The crowning achievement of Jimmy Carter's presidency was the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, and he has continued his public and private diplomacy ever since, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his decades of work for peace, human rights, and international development. He has been a tireless author since then as well, writing bestselling books on his childhood, his faith, and American history and politics, but in Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, he has returned to the Middle East and to the question of Israel's peace with its neighbors--in particular, how Israeli sovereignty and security can coexist permanently and peacefully with Palestinian nationhood.

It's a rare honor to ask questions of a former president, and we are grateful that President Carter was able to take the time in between his work with his wife, Rosalynn, for the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity and his many writing projects to speak with us about his hopes for the region and his thoughts on the book.

A big thank you to President Carter for granting our request for an interview. <HR class=bucketDivider noShade SIZE=1> <B class=h1>An Interview with President Jimmy Carter</B> <BR><BR><IMG hspace=4 src="http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/books/a-plus/Carter_Jimmy_200.jpg" align=left vspace=4 border=0> <B>Q:</B> What has been the importance of your own faith in your continued interest in peace in the Middle East?<BR><B>A:</B> As a Christian, I worship the Prince of Peace. One of my preeminent commitments has been to bring peace to the people who live in the Holy Land. I made my best efforts as president and still have this as a high priority. <BR><BR><B>Q:</B> A common theme in your years of Middle East diplomacy has been that leaders on both sides have often been more open to discussion and change in private than in public. Do you think that's still the case? <BR><B>A:</B> Yes. This is why private and intense negotiations can be successful. More accurately, however, my premise has been that the general public (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim) are more eager for peace than their political leaders. For instance, a recent poll done by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem showed that 58% of Israelis and 81% of the Palestinians favor a comprehensive settlement similar to the Roadmap for Peace or the Saudi proposal adopted by all 23 Arab nations and recently promoted by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Could you explain your choice? Were you surprised by the reaction? <BR><B>A:</B> The book is about Palestine, the occupied territories, and not about Israel. Forced segregation in the West Bank and terrible oppression of the Palestinians create a situation accurately described by the word. I made it plain in the text that this abuse is not based on racism, but on the desire of a minority of Israelis to confiscate and colonize Palestinian land. This violates the basic humanitarian premises on which the nation of Israel was founded. My surprise is that most critics of the book have ignored the facts about Palestinian persecution and its proposals for future peace and resorted to personal attacks on the author. No one could visit the occupied territories and deny that the book is accurate. <BR><BR><B>Q:</B> You write in the book that "the peace process does not have a life of its own; it is not self-sustaining." What would you recommend that the next American president do to revive it? <BR><B>A:</B> I would not want to wait two more years. It is encouraging that President George W. Bush has announced that peace in the Holy Land will be a high priority for his administration during the next two years. On her January trip to the region, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has called for early U.S.-Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. She has recommended the 2002 offer of the Arab nations as a foundation for peace: full recognition of Israel based on a return to its internationally recognized borders. This offer is compatible with official U.S. Government policy, previous agreements approved by Israeli governments in 1978 and 1993, and with the International Quartet's "roadmap for peace." My book proposes that, through negotiated land swaps, this "green line" border be modified to permit a substantial number of Israelis settlers to remain in Palestine. With strong U.S. pressure, backed by the U.N., Russia, and the European Community, Israelis and Palestinians would have to come to the negotiating table. <BR><BR>1/18/2007 </DIV> <HR class=bucketDivider noShade SIZE=1 ="/"> <P clear=all><B class=h1>More to Explore</B> <TABLE cellPadding=4 width="100%"> <TBODY> <TR align=middle> <TD width="33%">

Nonetheless, thirty years after his first trip to the Mideast, former President Jimmy Carter still has hope for a peaceful, comprehensive solution to the region's troubles, delivering this informed and readable chronicle as an offering to the cause. An engineer of the 1978 Camp David Accords and 2002 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Carter would seem to be a perfect emissary in the Middle East, an impartial and uniting diplomatic force in a fractured land. Not entirely so. Throughout his work, Carter assigns ultimate blame to Israel, arguing that the country's leadership has routinely undermined the peace process through its obstinate, aggressive and illegal occupation of territories seized in 1967. He's decidedly less critical of Arab leaders, accepting their concern for the Palestinian cause at face value, and including their anti-Israel rhetoric as a matter of course, without much in the way of counter-argument. Carter's book provides a fine overview for those unfamiliar with the history of the conflict and lays out an internationally accepted blueprint for peace.<BR>Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Book Description

Following his #1 New York Times bestseller, Our Endangered Values, the former president, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, offers an assessment of what must be done to bring permanent peace to Israel with dignity and justice to Palestine.

President Carter, who was able to negotiate peace between Israel and Egypt, has remained deeply involved in Middle East affairs since leaving the White House. He has stayed in touch with the major players from all sides in the conflict and has made numerous trips to the Holy Land, most recently as an observer in the Palestinian elections of 2005 and 2006.

In this book President Carter shares his intimate knowledge of the history of the Middle East and his personal experiences with the principal actors, and he addresses sensitive political issues many American officials avoid. Pulling no punches, Carter prescribes steps that must be taken for the two states to share the Holy Land without a system of apartheid or the constant fear of terrorism.

The general parameters of a long-term, two-state agreement are well known, the president writes. There will be no substantive and permanent peace for any peoples in this troubled region as long as Israel is violating key U.N. resolutions, official American policy, and the international "road map" for peace by occupying Arab lands and oppressing the Palestinians. Except for mutually agreeable negotiated modifications, Israel's official pre-1967 borders must be honored. As were all previous administrations since the founding of Israel, U.S. government leaders must be in the forefront of achieving this long-delayed goal of a just agreement that both sides can honor.

Palestine Peace Not Apartheid is a challenging, provocative, and courageous book.

5 out of 5 stars He's walked the walk.......2007-06-22

Carter is one of the leading humanitarians of our time. He is the one person who won lasting peace between Egypt and Israel and won a nobel prize for it. If there is anyone more qualified to talk about peace and justice, it is president Carter. All the naysayers who've never even stepped foot in Israel or the Palestinian territories are blowing hot air, president Carter need not worry, his record speaks for itself! This is a great book if you'd like to learn and understand the realities on the ground, and real steps to bring peace to the region.

1 out of 5 stars Anti-Semitism Has Reached An Ultimate High.......2007-06-20

This book clearly shows how Jimmy Carter is an anti-Semite, a racist, and a bigot. The problem in Israel is the Palestinians, not the Israelis.

5 out of 5 stars Truth will prevail, there is always hope for peace!!!.......2007-06-09

Contrary to everyone opinion, there is always hope for peace. That is exactly what Jimmy Carter did. The book is an excellent account of the facts, dates and history of the Israel and Palestine conflict.

During the six-day war started on June 5, 1967, Israel fought everyone of its neighbors, Egppt, Syria, Jordan or even Saudi Arabia. How did Israel win the war? Americans gave them all the military weapons, technology and money. Americans always stayed on the Israel side: congress, senators, MDs, Judges, professors, corporate CEOs, Hollywood, .... Jews made of 4% of the US population, but 36% of the corporate CEOs, hugh number of billionaires, mayors.... It is very important for the best and smartest Jews in US to wake up to the fact and reality. The fact that Israel the problem for the conflict, is clearly demonstrated in this book.

Open request to all American Jews: you give donations for a tax deduction for your billions. Therefore why not give money to Palestine for a change? Afterall, they have been neglected for 40 years. Life is so tragic and the only way out for the Palestines, is to become a suicide bomber on the Israel bus. The movie "Paradise Now" said it all.

American Jews, is this what you want? Another 911? This is not a competition for numbers: 3900 deaths in Palestine vs 1100 deaths in Israel. Does this mean that Israel wins?

Don't forget, the more land Israel military takes, the more suicide bombers will act. It is a vicious cycle. Peace is the only solution.

Step One: Start a summer camp to get Israel and Palestine kids/teenagers to attend.

Step Two: Donate $$$ by setting up a hedge fund, or private equity in Palestine. Since nobody else does this, you will be making $$$.

Step Three: Develop role models in Palestines for the young generation.
WIth the $$$, Harvard professors can be hired.

Step Four: Negotiate Peace with all neighbors, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia.

Step Five: Israel must honor its commitment for Camp David Accord, UN Resultion 242, 338, 1397. Israel must withdraw militray from the illegally occupied lands.

Step six to 1000???? How long will this take? Not on our life time.

The person who can accomplish will go down in history forever. It is better than being another billionaire. What do you think?

5 out of 5 stars Palestinian retards continue to shoot themselves in the foot!.......2007-06-05

...The book begs the question - "What can I do to stop it and what can I do to help these poor Palestinians - Christians and Muslims?"

But current events in the region today beg the question - "How can you possibly help someone who really doesn't want it?"

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Carter is like good wine..........2007-06-04

Jimmy Carter is like good wine, he gets better with age. In "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid" he has the merit to show another side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that is not shown by the popular media.

The result of the US ignorance of the Middle-East can be seen in the failure of the occupation of Iraq today. There will be no peace in the Middle East until the facts detailed by Carter in this book are recognized by the US.

Even at his most irate, Jimmy Carter projects cool, communicating with a poise that commands attention while gently signaling to opponents that they better do their homework before mounting any sort of debate. Perhaps that's why the former president, Nobel Peace Prize-winner, and bestselling author ranks as one of the planet's most respected voices in the areas of human rights, diplomacy, and good government. And when a clearly agitated Carter suggests America is on a slippery slope, globally speaking, as he does throughout Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis, it's wise to pay heed even if the book's overriding Christian perspective may trip cautionary bells in secular readers.

More a set of loosely connected essays than a single, precise argument, Our Endangered Values outlines Carter's worldview while pondering what he posits are key problems looming in the 21st century. Thematic touchstones such as the war, environmental negligence, civil liberties, the rich-poor divide, and the separation of church and state form the book's backbone, with Carter filtering each through the prism of his own vast experience. He doesn't much like what he sees. Though much of the data Carter presents to support his arguments is familiar, it's worth repeating that "the rate of firearm homicides in the United States is nineteen times higher than that of 35 other high-income countries combined." That "In addition to imprisonment, the United States of America stands almost alone in the world in our fascination with the death penalty, and our few remaining companions are regimes with a lack of respect for basic human rights." That when it comes to sharing the wealth with poor nations "Americans are the stingiest of all industrialized nations. We allow about one-thirtieth as much as is commonly believed [or] sixteen cents out of each $100 of the gross national income." America: land of the free, home of the brave? Try global bully with a bad attitude and reckless sense of entitlement.

Carter spends significant time contextualizing his own spirituality, as if to underscore the urgency of his message that fundamentalism in any form is bad, especially when it encroaches on government. Indeed, Carter persuasively links fundamentalism to harmful policy, the subjugation of women, general xenophobia, and a host of other ills occurring all around him. And while George W. Bush in particular and the current administration in general take fewer clips on the chin than might be expected, Carter's arguments for common-sense change are deeply resonant nonetheless. --Kim Hughes

Book Description

President Jimmy Carter offers a passionate defense of separation of church and state. He warns that fundamentalists are deliberately blurring the lines between politics and religion.

As a believing Christian, Carter takes on issues that are under fierce debate -- women's rights, terrorism, homosexuality, civil liberties, abortion, the death penalty, science and religion, environmental degradation, nuclear arsenals, preemptive war, and America's global image.

Download Description

"President Carter has written importantly about his spiritual life and faith. In Living Faith, a huge bestseller, he recounted the values and experiences that shaped his personal and political life. In his companion book Sources of Strength, also a bestseller, he meditated on fifty-two of the favorite Bible lessons he has taught. In Our Endangered Values, Carter offers a personal consideration of ""moral values"" as they relate to the important issues of the day. He puts forward a passionate defense of separation of church and state, and a strong warning of where the country is heading as the lines between politics and rigid religious fundamentalism are blurred. Now, he describes his own involvement and reactions to some disturbing societal trends that have taken place during the last few years. These changes involve both the religious and the political worlds as they have increasingly become intertwined, and include some of the most crucial and controversial issues of the day -- frequently encapsulated under ""moral values."" Many of these matters are under fierce debate. They include preemptive war, women's rights, terrorism, civil liberties, homosexuality, abortion, the death penalty, science and religion, environmental degradation, nuclear arsenals, America's global image, fundamentalism, and the melding of religion and politics. Sustained by his lifelong faith, Jimmy Carter assesses these issues in a forceful and unequivocal but balanced and courageous way. Our Endangered Values is a book that his millions of readers have eagerly awaited. "

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly, it Significantly Diminished my Cynical Outlook.......2007-05-04

From my station--as an unintentionally cynical, confused, and post soul-searching Gen X person--I picked up this book in some fleeting moments of hope and inquiry. Also, I suppose nostalgia for my 70's childhood (that coincided, for a time, with this last earnest president), caused me to buy Carter's book.

Reading Mr. Carter's concise but rich expressions of his views of this country today--all of which are informed by his relationship with a Jesus of Nazareth who preaches love, compassion, mercy, charity, nonviolence, and nonjudgementalism--has touched and changed me.

That Mr. Carter was a U.S. president gives him a certain credibility I find myself wishing I could observe in authors of other books of this type. And that his "motives" for writing what he does seem only to derive from a genuine pursuit of and interest in Truth allowed me to actually trust him somewhat.

Though I appreciate and consider the views of writers from Michael Moore to Noam Chomsky, Carter's unusual blend of political experience, intelligence, and moderate but serious religiosity produce insight I find compelling in a way I hadn't experienced.

1 out of 5 stars Noise From the Liberal Peanut Gallery.......2007-04-18

Carter was a politically-correct loser. No one wants to hear his religious moralizing, fundamentalist or no. We didn't want him then, we sure don't want him now. The best thing that happened to Jimmy Carter was Ronald Reagan. Carter needs to be quiet and go back to raising peanuts, a job he can handle.

1 out of 5 stars Our Endangered Values.......2007-04-07

I wanted a large print book. I didn't get that, so I'm very disappointed, of course.

4 out of 5 stars Comes softly but hits with like a brick.......2007-04-03

Carter did a pretty good job starting the book... priming you into -much- of the problems we as a society face today and then explaining in further and readable detail further on.

The chapters target one or two issues at a time, he explains his background when making his decisions, coupled with his experiences and some supporting facts.

Not so political or even overtly religious as I had initially considered. This isn't a point-the-finger at Republicans (something that would only further divide people), it targets fundamentalism and the bipartisan lackings (including some of his own).

Toward to the end I was getting pretty upset with the figures he poses just because of the divisiveness, ignorance and beligerence of our society cuts to the bone, especially considering I'm currently on my second deployment in Iraq and I cannot seem to do anything about this mess, and can only hope other Americans read this or similar eye-openers and actually voice-up about these matters.

1 out of 5 stars America is not a country.......2007-04-03

Mr. Carter should know that "America" is the name of a continent and not the name of a country. He should have titled his book "Our Endangered Values: United States'moral crisis".
We, the "other americans" (the citizens of the American continent)don't have the moral crisis of the United States (we don't invade foreign countries, for instance).
Having said that, I want to tell that I admired Mr. Carter for his great contributions to world peace.

Book Description

<big><center>

A unique and personal audio legacy from one of the most important voices of our time

</center></big>

Jimmy Carter's beloved bestsellers Living Faith, Sources of Strength and Our Endangered Values have established him as one of our nation's most trusted authorities on issues of faith and society. Today, the weekly Bible class he teaches at his home church in Plains, Georgia is attended by visitors from around the world, representing a wide range of faiths

and denominations.

Sunday Mornings in Plains gives you the opportunity to share in this remarkable experience wherever you are. Each volume of this extraordinary audio series draws on an extensive archive of recordings to present a month-long sequence of President Carter's Bible classes. Listening to these live recordings, you'll hear the unscripted interaction and unexpected insights that make his classes so popular, as well as the anecdotes from President Carter's life and observations about world events that he infuses into his lessons.

Jimmy Carter has been teaching Sunday school ever since he was a young midshipman in Annapolis; in later years he conducted religious services on submarines on which he served, and even led the occasional class in Washington while he was president. For the last 25 years, President Carter has taught the adult Bible study at his church in Plains, where several hundred visitors join him each Sunday to understand the wisdom of the Bible and apply it to their lives.

Leading a Worthy Life presents the four classes President Carter taught in January 1998 on the Book of Ephesians. Describing basic tenets of Christian living that still resonate today, Paul urges us "to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." (Ephesians 4: 1-3)

As he speaks to the theme of reconciliation-with God and with each other-that runs through all four lessons, President Carter connects Paul's message to the concerns of our time, including such relevant issues as fundamentalism and disunity in the church, and shares insights into the practical application of faith in daily life that will challenge and inspire all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Good lessons even for the non-religious.......2007-05-13

First I have to admit to being a Democrat and a fan of Jimmy Carter's public life after the Presidency, using his name recognition to fund public health initiatives in third world countries. However, I can't claim to be of a particulary religious bent. These lessons are very informal, recorded in Jimmy Carter's home church in 1998 and the sound quality isn't great--when someone in the audience speaks it's very hard to hear. But in the informality and simplicity lies its charm. Jimmy opens each lesson by telling what he and Rosalind have done in the preceding week, asking what other dominations or states/countries are represented in the guests who have come to listen to his lesson, and then asks for a prayer from someone in the audience before he begins. The lessons are from letters that Paul wrote and JImmy presents the message, often by asking questions of those present, in an unadorned, sincere way. This is not a smooth, professional delivery nor a pulpit-thumping evangelistic sermon. It is, as the title suggests, a country church Sunday school lesson but, whether you are religious or not, the principles presented are universal, the topics germaine to everyday life, and the goodness that comes through genuine. I don't see how anyone could listen to this set and not feel better at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and helpful.......2007-05-02

The president has been teaching Sunday School since his Naval Academy days and his grasp and scope of the subject matter discussed is impressive. He invites questions and participation from the audience (congregation/class?) and the sessions are spirited and informative. His talent for taking current secular issues and relating them to specific areas of the scriptures is invaluable with surprising conclusions in some cases. Not afraid of tough problems or questions he plows through each lesson with charm, focus and an easy charisma.

As a citizen of Venezuela I witness firsthand a cold hearted Jimmy Carter taking sides with dictator Hugo Chavez. Jimmy Carter is a cancer.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Reeks of Partisan Hackery.......2007-05-22

Stephen Hayward's newest book makes a mockery of honest scholarship.

Hayward's discussion of Carter's foreign policy is full of cherry-picked facts and the analysis is highly misleading. Hayward virulently criticizes Carter for his actions in South America in ways which are (mostly) factual, but he does not mention that all subsequent presidents have done far worse things in the area. Reagan's support for the Nicaraguan contras alone resulted in more brutality and devastation than anything Carter tried. I do not mean to make apologies for Carter, some of his actions were inexcusable; nevertheless Carter was (relatively speaking) the biggest foreign policy dove in late 20th century.
Hayward's discussion of Carter's domestic policy is also lacking in substance and analysis. If you want factual information about Carter's brief campaign to legalize marijuana (and the fallout that ensued) see Mike Gray's excellent work, Drug Crazy : How We Got into This Mess and How We Can Get Out.

It is disappointing to see such poor material come from an intelligent man such as Hayward.
He has let his hatred for Jimmy Carter compromise his ability to produce high-quality work.

5 out of 5 stars "Smug pious arrogance" .......2007-05-17

Hayward gives a detailed account of Carter's failures as President, and perhaps even more tellingly, as ex-President.
One must always be wary of preachers of morality, and Carter's 'smug pious arrogance' is especially irritating when one considers the large donations he has pocketed from the Saudis while peddling and supporting their ideas on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Carter has attacked American policy and Presidents with indiscretion and unfairness.
This is a thoroughly researched and largely convincing work.

4 out of 5 stars The Truth We Knew In Print.......2007-05-13

Having been directly affected by Mr. Jimmy Carter as President I think that Steven Hayward has done a great job of letting this country know what to expect when the protege's of Mr. Carter next sit in the White House and have control of Congress.

I serve (quite naively) in Mr. Carter's Army (1976-1980) and saw his disdain for the military in action. When provoked in Korea only 17 of our 55 tanks could move because we had no parts. We froze in the cold temperatures of March because our Commander declared it was spring so the heating oil was siphoned out of our heaters.

We can thank Mr. Carter for the rise of radical Islam with his lack of support for The Shah of Iran. And for those who think he was bad, Kohmeini killed more people in the first year of the Islamic Revolution than the Shah had in 25 years. The war on Terror? It started with Jimmy Carter.

When Saddam invaded Kuwait, Carter said the solution was for Israel to give up the West Bank and that would be it. When Kim Il Sun in North Korea wanted to move his nuclear development forward Carter, with the support of Al Gore and Clinton gave him light water for development in their aggrements. Carter said the PLO was like the United Way taking care of the people. Giving away the Panama Canal was Carter's way of apologizing to Panama, what did they need an apology for?

The only thing missing in this book is Carter's impact on the Federal Judiciary. His activist judges took God out of schools, turned criminals out to the streets, and changed our culture.

His Carter Center is funded largely by Arab money of questionable origins. His objective there is to try to carry on the policies that ruined his presidency. Why? Because Jimmy Carter wants to be America's Ghandi. Its all about Jimmy.... nothing more.

A good read for those who want to know why the Clintons and the next generation of Democrats are who they are, its Jimmy Carter.

    Book Description

    <p align="center">

<big>The second in a series of inspiring, original programs from one of the most important voices of our time</big>

Jimmy Carter's beloved bestsellers Living Faith, Sources of Strength and Our Endangered Values have established him as one of our nation's most trusted authorities on issues of faith and society. Today, the weekly Bible class he teaches at his home church in Plains, Georgia is attended by visitors from around the world, representing a wide range of faiths and denominations.

Measuring Our Success presents the five classes President Carter taught in March 2003 on the Book of Mark. Exploring the miracles and aspirations of Jesus's early ministry, President Carter highlights elements of Jesus's message that speak to us today, including his challenge to religious leaders who "abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition" (Mark 7:8), and his revolutionary and inspiring vision of a loving God who doesn't measure our success by mortal or material standards.

Recorded at the time of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, these classes open with President Carter's comments on the eve and outset of the Iraq war, imbuing them with significant and lasting historical interest, and offering a dramatic and moving demonstration of the struggle to reconcile spiritual ideals with the challenges and conflicts of contemporary life.

When Jimmy Carter left the White House in 1981, he and his wife, Rosalynn, had to face the same questions many elder Americans encounter when retirement approaches: "How could we accommodate the unpleasant circumstances that had been forced on us? What were our assets and abilities? What were the dependable factors in a good life, and how could we recognize and develop them? Was it at all possible for us to be as satisfied in the future as we had been during some of our most interesting, adventurous, and successful times? Did we have anything much to offer in the years ahead?" In the years since, both Carters have become internationally recognized for their work as authors, teachers, and humanitarians, but as Carter amiably insists in The Virtues of Aging, you don't need to be a former president (or first lady) to make a difference in your life and the lives of others. He urges older Americans to take charge of their lives--by staying active, whether it's through volunteerism or indulgence in personal recreation; by relying on oneself as much as possible; by getting involved with others; and by putting one's affairs in order with an honest self-awareness of the inevitability that even the richest, most rewarding life comes to a close. Like all the books in the Library of Contemporary Thought series, this is a fairly short tome, but it lives up to the best in the series--such as Pete Hamill's News Is a Verb or Seymour Hersh's Against All Enemies--by presenting readers with something to ponder on just about every page.

    Book Description

"We are not alone in our worry about both the physical aspect of aging and the prejudice that exists toward the elderly, which is similar to racism or sexism. What makes it different is that the prejudice also exists among those of us who are either within this group or rapidly approaching it. When I have mentioned the title of this book to a few people, most of them responded, 'Virtues? What could possibly be good about growing old?' The most obvious answer, of course, is to consider the alternative to aging. But there are plenty of other good answers--many based on our personal experiences and observations. "

5 out of 5 stars How to enjoy being an old kokker .......2006-04-04

Simple, plain, clear good advice enlived by personal example and story. This is a good book about aging wisely, retaining one's powers as best as one can through the senior years. Former President Carter involuntarily forced to retire at fifty- six faced a double - crisis , identity and financial. He almost lost the family land and farm, but was saved when his peanut holdings were bought by a large consortium. He and his wife Rosalyn became active in new ways, as university teachers, writers, volunteer builders of one home for a needy person each year.
The Carter recipe for enjoying old age involves remaining active, continuing to interact with others, exercising, avoiding the well- known evils of cigarettes and excess drinking.
Carter recognizes that not everyone has the prerogatives of a former President but he maintains that most of us have the resources to go on enjoying life in old age.
It seems to me Carter is a lot wiser in this work than he is in many of his political writings.
This is a good book and has valuable tips which should help towards graceful aging.

THE VIRTUES OF AGING by Jimmy Carter
    February 25, 2006

    Amazon Rating: ****

In THE VIRTUES OF AGING, President Jimmy Carter writes about what a senior citizen can do to feel fulfilled and productive in ones last stage of life. As usual, he is quite candid as he writes about his own life, his marriage to Rosalyn, and recounts stories about his family and friends. I always enjoy reading Carter's non-fiction, as he always has some interesting anecdotes, as well as some wisdom-filled stories that he passes on to his readers. Carter never preaches, and I for one appreciate it. In fact, in this particular book he admits (at the end) that he tried to refrain from quoting much from the bible, as he felt it would detract from the topic. But since the church is a big part of his life, he did talk about his own participation with his church and did quote a few times in appropriate places as he discussed issues on aging.

I have to admit I'm rather biased because I have always admired the work Jimmy Carter has done since his presidency. Knowing about the good works he's done in the past few decades, I do not find it difficult at all to see that he's also left his mark in his writings. He's shared with the world what he has learned through his own past experiences as a son, a father, and grandfather, as well as Governor and President of the United States. I'm slowly collecting all of his books and so far have enjoyed what I have read. THE VIRTUES OF AGING was not as structured as some of his other books have been, but I don't think it was meant to be. It is a collection of thoughts and ramblings of aging gracefully, from his point of view.

1 out of 5 stars Perhaps he's aged too long.......2005-12-11

Jimmy Carter used to be my favorite ex-president. Now, it seems he has aged beyond the point at which he can reason clearly. He goes on Larry King to criticize a former colleague (Zell Miller) for standing in support of the President, AND writes a book, for which he will probably make millions of dollars, to do more of the same. He is using his roles as elder statesman (well-deserved) and Nobel Laureate (well-deserved) to undermine our country; but seems to have forgotten that he was impotent while our hostages were held in Iran for 444 days. You know the saying: "them what can't do, teach". If one of the virtues of aging is exploitation of public opinion for your own advantage (or that of your party), Jimmy Carter is VERY virtuous.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!!.......2004-05-13

I'm in my mid-40's and found this book a facinating
look at older age. Carter busts the old stereotypes
about sitting in the rocking chair during retirement age and mentions numerous examples of friends and associates in the 70's and 80's who are living enormously productive lives. This book
gives me hope for the future. Even though my last 45 years were probably a little easier than my next 45 will, I find solace in the many examples of warm relationships maintained, hobbies developed and new challenges in later life. A whole-hearted endorsement for this book.

Carter is my favorite former US President.

The book also gave me a great curiousity to look at more information on the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity.

4 out of 5 stars Growing old gracefully.......2003-03-31

"The Virtues of Aging," by former United States President Jimmy Carter, is a down-to-earth nonfiction book about growing old gracefully. Carter mixes interesting statistics with autobiographical information and practical advice.

Carter discusses his work and experiences with a number of organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity. He also discusses the lives of people who made extraordinary accomplishments in their senior years. Carter doesn't shy away from sensitive topics, such as senior sexuality or preparing for one's own death.

One admirable characteristic of Carter's writing is that while it is informed by his own Christian faith, he is also respectful of other belief traditions. Overall, he writes like an unpretentious friend who is sharing his life experience and perspective. Throughout the book, his wife Rosalynn is a constant presence; you get a real sense of the solidity of that relationship.

    Book Description

For decades, President Jimmy Carter has been an avid student and teacher of the Bible.  In recent years, the adult Sunday school classes he leads at his hometown Baptist church have become famous the world over.  As The New York Times put it, "These weekly sessions...are remarkable for the ability of regular folks to walk in, grab a seat and exchange views with the 39th President of the United States.  But they are also remarkable for what Mr. Carter has to say."

Now, this most admired American has selected fifty-two of his favorite Bible meditations from these Sunday gatherings to share with anyone who is searching for new faith...or fuller understanding of a lifelong creed.  The result is this remarkable book, Sources of Strength: Meditations on Scripture for a Living Faith.

For Jimmy Carter, as for countless others, Holy Scripture has been a constant companion, a source of inspiration and strength in both good times and bad.  A lifetime of devoted Bible reading has taught him that the truths of Scripture have the power to enrich and transform our daily lives in unexpected ways.  As President Carter writes, "The Bible offers concrete guidance for overcoming our weaknesses and striving toward the transcendent life for which we were created."

Sources of Strength is Jimmy Carter's invitation to you to share in the spiritual bounty of Scripture and joyous, more fulfilling life that a living faith makes possible.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book to Read Over Time.......2005-11-29

Thoughtfully written, this is one of those books to keep on the night stand and read one chapter a night and meditate upon the lesson set forth in the chapter. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Wise words from a great Christian man.......2004-12-29

This is a great devotional that draws on a wide range of scripture and also on President Carter's long, interesting, diverse, and meaningful life. Not only is Carter a good exegete of scripture, but his genuine faith comes through in every page. He writes in a very personal style that makes you feel like you're studying the scriptures with a favorite uncle...who happened to be the leader of the free world some years back.

The book is divided into 52 short sermonettes, I suppose so you can read one a week for a year (though you will almost certainly want to read it faster than that). These sections are further subdivided into 9 sections: The Word Became Flesh, His Healing Touch, Who is my Neighbor?, What We Believe, Christians in the World, To Know and Worship, God's Riches at Christ's Expense, When the Road is Rough, and God's Call. The messages are broad enough that you can likely find a word of hope or encouragement or challenge somewhere in here, depending on what it is that you need to hear.

The meditations are intellectually stimulating, yet simple enough that I have used some of them as reading for my youth group.

In his life, Jimmy Carter has shown what is means to live out your faith. In this book, he reflects on what that can look like for us.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, sensational, clear and to the point.......2004-08-16

This is the very first book I read of Carter. I never expected that an ex-president, supposed to be pragmatic and rational, can have written such a beautiful, sensational, clear and to the point spiritual book. Not a few messages, but fifty-two meaningful and insightful ones in this 241 page book. The format is traditional, with three to four pages of elaboration on a particular biblical verse. Nevertheless, the impact is great and you really feel your faith and spiritual strength being enhanced through reading it, of course with intermittent prayers in between for optimal effect. I dont want to comment it as a tool book, but it does serves its purpose really well.

In short, a great read not to be missed! It's the best and the least difficult spiritual book I had read in months, after the intense round of five to six Philip Yancey books I read about half a year before, which I still deem them the very best amongst all christian books.

p.s. Below please find two good passages for your reference:-

Pg 74: The context for Jesus's stories about the Samaritans, ...For Samaritan, substitute black, Muslim, AIDS, Haitian - or perhaps roll them all into one! ... His acknowledging the gratitude of the healed leper and using a Samaritan's actions as epitomizing the Golden Rule are powerful lessons against prejudice.

Pg 112: We argue incessantly about separation of church and state, the priesthood of believers, ordination of women, prayer in schools, gay rights, predestination ... and any number of other "crucial" issues. Perhaps worse than the Corinthians, we forget the solid, unquestionable, unifying foundation of our faith in in the gentle Jesus, full of grace and truth. As Cecil Sherman has said, "Too many churches are majoring in the minors."

5 out of 5 stars One of my most prized books.......2004-07-07

I cannot express in words how important this book is to me. I started reading it during a very difficult time in my life and it really helped me. Many people look for spiritual guidance, but let's face it, the bible can be a difficult read. Jimmy Carter takes passages from the bible and explains what he thinks they mean. However, Carter does it in a very loving and objective way. Mr. Carter speaks of the compassionate and forgiving Christ. There is no finger pointing and moralizing here. Mr. Carter simply tries to relay what God's message is and how me might live it. Although I am not a Baptist like Jimmy Carter, I really felt in tune with what he had to say. If the bible by itself has not helped you to understand God's greater message, maybe this book will.

5 out of 5 stars I Highly Reccomend Sources of Strength.......2002-04-25

I gained a respect for Jimmy Carter that until now was only a fair assessment of the man. I know he wrote this with the intention of being a once a week reading, but I have just about finished it in just under two weeks with intentions to reread it many many more times. His style of writing has left me with the desire to read many more of his works. One cannot help but to find ones faith taken to a higher level after reading his Bible Teachings.

"On Their Own is a must-read account...for all Americans who care about children."(President Jimmy Carter)

On Their Own tells the compelling stories of ten young people whose lives are full of promise, but who face economic and social barriers stemming from the disruptions of foster care. This book calls for action to provide youth in foster care the same opportunities on the road to adulthood that most of our youth take for granted--access to higher education, vocational training, medical care, housing, and relationships within their communities. On Their Own is meant to serve as a clarion call not only to policymakers, but to all Americans who care about the future of our young people.

"Together, Shirk and Stangler have written a searing book about one aspect of the foster-care mess--the older teenagers who age out of the system meant to protect their welfare." (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

5 out of 5 stars Good for novices to foster care system.......2005-10-19

The interworkings of social services and esp. that of foster care are complex and take much to understand. On Their Own is written at a basic level so the general public can understand what is going on. I have been a mentor and advocate for foster children for a year now and found the book helpful and inspiring. The back part of the book has detailed information on what can be done to help this problem. Some of the kids I mentor will soon be turning 18 and this has allowed me some insight on what to do.

The book is amazing for someone who doesn't understand the foster care system. Even though I work with foster kids and understand some of the interworkings, it allowed me better understanding. I had my mom read the book as well. The forward by Jimmy Carter is amazing as well. Good read if you enjoy learning about social issues.

I hope that you take time out to read this book. It focuses on the lives of youth who are in foster care and the challenges that we face when we emancipate from the foster care system. This book is great for people who work in the social services field, who work directly with foster youth, as well as the foster youth themselves. I am in it as well, please read my story... pg. 109

5 out of 5 stars The Saddest Story.......2005-04-27

What happens when Social Services fail you? And even though you've turned eighteen, or so it says on your birth certificate, you're still not ready for adulthood? Children in foster care face this dilemma daily, for as soon as they're 18, they're dumped from wherever it is that was paying for them to stay. The Williams brothers, three small boys, grew up tough, and in their different ways, Jermaine, Lamar and Jeffrey all tried to cope with a foster system that alternately coddled them and abused them. I was moved to tears by reading the account of Jermaine's last days on earth, simply written by ace reporter Martha Shirk. Happily, the other members of Jermaine's family are living still. Then there's Giselle, a promising young girl who unfortunately becomes prey to anorexia. All too soon, adulthood is upon her, while she's still struggling with a common problem of teenage girls. Liberals worry about these issues, while those of a more conservative bent argue that 18 is certainly old enough to expect a young man or woman to get out on his own and stop depending on charity or handouts. But Shirk and her co-author Stabgler admit there are no easy answers.

Anyone can read this book and identify with the ideas behind it, for in one way or another we are all affected by the problems of aging and by being forced by old Father Time into a realm we are really not prepared for. For these young people, it was turning 18. For some of us, it might be turning thirty. And for baby boomers, it will be the call of the retirement trumpet when, once so active, people born in the 1940s and 1950s will be put on the shelf in today's changing world, without sufficient preparation on how to live in that place of old age. Jimmy Carter contirbutes an elegant foreword that shows he has really thought about the problems of youth. That's the saddest story of all.

This poet, best-selling author, peace activist, and prominent voice for the Muscular Dystrophy Association fervently believed in and promoted world peace not just as a concept, but as a reality.

Mattie was working on this manuscript with Jimmy Carter when he died in June 2004. His mother, Jeni, who edited the material and wrote a preface for the book is publishing it at her son's request. Just Peace explores Mattie's concept of the world and all people as a unique mosaic of gifts. War and injustice shatter the mosaic, which can only be made whole again by planning and actively pursuing peace. The young visionary's essays, poetry, and photographs appear throughout the book. Jimmy Carter has written a special foreword and forthword for the book.

Just as important to the book and enlightening to the reader are Mattie's many correspondences. Central to these are his personal e-mails to and from former president Jimmy Carter, Mattie's peace "hero" and role model. The Nobel Peace Prize winner met Mattie, considered him an angel, messenger, and hero in his own right, and was genuinely affected by Mattie's passion and drive. Just Peace is an intimate portrait of a president, a young man of hope, and peace itself.

A portion of the proceeds from Just Peace will be donated to the MDA Mattie Fund designated for medical research to help find treatments and cures for childhood neuromuscular diseases.</p>

5 out of 5 stars A Profound and Inspirational Book.......2007-04-05

Mattie J. T. Stepanek's book is one of the most profound and inspirational books I have ever read. I don't know if any of you had the privilege of encountering young Mattie on his numerous television appearances on Oprah, Good Morning America, Larry King, or the Jerry Lewis M.D. telethon, but if you did, or did not, I invite you to read this book by this best-selling young poet, peacemaker and philosopher. Mattie J.T. Stepanek died in June, 2004, weeks before his 14th birthday. I have all his previous poetry books, but this book goes far beyond his poetry, with brilliant essays, and email correspondence with his hero, President Jimmy Carter. His essays are incredible, filled with wisdom and insights that hardly seem possible coming from such a young mind.

Mattie wrote these words: "I believe that I am here to reach out and touch the world gently with my thoughts and my experiences, and with my observations and my reactions, to help people more fully appreciate and respect all aspects of life. I believe that I am here, even if only for a few handful of years, to help people consider the important matter of future, during our lifetime, and for eternity."

His essays are profound and I find I cannot even put into words the value of his work, except to say it has to be shared. You may think, oh, this is a kid, what can he know. Trust me, his writing is beautiful, his philosophy profound, insightful, and filled with a wisdom far, far, beyond his age. His legacy is a gift for humanity, and those of us who did encounter Mattie will never forget this special angel, a messenger of peace, and those who now read his book, will also remember

Mattie J. T. Stepanek lived and died a child, but he had the spirit and wisdom of an old soul. In his short thirteen years, he became a poet, best-selling author, and peace activist, and his words touched millions of our hearts. Before his death in June 2004, his six volumes of "Heartsongs" poetry have sold more than a million copies. It is my hope that "Just Peace, A Message of Hope," will also reach millions of hearts and minds throughout the world.

I have bought a number of copies of "Just Peace: A Message of Hope" as gifts for my family and friends.

    5 out of 5 stars Just Inspirational.......2006-11-17

Never have I and never will I ever be so inspired by anyone in the same way I have been inspired by Mattie J. T. Stepanek. In reading this book, one has to believe in love, happiness and peace. This child and his mother have been through so much heartache and pain. It's just amazing to me how two people with so much pain can inspire the world. They truly are a gift from God. If you haven't read this book, or any of Mattie's other books, then you are really missing out!

5 out of 5 stars STILL OUR GREATEST LIVING PRESIDENT AND THE BOY WHO ADMIRED HIM.......2006-10-23

Mattie was prophetic in so many ways, including in identifying our most ethical and honest and faith-based and peaceful and productive President.

America lost when we lost the Second Carter Inaugural Address.

Will we never again see a President of the USA win the Nobel Peace Prize?

    5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book!.......2006-07-04

When I first heard about Mattie, it was about five years ago and I guess I didn't really pay too much attention. But I had heard and read enough of his poetry that by the time he passed away my heart was broken. I wished I had payed more attention to what he was doing while he was alive. This book really helped me to fill in the gaps. It is full of his poetry and essays, as well as a history of his life as seen through his email correspondance with Jimmy Carter. I was in tears every time I picked up this book. So I have no problem in giving it the highest rating possable.

5 out of 5 stars HONEST AND LIFE-CHANGING.......2006-06-14

This book is inspired by a boy who endured more pain than is almost conceivable and yet, Mattie Stepanek rises like the Phoenix from the ashes of his own suffering to genuinely challenge and gently encourage his readers towards the goals of "Thinking gently, speaking gently, and Living gently."

Just Peace, published almost 2 years after Mattie's passing, is co-authored by former US President, Jimmy Carter. They were close friends and comrads-in-arms in the field of Diplomacy and Peace.

Just Peace is a wonderful account of a former US President and his wife, who became fast and close friends to a boy who was in the slow process of dying since his birth. Unlike Mattie's books of poetry, this book is mostly prose, photos, and email posts from Mattie to Pres. Carter and vice, veersa. Jimmy Carter was Mattie's no. 1 Peace-maker Hero. Equally, Pres. Carter said that Mattie was the greatest person, whom he had ever personally met in his entire life.

Read this book and discover WHY. Jimmy Carter's words are not empty, and the depth and insight of Mattie Stepanek is still changing lives, even as I write this review. Mattie forever changed me to be a gentler, more-caring, and focused person.
For all readers with hearts desirous for giving, ministering, and loving, EVER so gently, and lovingly, this is your book!
Mattie's poems speak the same message and will warm your hearts and may even cause you to cry wistful tears, for Mattie, with good cause, is justifiably missed! He's my hero too.

    4 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings..........2003-10-18

For those who are interested in MidEast affairs (as myself) this covers a fascinating topic and is written in a fluid style, which adds up to a truly gripping read.

The only reason for which I am not awarding this book 5 stars (and were it possible 6 or 7 stars) is the fact that many of the claims are indeed extreme...

Too much of the book simply adds up to bill this as complete fiction. Several other books (amongst which "The Samson Option", written by a renown journalist) have been based on Ben-Menashe's knowledge. Investigations have sprung up in the US and in Australia. Of course, these haven't lead far, but this is a serious case of the poeple in power charged with investigating the people in power - so what would you really expect?

Whilst I was reading this book I kept my copy of "Israels Secret Wars" at hand to verify events, facts and dates, and together with a bit of searching around the net, the essence of it all seems to add up.

Right from the start the author makes his embitterment with the "system" clear, so accusing him of having an axe to grind is pretty lame - add to that the fact that amongst his sworn enemies (at the end) was the media mogul R. Maxwell (who unleashed the full weight of his media empire to destroy his credibility) and you end up without much of a case...
    ****************************
TO SUM IT UP: You have to be deeply cynical, but alas perhaps realistic, to accept all that is stated in this book. In the end, however, I am one who believes that where there's smoke, there's got to be some fire as well, and this book discloses a hell of a lot of smoke!

1 out of 5 stars Better Spy Fiction Than Ian Fleming.......2002-12-13

After reading this book I didn't know how to react to much of it. Many of the claims are plausible, many are wildly implausible, and some of the information is just plain factually wrong. Sharon left the IDF in 1973, not 1970 as Menashe says. Shamir retired or "was retired from" the Mossad in 1965 not the "early 1970s." Ben-Menashe is the first person who claims that the IAF has B-52s--two squadrons no less--but he doesn't say where Israel hides these massive eight-engine bombers. He also claimed that the murder of an old American Jewish cripple by Abul Abbas' organization on the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro was an Israeli plot to discredit the PLO. Ben-Menashe doesn't really document any of his claims but asks us just to trust him. His first whopper is to claim that Shimon Peres had been paid millions by Lockheed while defense minister. Since all of Israel's American fighters were built by McDonnel Douglas or General Dynamics this seems highly unlikely. Israel does use the Lockheed C-130, but the Lockheed scandal in Europe at the same time was to get the Belgians, Dutch, and Italians to purchase F-104 Starfighter interceptors. This is typical of Ben-Menashe--he seems to take bits of news and spin it into a plot like a Hollywood screenwriter.

    4 out of 5 stars Ari Ben-Manashe's experience.......2002-05-01

An excellent well documented book by a high level Israeli agent. I have to give Sheridan Square Press's publishers Ellen Ray & Bill the Credit for the content as the author did the same. Most of us out of the publishing, or, media business are not skilled writers. Sheridian Square Press out of N.Y., N.Y. did the same service for the deceased Jim Garrison in his book "On the Trails of Assassins" documenting events leading up to the events of the Kennedy asassination that Oliver Stone made a movie of.

5 out of 5 stars Exceeds five stars!.......2002-04-23

This was a fantastic read. If you really want to know about the workings of world intelligence agencies from the inside, how they manipulate other countries, people, events then you must read this book. Better than a James Bond novel!
As you read further and further into the book you become more and more entangled in the world of espionage and paranoia. Gripping to the end.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I Ever Read.......2000-04-24

If your really are interested in what goes on in the world and how it gets accomplished; this is the closest I've ever been to the workings of what it's like to be a SPOOK. I give it 6 stars.
