Elegant Playing, Gorgeous Music.......2003-05-15
The major work here is the huge Tchaikovsky sonata. I have never been particularly fond of the piece before this recording. It tends to sprawl and to become somewhat insistent. But not in Kuerti's hands. The form becomes more apparent than in, say, Richter's titanic account. Kuerti takes a more nuanced approach. He takes a particularly reticent approach to the second movement, and appropriately so; this is music about secret thoughts. The weakest movement is the third; it bustles and hurries, but the rhythmic structure is confusing so that it refuses to dance. The finale cries out to be orchestrated, but Kuerti's tonal palette alleviates that need to a great degree.
The charming 'Grand Concert Waltz' by Glazunov is redolent of salons and balls and ladies in elegant gowns. Kuerti sets the waltz a-swirling, and one thinks of the stylish playing of Golden Age pianists like Lhevinne or Friedmann. The collection of several pieces by Liadov show that he was not just a one-piece composer; I particularly liked the baroquey Gigue.
And finally we have some Scriabin - his Fourth Sonata and two groups of préludes. All played with suitable impressionistic dreaminess uncontaminated by the neurotic tics and grimaces so many pianists inflict on this music.
A wonderful disc that I recommend highly.
