This cd wasn't exactly what I was looking for, it does not really help you fall asleep. Some of the music can be annoying and it could have been more soothing.

I should have paid attention to the two negative reviews. This CD doesn't put me to sleep at all--in fact, it keeps me awake. I find myself listening to the music instead of going to sleep.

One of the pieces has irritating and dissonant passages mingled with relaxing, soothing passages. Also the music changes tempo and volume quite often, which would wake me up if I did start to drift off.

Since I expected something that would put me to sleep, listening to this is upsetting, because I wasted my money.

However, since it works well for most reviewers, I figure I must hear things differently, or have a harder time falling asleep than most. Maybe if I listened to it enough to get used to it, it might work better.

I would like to find something totally soothing and relaxing--maybe I need actual recordings of water or rain, but I prefer music. Any suggestions?

This CD collection is so effective that I still have not made it through the first CD to listen to the second one. It's very relaxing music and helps me fall asleep every night.

but no silver bullet. FOR ME. Lovely selection of tunes, and I find them quite enjoyable and relaxing, but they just don't "knock me out". I own a variety of "sleep CD's" but real music seems to be just too stimulating when I am having trouble sleeping. I do better with guided imagery. Yesterday, though, I brought it over to my mom's place and laid down to listen to it with her, because she was so stressed out. She was asleep before the third number!

My son has a hard time falling asleep at night. The CD's have helped significantly in allowing him to have a good nights sleep. Highly recommended!

I notice almost no response to Cala's ongoing series of Stokowski reissues, now numbering into the dozens. This English label, in cooperation with major record companies (this Swan Lake was licensed from RCA) and the Stokowski Society, has unearthed number treasures. More than nyone they are restroing Stokowski's reputation, erasing decades of caricature as the "man who conducted with Mickey Mouse" in fantasia.

Heere we have 57 min. of Swan Lake from 1954-55 with the NBC Sym., recorded just after the departure of Toscanini. Strings were reduced to save money, which is too bad, but the sprightly woodwind solos stand out all the more. Stokowski indulged in a complete rearrangement of numbers, putting the ballets three acts in reverse order--it makes no sense on stage but sounds fine here. the orchestra plays beautifully, and the conducting is vivid and lively, as good as his wonderful Sleeping Beauty from 1947. Too bad that the sonics are only middling, sounding rather thin. But they are far better than Toscanini's from Studio 8-H, being not nearly as cramped and boxy.

Usually I find that Tchaikovsky's music tempted Stoki into all kinds of rhythmic distortions, but not here. This is a 'straight' Swan Lake, faster than the usual, that's beautifully phrased from beginning to end. Highly recommended.

            This ten CD boxed set contains the first batch of releases in DG's "Musik...Sprache der Welt" series. Aside from a flimsy paperboard box/container and a booklet featuring an essay on DG's post-WWII recording activities, the packaging is identical to the single disc releases. I have reviewed eight of the ten individual titles included in this collection:

            We were quite disappointed with this collection. Although the mix of music is good, the sound quality on several of the recordings was unacceptable and the volume fluctuates. For instance, "Carmina Burana" was either deafening or completely inaudible.

            This album has some fabulous music on it, all by first-rate peformers. There isn't a disappointing cut on it, and it would be particularly a great gift for a person just embarking on an exploration of classical music in all its glory. It leaves the listener wanting to buy in their entirety all of the works included on the CD, and I don't think that you can ask for much more than that from a compilation. I'm ready for Volume II!

            All of the pieces are true classics, and there is a varied selection. Most of the pieces are familar works, and the essence of the collection is far above your typical collection of classical hits. If you had to buy this same collection independently it would cost you a fortune. Save yourself the money, and trust that this CD contains all of the finest selections you will ever need to start off your basic collection.

            Another ST. CLAIR classical music CD featuring the ubiquitous anonymous orchestra. This company claims that "...we have compiled an entertaining and educational recording which children will listen to time after time." Can't say how absolute such a statement is. Some of this stuff isn't the most approachable for any adult newcomer, let alone a small child.

            This set should have FUN tunes on it, like the Minute Waltz, Marche Militaire, Mozart's opener from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik or his dozen variations on the 1761 French melody "Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman," which is more famously known as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. No-- from the Great Amadeus our kiddies are spoonfed the lugubrious sections of his 40th symphony, Elvira Madigan, and a string quartet! Heady stuff, yes?

            Perhaps this CD should be called "NAPPING TO THE CLASSICS." Just reading that playlist is sure knocking me out! Brahms Lullabye..... Four Seasons-Winter..... Al-bi--no---n.......zzzzzzzzzz.... (2½ twinkles)
