    "Africa for the Africans" was the name given in Africa to the extraordinary black social protest movement led by Jamaican Marcus Mosiah Garvey (1887-1940). Volumes I-VII of the Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers chronicled the Garvey movement that flourished in the United States during the 1920s. Now, the long-awaited African volumes of this edition (Volumes VIII and IX and a forthcoming Volume X) demonstrate clearly the central role Africans played in the development of the Garvey phenomenon.
    The African volumes provide the first authoritative account of how Africans transformed Garveyism from an external stimulus into an African social movement. They also represent the most extensive collection of documents ever gathered on the early African nationalism of the inter-war period. Here is a detailed chronicle of the spread of Garvey's call for African redemption throughout Africa and the repressive colonial responses it engendered. Volume VIII begins in 1917 with the little-known story of the Pan-African commercial schemes that preceded Garveyism and charts the early African reactions to the UNIA. Volume IX continues the story, documenting the establishment of UNIA chapters throughout Africa and presenting new evidence linking Garveyism and nascent Namibian nationalism.

      In compiling this book, Mrs. Garvey has succeeded in revealing the true mindset of one of the greatest Black leaders of the 20th century. By presenting Marcus Garvey's actual letters, speeches and writings, we are granted the privilege of reading HIS OWN WORDS, instead of yet another author's interpretation. Additionally, I was very pleased that the book explained the actions of those who conspired to thwart Garvey's efforts (many of whom he actually mentions by name) and the conditions that effectuated his eventual deportation. I found this writing especially useful in understanding Garvey's true feelings regarding the N.A.A.C.P. and W.E.B. DuBois, as well as his views on racism, Pan-Africanism, and how peoples of all races can co-exist in peace. An absolute MUST READ for any student of the Great Marcus Garvey, and his lifelong effort to improve the conditions of Black people around the world!

      This is truly a classic of Black literature. The first half of the book contains very constructive advice on living and self-determination regardless of color. The second half gets into his organization the UNIA with some actual documents. The "Declaration of the Rights of the Negro" (1920) is the blueprint for many of the anti-colonial movements to come. My only problem with the book is the occasionally divisive comments about light-skinned Blacks in his discussion of the destruction of his movement. Other than that, it's great reading.

      3 out of 5 stars Rastafari as a Marxist/Political Movement.......2000-07-30

      This book is as much about Marxist theory as it is about Rastafarianism, which isn't necessarily a bad thing unless you're not as interested in the former as in the latter. Rodney's objective is to couch the origins of the Rastafarian movement in that of proletariat class struggle. However, he provides little evidence to demonstrate a definitive link between the two. Rodney convincingly shows that Rasta developed as a means for the descendants of African slaves to positively identify with Africa and her people, as opposed to the white king of England. Insofar as this movement developed among blacks who constituted the mass of Jamaica's populace and who were working-farming poor - than Rasta may be considered a proletarian movement. However, Rodney provides no evidence that the early Rasta leaders consciously understood their struggle as a "class struggle" as that phrase is understood in the Marxist lexicon. The evidence suggests only that they sought to empower the mass of "sufferers" by seeking to positively identify with Africa and the African King - Haile Selassie I. The discussion of Rastafarianism in a political, social, economic and cultural context is so pervasive as to make one forget that practitioners consider Rastafari a religion. Indeed, Rodney provides no information on the central tenants, philosophy or rites of Rastafari as a religion. Rodney seeks to dismiss those Rasta who believe in the divinity of Selassie as misguided victims of Coptic propaganda. This conclusion reinforces Rodney's objective to posit Rastafari as a viable political movement for change and Rodney provides enough evidence to make this conclusion credible. Moreover, showing the political aspects of Rastafari allows those who may not necessarily believe in the divinity of Selassie to become involved in the movement. Despite the Marxist overtones and lack of religious information, the book still deserves a good rating. Independent of the Marxist analysis the book provides great factual and historical information about the resistance of Africans and their descendents against slavery, colonialism and neocolonialism in the Caribbean and credibly depicts Rasta as a form of resistance. Indeed, if you aren't seeking a better understanding of Rastafari as a religion than this book is well worth the money. In this vein of resistance Marcus Garvey is prominently featured. The book contains an excellent chapter on the role of reggae music in spreading the Rasta's culture of resistance and ends with a thought-provoking discussion of repatriation, ultimately concluding that Africans and their descendants must struggle to change their conditions wherever they find themselves.

      I had the privilege of "awakening" under the masterful stewardship of Dr. Horace Campbell. He is no longer teaching in Tanzania, but spent many years cultivating and producing great thinkers in Zimbabwe, where I met him. Since then, he has continued his tenureship stateside returning to Syracuse University in 1996. Exposing yourself to an essay, article or book by Dr. Campbell will provide interesting and compelling realizations of African and Caribbean political histories.

      History teaches a lot about the Black struggles here in the United States, but you hardly find any books about slavery and Black struggles in the Carribean and South America. Rasta and Resistance talks about the beginnings of the slave trade, slavery in Brazil, the Haitian Revolution and Toussaint L'Ouverture, Walter Rodney, Rastafarianism, ska and reggae music, and Black struggles in Great Britain. A great book for those wanting to learn more about the lost chapters of slavery and Black struggles.

      4 out of 5 stars Historically Fascinating Visions in Need of Getting Adjusted to the New Times.......2007-03-10

      The title should have made clear that the selected speeches and writings of Marcus Garvey cover his years in the US only, from 1917-25. It is very rewarding, from a historical point of view, to read authentic words of that most important public figure, so much has been said, written, and filmed about. Especially, since Garvey remains very controversial and a lot has been misinterpreted to this day.

      Maybe as a result of the limited time frame covered, some speeches and writings are lacking, which Garvey is most famous for. Among these are more direct references of Ethiopia and her coming King of kings; that Jesus was black-skinned; Garvey's stand on contemporary emerging africanist prophets in the Caribbean and the US. Considering that the introduction avers that Garvey in some twisted way made positive remarks towards Mussolini and Hitler, the corresponding proof of that is most definitely missing in this book, I might say. All these omissions are responsible for the subtraction of a star in my rating.

      The still high rating has to be seen in providing authentic texts by Garvey himself, not necessarily that I share all the views of Garvey. This is not a book BY Garvey, but a compilation of his speeches/articles, made available to the public. To make that clear: I venerate Marcus Garvey for that what he pushed forward, for challenging the racist system, for following up his visions, for being a human of action, for organising incredible international work and for his martyrdom of the contemporary racist judicial system of the US.

      Still, he is a product of his times and as RastafarI I am very much aware that both, lacking knowledge and the system's conditioning of all sorts of separation cannot be overcome on a single day or in fact, in a single generation. It is important to enter that path at all. Therefore, some of Garvey's visions and speeches are very much up to date, others are hilariously outdated. In fact, very racist. I am not talking about his vision of "black supremacy", because that is, what is usually said about him (and wrongly interpreted). I am talking about his belief in races, down to the point of actively and sort of forcibly thinking about preventing a "mixing of races", in fact by that agreeing with the KKK, with which he held a meeting (and elaborates on in this book). His vision of very literal repatriation of all the black-skinned to Africa has since been re-interpreted to a metaphorical return of the mind. His fighting for the use of that certain N-word instead of "Coloreds" is most certainly not top of the political correctness as of today, but in a way mirrors interestingly today's controversy of "Black" v "African American". Also, the use of extremely derogatory racist vocabulary hurled at his direct black civil rights rivals is most certainly unacceptable in today's world. In fact, Garvey makes it clear that he thinks of those rivals, such as W.E.B. DuBois as worse enemies than all the white supremacists imaginable. Which makes for a fascinating reading of that human condition to usually fight that the most, which is most close. In that, even though outdated by words, this makes for a thought provoking reading, representative of universal general mechanisms, as every minority harbors the challenging rebels and the system integrationists, fighting each other to the bones, much more than the common downpressor.

        Black Moses was first published nearly 50 years ago. It was based on a masters thesis and for years was the only book available on Marcus Garvey. Since the 1970s several new books on Garvey have appeared, most notably Race First by Tony Martin. These more recent books are much better researched and incorporate a lot of new sources that Cronon was unaware of or did not have access to. These include Garvey's newspaper, the Negro World and various governmenrt records in the US National Archives. It simply is no longer possible to get a really accurate view of Marcus Garvey from Cronon's now woefully out of date work. It served its purpose but should now give way to better books.

        Knowing only of the name "Marcus Garvey," I set about reading this book to get a better understanding of Garvey's beliefs and perceptions on race relations in the 1920's and 1930's. This book fit the billing, with an honest account of the victories, defeats, embarassments, and lasting effects of Marcus Garvey's legacy. Unforunately, Marcus Garvey was never spoken of in my high school or college history courses. This book provides a great starting point for understanding the conditions in 1920's America, which allowed Marcus Garvey to gather such a large and faithful following.

For almost a quarter of a century he had led the Universal Negro Improvement Association, at its peak the largest international mass movement in the history of African peoples.           This is a great book. The message that Marcus Garvey brought is clearly conveyed in this nice little book. The focus seems to be the upliftment and education of African Americans, but the philosophy of his teaching is essential for anyone searching for truth. the book is divided into 22 short chapters. All of them are great, but my favorites are Education and Christ.
          This is essential reading for anyone interested in African Philosophy or self liberation and education.

          In this book, Marcus Garvey reveals the secrets of discipline, kindness, and committment that made him the most influential leader of African Descent during the 20th century. This book is a testament to the man's generosity of spirit; personally, following the advice given in this book has made me a better man. I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who aspires to achieve extraordinary accomplishment.
