Superlative Performances.......2007-03-07

Superlative Duo in superlative music - really sums up these performances. The Debussy is sublime from the "Six Epigraphes antiques" the exotic,"Lindaraja", the spirited,"Marche Ecossaise",the charming, "Petite Suite", to the modern abstract,"En Blanc et noir". The Ravel is as ravishing and the music's strong linear sweep is revealed in two pianos or four hands(with Ravel's "Frontispice" for two piano with one hand - an unusual combination). This is music that brightens up your aural realm!

An overlooked set.......2006-05-04

Lortie's technique is assured and (I say this as a compliment) his approach seems to take Ravel's advice to heart: it suffices to perform the music rather than [over]interpret it. Ranks up there with Simon, Thibaudet, and Casadesus among other sets. Very good recorded sound.

What a perfect match! Ravel, a composer who can produce nothing serious but salon music, Abbado, a conductor who almost brought the once venerable Berliner Philharmoniker to a salon band, and the LSO, though still performing respectable works, a regular feature in salon music production.

As I listen to ravel's incredible breath-taking mezmerising genius of poetic beauty and dazzling skills at composition, I understand why ravel and Debussy did not care much for the geramn romantic tradition. Ravel could not stand anything from Beethoven. In my 30 yrs, the only thing i liked by Beethoven was his 4th sym(only Walter/Columbia), but even that work has faded to a lost memory.
Its amazing how few folk know the genius of Ravel, and even less appreciate the timeless beauty of his creations.
ravel is the flowering and culmination of the romantic period , which is why i feel no desire to hear Chopin.

Newly transferred from the original master tapes, Walter Gieseking's 1954 EMI Ravel cycle gains in color and amplitude over previous "unofficial" CD editions of these long-unavailable recordings. Indeed, his vocal grimaces at loud moments register more clearly. More to the point, Gieseking's pellucid touch and direct brain-to-finger equilibrium control Ravel's cruelly exposed, deceptively difficult textures with effortless elegance in Le Tombeau de Couperin, Jeux d'Eaux, the Sonatine, Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, and most of Miroirs (though Alborada del gracioso could use more sultry snap). True, Gaspard de la Nuit's outer movements lack the hazy sweep of Gieseking's famous pre-war 78s. But the short pieces embody lapidarian marvels, like the Pavane's perfect melody/accompaniment balances (only a pedaling genius like Gieseking can achieve this without pedal!) and the Haydn Menuet's elusive polyphony voiced to a tee. Even when he's in less than tip-top form, Gieseking still clicks into Ravel's sound world as if both composer and interpreter shared genetic code. --Jed Distler

As with Debussy, Gieseking' historical 1950s Ravel recordings are very fine. The works were also frequently orchestrated by Ravel and comparisons are very rewarding. A most cost effective way to know these works.

Another evidence of the grandeur of Gieseking!.......2006-09-10

The main virtue of this legendary resides in the fact that Ravel has never been played so incorporeal and so impressionistic. The use of pedal in Gieseking is extremely austere, he wants the bar sounds atmospherically, without mundane ornaments.

That is why his Ravel so ethereal and windy. A true rewarding experience for your senses.

Walter Gieseking has been considered for many years to be thesupreme interpreter of the Frenchimpressionists Debussy and Ravel.This recording does nothing to diminish this reputation. No pianist had the dynamic control and the supreme command of pedaling and half pedaling effects as didGieseking. While there may be sometechnical lapses here and there this is music making of the highestquality. Especially notable arehis performances of the Pavanne andthe Gaspard de la Nuit. I highlyrecommend this album.

Recordings of Ravel's piano music (all of it) are not rare, a testimony to the appeal this splendid music has held for pianists and listeners alike for over a century. Many of the finest pianists of the last century have bestowed upon us outstanding performances of these treasures; Casadesus, Entremont, and Gieseking, are among the artists whose interpretations have enriched our libraries. Therefore, you may reasonably ask, 'Do I need another Ravel recording?' or, if you are seeking an introduction to this music, 'Why Gwendolyn Mok?' To persuade you that her recordings are worthy of your attention, whether this music be old and beloved or new and seductive, is the reason I am writing this report.
So what has Mok wrought? If you first heard the keyboard music of Bach and Scarlatti played upon the piano, do you remember the revelation when you first heard Landowska on a Playel, or Valenti on a Challis? Well, that is what Mok has in store for us, Ravel's music on Ravel's piano, or one very close to it, to be precise and specific, an Erard of about the same vintage as Ravel himself, 1875.
There are a number of differences between a nineteenth century Erard, and the twentieth century grands that are ringing in our ears. I'll not labor over the mechanical developments that overtook piano construction in the twentieth century, suffice it to say, pianos grew bigger and louder and more brilliant so they could fill larger concert halls and do battle with larger orchestras. I find an interesting symmetry here that works to this recording's advantage. Mok takes us back more than a century in piano technology to an instrument with a narrower dynamic range and a more delicate, pliable tone, while recording technology has advanced in it's ability to capture subtler nuances with virtually no distortion. She brings us close to, and deeper into, the music, without any apparent loss of power when that is called for. That the instrument is comparatively diminished does not diminish the music, it renders it subtler. For example, the harpsichord like sounds of the Menuet Antique can hardly be coaxed from a modern grand. The clear and resonant bass is a wonder on this instrument and the pianist can muster her resources to produce thrilling crescendos and climaxes. This is not skimpy music!
The composer, the instrument builder, and the pianist, serve each other well here, and the listener harvests the riches.

A better title would be "The softer side of brass".......2001-03-15

There is much more "soft" (e.g. melancholic, romantic, whimsical) brass here than just romantic brass. I purchased this after an exhaustive search for CD with a rendition of Rodrigo's Concierto Con Aranjuez featuring a solo trumpet which was NOT surrounded a bunch of loud, Sousa-like brass pieces. The Rodrigo piece is good, but overall I prefer the rendition on the Brassed Off! soundtrack. The performances are adept and often inspired but the solo trumpet is often more technical than emotionaly fulfilling. In general this album is a bit schizophrenic. Several pieces (e.g. Albeniz' "Sevilla", Ravel's "Vasles nobles et sentimetnales"),are highly spirited and only "romantic" by the farthest stretch of the imagination but a few (e.g. Falla's " Miller's Dance") are restrained in their exubernace and the majority are quite soothing and worthwhile. I am particularly fond of Debussy's "Des Pas sur la Neige" and Granados "Oriental from Danzas Espanoles".

The best Ravel I've heard.......2003-02-26

I would like to hear the recordings described previously (from the fellows that canned this recording). But really, I'm here to buy the best interpretation of Ravel I've ever heard. Yes, it is wild and loud. But it is also very nuanced and can be as light as a feather. In the same piece, Mr. Entremont may go from a street festival sound to a nostalgic memory of a street festival. I don't know why but I think Mr. Ravel would have been pleased. I've heard these pieces played variously, all lacking the flavor of Entremont. I can't wait till it gets here.

I have owned this set since its LP release, and have worn it out. It is my favorite of all the complete Ravel piano sets I've heard (and I've listened to at least half a dozen). I was delighted to see that it had finally been re-released on CD, and appalled to see two very negative reviews lying in wait for the unsuspecting Ravel enthusiast. I heartily disagree with these two negative assessments. To me, Entremont captures both the details and the heart of this music, including in particular both "Gaspard" and "Tombeau." The layers are beautifully distinguished, yet effectively synthesized to produce a transporting musical experience. Entremont's "Pavane" is sublime. I unhesitatingly recommend it to all.

I've just finished listening to the second disc of this set. I held off for several days after listening to the first disc because I was so disappointed in the hammering, loud, blurry playing. I didn't want my heart to be broken by a similar performance of Gaspard de Nuit and Le Tombeau de Couperin, the Ravel masterworks I really treasure. Alas, the same pounding, brick-on-the-damper pedal style that is suitable for George Winston ruined these subtly nuanced movements as well. Entremont sacrifices precision for speed, and consequently fails to deliver either. I wish I had consulted this review before my purchase.

I recommend Robert Casadesus's recording of the complete Ravel piano works. One can wonder whether Mr. Ravel would have been pleased with the Entremont recordings if he likes, but no such speculation is necessary with Casadesus: he met Ravel as a young pianist and Ravel praised his performances.

No bargain at any price........1998-11-01

It is a sense of civic duty that compels me to warn my fellow music lovers away from this thoroughly unpleasant recording. Entremont's playing is almost uniformly dull, and he seems utterly incapable of engaging the subtleties of Ravel's music. On a few occasions, Entremont manages to assert some originality, but his efforts seem misguided and obtrusive. In theory, I could sell my copy to a used CD store and recuperate a few miserable dollars, but conscience prevents me from doing so. If you like French piano music, and you have a couple more bucks to spend, read my review of Koechlin's "Trois Oeuvres Maitresses", then buy it forthwith. You'll thank me later.
