Editorial Reviews
The Denver Post Magazine Weekend!
"...a dreamy 51-minute evocation of famous American mountains and coasts, from the Great Smokies to Rialto Beach, working in the folk song Shenandoah and lifelike special effects along the way." By Jeff Bradley, Denver Post Critic-at-Large
Ray Boren, Desert News
"Fresh Aire fans should recognize the name of Jackson Berkey, Mannheim Steamrollers innovative keyboard player. And they would hear familiar presentational styles in this album. Nevertheless, this is not Fresh Aire 8 but an ambitious, impressionistic tone poem....an aural travelogue...the music has been blended with spectacular nature photography in the award-winning American Visions videocassette series. On its own, The Mountains and the Sea is one of those musical creations that might appeal...

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Still singin' those mountain ballads after all these years.......2006-12-05
Country music fans today, just listen to the music and enjoy it for what it is, but did we ever really think about the starts of country music? Who started it? What kind of songs did they sing? Were they any good? Did their children follow in their footsteps and were they sucessful?
So many questions!! This CD is the answer. The first family of country music was the Carter Family, A.P., Sara, and Maybelle of Clinch Mountain, VA. But they were much more than mountain hilbillies who liked to party on friday nights. They wrote songs about lost love, the place they knew and loved, and most of all, just fun songs.
We start off with the legendary. "Keep on the Sunny Side," the Carter's theme song. This song is basically about how if we just look on the bright side of things, they aren't so bad after all. "Storms and clouds will in time pass away, and the sun again will shine, bright and clear."
Hey June Carter fans? Did you know where "Wildwood Flower" came from? It was from the good ol' Carter Family! Actually, it was one of their first hits, probably the most reknown carter family song in the world. About lost love, it's a song you'll want to sing 24/7!
"Worried Man Blues," is my very favorite Carter Family song. It has a catchy tune, and a good beat. The song is about a man who is sentenced to go to prison, but he has no idea what he's done. Filled with fun and laughter, this will become and family favorite.
"My Clinch Mountain Home," tells you alot about the Carter's backaround history. It reflects the carter's lives from "Ole Virginny."
"Foggy Mountain Top," is a great song. It features Sara's yodeling, and Maybelle's great guitar pickin'. This song, like "My Clinch Mountain Home", secretly shares backaround information about life as a Carter as well.
Ah, "Single Girl, Married Girl," the Carter's first hit, and undoubtfully their most sucessful. This is a solo for Sara, and also a solo for her autoharp.
In "My Old Cottage Home," A.P. does most of the singing, which is rare since he usually only did backup. Very similar to "My Clinch Mountain Home," but also very different. It's one of my favorites, so yuo will proabaly liek it too.
"The Valley of Shanandoah," is a very sad song. It tells a story about how a man fell in love with a beautiful girl in the past summer and promises to return to her next year so they can be married. Sadly, when the man returns, he finds that his true love had passed away into the great kingdom above. Teh song may be sad, but it capture your heart.
"Chewing Gum," is a really fun song to sing, and it really helps past the tiem away. A song that Sara wrote when she was a child, "Chewing Gum," features many funny lines that will make you laugh out loud as if you were watching Hee-Haw!
If you buy this CD, it's liek hearing the Carter's story through music. It's truly any country msuic fan's treasure. Be sure to read my other revies for June Carter Cash's "Press On", "Wildwood Flower", "Keep on teh Sunyn Side: Her life in Music, and "Live Recordings from the Lousiana Hayride."

Beautiful Nylon.......2002-10-12
Anyone who's ever listened to one of Steve Hackett's "rock" albums would not be surprised to hear this tremendous work. The "classical" side of Hackett's phenomenal talent is apparent in every album of his. This one may be the best to date in that genre. I was introduced to nylon classical guitar at a very yound age, but only fell in love with the instrument after hearing Hackett play. If you love it too, buy this CD. If you don't--even if you could never imagine listening to an album of acoustic guitar--buy this CD anyway and marvel at the performance. Or give it as a gift.
4 stars but there are still some questionables.......1999-06-01
I have long been a fan of Steve Hacketts work. In this album a collection of short descriptive works concerning Shakespeare's famous play, Steve Hackett's melodious music is some of the best in the classical guitar field. There are some gripes I have though, which warrant a 1 star deduction. Steve uses too much rolling of the chords which serves only to break up the melody. Secondly, I don't know the full story behind this one--it may even be listed somewhere on the CD jacket, but there are melodies, passages etc, even whole sections which I believe were written for orchestra, and recorded by someone else about a decade ago. ( I will not use the word "P" word as again I don't know the full story).
Steve Hackett demonstrates why he is the man.......1999-05-18
One of the most phenomenal classical albums I've ever heard. I never tire of it, particularly tracks 12+, which take on a profound, contemplative tone. I recommend this to anyone who appreciates excellence in songwriting.
This is beautiful music.......1999-04-22
This CD is a classical guitar concerto written by Steve Hackett. The guitar work on this CD is simply magnificent. Mr. Hackett makes the guitar sound like a pure work of art. I have never had this CD on for background music when it did not evoke a comment from the casual listener. For those of you who love Steve's rock work I would say listen to this CD to see the other side of him. He is truelly a guitar virtuoso. Words cannot do justice to the beauty of the music on this CD, it must be heard.

Composer Tim Janis has long straddled the line between contemporary instrumental and classical music. With An American Composer in Concert, he further blurs that line. The first nine tracks of this disc were recorded by the Tim Janis Ensemble in the composer's studio. They're short, majestic, and relaxing instrumentals named after nature themes ("Cape Elizabeth," "The Fallen Leaves of Autumn," "Pacific Wind"). Things pick up slightly during the 10 live tracks that make up the second half of this disc. Recorded at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with the American Symphony Orchestra, these tracks feature luxuriant strings, the occasional pennywhistle solo, and one vocal track (a take on "Amazing Grace" with sweeping orchestrations). As with most Janis efforts, there's nothing groundbreaking here, just soothing music and pleasant melodies. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
December Morning.......2004-10-17
It is just so soothing. I've had the opporturnity to see him in person (sort of) on QVC shopping channel. I can just see his face as he places along with the rest of the group. He looks so peaceful and serene. And that is how I feel listening to his music.
Splendid Live Performance from Modern Composer Tim Janis.......2003-04-24
Tim Janis's latest CD is split into two sections; the first 9 tracks feature new works, and the latter 10 tracks are taken from his live performance at the Lincoln Centre (USA) earlier in 2001.
The new tracks are a little repetitive in sound, but there is some quality music within them. Where the CD really takes off, however, is in the live section, which features renditions of his favourite pieces ably supported by the American Symphony Orchestra. Stand-out tracks include "Twin Lights", "Water's Edge" and my favourite of all, "Amazing Grace", featuring the powerful voice of Gwendolyn Leathers supported by some fabulous orchestration.
"White Mountain" deserves a mention of its own for its sheer excellence and beauty. Stunning penny-whistle playing!
These live tracks are taken from Janis's previous releases, including the excellent "Water's Edge" and the now unavailable "Flowers in October".
At over 70 minutes in length, you get a lot of music for your money.
If you enjoy melodic, soothing instrumental music played by a symphony orchestra, this CD may well be the one for you.
Highly recommended.
Very good but not excellent.......2002-11-22
When I first heard Tim Janis on our local PBS station, I was memerized by his music so I had to get the CD. I'm glad I did but I have to admit when a friend pointed out that all his songs pretty much sounded the same, I had to agree. Maybe as he gets older there will be some more variety, I hope so. He's a very talented young man.
An outstanding CD that leaves you wanting more.......2002-03-15
"An American Composer in Concert" is another outstanding CD from Tim Janis. The lush mixture of ensemble and orchestral songs truly transport you to a better place emotionally and mentally. Tim Janis composes the music I've been waiting my whole life to hear, though I didn't know it until I heard it. I'm much more at peace with nature and myself after listening to his music. On this CD, "Blue Hill Bay" is probably my favorite of all Tim Janis' songs, but all the songs on this CD (with the possible exception of a vocal rendition of "Amazing Grace" that doesn't seem to belong) are great. If you haven't heard Tim Janis' music, you owe it to yourself to get this one and listen to it. Since I've found his music grows on people, I guarantee if you listen to your CD 5 times, you'll be hooked like I am and explore his other CD's as well. Enjoy!!
Incredible music from an incredible evening..........2001-11-23
I LOVE the music of Tim Janis and this CD is a truly wonderful CD. This CD has georgeous live tracks and extra bonus tracks to make it completely full of breathtaking melodies...I would truly recommend it to anyone who wants to have some beautiful music around the house!

Seventy-five dollars!?!!?.......2005-12-16
This is a great album, and it's too bad it was allowed to go out-of-print, but asking $75 as one seller does is mind-blowing. Reminds me of the controversy in 1993 when it was almost pulled off the market through a lawsuit because no one "official" knew who this guy "David G. Porter" was and that as far as they knew he has no authorization to do any work whatsoever on Ives's music. EMI had the spine to keep it on the market but it looks like someone decided it wasn't selling well enough to reprint. My advice is to find a friend's copy and burn a boot of it, and scan the booklet for my program notes in your favorite language. Truly a great CD but that's too much to ask.

beautiful.......2006-11-13
Beautiful voice, beautiful songs. Recordings from an era we can be nostalgic about. Singers should listen to it: how to project a voice and how to pronunciate.
Peter Dawson--Songs of Sea and Empire.......2000-06-27
If you are a Peter Dawson devotee, as I am, this is an essential album to have. It includes many items I had never heard the great man sing, as well as some of his greatest song renditions. No Peter Dawson collection is complete without "We Saw the Sea", "On the Road to Mandelay", "The Fleet's not in Port Very Long", and "Saddle Your Blues to a Wild Mustang". Among the titles that were new to me that I liked were "The Unacccompanied Organist", and some of the Australian Bush Songs. Mr. Dawson is quite an acquired taste for an American. He was at his best singing songs of the British Empire glories. Once you have heard him at his best though, singing his definitive version of "Waltzing Matilda" or any of about 30 selections that could be described as his "greatest hits", I think if you have any feeling for they type of music he performed, you will be hooked. Mr. Dawson may be the finest singer that Americans have never heard of. Only one record, that of 'Matilda', backed by the "Mauri Poi Song", was ever released in the United States in his lifetime (1882-1961). Luckily, more of his material is coming to CD, and music listeners are the better for it. For years, I was restricted to an occasional Gilbert and Sullivan aria that happened to be in a collection, or the occasional '78 that happened to have made it across the ocean somehow. This CD was a good addition to my Dawson collection, and I recommend it.
