Customer Reviews:
GREAT CHRISTMAS MUSIC.......2007-01-10
A VERY WELL-DONE ORCHESTRAL CD OF CHRISTMAS CLASSICS,AND HARD TO FIND IN MY LOCAL STORES. SO HAPPY TO PURCHASE IT.
Fresh stuff --- for Christmas, anyway........2005-12-23
Christmas music is, for the most part, terribly cliché--- quadruply so if you're a musician of any flavor. So I suspect that many Boston Symphony/Pops musicians are weary of playing the tunes on this album. But I'm pretty confident in saying that this album is the least cliché holiday album you're likely to come across for a while.
Yes, yes, they dig up some old standards, "Sleigh Ride" included. And while we don't really need another recording of it, at least it's a NEW recording, with (to my amateur ears) some detectable Lockhartness in it. The other "traditional" tracks include solo vocal settings of "O Holy Night" and "Do You Hear What I Hear", plus others.
The fresher stuff is what makes the album worth the price. The Joy to the World arrangement by Randol Alan Bass is fantastic -- which is remarkable, since most Joy to the World arrangements are the very definition of Christmas cliché. "Songs from the Hill Folk: Carols of Appalachia" is yet another Christmas medley, but it's a GOOD one, and its set of tunes is good a mix of sounds as well as of familiarity. "Kije Takes a Ride" is a jazz version of a Prokofiev tune that only orchestral buffs are likely to know, from a film that only hard-core film buffs are likely to have heard of. (But it's still unmistakeably Christmas.) "Winter Weather Medley" is a clever mix of three popsier tunes; it's got some weak spots, but it's a keeper nonetheless. "Joy!" is the Sebesky jazzish medley that was the "centerpiece" of "Holiday at Pops!" a few years back. It's nice, and most people eat it up. (I personally think it needs work, but I'm picky with stuff that tries to be jazz.) And the last track is "Happy Holidays", a straightforward arrangement of the Manhattan Transfer chart. Nothin' fancy, but a very listenable specimen of orchestral jazz (which is usually awful).
As far as recording quality goes, I /think/ you can tell that they're under their own label now, and aren't having their sessions mixed by guys from Sony anymore. But almost all the places this is detectable, it's not egregious at all -- in fact, it almost makes me think it's a superior recording model. (Almost.)
Overall, you're likely to have your own set of skippable tracks and repeat-'em-over-and-over tracks. But I think, for anyone curious enough to read these reviews in the first place, you won't go wrong for your money with "Sleigh Ride".
A Great Pops Companion CD.......2005-12-19
When it comes to Christmas and the Boston Pops, it's easy to wonder if this ensemble really needs another Christmas recording. We have multiple discs with the great Fiedler renditions of holiday music, and there are two fine discs under the direction of Conductor Laureate John Williams. Keith Lockhart has also released a holiday music disc. Why another? Well, when it comes to the Pops, creativity and reinvention are two of their trademarks, so this ensemble can always be counted on for something unique and enjoyable, and this newest Christmas CD SLEIGH RIDE will become a beloved part opf the Pops Christmas music library.
This disc has the new sound of the Pops under Lockhart's direction. There are new arrangements that are fresh and lively, and bound to become future "classic" Pops favorites. There is a mix of the traditional (the arrangement of "Joy to the World" "O Holy Night" and the famous chorus from Handel's MESSIAH "Hallelujah." The original "Kije Takes a Sleigh Ride" based on the "Troika" Prokofiev's LT. KIJE. There are three medleys: one of winter weather songs, a second of general holiday songs, and a third called JOY which is an addictive arrangement of Christmas carols. Any time I listen to this disc I find myself listening to this track again and again.
I'm giving these recording five stars due to the quality of the musical performances. It is a flawless set, but for me it would be a supplementary Boston Pops Christmas disc. The first I'd select would be any of the discs under the direction of Arthur Fielder that include Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival," Leopold Mozart's "Sleigh Ride" and Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" without vocals, and the classic Pops renditions of "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers," "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," "Santa Claus is Coming To Town," "Winter Wonderland" and "The Toy Trumpet." I'd also purchase William's JOY TO THE WORLD which includes some of his tracks from HOME ALONE and Lockhart's HOLIDAY POPS. These recordings give a true Pops Christmas. SLEIGH RIDE would be a companion CD, but like all Pops CD's, it's a great investment.

This expanded reissue of Willis and Robison's 2003 EP does precisely what the best Christmas albums have always done: reinterpret, revive, and refresh the tradition, while remaining intensely musical. The rotating cast of players--including young Austin pals Andrew Nafziger, Eamon McLoughlin, and Warren Hood, as well as keyboard ringers Chip Dolan and Floyd Domino--serve every song with the right balance of grit and glow. The arrangements, even when stringed up on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," never cross the line into schmaltz and never overwhelm. The slowly swinging, jazzy opener, "Santa Baby," can't equal Eartha Kitt's definitive version, but Willis's restrained-but-sexy delivery comes close. While the band can't rock the twang quite like the Buckaroos, they still get a swampy romp out of Buck Owens's classic "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy" and an elegant electric piano-driven waltz from "Blue Christmas," which Willis delicately transforms into a country-soul aria. Robison's lead singing has never been powerful enough to score on the charts; here, he's just playful and amateurish enough to undercut the cornpone of "Please Daddy Don't Get Drunk" and scratchy and sincere enough to redeem the bathos of Charlie Louvin's "Shut In at Christmas." The closing Robison original, a live version of "Oklahoma Christmas," may never become a standard, but its honest and hilarious satire of homestead piety is classic--as is the whole album. --Roy Kasten
Album Description
Happy Holidays is classic Christmas with a cool country twist. From standards like "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "Santa Baby" to not so traditional tracks like "Please Daddy Don't Get Drunk," Happy Holidays is a musical Christmas card from Kelly and Bruce to their fans. They celebrate their favorite family season with "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy," "Oklahoma Christmas" and the classic "Blue Christmas."
Stirring up visions of sugarplums and sightings of Santa on the roof, Happy Holidays from Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison is so festive it might just make it snow in Texas.

Who wouldn't love this?.......2007-01-09
Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison are amazing, as usual. Add this to your Christmas collection. You won't be sorry!
Best Holiday Album In Years!!.......2006-12-17
I usually purchase 3 or 4 holiday albums each year. So far, I have barely listened to the other two new albums. Why? Simply put, this recording is excellent! The song selection is delightful ranging from up-tempo country to a "jazzy" version of "Have youself a merry little Christmas". In my opinion, this "jazzy" version is one of the best arrangements of the holiday classic. Also included is "Blue Christmas", of which Elvis' version sets the standard. Kelly Willis' version has to come in a close second to that of the King.
From a technical standpoint, this recording is fairly clean with limited background hiss or noise. Those songs recorded live maintain the live concert feel and are quite cleanly recorded as well. My only criticism is the total recorded time is only slightly over 38 minutes. Total play time aside, this recording belongs on everyone's CD changer!

2006 yuletide platter from the '70s Punk/'80s Pop superstar. It's a nice day for a 'White Christmas' here on this delightful collection of 17 Christmas favorites including 'Jingle Bell Rock', 'Let It Snow', 'Merry Christmas Baby', 'Oh Christmas Tree', 'Silver Bells', 'Here Comes Santa Claus' and many others. Idol does not dress up the songs to fit his over-the-top Rebel Rocker image, but instead remains true to the original, joyful nature of the season. Grab a cup of eggnog or mug of hot cocoa, relax in front of the fireplace with a loved one and let Billy Idol help usher in the holidays in style. Bodog.

Kudos to maturity and entertainment.

He's no Bing Crosby, but it's pretty good!.......2006-12-21
I bought this album as a joke, and out of curiosity. Well, I have to say, I rather like it! It gets off to a rocky start with Frosty the Snowman, which just seems weird. But, then, I think Frosty the Snowman is a pretty lame song to begin with. Then, I think he was a little too hammy on Here Comes Santa Claus. But, the other tunes on the album are quite good. He basically sings them straight, with enthusiasm. He sounds like a guy with a good voice who enjoys singing and wanted to record some Christmas tunes. In other words, there's really nothing to dislike about it, and quite a lot to like. My two-year-old son is very keen on Here Comes Santa Claus, and cries for me to play it again when the song ends.
If you like to listen to Christmas music while making cookies or wrapping presents, this will do very nicely. The fact that it's Billy Idol singing it makes it funny, rather than just schmaltzy.
A pleasant surprise!.......2006-12-21
After listening to some of the songs and watching a couple of the videos on Billy's MySpace page I knew I had to have this album.
Once again he has proven ne is a versatile entertainer and not a has-been. This novel album is a must have for any Billy fan or Christmas music lover. When I play it so many of my friends are shocked that it's Billy Idol!
I really like it.......2006-12-20
Being a 30-something year old Billy Idol fan - I knew I HAD to have this. I wasn't really sure how his take on classic Christmas music would be. Was he gonna rock it out in Idol-style??? The answer - NOT in the least. And yet I still think it's a great CD and totally worth the money. There are a couple of gems on this that outshine the others.
-God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is my absolute FAVE on the entire CD.
-Auld Lang S.yne, also VERY good. Reminds me of a pub full of drunken Englishmen
The other classics like Blue Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, etc are kinda typical - loungy sounding. They aren't bad, just not my favorites. I think you should at least check it out.
Happy Holidays!
good ol' billy.......2006-12-18
This is a really good album. Sure its weird but thats what gives the album its charm. I love Billy's versions of the christmas songs and I hope he does a volume 2

Christmas Is...A Percy Faith Classic!.......2005-12-27
It's been about 40 years since this Christmas album by Percy Faith was released. To this day it's a pleasure to listen to with its rich instrumental selections and voices. The title tune says it all! You will enjoy this for many Christmases to come!
Good Songs But They Should Have Digitally Remastered Them! The Sound Is Just A Little Off!.......2005-12-21
I too had the cassette tape of this Percy Faith Christmas album and updated to this CD and I love all of the songs and my favorite is We Need a Little Christmas. I do have one complaint and that is that the sound doesn't seem to have been remastered and seems kind of low. It's as though they didn't digitally remaster the original mono recordings.

The Happiest of Holidays.......2005-12-15
"Happy Holidays Love Barney" is a happy collection of songs. It is light-hearted and fun. The list includes such standards as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" along with other songs such as "Suzy Snowflake" and "Hey, Santa Claus" which are seldom heard. Many of the songs are sixty to ninety seconds long and hold your attention. I like Barney's side comments such as when they are singing about Rudolph not joining in any games, Barney says "oh, my!" and also when they are finished with "The Twelve Days of Christmas" Barney goes "Pheww!". "The Twelve Days of Christmas" carries the listener along. The voices of Barney, Baby Bop and BJ, along with a children's choir, keep the song fresh. Hanukkah and Kwanza are both represented with "My Dreidel" and "Habari Gani" respectively. Overall, this has been one of the highlights of the Christmas season!

Holiday music for everyone.......2006-12-15
I, too, grew up with Jo Stafford's Ski Trails. I listened to cassette tapes for years of the scratchy old album and was amazed and delighted when her holiday CD including all the Ski Trails songs and more came out. My husband and daughter came to love the old songs just as much and that music is now part of our holiday traiditon.
Finally SKI TRAILS!!!!!.......2005-11-12
Like many of the fine folks who reviewed this album, I grew up listening to, and absolutely cherishing the Ski Trails album. Jo's voice is absolute heaven and the Starlighters and Paul Weston's Orchestra (Jo's husband) are simply wonderful! I can't imagine Christmas without them! Through the years I have had several copies of the original Columbia LP release of Ski Trails, in fact I still have them all . . . each time I encounter it, I can't resist. Wonderful Music. Well Worth The Price.......2005-10-13
This is an excellent CD full of holiday music and also the magnificent voice of Jo Stafford. These are rare recordings and I consider this a great find. The song "Winter Weather" alone is worth the price of the CD.
Top-flight Christmas Vocals.......2004-12-16
I grew up with "Ski Trails" as part of the background of every Christmas. As I grew older, I listened more closely and realized what a great singer Jo Stafford was. Paul Weston was a pretty darn good arranger, too. I was crushed when I found out my sister had thrown out the old scratched-up copy of "Ski Trails" from my parents' house! Finding this CD saved my Christmases...
Highly recommended for those who like that smooth '50's sound.
Run, don't walk!.......2004-12-11
This is possibly one the finest albums, Christmas or otherwise, you'll find. Jo Stafford's vocals are sublime. Paul Weston's arrangements are equally so. I play it all year long. To hell with the neighbors!

I have always loved this Album, when I was in College in 1983 someone stole it fom me while I was letting it play in the dorms common room. I tried for years o find a copy,m even trying o contact SOLAR Records (dont exist anymore, EBAY, record clubs, and you. I grew up in LA, Calif and this brings back good memories just listening to the samples.
Happy Holidays for Sure.......2001-12-15
Although I just recently purchased this CD, I am very familiar with The Whispers album entitled "Happy Holidays to You." I purchased the album back in 1979, loaned the album to someone who loaned it to someone, and the rest is history.
I am so excited to have the opportunity to again listen to one of my favorite Christmas albums. My favorite single on the album is the title song "Happy Holidays to You," followed closely by The Whispers rendention of "This Christmas" originally recorded by Donny Hathaway.
I promise you, if you purchase this CD, it will too become one of your favorite Christmas albums.
Enjoy.
Can't have one without the other.......2000-04-13

Product Description
Bodog.

What the hell is this?!.......2007-02-25
Billy, Billy, Billy... What's happening to him? It's like went from being the yelling rebel I grew up listening to, to Bing Crosby. I didn't wanna give this legend a bad review, but it's for the sake of sanity. I give this album 1 star for his great voice, but it's still not worth buying...
Ouch........2006-12-21
The whole album lacks feeling and energy. He could have attacked some of these songs and made them fun. Unfortunately the whole album sounds ad if it was recorded in a garage with a hammond organ and a sedated vocalist.
For a moment I thought Billy was making a joke, but by the end of the album, I was simply shaking my head. It's not bad, just no life.
Weird, Weird, Weird.......2006-12-17
Billy Idol fans beware!
This is not the usual Billy Idol material here.
It is Billy Idol singing,
but "White Wedding" this isn't.
As a Billy fan myself I thought it was right on for
Billy to make a Christmas album with Classic Christmas tunes.
However, it's not what you'd expect from a rocker like Idol.
There are some light-hearted fun-filled tunes on here,
and I don't regret buying this Holiday offering.
I understand that Billy did this mostly for his family
(his kids) and I respect that.
I can also understand how some fans might feel a little
disappointed in Billy's Elvis Presley/Frank Sinatra approach to
these classic Christmas songs.
Some of these songs could've been
rocked out a bit more. (after all we are
talking Billy Idol here)
Some of them should've never been
let out of their stall.
It is what it is I guess.
This guy can sing........2006-12-13
I know, I know.... I'ts Billy Idol. The guy with the hair and the sneer and the in your face punk attitude. I saw him live "back in the day" and he sang a ballad. Don't remember what it was but he can really sing when he wants to. He has an excellent voice. He just never dispayed it with all of the punk/pop stuff he's famous for.
Well get ready. He does show his voice off on this cd. He is really good and I promise, if you can get past the fact that it's Billy Idol, you're gonna love it. If you like well produced, traditional Christmas music from a guy with a really good voice, give this cd a try.
