Album Description
"an absolute joy" - Music and Musicians Hi-Fi News and Record Review Record of the Month The sixteenth-century madrigal was an Italian form. The term `madrigal' was loosely applied to a wide variety of music, but generally denoted a polyphonic setting for four or more voices of an amorous or pastoral text which was closely depicted in the music. Thomas Morely transplanted the form into England in the 1590s; this marked the beginning of the brief but brilliant flowering of the English madrigal. Between the 1590s and the early 1620s, twenty composers published a total of 36 books of madrigals, after which the form virtually disappeared. Some of these composers, such as Morely and Weelkes, followed the Italian model closely; others, such as Byrd and Gibbons, mostly stayed with the simpler English form of the consort song, where the tune remains in one voice, word-painting is not used, and strophic form is preferred to the continuous structure of the madrigal proper. Among the twenty-one items selected for this recording there are examples of several types of piece,! ranging from true Italianate madrigals such as Too much I once lamented, via more popular `balletts' such as Fyer, fyer!, to the simple part-songs like A little pretty bonny lass. The variety, imagination, and inspired blending of poetry and music characteristic of the best of the `English Madrigal School' afford a particular kind of delight in performance, shared equally by singer and listener

THE introduction to secular renaissance music.......2005-03-09
There is not a global survey of secular music in Renaissance: every trend and national nuance is here. This CD compete for "The most varied musical program in history" prize!!!. King's singers produces a nice sound. Surely I like more the hilliard ensemble sonic landscape: they are more "hooty" and proyect more clearly the sound (with less vibrato) but never produced a more varied set like King's singers. If you have space for only 1 Renaissance CD, it MUST be this. You must purchase this cd: it is a reward for such an intelligent programme!!!!
A fun introduction to European madrigal styles!.......2002-11-28
Joined on about a third of the numbers by instrumentalists billed as the "Consort of Musicke", the King's Singers offer a variety of compositions from each country they "visit", some upbeat and others gently reflective. The vocalists are countertenors Jeremy Jackman and Alastair Hume, tenor Bill Ives, baritones Anthony Holt and Simon Carrington, and bass Colin Mason. Their presence and theatricality in interpreting the material are delightful, and these men blend together impeccably, with a clear, straight tone and flawless enunciation. You can actually understanding the words without reading along in the insert booklet (provided, of course, that you're familiar with the language being sung!) Favorites of mine from the thirty four tracks include the Italian "Lirum bililirum" and "Il bianco e dolce cigni"; the English "Of all the birds that I do know" and "Now is the month of Maying"; "La, la, la, je ne l'ose dire" and "Il est bel et bon" from France, "Tres morillas m'enamoran" from Spain; and the German "Tanzen und Springen". In addition to this release, this fine group has an extensive discography. Check out their other recordings too!
A great recording.......2002-07-25
All male voice with perfect technique. Some madrigals are sung a capella, though most of them with accompaniment. The accompaniment, on renaissance instruments, is perfect, just like the singing. Excellent renditions of Mateo Flecha's La Bomba and Gastoldi's Amor vittorioso. Highly recommended
A Terrific European Madrigal Sampling.......2002-03-23
Most madrigals one hears tend to be either in Italian or English. Not so on this album, perhaps one of the best European madrigal samplers (if not the only one)in existence. Some well known English and Italian madrigals can be found, of course. But the true treasure of this album is its inclusion of French, German -- and most rarely, Spanish -- madrigal offerings. Combine this repertoire, then, with the accurate sonorities of the King's Singers and one finds treasure unbounded. An album that is infinitely enjoyable. Liner notes and translations are included.
A masterpiece of Madrigals.......2001-09-02
I am a university student and a vocal performance major, and this album represents exactly what madrigal singing was at the time. It also contains a diverse array of languages from Italian to Englis to Spainish. Having worked with Simon Carrington personally i know that the styles of the madrigals on this album are accurate. Also, its just really fun to listen too! As an even bigger plus, its cheap for poor students! I highly recommend buying this.

Customer Reviews:
You don't need a Wayback machine.......2001-12-05
Just get a CD like this one to get a broad brush review of the popular hits of the late 1500s. While I would have liked a few more recorder pieces, almost every cut was interesting in its own way. If you want just one early music CD with English songs, this is probably the one to get.
A Very Good Compilation of Elizabethan Music.......2001-09-27
"Elizabeth's Music" is a great cd to listen to if you are an enthusiast of ballads, the lute or old fashioned jigs. This cd really puts you in the alehouses, courts and courtyards of the Elizebethan age. The music is preformed well and the voices are very authentic and beautiful. The CD loses one star because most of the songs are on other Dorian-released CDs! I got the cd and found out most of the songs were the exact same ones on my "Shakespeare's Music" CD and other Dorian CDs. Ah well. All Elizabethan enthusiasts will enjoy this eclectic collection.
Light classics with historical charm.......2000-01-07
Really enjoyed this CD. Light and pleasant, without being too pretentious. Great background music for home or office.

Those Renaissance Europeans really knew how to celebrate spring, a fact colorfully evident in popular music of the period from countries such as England, Scotland, and France. This varied and technically polished recording of vocal and instrumental songs and dances features selections from all of the above regions--and thankfully mixes many unfamiliar tunes among a few favorites such as Morley's "Now is the month of maying" and the title song. The seven-member Toronto Consort demonstrates the precise phrasing and well-developed sense of blend and balance that mark a mature ensemble of intelligent singers. It also offers impressive harpsichord, lute, and recorder performances. Highlights include the charming "La rousee du joly mois de may" for vocal ensemble and lute and "La terre n'agueres glacee," an unusually melancholic take on spring, through the eyes--and heart--of a lonely lover. The recording places the voices very close to the listener, and not everyone will appreciate the animal noises and "authentic" accents used in "Willy prithee go to bed," but most listeners will find this an entertaining and spirited celebration. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Neither frisky nor lusty.......2006-02-16
The instrumental tracks on this CD are lovely, but the vocals leave a lot to be desired in terms of style. They have taken very much of a choral approach- too formal a sound, in my opinion (stiff, formal, acoustics very much like in a church). If you enjoy renaissance vocals as recorded by Custer LaRue of the Baltimore consort, then this is not your style.
Sweet and sparkling!.......2002-11-25
Frisky songs of love and springtime in the form of madrigals, ballads and jaunty dances. I can't help but smile when listening to the rich, cheerful, heartfelt music of the Toronto Consort. On this recording in particular, the recorder virtuosity of Allison Melville stands out as she imitates birds in several numbers with well-placed chirps and flutter-tonguing. Tenor Paul Jenkins also gets a chance to shine as an improvisational harpsichord soloist. This spirited ensemble continues their seasonal approach to recording with their subsequent release, "The Little Barley-Corne: Winter Revels from the Renaissance". For other fun madrigals from the Renaissance, you might also enjoy the King's Singers in "All At Once Well Met: English Madrigals", and "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain, Germany" (with the Consort of Musicke).
Music for May!.......2002-03-14
I know, I know...May is still away off. But March is doing its best to destroy things around here right now, so I'm still looking forward to May...And this is the perfect music for its coming. The Toronto Consort are excellent musicians: another trophy in Dorian's stable of remarkable talent. If you've never heard this music--get it. You will not be sorry.
O Lusty May/ Toronto Consort.......2000-06-11
This music selection is extremly fun and light hearted. It has not left my stereo for 4 months. The vocals are amazing, especially the first soprano solos. I am using this CD during my wedding reception this summer which has a Renaissance theme. Two thumbs up!
