5 out of 5 stars The first steps!.......2006-12-18

Bruno Walter was undeniably, one of the most ardent defenders of Bruckner' s music and as well as the rest of his contemporary colleagues found a major resistance of this side of the Atlantic than Europe. And after the WW2 this tendency increased itself notably. Whereas Gustav Mahler became a spiritual guide for many people, Bruckner was relegated to a low profile status, reserved for special occasions.

Whereas the historical circumstances in which his music began to show itself it should not amaze us. The first three decades of the XX Century were filled of innovativeness: The raising of the cinema, the commercial aviation, the name of Stravinsky and the raising of new musical ensembles were not exactly the most favorable conditions for Bruckner ' s music blossomed. On the other hand, the awful fact Bruckner' s Seventh Symphony was so beloved by Hitler (believe or not) worked out as a negative boomerang for him that established conventional barriers that avoided his access to major horizons.

But despite all the odds, Walter engaged himself over and over and his efforts were compensated at last, because among other virtues, the American audiences were aware about his generosity as human being. And so (as soon as Horenstein was labeled as Mahlerian supreme exponent, but despite all the odds also contributed in the Fifties with major intensity), undertook the aim to bring him to the great audiences. All of us know how the Bruckner's language permeated an entire generation during the WW2 and for many conductors (specially Furtwangler became a spiritual warrior against the Nazi regime), Bruckner received another treatment and we realize how directors of the stature of Van Beinum, Abendroth or Knapperstbusch included him in many concert programs, the audacious and rush in North America was not so accelerated.

In many ways it might be stated Walter became Eighth' s musical ambassador, while Horenstein did it the same respect the Ninth.

So according these factors, this musical document has special importance due Bruckner was slowly but gradually accepted among the reduced circle of audiences in the rest of the nation.

Don' t miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Bruckner Symphony 8-Bruno Walter.......2004-01-30

You cannot go wrong with this recording, consisting of Anton Bruckners' greatest symphony and conductor! This Bruckner 8 is from early 1941, and is a little wanting in the sound quality department-but what does that matter, really. In this recording you have a performance unsurpassed by anybody. Bruno Walter achieves what many other Bruckner conductors only hint at-a wonderfull warmth and spirituality that shines through incredibly, a robust, truly romantic dynamics that makes you wish you had been there to hear it.
I have struggled many years to find a Bruckner 8 like this one(there are alot of bad versions out there), and this Music and Arts re-issue has improved sound quality over previous pressings like AS Disc, for example.
What the initial reviewer Olin Downes had dismissed as "too sentimental" was totally unfair-this is Bruckners music shining through and speaking of a lofty, sublime vision-you have to hear it to really understand the Eighth. It makes all those other inferior versions out there a total waste of time. (Abendroth, Schuricht and Koussevitzky are the only others that come close to it.)

4 out of 5 stars Bruno Walter conducts Bruckner 4 and Wagner.......2004-04-15

At the time of this recording-1940-Bruno Walter was one of the few conductors based in North America that really promoted the music of Anton Bruckner in a strong and important way. (Koussevitzky was also notable) In this recording of the "Romantic"Symphony No. 4 with the NBC Orchestra, you can tell that the conductor was really in touch with the sublime vision in Bruckners' music-to me, there is a kinship with spirituality and nature that is special to this very special composer.
The playing of the orchestra is really inspired and uplifting-how they must have enjoyed playing under Walter.(It shows) Even the potentially hostile critic Olin Downes, who could be quite negative about Bruckner, wrote of it being an uplifting performance. Also, for 1940, the sound quality is not too bad.
After hearing this, I am so greatfull that it exists; there were not too many Bruckner recordings of any sort at the time.
The orchestral excerpts from Wagners' Tristan und Isolde are from 1944 with the New York Philharmonic, and again, sound quality and performance are really something.(Though, I admit, I really bought it for the Symphony)
I definitely recommend this CD-a real slice of musical history!

3 out of 5 stars BRUCKNER SYMPHONY 9 AND BEETHOVEN-BRUNO WALTER.......2004-07-19

Please disregard my previous review of this recording. As time has passed, this Bruno Walter performance has grown on me. This Bruckner 9, to my mind now, has some of the qualities of inner dynamism and spirit of his later, studio recording. Though not in the later studio recordings' class, this recording is not a waste of time.
This Bruckner 9 has some of that typical Walter warmth and spirituality, coupled with the New York Philharmonics' legendary precision.

1 out of 5 stars Bruno Walter Conducts Beethoven and Bruckner.......2004-02-04

I bought this recording, mainly for the reason that I feel that Bruno Walter is the best Bruckner conductor there ever was.(his Beethoven, for me, is usually dissapointing) I still feel this way, despite the fact that this Bruckner 9 is very, very much a letdown-in all aspects.
The Beethoven overture is passable, at best, but the Bruckner! This qualifies as Walters' worst Bruckner recording, ever. The performance is dull, uninspired, and limp, and the sound quality-despite the recent restoration-is a letdown. What a bad introduction to this conductor, if this is your first Walter purchase.
Allow me to say, that his later stereo, studio recording is an incredible improvement in all areas-a breath of fresh air, compared to this.
This is definitely Bruno Walter on a bad day.
