Where did this guy come from? I have been a great fan of Apr piano series(Moiseiwitch/Fiorentino/Petri/etc) but had never bothered with this disc because I had never heard of De Groot. Finally i decided to go with it because I am currently collecting different versions of Gaspard.
Let me begin by saying, the reason you and I most likely have not heard of him is because his lp's were not transfered to disc till the mid to late nineties, and his records were beyond a rarity outside of the dutch territories were they were recorded. The first time i had heard of him, however, was the ravel concerto(included here) with mengelberg on a discount label. hearing that alone, the orchestra being unprepared for the extremely modern and inventive dynamics required to pull off such a concerto made this recording less than appealing(which consequently shaded over the brrilliant piano playing-which i am guilty of ignoring also)
This disc begins with, in my opinion, the most individually beautiful Miroirs i have ever heard. I can only compare it to Gieseking with a phenomonal sense for ravel rhythm. I listened to the Noctuelles several times before making it to the second track, which was almost as appealing.
So the Miroirs is first rate, if not better.
The Gaspard is a slightly differnt story. It was recorded at the same time as Miroirs(in 1951) and begins very well, though le gibet was lacking that haunting fealing needed to truly pull it off. Scarbo, on the other hand, begins with finger slips, and it seems like he almost looses control thirty seconds it. It gradually gains momentum and at around 4:30 in takes flight. Overall, it is a good performance, but far from the best, though for individual details I would say an essentail for pianophiles. The La Valse is also interesting and the notes do not mention which pianist is playing which and I find it fun to and challenge those pianophiles to test their abilities. The concerto, despite some oprchestral deficientcies has spunk, and is played with that remarkable sense of rhythm evident is Miroirs. Highly recomennded
