For many, Caruso is still the Tenor of the Century. Pearl's comprehensive Caruso Edition lets us hear why. Twelve discs in four boxes cover the whole of his recorded output. Volume One is devoted to his earliest recordings--the 1902-1908 period. From those first 1902 sessions recorded in a hotel room with piano accompaniment, Caruso displayed "star" quality--through his unstinted outpouring of golden tone, and his joy in communicating the splendors of both the music and the voice. By the third disc, we're in the presence of the world's most famous tenor, joined on some tracks by equally renowned colleagues. Ward Marston's excellent transfers come closer to capturing the sound of Caruso's recorded voice than competing versions, albeit with noise from the old 78s that may be troublesome for some. --Dan Davis

Caruso's performances are purely breathtaking. This set does not attempt to over-process the sound as some do. All the 78 RPM noise gets through and so does all the music. This is the way these recordings should be heard. Was Caruso's voice really that fantastic or is it just that the recording process of the day was perfectly suitable to his voice? It doesn't matter - what you will hear on each and every track is Caruso giving everything he's got. There will never be another like him, and there's no better way to get his material on CD than this series. The only thing you could do beter is get the original 78's.

The only word that comes to mind to describe this collection is "amazing". The re-mastering of these historic recordings strikes just the right balance between noise reduction and voice preservation.

To think that the earliest of these recordings was made in a hotel lobby in 1902! It's truly incredible.

I'm a music performance major in college. I need to collect a wide variety of performers on different pieces I add to my repetoire. Caruso is by far one of the greatest tenors of all time. Pavorotti is known for his high C's, well Caruso is known for the grace in which he can sing them. As a music lover I love to listen just for the feeling and emotion he puts into his music. As a student, he adds so many different embelishments on phrases that can change a boring phrase into a title line. I consider this a bare essential purchase.
