Want to know the experience of an African American in America in the thirties and forties, the man who "discovered" Ghandi, went to India, and brought back his message, the man who then taught his students at Boston University School of Theology this message.

One of his students was Martin Luther King.

This short book should be bought, read, and shared.

Wisdom for the non-believer.......2000-04-07

Its is purported that Martin Luther King carried this book with him at all times, and upon reading these pages one can see immdiately that this book isn't just a tome of Christianity, but rather a blueprint for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. But in a larger sense this book is a guide for transcending the heartache and humiliation of modern life and renewing one's vision of a spirited public and personal life.

A great look at a follower of Christ.......1999-08-24

This book is a classic which deserves to be named that. It is one great look at the heart of a decent and kind man, who personally, I believe, saw the heart and mind of God, and wrote accordingly. In this book, we will not find the harsh and intolerant God of the conservative establishment, but the real and kind God of the New Testament. Here we find a Jesus who wants to talk to us, hug us and be our best friend. Yet, this Jesus also wants to defend the poor and at-risk. This is a radical look at a radical man and, to me, savior, Jesus Christ.

Howard Thurman, book regarding Jesus and the Disinherited, gave a spirtual informative opinion about the downtrodden condition of any race of people regardless of color. The true existence of Christ should be viewed only as a subject matter instead of an object.

This was an inspiring book........1999-06-17

This book has helped me to better understand the life and ministry of Jesus Christ!!! I would recommend this book to any one that is serious about their relationship with Jesus.

Howard Thurman gives in five tightly packed chapters a guide to a more God filled life using five disciplines; Commitment, Wisdom, Suffering, Prayer, and Reconciliation. He offers illustrations and concrete suggestions on how to achieve a more spiritual filled life. Even though the language, in terms of gender, is outdated, this is a must read book!

Moments of High Resolve.......2005-02-23

In the moments of my despair at being burned out of our home in Malibu, this book, For The Inward Journey, soothed my weeping mind and heart. I quoted this most incredible book many times when I was Editor of Science of Mind magazine and as a spiritual counselor at Agape Center of Truth in Culver City. I have many favorites that have motivated me but the eloquence of Dr. Thurman's, 'The Moments of High Resolve' touch me deeply and I am uplifted. The first sentence alone is brilliant: "Despite the dullness and barrenness of the days that pass, if I search with due diligence, I can always find a deposit left by some former radiance." This particular essay is 3 short paragraphs that will light up your day in a few moments. I believe this book is a must read for everyone on the spiritual path. I'm certain you will be delighted. I am speechless with this man and his work. He is a great philospher & great spirtual teacher. He has touched my soul in all my trials in life. "Meditations of the Heart" will assist you in your trials and assist you in your spirtual growth. I have read many times along with "Deep is the Hunger". You will be touched.

I have read this book probably about 5 times. However, every time I read a poem or meditation, I got some type of new revelation from this man's words. Howard Thurman is by far one of the most wise ,intellectual,spiritual and thought provoking men I have ever studied. This book touches every issue that probably every person will inevitably face. From life, love, race, death, pain and joy, this book is a must read for the poet and the seeker of the very heart of God alike.

In becoming better acquainted, through reading, with a man some of my friends have encouraged me to become familiar with, I have found an incredible gift in the form of Hward Thurman, whose message is not only inspiring, but timely, interfaith, intercultural and, most of all one, thatif taken to heart and put into practice, could change the world. I often wonder why such messages are read, spoken from various platforms and then passed over and and remembered only as inspirational words as we forge ahead in the world doing things the same way over and over again.

I recommend the message in this book to everyone who will care enough to not only learn about an incredible human being who was with us for a while, left us with a vision, and challenged us to see things in a new light. I invite us to see the wisdom he shared and put it into action.

It is an autobiography and so we must accept it as written, staying free f rom judgement as to style, etc. It is a man's heart, gifted to those who will read and those whom he has influenced and those who could gain so much from sharing in the vision.

I recently returned to Thurman's autobiography after 15 years. I am developing a course in Composition/African-American Literature. Thurman's words will be the springboard. His prose is elegant and concise; his sensitivity to nature, a poetic model; his expansive spirit, inspirational. Many chapters will serve as exercises for writing; e.g.: his instruction for the preparation of sermons. In fine, his response to life is a guidline for good writing and holy living.

Thurman stands on his own as a giant. The only weakness of the book is that often the compilers feel the need to tell us what Thurman is going to say.

Not sure so much from Disciplines of the Spirit needed to be reprinted.

I read much of the book during a 12 hour Prayer Vigil and found it very enriching and satisfying.

Though he comes from a Christian background and is steeped in Christian theology, his understanding is that of the mystic; seeing the heart of truth in all the world's belief systems. Dr. Thurman is not widely known, but should be on the reading list of anyone who seeks insight into how to move the heart into the world. I will never be without Dr. Thurman's guidance in my life again

This is volume three of Deep is the Hunger. These meditations were written originally for the weekly Bulletin of Marsh Chapel, Boston University, as a part of its ministry. Each one has been used by many people within the University and the larger community beyond its walls. In the course of a year, a host of people from our own country and beyond the seas attend the Sunday morning religious services in Marsh Chapel. Each Sunday morning the congregation consists of persons from the Orient, Africa, the Near East, Europe, South America, Canada, and the United States. This fact has influenced the character of the meditations. For the most part, they are addressed to the deepest needs and aspirations of the human spirit. Their purpose is to make articulate the authentic lines along which the individual's spiritual quest has led him through the years.
