A Little-Known Masterpiece.......2004-04-27
I've studied music since kindergarten but did not discover the Victorian "English Renaissance" composers for many years, apparently I was force-fed the "standard classics." A few years ago I ran across this CD and bought it knowing only that Parry also composed the well-known hymn "Jerusalem." It became an instant favorite. This symphony is absolutely marvelous--grand and luxurious, yet without the crash-bang histrionics of, say, Berlioz or Verdi. The 4th movement is particularly wonderful, with a melody worthy of Rachmaninoff and a marvelously heroic build to a conclusion like a sun bursting through clouds. Thanks to this piece I will now buy, sight unseen, any recording by Parry I can find, and anything by his colleague Charles Villiers Stanford as well. Can't imagine why they are so little known today. Both were true masters. If you like the symphonies of Rachmaninoff, Mendelssohn or Brahms, you'll love this work by Parry.
