Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my most-played CDs.......2005-10-13

This is one of my most frequently played CDs. I find it perfect background music for meditation, prayer, reading and other tasks, as well as a good CD that doesn't disturb people at work.

This is not intended to be organised as a church service or a concert performance per se, but rather, as the co-producer Carol Rosenberger states, 'this album is meant to recreate an experience many of us have treasured: slipping inside the doors of a cathedral and finding oneself alone in a vast, quiet space with light streaming through stained glass windows. The organist begins to play gentle music, and one is lost in contemplation...'

As a churchy person, I've often had the experience of working or sitting in an empty church while the organists or their students practiced. This recording in many ways reminds me of that experience. Of course, our organ is a far cry from the pipe organ in Atlanta's Cathedral of St. Philip, with over 5000 pipes (and our church does not have a 5-second delay reverberation, either), 4 manuals and 96 ranks. This Aeolian-Skinner organ is a genuinely stunning instrument, but as with any instrument, it takes the right performer to bring out the fullness of the sound from it.

Todd Wilson is just such a performer. His playing is solid and well-suited for this task, with occasional flashes of brilliance. Mozart's 'Adagio', Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Many's Desiring', and Barber's 'Adadio for Strings' (here arranged for the organ) are truly wonderful pieces. The programme here is a diverse collection of pieces from Baroque, Renaissance, and later pieces, including folk tunes and a few modern compositions. Todd Wilson is a church organist and music director at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland, Ohio (a city with not insignificant music resources and life), and is also head of the Organ Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has had an international performance and recording career.

I applaud the decision to make this a double-disc set - the producer writes that there was just too much good music to limit the selection. Thus, there is a method to the organisation, given the availability of two discs. The first disc has more simple pieces, easily recognisable melodies and well-known hymn/sacred pieces. The second disc has a bit more complexity of music.

There is a booklet that is particularly designed for young people, so that they may become more familiar with the organ as an instrument, and this type of music.

This is a truly wonderful recording.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sets of organ works.......2005-02-20

This is a superb set of organ works. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic!.......2003-12-28

The Æolian-Skinner organ in St.Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta is the finest example on Earth of eclectic organ...and the last- really-marvellous instrument erected by this firm. Flutes and Erzählers speak directly from Heaven...and the organ, despite electric, seems to have tracker action! Listen to Bach's BWV 731 and 648: they sound like played on a Silbermann instrument!
Todd Wilson is a delicate musician, a poet of the organ and a genius in the choice of the stops.
Buy also the other recordings of this Æolian-Skinner by Robert Delcamp (Naxos) and Alan Morrison (Gothic)...and don't forget that Michael Murray recorded in St.Philip's Cathedral for Telarc the finest rendition of Poulenc's "Concerto in sol minore per organo, archi e timpani" under the direction of the late Robert Shaw.

5 out of 5 stars By All Means Get This CD.......2003-09-06

I found this wonderfully relaxing CD above and beyond my expectations. Do you enjoy organ music, then listen and explore the sacred music of J.S. Bach. This music will relax you: keep your muscles relaxed as you work on a time deadline for a large project, or doing some casual items around the house.

5 out of 5 stars To be fair..........2003-04-04

The hiss that one reviewer refers to is undoubtedly the organ's wind supply. The wind can be heard on most organ recordings.

4 out of 5 stars The need for more exciting organ literature.......2001-06-14

There is no doubt in my mind that D. Higgs is a very capable organist, however I was expecting a bit more from this CD. This mammoth instrument never fails to satisfy because of its size and versatility. However, one fails to perceive the enormous space in which the instrument is situated. The mixture of substantial organ works with those of the more "fluffy" variety did not seem to work. The gradual crescendo to the end of the Bolcom fantasia highlights the vast resources of this instrument all to be crowned by a blare of trumpets with full organ tutti.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious sound in a glorious space.......2005-10-04

As I have had a long personal relationship with both Washington National Cathedral and John Fenstermaker, the conductor of this disc, it would be difficult for me to find anything critical to say about it. The sound brings back memories, but that's another story. The balance of forces - an immense organ, a very large choir (two combined, actually), and a brass band - is superb for a recording in a space notoriously difficult to get a balanced sound in. I was particularly interested in the addition of the brass band to things like Finzi's "God is gone up," which (as far as I know) was not originally scored to include it. It's a big, glorious sound in a big, glorious space, but also has some more contemplative moments (e.g. Palestrina's "Sicut cervus" and Tallis's "If ye love me" ) and the unusual treat of about 45 seconds of carillon music (I'd have liked more!) at the beginning. Consider this CD an ESSENTIAL addition to the library of any fan of Anglican church music at its best.

      5 out of 5 stars A truly essential recording.......1999-07-21

This is possibly the best album ever recorded by a men and boys choir. Every fan of choral work owes it to themselves to search out and buy a copy of this CD. Every single composition included is unforgettable and moving. Try to find a copy however you can -- you won't regret it. Recorded as a celebration of the completion of Washington National Cathedral in 1991, this CD is an impressive achievement in and of itself. Famous choral works are balanced perfectly with lesser-known, Nathional Cathedral-affiliated composers, all adding up to an enlightening and highly enjoyable listening experience. Be sure to listen to the powerful majesty of the Cathedral's Great Organ, displayed on this recording in all its ground-shaking grandeur.

      Product Description

a tribute and memorial to Catharine Crozier, whose concertizing career began in 1941 and spanned an era of nearly sixty years. She was professor of organ at the Eastman School of Music from the late 1930s to the mid-1950s, when she and her husband Harold Gleason moved to Rollins College in Florida. At mid-century, the organs of G. Donald Harrison were defining the concept of the American Classic organ, and the performances heard on this compact disc illuminate that design philosophy and its influences on organ composition and performance styles of the day. In furtherance of its design goals, Aeolian-Skinner released during the 1950s and 1960s a set of recordings of its more notable instruments, and the program given here is taken from two such releases made on the Auditorium Organ in Independence, Missouri.

This is the most glorious recording of this womans artistry that exists. It contains all of the hallmarks of Harold Gleason's approach to playing the organ, and is recorded on an instrument that he designed.
The playing is flawless and musical on the highest level. A must have for the serious collector.

I was very disappointed when I received this CD. The recording was of very low quality -- it sounds as though someone is holding a pillow over the speaker. Don't waste your time with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, wonderful, beautiful!.......2000-03-14

A must have, I was blown out of the water by this fabulous recording by the choir of Grace Cathedral. The sound of the boys is stunning, and the treble soloists have outstanding voices. If you enjoy choral music, this cd is a must.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been a great recording.......2005-02-12

I considered the only review available, and purchased, but found audibility real problem (on my Bose system). Sometimes it cannot be heard, then I have to hurry and turn it down before I blast my eardrums out. I have become familiar enough with the CD to just avoid a few of the tracks, though I wish that were not the case.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best choral works ever.......1999-09-11

I've listened to many choral cds over the years, but this one, by far, is the best that I have ever had the pleasure of listening. It simulates an evensong complete with the lessons. The balance is great, the sound quality is exceptional. All choral music lovers should immediately purchase this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Weird But Wonderful Organ Music! .......2006-01-31

This CD offers a generous (73+ minutes) sampling of "exotic" works for organ played by David Britton on the 1987 Rosales organ (3 manuals, 87 ranks) in the Trinity Episcopal Church of Portland, Oregon. Though the works are not in the mainstream of organ music, nearly all were written by very reputable composers, offering some degree of quality assurance. Thus we find the pieces not insanely quirky, though unusual in one way or another. The organ used is a fine, then brand-new, instrument and it is played very well by Mr. Britton, who has the musical background and talent needed to bring these esoteric works to life.

The first piece, "Battle on the Fifth Tone," is by the little-known 17th century Portuguese composer, Diogo de Conceiao. In an area torn by frequent wars battle pieces were not uncommon then, though such programmatic descriptions are less often encountered today. (Don't forget Tchaikovsky's Overture of 1812 with its cannonfire, though.) The music is very listenable, with fine full organ sounds and pungent reeds playing occasional bugle calls. The numerous florid scale passages remind us of Gabrieli's organ "intonations." Overall a very nice piece of Iberian period music.

Next is early capriccio by J.S. Bach with the odd title "On the Departure to Distant Climes of his Dearly Beloved Brother" BWV 992, wherein he tried to convince his older brother not to venture off to Poland to play oboe in a band. The programmatic piece consists of 6 parts in varying moods to portray feelings associated with the departure, and young Bach's manuscript contains errors and/or awkwardnesses which surprise us today, steeped as we are in our conception of Bach the consummate Baroque master. (Mr. Britton, in his arrangement, corrects only the most obvious errors in order to let the vulnerabilities of the young genius come through.)

Michel Corette's 18th century "Grand Chorus with Thunder" is a nature piece, of course. To contrive the thunder he prescribes a plank to be placed across the bottom octave of the pedals, and the effect of this low-pitched tone cluster is striking. The music, other than the thunder, is fine and characteristic. (Compare the storm scene in Grofe's 20th century "Grand Canyon Suite" for orchestra.)

Gherardeschi's "Sonata for Organ in the Guise of a Military Band Which Plays a March" sounds like a fairly typical 18th century march until we hear the nightingale's call (imitated by the organ's Rossignol stop: two pipes in water). (Compare Resphighi's "Pines of Rome" featuring a recording of the nightingale's song.) It is a rather charming antique by an unfamiliar composer, about whom the liner notes tell us nothing.

Lefebure-Wely's name will be recognized by organ-lovers, though his reputation as a serious composer may be slight. Still, the "Bolero de Concert" is a very pleasing bit of dance music, in which reeds sound characteristic Spanish motifs that yield to a lovely flute-like interlude before returning. His "Elevation" is a sober and dignified piece fully in keeping with its liturgical function.

Louis Vierne is a well-known and highly respected writer for the organ, who presided over that instrument at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris during the early 20th century. His 24 fantasy pieces include "On the Rhine" and "Gargoyles and Chimeras." The former is a suitably majestic and impressive evocation of the historic river, recalling Wagner's "Rheingold" but, even more, Smetana's "Moldau." It's a fine piece, well-played. The latter is an appropriately spooky portrayal of the fierce and fantastic creatures peering down from the cathedral roof to scare away evil spirits: great Halloween music!

Saint-Saens needs no introduction. His "Prelude and Fugue in C Major," opus 109, reflect the enormous talent and versatility of this accomplished pianist, organist, and composer of 19th century Paris. I don't know why this work was included, for it seems not at all strange or exotic, just very fine French music.

The 20th century American, Leo Sowerby, likewise is familiar to organ music lovers. His "Carillon" is a lovely, coloristic tonepiece, which after a dreamy introduction presents a simple, repetitive bell-like pattern to evoke the carillon for which it is named. Toward the end actual handbells join in to echo the bell theme. It is overall a sweet, gentle, and nostalgic piece.

In contrast, Marcel Dupre's "Carillon," opus 27, no. 4, is a much more active, vigorous, and robust presentation of the bells. The piece grips you with its energy and excitement and carries you along relentlessly toward its grand and thrilling climax. Along the way some stretches of machine-like repetition seem to give a foretaste of today's minimalism.

I recommend this CD highly to those who have a particular interest in organ music or in unusual, exotic, or especially fantastic, imaginative pieces presented in a colorful and exciting way. Since it can be had at a surprisingly low price, you'll surely get your money's worth!
