kids", "Everything Beautiful is Far Away", "AM 180" are all jams that I could not live without hearing from time to time, it's a timeless piece of music that is about joy and happiness coming out of your radio.
More importantly it's absolutely gorgeous songwriting intertwining over and over again, over this wall of music you can't escape cause the sounds are so familiar and exist somewhere between a computer and guitar. It's the transformation from a folk to more sonic sound and it's almost like Grandaddy is singing merrily the whole way there.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but still worth it.......2005-11-10

Under the Western Freeway makes me think of playing Mario Brothers on an acid trip. It's saturated Nintendo-esque sounds are defintaley interesting...though maybe a little overused. Less catchy than Sophtware and Sumday, which could be a good or bad thing. However, if you are a Grandaddy fan, I definatley suggest adding this to your collection.

Yo my man is hot u can't hate on him. His flow is vicious he real. His lyrics is just raw and the best part about it he signed to the Rock. U got to cop 3 copies one for the crib one for the whip and one just cause it's a classic. Holla

I have to say this is easily one of the most anticipated albums of the year besides 50 cent but this album does live up to the hype. Just Blaze takes production for bulk of the album but some of the other producers do their thing on the album. One standout track is "All My Life" feat Nate Dogg and I have to say that Nate Dogg sounds really good on this song. The best song on this album being"What we do" with Jay-z and Beanie Siegel. There are some forgettable songs though like "You got me" and "On my own" feat Nelly. The lyrics are good but the Nelly chorus drags the song down. But despite these songs, this is a very solid debut by all counts and definitely one of the best debuts in a while. And the beats on this album are incredible. This has to be the Rocafella's best album since the first blueprint.

      5 out of 5 stars On a Train.......2006-08-03

I think 'On a Train' is beautiful. They have the guts to play the same tune and lyrics looping for 16+ minutes. It's something you don't expect and I found it a joy to linger on the feeling they were trying to share. The melody in the background is bliss.

Staring at the Sun is a really good song. I'm not going to debate that. It is, however, available on at least two other CD's of theirs that I've seen.

      GET ONE OF THEM INSTEAD!

The other two songs on this CD are so strange that you can't listen to them earnestly. You can go ahead and preview them, but I can tell you that what you hear in the preview might as well be the entire song. Don't trick yourself. They don't go anywhere, they don't pick up, what you hear is all there is.

      5 out of 5 stars awesome ska.......2000-06-07

This CD is really one of my favorites I own. It has great solos, and the harmonica is awesome on some of the tracks too. It did take some getting used to for me, but now I absolutely love this CD. Go buy it, cause I've been hearing bad things about their new CD, "Stay Tuned."

      3 out of 5 stars Well, it's a live one...........1998-12-25

This was kind of disappointing on a couple of levels. One the performance was only so-so. And two, all the curse words are bleeped out. What is up with that? That kills me. It's not like there were a lot but a blaring bleep in a song is irritating. I think I'm old enough to deal with a few naughty words. But whatever. The Show's recorded aren't all that bad. I recommend that if you can pick up LGB "does the spiral live" to get that one for a good show by the boys.

5 out of 5 stars Music that makes me happy and makes me want to dance........1998-10-21

This cd is a must for all ska lovers. Let's Go Bowling has the power to change my mood - put a smile on my face and a skip in my walk. I highly recommend all of their cds.

      5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2005-12-06

This album is quite refreshing and has something for every one. The Music is first class and the artist has a very unique and powerhouse voice. The tracks are all meaningful and don't talking about beer/drinking and a lot of the country music stuff. My favorate track are: Freeway Bound, Kickin' Back, Mama and Excited. However the whole CD is tops in my book. Its a good gift idea.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Across the Board.......2005-10-10

The songs are excellent from all perspectives: lyrics, sound, score, arrangement, tone and composition. This is my first Country music purchase and I am VERY pleased. Kids also love this - especially before or after watching Spirit.

I look forward to more albums by this artist.
