This welcome disc fills a substantial gap in the repertoire. Devoted exclusively to works by the Australian-born composer Arthur Benjamin (1893-1960), it is also both a pleasure and a puzzle. The puzzle is really to do with identity, and maybe Benjamin's cosmopolitan background has something to do with it. His career spanned three continents: in addition to his native country, there was also Europe – he came to Britain as a talented young pianist, studied composition under Stanford, and then stayed. His later years were spent in Canada and the USA, where he was a respected teacher, administrator, conductor and compsser. His name is still very much alive, of course, for just one piece: Benjamin may well have cursed the success of his two-piano Jamaican Rumba which led to him being classified as a composer of light music. The label still clings and perhaps explains why the Locrian Ensemble have put the five Negro Spirituals, in versions for cello and piano, first on the disc: pleasant enough, but they really tell you nothing interesting about Benjamin. That decision seems all the more surprising in the light of what follows: two substantial string sonatas – sonatina is a definite misnomer here – and a Cobbett-like fantasy for string quartet. They are substantial pieces, each of them, and there is much pleasure to be gained from these beautifully played and recorded performances. Benjamin really understands the instruments: so the viola piece is not just a violin work in disguise, but a throatier, sturdier, spikier piece. The eponymous violin work itself sings rhapsodically in flights of fancy high above the stave, and puzzled me when I tried playing the association game. No Stanford here; surely not that English flavour either. And then the penny dropped: Debussy and Ravel! Try saying Arthur Benjamin with a French accent. It works! We took our children to the Santa Cruz Symphony's production of Peter and the Wolf. Since the concert, they have been very interested in this classical music collection and listen to it regularly. We purchased this CD and the book "Peter and The Wolf" by Vagin Vladimir (fabulous illustrations). Together, they're a charming gift that any child will love and it could very well be their introduction to classical music for a lifetime.

The version of Eugene Ormandy conducting The Philadelphia Orchestra has most youthful and imaginary reading of Peter and Wolf. The color and the flare of the story is vividly drawn out. The orchestral sound are warm, delight and dynamic. Thanks RCA for reserving this musical artistry and rematster it.

This CD is one of my family's favorites. From the soothing voice of David Bowie (yes, THAT David Bowie!) unfolds the delightful story of Peter and his menagerie of animal friends and foes. The orchestration is simply beautiful, the reading expressive and vibrant, and the story a classic. I would highly recommend this CD - as it also includes two other pieces that will delight music lovers of all ages.

Of the 6 Pierrot's I've owned, this DeGaetani is the finest. The orch/conducting as well matches DeGaetani's superb artistry.

This is the recording that made me fall in love with 20th century classical music. Hundreds of CD's of modern music later, this one remains very close to my heart. Pierrot is scary, poignant, strident, and sometimes annoying--it's a masterpiece of exaggerated emotion. If God incarnated as a drag queen, this is what He'd sing.

The above words come from Igor Stravinsky describing his impressions of an early performance of _Pierrot Lunaire_, and given my own reaction to this masterpiece it is a fitting title. Composed in 1912, _Pierrot Lunaire_ (or, _Thrice-seven Songs from Albert Giraud's Pierrot Lunaire_) is a melodrama for voice and a small chamber group, consisting of piano, flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, violin, viola, and cello. Each of the 21 parts uses different combinations of instruments along with the vocalist. The vocalist gives frightening life to the text of Giraud's poetry, using an esoteric technique called "Sprechgesang," something between speech and singing. It is recognized as viciously difficult to perform, requiring unqualified control of tone as the vocalist must momentarily touch upon each note before moving to the next. The vocal performance here stands as one of the best I've heard by anyone anywhere. There are three sections, with seven rondels each, and in each Schoenberg deploys colorful combinations of instruments and tonal color, with music often angular and jagged, to underscore the various states of emotional drama. It's unbelievably intense, wild, outlandish, and haunting, especially once you read the translation of the poetry to understand the meaning of each individual part.

Book of the Hanging Gardens - quite good, bordering on excellent. But this disc is all about this performance of _Pierrot lunaire_. Essential in every way.

Jan DeGaetani has legendary technique, which is well suited to the interpretation of twentieth century music. Weisberg elicits top notch performances from the chamber ensemble. Interpretations are first rate. These recordings of Schoenberg are equaled by few and surpassed by none.

I love this recording of Pierrot so much that there was a time when I listened to it pretty much on repeat the way people usually do with rock albums. If you've heard another recording of Pierrot and didn't like it (like that horrible Boulez one), do yourself a favor and buy this, and see what it's really supposed to sound like. I've heard this singing surpassed only by a live performance, and that had flaws in other ways. Get this, now, listen to the whole thing while following in the translation, and then, I dare you, tell me this isn't one of the greatest pieces of music ever written.

Heifetz is the greatest violinist to make records. His jazz is excellent for a strictly trained classical violinist BUT Listen to any of Joe Venuti's recording of Summertime. It is magnifiently played by this violinist who had a classical technique but could deliver the jazz medium more idiomatically.
Classical violin players were oftened were amazed at Uncle Joe's ability to play off the beat and not what was exactly written. I confess- Joe Venuti was my great uncle but it is not just I who regard him as preeminent in jazz and he had a great technique and beautiful tone into his seventies.

Heifetz is my favorite classical violinist. Venuti is my favorite jazz violinist.

It Ain't Necessarily So, But It Is. These recording from the mid 1940's sound great. The performances are of course wonderful, it is the sound quaility that will catch your attention, if you remember when they were recorded. Most CDs of recording from this era either have major noise problems or sound compression. This 2 disc set does not suffer from either of these problems. The team from Deutsche Grammophon and Andrew Wedman at Emil Berliner Studios are to be applauded. These are mono recordings but DO NOT let that stop you from enjoying them.

I purchased this CD after hearing a couple of tracks on our local fine arts radio station, but was completely unprepared for the richness and beauty to be found therein. Galway is a past master of the flute.

The selections on this CD, both familiar and new to this reviewer, are lovely. And more than one is positively haunting. I tell myself each day that I will remove the disk from the changer, to save for another day. But I cannot. I must have my daily dose of Galway.

Such is the enchantment that he weaves.

This is one of a number of cd's bought for my wife (an avid flute lover) which have turned out to be among my favorites.

Galway plays with his normal crispness and energy, but here some unusual pieces one doesn't hear often. The two Khachaturian songs are haunting and the Belfast Hornpipe is so neat!

We listen to this often with toetapping, sometimes dancing enjoyment.

This was one of my favorite record albums when I was young. It was a pleasure to introduce to my grandchildren. MOST important is the narrative that starts each track. Many of the other versions do NOT include this. They were my most favorite memories, and the children still resond to them today.

The other reviewer is off base. If you don't want narration get a recording without it. With narration or not, Saint-Saens chose his animals and gave his musical interpretation of their appearance. Children can enjoy the verses although Hugh Downs does not have as much fun with them as some narrators. This is a great CD if you want to develop a child's interest in classical music.

This "unwashed" recording has the exhilarating tonality of a live performance which many modern digitals lack. Saint-Saen's "Carnival of the Animals" was my 4-year-old's favourite, followed by Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette".

Odgen Nash's verses, written to accompany Saint-Saen's work are too clever for young children, who will miss out on the word-play and puns. Also, they tend to interpret the experience too much, which interferes with their imaginations. If a child prefers to make-belief in dragons, for example, as opposed to lions, then there is all of Hugh Down's recitations to sit through and ignore first, since the tracks do not separate the narrative from the music.

Nonetheless, this is one of the better classical recordings I've heard geared specifically for children.

      I first heard this disk on my car radio while driving on a California freeway. I was so "jazzed" that I pulled off at the next exit to write down the details for ordering it, something I've never done before or since. This is artful, sensuous music played with stunning virtuosity. Don't miss it!

      Here the Venetian composers of some great oboe concertos with the addition of Benjamin's rearrangement of Cimarosa's keyboard sonatas for Barvirolli's oboe shine.

      Oboeist Anderson is consistent in exquisite performance. Wright's able conducting of the Philharmonia Orchestra provides a glorious backdrop to the solo pieces.

      Especially fond of Cimarosa/Benjamin's Concerto and Albioni's Concerto in B flat.

      Besides these, there are wonderful concertos by Vivaldi and Marcello.

      This is marvelous addition to growing oboe collection.

      I never cease to be amazed by this player. And this CD is no exception. John Anderson undertakes some of the most breathtaking and exciting performances of what are now mainstays of the Oboe repetoire, breathing total new life into concertos that have, in some cases been played many times before on CD. Including a solo which was used for the film 'The Firm.' He is well supported by Simon Wright, and the String section of the Philharmonia Orchestra, with their ever glorious tone. This CD is a must for anyone who has a love for a particular composer on the disc, or the oboe itself. To put it simply, this CD is a masterpiece.

      Isaac Stern one of the top 5 greatest violinist of all time. Here Stern plays short pieces from two of his Lp's, None but the Lonely heart{1963} and Romance{1972}. These two lp's put on CD is a must for any fan of the Violin.

      Stern's playing here is top of the line..playing directly from the heart. No other violinist played with so much color and shading as Isaac, and only a few had their own personal sound like Stern did...most other famous violinist play great but they all sound pretty much the same.

      The personal sound of a violinist really comes across when he plays encore pieces like Stern is playing on this CD....So if you want to hear The Beautiful Sound of Stern, grab this CD. Also you get beautiful arrangents for violin and orchestra by Arthur Harris. You can never go wrong with a Stern recording.

      I was first introduced to Isaac Stern about 30 years ago when my husband purchased the Humoresque album for a stereo. This album is no longer in existence and looked everywhere for this CD and didn't find until recently. It is just as beautiful as I remember it. We also purchased a second CD to give to our son so that our two grandsons, ages 1 and 3 will have an appreciation of classical music.

      This is a very good CD that covers a broad range of music. The Mozart Concerto for clarinet is especially good, as Emma is able to really make it sing. Other highlights on this disc are the Finzi Bagatelles and the "Victorian Country Gardens". Both are exceptional pieces of music. I had never heard Emma play before, but now I am hooked, and I can't wait to get another recording. I definetly reccomend this for the classical Clarinet lover.
