the only reason this album isn't perfect, is that their following album, six demon bag, is.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-08-14

THIS BAND IS AMAZING. I just saw Tom Waits this evening and I saw Man Man two weeks ago in Cleveland and its hard to tell which one is better. This band is like Tom Waits was a novelty song writer or something. Like, Tom Waits + Circus. AMAZING.

5 out of 5 stars What words can't describe.......2006-06-17

The first time I ever even heard of Man Man is when they played at a bar around my town. I was immediately hooked, their sound was so unique. Imagine if Tom Waits and Mr. Bungle got together and had a bastard child with Modest Mouse, (no matter how impossible that may seem) that would be Man Man. From the voice altering devices, to the eerie childrens choir this album is amazing. Their second album "Six Demon Bag" only continues the greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Wearing My Gorilla Suit.......2005-12-29

I played this album for a friend yesterday and told her, "this is your new favorite band". She didn't believe me, and on the first listen, was a bit frightened by Man Man's haunted children's choir, traffic whistle, elephant noise, shouting, barely understandable lyrically (and sometimes incoherent) qualities of music. However, by the end of the album, I had sold her that a second listen was absolutely necessary to continue on with life. And a third. And a 95th. She asked me at some point, "What does one call this genre?" and I responed, "Ugly. But GOOD ugly."

Imagine the ugliest Tom Waits song you've ever heard, the ugliest Modest Mouse song you've ever heard, nails been dragged over a chalkboard, and circus animals all playing over one another, and you will have encountered one of the most absolutely wonderful and necessary album I purchased in 2005.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD.......2005-04-06

I get sudden urges to listen to this band. It's awesome. I've heard nothing like it.

5 out of 5 stars Doing penance for awful musical neglect.......2007-05-28

About time. The symphony has been recorded at least once before, and it is not a work to be despised. No purchaser of this CD will suffer any sense of 'let-down'. It is a glorious disc.

This is an A-plus grade recording for classical music. The best of the year so far, in my opinion. And it is proving to be a very good year for forgotten, neglected works of the High Romantic era of the mid to late 1800s.

I can do little more than support Joshua's comments. They have been matched by equally enthusiastic reviews drafted in Britain. In short, the Reinecke G Minor violin concerto on this disc is one of the forgotten monuments of classical music. Challenging and intense, yet dignified and with an effortless flow of melody and moving cross-referencing between themes. It is a tough work for the solo violinist, and believe me this listener's heart nearly stopped when Ingolf Turban seemed to hover on the brink of disaster. But of course, he triumphed, despite the risk of agreeing to a live performance.

No matter - congratulations all around. A terrible musical injustice has been corrected. The Reinecke violin concerto (along with his wonderful concertos for the piano, harp and flute) has finally been brought out into the light. It belongs in the concert halls and always has, along with violin concertos by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Dvorak, Saint-Saens, Goldmark etc, etc...

5 out of 5 stars Reinecke Finally Knocked my Socks Off.......2007-05-19

I have a strange relationship with the music of Carl Reinecke (1824-1910). Born in what was then Denmark (now Germany), Reinecke was an "academic", literally: Professor of Composition and Piano at the Conservatorium in Leipzig from 1860, and conductor of the orchestra there until 1895. His 85 years were strewn with a surprisingly prolific compositional output, considering his many duties during most of them. Today, probably the only work of his that could be considered close to widely known is his Sonata for Flute and Piano in E Major, Op.167 (known as the "Undine"). And that indeed was my first introduction to his music; I must confess, flute plus piano must be among my least favourite musical forms, so my opinion on that work is surely unfair, but I didn't care for it all that much. This became a pattern for me... I'd hear something of his and think "that's okay", or "I like that a little". There were a couple of fair exceptions, like the 2nd and 3rd symphony, a more notable exception in the Harp Concerto, and a rather hefty exception in the 3rd Piano Concerto, which I considered his greatest work by far. Why did I keep buying his stuff? I don't know, but I did, and this CD landed in my lap.

How is this story relevent to a CD review? Because I know my experience with Reinecke is far from unique. And I hope that also, my experience with this disc, specifically the Violin Concerto, will not be unique. If my paragraph above resonates with you as regards to Reinecke, I hope that this one will as well: get this. This Violin Concerto is something you may love. It's magnificent. Brilliant, even. It has everything: all three movements have great melodic work, difficult passages for the violin while avoiding shallow flashiness, and excellent orchestration. It's a fairly neo-Classical work with a mild Romantic texture to it, similar in many ways to the music of Joachim Raff. As far as I'm concerned, it satisfies on every level, in each of the three movements. A masterpiece! And excellently rended in a live (don't panic, you'd never guess!!) performance, featuring the fine late-Romantic specialist Turban on the violin. I first ran into him performing Raff Violin Sonatas, and once again, he succeeds excellently, and this a very difficult work from what I can hear.

As for the Symphony, it has been recorded elsewhere, though this is now my favourite performance of it. I really like this work, though it may not find as wide an appreciative audience as the Concerto. And the Romances are both beautiful, well-written, and (I find) very pleasing. All in all, this is a big winner, and cpo makes a powerful case for Reinecke's Violin Concerto. As usual, their sound quality is high grade, and the orchestra is more than merely fine.

5 out of 5 stars A soothing escape to a tropical paradise.......2005-03-12

The title says it all. It is an experience of music from another culture which in my mind is associated with a tropical paradise which I imagine existed prior to Dutch colonialism of now present day Indonesia. The gamelan orchestra consists of various sizes of suspended metallophones (percussion instruments with tuned metal bars), small bulbed gongs, large suspended gongs, and drums. With the soft gentle percussive nature of the music, the experience that I get from it is an expression of the slower tranquilizing rhythms of nature. This album is well worth the $9.98 for anyone looking to explore other realms of music.

It's a testament to Hollywood's desire--nay, need--to complicate things that Cole Porter's 1934 show Anything Goes made it to the screen twice (20 years apart), both times with Bing Crosby as the male lead. For this 1956 version, the plot was rewritten, three Sammy Cahn/Johnny van Heusen tunes were added, and "It's De-Lovely" was brought in from another Porter show (1936's Red, Hot and Blue!). As a bonus, this CD adds three non-Porter songs written for Crosby in the 1936 film version. Confused yet? In any case, this soundtrack may leave Porter fans frustrated but will delight those who enjoy the finger-snapping arrangements customarily found in 1950s Hollywood musicals. The inventivity of the brass section on the title track, for instance, actually eclipses Mitzi Gaynor's perky vocals. As for "I Get a Kick Out of You," between Jeanmaire's French-accented reading and the insane brass section going into overdrive, it's a camp delight. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Anything Goes (1956) Film Sound-track available again!.......2005-04-23

This album was originally issued in the UK on the Brunswick Label, back in 1956. It was deleted in the early 1960s. It is marvellous to be able to obtain it again some 40 years later!

The quality is very good and it is an excellent bonus to have three tracks from the 1936 movie, included - especially the excellent Sailor Beware. The quality here is also remarkably good.

It should be noted that not all of the tracks are recorded directly from the soundtrack of the 1956 movie. In particular You're the Top appears to be a studio recording with Bing and Mitzi Gaynor. I seem to recall in the movie the song was sung concurrently by Bing/Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O'Connor/Jeanmaire in two different rehersal locations whilst on board ship. None the less the performance and quality is excellent - A most enjoyable CD especially for Crosby/O'Connor/Gaynor fans and good value at the price.

Wouldn't it be marvellous if this movie could be released on DVD, together with "The Birds and The Bees" - another of Mitzy Gaynor's rarely seen Paramount Technicolor comedy musicals? By the way the same sets are used in both films. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor and Zizi Jeanmaire sing superbly.......2004-02-10

This reissue of the 1956 ANYTHING GOES soundtrack from Decca Broadway is a real find. Although quite inferior to basically every other cast album of AG, it still features some great vocal performances from Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor and the stunning Zizi Jeanmaire.

Highlights include Mitzi Gaynor's peppy, energetic rendition of the Title Song; Zizi Jeanmaire's all-out performance of "I Get a Kick Out of You" and Bing Crosby's beguiling croon of "All Through the Night".

Though the curious quartet version of "Blow Gabriel Blow" is strange indeed (the number works better as a solo), and the just plain-embarrassing "Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke" and "A Second-Hand Turban and a Crystal Ball" are two more missteps.

Added as bonus tracks are 3 numbers from the 1936 film version of ANYTHING GOES with Bing Crosby (though these particular numbers were not written by Cole Porter, thank God).

Worth buying if only for the wonderful Zizi Jeanmaire. [DECCA BROADWAY B0001933-02]

1 out of 5 stars For Bing Crosby fans only........2004-01-28

Decca's album of songs from the 1956 Paramount film ANYTHING GOES has always been a hashed up affair, and the decision to release it on CD is curious, to say the least.

The film was not well recieved when it was released and for many years it was a staple of afternoon TV movie shows.

Using the title and five songs from Cole Porter's Broadway hit, plus Porter's "It's DeLovely," Three new songs were needed, and instead of asking Porter, Paramount used Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn who contributed "Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke" "You can Bounce Right Back";and "A Second Hand Turban and a Crystal Ball." Never heard of these songs? With good reason...they are all terrible!

This is not even a true "soundtrack" album. Several songs were re-recorded in the studio. So instead of hearing "You're the Top" as performed in the film by all 4 stars, we get a cute studio arrangement for Bing Crosby and Mitzi Gaynor.

There are so many fine recordings of the stage production of ANYTHING GOES that this album is of little use unless you happen to be a Bing Crosby fan.
